Ask any kid from the 80s who the greatest athlete in the world is, and they’ll say Bo Jackson. Bo was a cultural megastar, the only person to be selected as both an MLB and NFL all-star. Mythical stories of his athletic ability created a larger-than-life persona of Bo Jackson. But just how good was he actually?

The thing that I admired the most about Bo is how classy he was through it all. He was beyond a doubt the best all-around athlete prior to the hip injury, but he was never cocky about it. He just played the game and let his performance on the field speak for itself. Just glad I'm the same age as him and got the opportunity to see him play both at Auburn and in the pros.

What I love about his story is he wanted to play at Alabama. He said that he coach he meant with was like “we don’t play freshman but you can earn a spot eventually, and why would you choose Auburn over us, they haven’t beaten us in a decade and they won’t for another decade.”
So Bo went to Auburn, played as a freshman, and beat Alabama first year there.
    Now that’s boss.

But if he was lucky to play long enough, he could be one of the Top5 RBs in the league history. Not if the GOAT. But I know about Berry😁 for me he was best in not the best team. Same as Megatron.

Bo Jackson is my hero. I broke my hip at 21, avascular femoral head necrosis, the head of my femor lost blood supply and it slowly died, extremely painful. At 25 years old I have a total hip replacement. I rehabbed my hip with yoga and within a year was sitting lotus and back to my old self. I got my motivation and belief in my bodies potential because of Bo Jackson showing what was possible. I would have given up if not for the inspiration I derived from Mr Jackson. I owe you alot Mr Jackson. Thank you for being such an amazing role model.

    • @Wowzersdude-k5c

He barely even practiced at Auburn. Coach Dye talked about how hard it was to balance him because other teammates saw how he got special treatment. He would just show up for game time and run for 200+. (He had a game where he ran for 200 in the 1st quarter). He also did not like to lift weights (at least in college), so pretty much the sculpted physique you see was all natural, yet some people have a hard time believing he wasn't on roids. I can understand why they say that, but he wasn't on roids, hell he barely weight trained. This fact is easy to see in his photos and videos - his physique while sculpted was gracile. He wasn't all bloated and "swole" like people today.
He once said baseball was his first love and the NFL was just a "hobby." So we have a guy who was one of the best NFL RB's of all time calling it a hobby. He only played half the NFL season most years and didn't go through their off-season drills. He just basically showed up and played.

What is with the Hershell Walker clips?

Right? This guy also doesn't know that Walker won the Heisman as a junior so it was no longer an unwritten rule.

If Bo never had the hip injury, he would be the all-time leading rusher in NFL history.

2:28 This is Herschel Walker. The only man comparable to Bo Jackson, Unbelievably, they are roughly in the same era.

Bo Jackson in Tecmo Bowl was unstoppable. No other RB in the game we like him.

You used Herschel Walker in some of this footage. Lol

Yes. It's sometimes hard to tell them apart with that #34 and how beastly both were on the field. Herschel deserves his own video too.

@@Wowzersdude-k5c virtually the same size and speed. Walker had an unusual gait that was a bit easier to spot. I saw them play against one another when Bo was a freshman at Auburn and Herschel was a junior at UGA. I saw Herschel run the last leg of a 4×100 relay while I stood next to Charles Barkley. Seriously. And i also ran a 100 yd dash, with other 10 -14 year olds, against Bo Jackson, his junior year when he was at his peak. We had 30 yd head starts, and he still smoked us. I went to virtually all his Auburn games. 80's were happening.

@@majorkade I am a huge AU fan myself. So I am familiar with Bo and Herschel's exploits. You're older than me, I was a kid in the 80's.
If you look at Bo and Herschel's officially recorded (electronic) times in college, Herschel was slightly faster in the 100 meter (10.23 to Bo's 10.39). But I have a feeling Herschel trained harder for sprinting than Bo did - Herschel seemed to take it seriously and I am not sure Bo cared all that much. Both were clocked at 9.5 in the 100 yard.
I would bet money, though, that Bo was faster in the 40 yard dash. He seems to me, just based on eye test, to have had better acceleration.
Right now AU has a player on roster who is world class (Anthony Schwartz) and he has ran electronically timed 10.0's in the 100 meter. But Schwartz is tiny compared to Herschel and Bo. Anyway based on my eye test, Bo seemed to have better acceleration than him too.

@@Wowzersdude-k5c I was probably 12 when i raced Bo. Cheerleaders had middle of field lined off for him - during the A-Day (Spring) game. My dad and lots of family went to Auburn. I went to Samford. An older brother is one of Auburn's boosters now. I have heard of that receiver and his speed, but I rarely watch college football these days. Auburn had some amazing track athletes back in the day: Harvey Glance and Stanley Floyd. I think Floyd was the fastest man in the world one year.
