As a kid I had what school officials called “pacing problems.” Just rocking back and forth and walking back n forth. I became an attorney. I also taught school myself. But I remember when I was at my worst as a kid, I had an astute teacher that gave me musical therapy and I was introduced to the symmetrically beautiful composition of Steely Dan as I “walked it off”. Like an old friend. Xoxo

As a child of the 70s I am transported back in time. Shopping at TG&Y, conleys, ben franklin Woolworths, pop in glass bottles, huffy bicycle les, 8 tracks, should I go on? Loved the 70s. Miss them everyday!!!
Music usually touches the mind of the current generation as it is a direct reflection of they time in which they live. To us it may be offensive, because it does not reflect our current state. I’m sure our folks felt awful about this music.
Wow, I know I'm getting old when most of these guys and girls are OLD or dead . At 59 I still believe I lived during the best time for music. And I thank God for that. The future of America looks bleak.
I wasn't even born when this song came out. I would come along a few years later. I came of age in the 1990s, which meant of course that I wasn't supposed to like this stuff. You know because of "grunge" and "alternative rock" and besides it was what my dad listened to. But I love Steely Dan and this song is wonderful.
The Dan is one of those bands whose sound is absolutely UNMISTAKABLE. Complex and yet easily enjoyed. There will never be another. 63 here and still a big fan of THE DAN.
Celebrating 49 years after the best year of my life 1974. What a year, what great memories. I was 20yrs old, best cars, best music, best girls I ever met including my wife, best everything. I will never fotget 74.
This year I turned 57 and my older sisters turned me on to the music of the 70’s ❤ I was not a teenager yet back then but I still love this music over any music ever made!
I remember coming back from surfing, driving in the fog with salt and sand drying on the car seat and my board and listening to this song for the first time. It was a perfect everyday kind of moment.
And the beauty is that because of this song you never have to lose that lightning in a jar moment . Thank you for sharing the visual for my my mind to transcribe and damn near feel I was there as well....
This was a great song back in 1974. I too was a teenager, a little different I was 19 yrs old in the United States Marine Corps. I was getting ready to deploy to Okinawa when this was a hit. Sad time for me had to say goodbye to my cute girl friend. After 2 months on Okinawa she mailed me the dreaded "Dear John Letter" broke my heart.
The way I see it is food keeps the body alive , but Music keeps the Soul Alive !!!! I literally do not think I could live without Music !!!! God Bless You !!!
I hear this and am transported back to age 16 summer of 1975; visiting family in the Hollywood Hills of California, laying on their deck suntanning with radio on & hearing this song for 1st time. Entrancing and always pulls me back to feeling young and so carefree, the warmth of the sun with the white Hollywood sign in the distance…glory days~🌸
@@reesemorgan2259 Oh it was a great trip, thank you. Was my 1st time to visit CA, flew into LA, CA with my mom. Fleetwood Mac band was on the plane too, didn’t realize who they were until ‘77 Rumours came out. My relatives took us sightseeing everywhere, oldest brother Robert-age 23 was in the Air Force in Nevada. He drove down in his topless jeep & took me to see Jaws movie, and Santa Monica Pier to see the ocean for 1st time eeek haha, I was kinda scared but got in knee deep. The Griffith Observatory, J Paul Getty Museum, baseball game @ Dodgers Stadium were highlights too. I wish I had my great aunt & uncles Hollywood address, as I want to see what the house & surroundings look like now. I remember homes being built below theirs because I had the “hots” for one of the construction framers who was tan-muscular & shirtless. My Great Aunt told me “he looks thirsty, you should take him something to drink”. I was too shy but looking back, I wish I would have! haha.
@@carletonharkins805 What? The entire 2 note “intro” ??? Good god! Call the cops!!That’s the entire song!!! Oh right…..it’s not anywhere even remotely CLOSE to the entire song, and you’re an idiot.
I heard that Donald Fagan was not fond of this composition, he said it was too simple and was played to much... Just a genius being too critical of his own work. As a musician, nothing simple about the music, so much too the song. Just great work! Timeless..
Steely Dan songs are most often a work of art. Like a painting hanging on the wall, each time one revisits there is another insight, another feeling, another twist of interpretation - totally unique, very creative, timeless and inimitable.
This is what has been lost with the Classic Rock Era; it wasn't just Zeppelin and Floyd and the Stones and the Beatles; it was Steely Dan and Yes and Savoy Brown and you can run the list for a quarter mile and not repeat yourself. Meanwhile Classic Rock stations of today's radio make it all seem like what we all despised in the day, top 40. RIP Walter. RIP Classic Rock, one more time.
The cream always comes to the top , after all these years I think if I wanted to hear my favorite play list I would just put on Steely Dan's greatest hits, boo,ya!!
Steely Dan is just so damn good. They are eternal and forever. I don't think you can get tired of listening to their music. You can always come back to their music and writing.
Agree with all on this thread. As a recreational singer songwriter I learn all the time from SD but I still just enjoy the feelings I get from every song (bar Riki if I’m honest). But when I need an emo change I’ll go to JJCale. Complete turnaround. I luv him and learn to take it easy. That’s about it I think ...
2021. Still sounds fresh as ever! Iconic band with great chemistry between Fagen and Becker (RIP)- interesting music and unparalleled song writing chops- the changes, the cool piano riff, the bossa nova bass line opener, harmonies, lyrics. I shall never tire of this.
@@charlesmaeger6162 thanks. I loved them from the time I was a kid and they influenced me greatly as a songwriter. I am a jazz musician and back in music school studying music therapy. I love turning the younger students on to this great music. We are generally asked to use 'client preferred music' when providing music therapy interventions. It seems Steely Dan is loved by all ages, once folks are exposed to their musical genius. The way they fused genres- rock, jazz and pop (think the #11 hit tune, 'Peg', and how wildly popular it was back in 1978), I honestly think Steely Dan is one of the most sophisticated groups to ever exist. They are truly one of a kind.
❤2024-I love Steely Dan! I love all music however Steely Dan it’s about lives and people and what everybody goes through it tells stories it tears me up inside in a good way! ✌️
I was 6, Dad and driving to, well, nowhere. Just driving around in Upstate NY. The sun coming down and this song comes on. America was a different world then. I miss it, I miss my dad.
I agree. Summer of 1974, I was in the United States Marine Corps home on 30 days leave, before I transferred to Okinawa. Remember this song and other ones before kissing my girlfriend goodbye. I kissed her goodbye then she cried like a baby. I felt so sorry for her. Semper Fi from an old Marine Sergeant.

That guitar solo by Jeff "Skunk" Baxter so impressed me as a 14 year old kid in 1974, and still does now at 64 in 2024. 50 years later it's still a treasure of musical art. We had such great music to grow up to!
Fun fact-skunk Baxter is a largely self taught rocket scientist who did trajectory calculations for nasa. No shit, right? Edit- had the details wrong. He testified for a congressional committee and consulted with the pentagon on missile defense technology. My bad.
Must have listened to this song 1,000 times....never gets old....always great..... Never disappoints....classic in every sense of the word. In 50 years people will say this is a timless classic! A gem! Thanks Steely Dan.

My mother forced me to take piano lessons, and I must admit I got pretty good with the classics, but Bach got boring and I wanted to play anything by Steely Dan, so I attempted to play the songs by ear. Mom surprised me one day with sheet music, and to this day I still have it. Donald and Walter have been around in my life for as far back as I can remember, and I will never forget how their music soothed me.
Same here man. I'm 49 and have heard these guys all my life and am familiar with all the radio hits. I can remember liking this song as a little kid. But only in the last couple of years I've developed a new appreciation. Stellar compositions and musicianship.
There's a reason it's called 'Dad Rock,' lol. Talk about layering. Just one word here, 'number' is a triple entendre, if that's a thing--number is a song, a CA term for a joint, and of course a phone number for a possible lover...sex, drugs and rock-n-roll all in one word...genius...
2024 still listening, got introduced to their music by my parents back in the 80’s on the old vinyl records when I was growing up and I’m still listening to this very day. Great music is timeless!

Yes, here in the United States there wasn't the generalized despair and fear there is today. I went to Sweden in 1980, it was almost unbelievably peaceful. Look at both nations today.
I saw Steely Dan live at The Music Hall in Houston, TX in 1973. I was only 18 years old. I remember it was an incredible performance. Their music is timeless.
@@barbmichalski6953 it's amazing to hear the sound track of my life. I can even conjure up the smell of the summer of 73. Heard Seals and Crofts today and the smell of wild ginger flooded my house, nearly knocking me over.
Funny how that works isn't it? From generation to generation....but most of the musicianship is gone now. It's all blend ins, electronics and how many dancers (distractions) you can have standing behind you. Just perform. Most don't even SING anymore. We had singers that covered the whole spectrum of color, race, creed, religion, etc. Now it's just electronics and gimmicks galore! I hear a lot of talking, but not a lot of singing.....all about anger and death and poverty and injustice, and war, but not done the way our generation did it, where the outcome you desired was...peace! Not more anger.....and ignorance.

Xoxo
Wow that's amazing
Great story. Peace.
Thank you for sharing, during the morning hours my beloved sister of memory, Bente, passed and without great music I've listened to all day, my heart could not accept this passing nor heal from it, it is so extraordinary, it also was there for you ...

We were so lucky to grow up in the 70's with artists that knew how to write music
Michael Payne You are so right. They just don't make music like this anymore. It is a great loss for everyone
Michael Payne 100% true. Maybe someone from my generation will make good music like this as a backlash to the overproduced formula of today.
Michael Payne 60's -70's.
Lennon said "Aren't you glad the 70's are over?" Then he was gone.
I wish I grew up back then. I'm glad I found Steely Dan before I saw pop culture of this era. :)
Ian Benedict They were such exciting days. Brilliant music, hot chicks and the Vietnam war was on!!!
As a child of the 70s I am transported back in time. Shopping at TG&Y, conleys, ben franklin Woolworths, pop in glass bottles, huffy bicycle les, 8 tracks, should I go on? Loved the 70s. Miss them everyday!!!
Back when the music touched your mind, and not insulted it.
It is a piece of stellar art.. this is just they did
Music usually touches the mind of the current generation as it is a direct reflection of they time in which they live. To us it may be offensive, because it does not reflect our current state. I’m sure our folks felt awful about this music.

Lovin this. Don't loose that number. Oh yeah.
Born in the right generation, having access to good music like this
There is no "wrong" generation, ever hear big band jazz? Mozart? Louis Armstrong?
I wasn't even born when this song came out. I would come along a few years later. I came of age in the 1990s, which meant of course that I wasn't supposed to like this stuff. You know because of "grunge" and "alternative rock" and besides it was what my dad listened to.
But I love Steely Dan and this song is wonderful.
1974, I was 19 yrs old in the United States Marine Corps. I had this cassette and worn it out. Id go back to 1974, and stay.
When the day comes I hope I've already passed because that would definitely Marc the end of I !!!

I know exactly what you mean. I think art (music in this case) is viewed as a luxury- when I see it(especially for youngsters) as a necessity.

Truly one of the greatest songs ever written.
You can't say 'its one of the greatest', when Steely Dan stole the intro from Horace Silver's "Song for My Father".

@@charlesmaeger6162 thanks. I loved them from the time I was a kid and they influenced me greatly as a songwriter. I am a jazz musician and back in music school studying music therapy. I love turning the younger students on to this great music. We are generally asked to use
'client preferred music' when providing music therapy interventions.
