I'm a 65 year old Limey Pommie bar steward who's been listening to 'The Dan' for around 2 thirds of my life and still getting goosebumps on hearing their songs. Fagan and Becker, the best songwriters of all time. My life might soon be over but thank God I was born when I was.
The Dan plays the best sounds that I reveled in during my prime in the 70s. Now when I listen to them I get the chills and a few tears from sweet memories from way back when. There's a good chance that their songs will be repeating from the imprints made upon my mind when I pass! Thank God for my Steely Dan!
I have listened to all types of music in my 70 years of life....but no other music group has ever, in my opinion, created such a unique sound by blending blues, jazz and soft rock like these guys. The music and lyrics create a truly one of a kind sound I think is ageless. I consider Steel Dan's blended sound to be the best contemporary music ever created.
maybe the Bee Gees were another genius type musicians of same ilk albeit more with a slant to disco. But I definitely agree with you - maybe also aligned here are the Average White Band
Undoubtedly!!when I heard them the first time it was just instantaneous gold!! I had never heard anything like them before.. It was mysterious, intriguing and touch my very musical core at its deepest! A spot I didn’t even know existed in me!! Still listen to them after all these years.
Nice summer night in Wisconsin in 2023! Beautiful evening! Out deck sitting with a chocolate cherry cigar, a beer, and Steely Dan whilst on a short summer break as a teacher!
I know what you mean. We were so fortunate to have lived it. My first concert (other than symphony and MJQ) was Steely Dan at Memorial Auditorium in around '76 - '77 I think? Glory days.
I absolutely Love Steely Dan ❤❤❤!!! And this is My Anthem!!! Josie was a Bad Bitch!!! Steely Dan told stories in their music 🎶 🎵!!! Steely Dan is My All Time Favorite Group!!!!!
78 years old I still cry when I hear this music. My brother loved this guys and last hit we enjoyed before he passed away. It gives me chills,... not like the mess we hear today. Love those tones!! Rick, from , Fairmount -Philly
I hoping for a renascence in music. Sure there are some in the world out there who are talented and all but the scope is nothing like music from the pass. Real instruments, song writing etc. There are singers and songs people went to sleep on and now they are coming into full view.
Just when you thought Steely Dan couldn’t surprise you, they would. This song had such a great groove.A one musicianship.Smooth doesn’t even begin to describe this band.It doesn’t get any better.✌️
No one is making this kind of music anymore 😔 This is definitely what distinguishes today from yesteryear. This music is a gem that I will always return to, to fill my heart and soul, when I am wistful for the good old days; when people were more kind and helpful to their neighbours; when people spoke to eachother face to face; when people's gaze was forward facing rather than down at their dumb cell phones, contemplating their next idiotic selfie. At least we have our beautiful memories 💕😍
I was born 51 ,l play drums and still play gigs as often as possible,. I just love music, more so to this high standard ,. So much to do ,, so little time left, memories so sweet , long live rock and roll
One of the most interesting things about steely Dan is the fact that they actually revealed to ...my memory fails me on this one...they "used up" studio musicians like cannon fodder. That would imply Michael McDonald and likely Jeff porcaro as well.
Ever hear the story about of how SD started. Denny Dias, (who had a little group and were playing in his mom's basement, but getting nowhere fast) put an ad in the Village Voice looking for a keyboardist, and guitarist, and said "Asshole's need not apply."...Fagen and Becker showed up, and they jammed for a few hours with him. He followed by firing the rest of his band.
Indeed!! The compositions of Donald Fagan and Walter Becker speak for themselves!! No nonsense chord changes, with no nonsense chord progressions with generous usage of the dominant 7th sharp 9 chords even vocally-- sounds so contemporary--- thats WHY their music will never sound stale or dated. Yes, indeed--- a group and " sound" that will stand the test of time!!
I still blast Steely Dan while driving thru Bluetooth! Is anybody writing "real music" any more? It was and still is great! I even blast John Denver! I believe there's been a music "mental block" since way back when! Everyone is waiting for Josie to come home!
The "AJA" album was in my 8 track player on the drive from California to Michigan in '78. People say they spent too much time trying to get their music perfect. Whatever. Let those folks go listen to some of the crap that's been coming through their headphones for the past forty-to-fifty years.
Could not afford 8 track player, went to the library (UK) and taped it on a cassette and played in the car. We thought we were up on the times doing this. Did buy the Aja album eventually, as I could not stop playing the cassette and ruined it in the end.
The seventies should be certainly incredible years in USA. I wish I could live that time. Just discovered SD in 2022! I live now I wrong time and place. Get me back there in time please.
Since 72's Can't buy a Thrill, I've followed their music. Saw them once in Vegas, they were amazing! The excitement of a new CD coming was like the next 007 movies! How easy it was to entertain our little minds!
This video alone should just about clinch it.....easily one of the top 5 (bands, Duo's or whatever you wanna call Steely Dan) of all time, and this particular video is one of their best Live performances ever. I've seen them a few times, but this live cut of "Josie" is the best one I've ever heard from them. Incredible!
Real old school, layed back in the pocket Funk. The bass player and the drummer are really locked in. And the guitar player's licks are awesome. No one is trying to out play the other. And the vocals top it off. Real true 70's groove. The key board's top it off
This is one of those rare songs, that when you hear the opening chords, you KNOW what song it is! My hat is off to the group for putting out a well-recognized song!!!!
FANTASTIC! STILL CAN'T GET ENOUGH! When Josie comes home, so good She's the pride of the neighborhood She's the raw flame, the live wire She prays like a Roman with her eyes on fire 🔥
So many great session players on this and so many other of their songs. Chuck Rainey (bass) and Jim Keltner (drums) form the backbone of the rhythm section on this.

Missing my Wonderful Walter.
One of the intellectual bands. Words can't express how I miss the seventies.
I was born in the 70's. But totally agree with you. The best music ever made was in the 70's. Although the early 80s were also good.
Take care

How about 2023?
The 70´´s were great, all right. Lots of unforgettable concerts by world class bands and artists.

This album WAS 1977. Album of the year. The Dan, never fails.
I named my dog after this song 16 years ago and she's still the pride of the neighborhood! :)
My cousin Peg (yes, Peg) named her daughter Josie.
Now I want to rename my dog to Josie! Nice!

Please someone shoot me back into the seventies when life and the music of the Dan were so sweet...
THE BEST MUSICIANS AND BANDS WAS IN THE 70's .
Sorry Johan we can't shoot back into the 70s the last guy who thought he could accomplish that...I think was...U.S. Representative James Trafficant.
James Traficant was framed not to mention way ahead of his time God rest his Soul !
The sad thing is, none of my friends listened to them. I sure did, and snapped up every album I could.

SD is one of those bands where the older you get, the better they sound.

Yes... but missing Walter Becker.... 😔
If you like prog rock ... this album is timeless!
I wouldn't call it prog per se. but it certainly is crossover: jazz/blues/funk. This particular song is jazzy disco.
