I think my biggest problem with this DLC is that it could have been so much more. Or that it should have been so much more. Let me take you back to arma2. In armed assault 2 this mod was far bigger. For instance if I remember correctly the FIA had a menagerie of equipment and vehicles. Matter fact there were so many vehicles and equipment for the FIA that I never got to use all of them. The mod itself was so big that my computer had a hard time running it and my old computer was not cheap in terms of hardware. I distinctly remember the FIA having such outlandish equipment like full on M1 Abrams tanks and A-10s along side stuff like uaz’s and btr-40’s. And I also remember the CS LA being one of the few factions you could mod into the game that had a actual working Mig-29. that alone is what actually sold me on downloading that mod all those years ago. Jumping back to the present when I had heard that this creator DLC was going to be released by that same team one could say I was quite excited. It honestly bummed me out that I wasn’t able to download a CS LA mod like the one in the past. So hearing that that same team would be releasing CS LA as creator DLC was very welcome news. When I heard that it had finally dropped on the steam store, you can imagine my surprise and excitement. Of course like purchasing anything I like to go ahead and see what other people think of it and you can also imagine my even further surprised in seeing how poorly it was received. So I did my research by looking at videos like yours and some other videos that were a bit more, how do I put this, angry. I think that’s the best way I can put it. And quite honestly I don’t blame those people who are angry that this CDLC is in the state that it is in. As much as I was upset at the state of this DLC, I was more sad. I was upset the Bohemia let this get put up in the state that it’s in. But I was also upset with this studio which has been known for its fantastic mod, that they would put this out for people to pay for. Well I will admit that the map is quite pretty I have also seen very similar work in the form of mods. Now this isn’t to say that I could do any better as I have very little experience but I have seen people who do have experience that have done the same work. I’m a pretty big stickler for sound as well. I personally have a vendetta against the vanilla sounds being used in mods or content that is being sold to me and other arma 3 players. But that is simply a personal thing. I would even go so far as to say the reuse of all the armor to assets isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I’m sure there are many a creator who use armor to assets to fill in for future assets. Or perhaps they use those arma 2 assets as a skeleton of sorts to build better vehicles and equipment. I only hope that the creators of this CDLC at least update their product. I personally think that this could be a lot more than what it is and that perhaps it will be in the future. I personally will not be spending my money on this and I would urge others to think heavily on whether or not they want to put money down on this creator DLC. However if there are significant improvements done for this creator DLC I may rethink purchasing it. Like you said and like many other people have probably said, these devs have put their time and an obvious amount of effort into the CDLC. But the same could be said for global mobilization and SOG prairie fire. Both of which were received a lot better, and frankly were done a lot better. Like you said there’s a skeleton there, an obvious skeleton. But there’s no muscles to it and there’s no real skin to it. It’s just a bare-bones creator DLC.
Therunaway thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts. I myself have distant but fond memories of playing the first iteration of the CSLA mod in operation flashpoint and remember the epic campaign it had. Also because this was "back in the day" internet speeds were not great...what a beast to download lol. On the subject of memories I think this further enhanced peoples expectations...the pure good nostalgic vibes on top of the goodwill obtained by GM & SOG has very much contributed to the hostility (not defending the state of this release, merely pointing out more contributions to the fire) I really do hope they flesh this skeleton out otherwise it will remain a mere flavour pack. I'm still really really baffled about lack of campaign. Sandbox n dynamic missions are great but people still enjoy abit of structure and something to get their teeth into. Such a shame. HazBo
Great review. I believe this DLC has great potential but requires a lot of work. CSLA studio has always been famous for high-quality mods that surpassed even vanilla in quality. I expected that thanks to this DLC we would finally get the Mi-17 and T-72 in the same quality that GM offered us because I got bored with all the mods using the Arma 2 models. Unfortunately, the Mi-17 and T-72 are only tuned models from Arma 2. CSLA The studio has always produced great quality SP campaigns and I was counting on the same for this DLC. Reload animations look bad and in the case of UK vz. 59 downright disgusting. I don't mind using vanilla animations where possible, but "telekinetic" reloading of a machine gun should not be done in the paid DLC. The map is a big plus of this DLC. Even though it also uses the assets of vanilla and previous installments of the series, it does it well. The map is consistent and beautiful. I am not one of those people who hate this DLC because I see its great potential, but constructive criticism is needed. I believe CSLA Studio will improve the quality and expand this DLC in the next updates. Sorry for my bad English. A thumbs up and a sub for this video.
Hi Nacjo Farmer, exactly right....it could of been so much more, the lack of SP campaign still confuses me. I hope your right and it continues to get post release support/updates. Oh and your English is great...better than mine lol. Welcome to the channel! :-D
Is it so wrong? I love this DLC. Ok, I’m not that experienced so this has come along at just the right time, I like Prarie Fire as well, but am still scratching my head about how to use it in SP without just being a single sneaky spec ops person. This one? Really enjoying myself and I love the period. I was in the military myself around this time. Yes, I’m too old to be playing video games ;)
BTW, I am expecting updates including a campaign. My opinion will change if there are no updates to fix the occasional bug and to flesh out the product. But for now I’m enjoying the scenarios, and the EXPO one does allow me to replay with a different mission so I’m not bored yet.
Julian, Not at all dude some people are finding value in this especially where price tag is concerned. My personal gripe is that it could of been so much more and I hope your correct in your expectations of a campaign, they could really do some interesting things here. Prairie Fire is for all intent and purposes geared towards a multiplayer experience. There is a custom SP campaign on the workshop call green hell that looks promising for your SP fix. If you like this period, you'll love the next playthrough...got some OFP remastered coming up! ps your never too old to game....you heard of that skyrim grandma? your fine dude lol.
Honestly, i ain't too bothered by the ArmA 2 assets themselves. But i would expect a solid working experience, and from what i've seen, theres is some bugs here and there, and some unfinished stuff. If the CSLA team fix those issues, im going to buy it.
Yeah looking at a few other tubers in the arma community they have highlighted some very obvious bugs that really need addressing asap considering it's a paid product. As I said I think the skeletons there for a whopper of a dlc but wether they flesh it out or not will probably impact my final recommendation/conclusion. We'll have to wait n see what the future holds.
Got all the other DLC (including Karts - OUCH!), but wasn't tempted by this one as I can knock up this kind of thing with Global Mobalisation and a few mods already.
It is a rather nice map, the question is is it justifiable paying a tenner for it...there are not to dissimilar offerings on the workshop. While it does include custom buildings there really isn't too many compared to something like weferlingen from GM. However I suppose if you own both there are alot of items which would work together to create even more diversity Again this is gonna be so subjective and different to nearly everyone I've spoken too about it. Either way I hope you enjoy your purchase jmurkz. Thanks for popping by.
@@HazBofficial Thank you for the reply that alone is worth a sub from me. As an Operation Flashpoint player (yes I am that old) CSLA where churning out quality kit from that title on. Hey HazBo, interesting video, as always. I have a theory about this Iron Curtain CDLC. Just pointing out that I’m writing this before the 20th anniversary of OFP/Arma (happy 20th birthday!!!)… …my theory is that Iron Curtain was supposed to come out ages ago in 2020. This would be between Global Mobilisation and Prairie Fire, but for whatever reason it had severe delays. The timing of its release only being about 5 weeks after Prairie Fire is a bit strange in itself, but I suspect that BI wanted it released BEFORE 22nd June to allow clear air for whatever BI might be wanting to say about the future of the Arma franchise. This would explain the “cut price” cost and the the fact that Iron Curtain doesn’t feel quite “finished”. Basically I think they rushed it out the door just to get it out of the way. I was quite disappointed with the quality of the first CDLC and thought it was a bit cheap and quite limited in its campaign, etc and I think BI learned their lesson on that which is partly why Prairie Fire is so fantastic. I expected to be under-whelmed by Iron Curtain and I have to say I’m not disappointed (the map looks nice, but it’s not better than Livonia). I was disappointed that they didn’t even bother with an intro cinematic or some cut scenes to “set the scene” - it seemed like a real opportunity missed to create its own context, but, nope there’s just a handful of disconnected missions. At least Global Mobilisation tried to create some kind of “world” that it operated in, as much as its intro cinematic was quite amateurish for something they are asking money for. Even though I had low expectations I bought it anyway because I’m a collector (I.e. “sucker”!) of all Arma offerings :) One idea for you…you inspired me to try Liberation for the first time and it took me hours and hours to work it out. Maybe you could do some tutorials of some different game modes. Hints and tips as to how you set them up and play them, etc? Keep up the great vids, mate!
"it seemed like a real opportunity missed to create its own context, but, nope there’s just a handful of disconnected missions." This all the way Glenn! The main reason for feeling so....deflated. I can forgive the rehash or retex assets and the bugs to some extent as it COULD have stood on its own merit with a campaign which could of thrown us into an alternative history rich with actual history and arma lore. Thank you for the suggestion. I've always wanted to do an ALiVE and/or Vindicta video....Alive is a powerful tool which needs more exposure than it gets and Vindicta is great but Antistasi always seems to steal the thunder. Cheers mate :D
I feel very 'meh' about Iron Curtain. While it certainly is nowhere close to the size or quality of Prarie Fire it is quite a bit cheaper. I would say that unless you're a mission maker or otherwise feel like you will get a lot of mileage out of the new terrain (unlike me) then just skip this one or pick it up for a few bucks on sale. I've not played all of the scenario missions yet but like you said, they're short and nothing spectacular. I also keep having to restart missions because certain triggers fail to fire and I end up getting soft locked. I haven't had a chance to give the multiplayer mode a try yet either and that is what has me the most interested. Hopefully it's a ton of fun and a good number of people will be playing it but I'm not getting my hopes up.
Yeah Butch Know what you mean about the whole "meh" thing. It was difficult to record, obviously it just isn't up there with the previous cdlcs quality but the price somewhat softens the blow...but not by much. I also experienced some trigger problems on the Battlefield scenario. Maybe when the dust settles there will be a couple of populated servers. I'm interested to know if we are going to receive post release support and if so how much.
i dont have a lot of issues with the CSLA DLC. i was let down that we didnt get their local language. its weird hearing the OPFOR units and FIA speak american english. That was a missed opportunity too.
Yeah such a strange omission. Still cant get over the non inclusion of a campaign but i believe something has released in the workshop in that regards so will have to revisit sometime.
Another kick in the guts, it is currently 10% off LOL. I actually like the map and have bigger things to worry about than 10 bucks for a cDLC. A lot of ppl think they did a half arsed job of it, however it is getting compared to GM and SOG which were twice the price so... I think I will get my moneys worth out of the map and if they update/improve it a bit that would be good too.
Hi Johnny, Yes another reason I didn't wanna go full negative tilt Especially considering its price point Some people are indeed finding value in this cDLC whilst others do not. Again its another reason I found this particular video hard to script, the money vs content line was definitely more blurry. You are correct regarding the comparisons...but that's the sticking point for many...are all cDLC's going to be different in scope/scale and pricing? I think having 2 releases at or around the £20 mark then having a 3rd release at half the price with what some people would call questionable content is inevitably going to cause the issues/concerns we have witnessed.
@@HazBofficial Yeah, it sure ruffled some feathers. SOG set the bar fairly high so although I had a open mind I did expect CSLA to be pretty good considering the nature of cDLC. Some areas fell short but I guess if I set up my missions in the editor, mix in a few mods and put a few hours in on the map I am happy enough. I have close to a decade in 3D, animation, rigging, SFX and one of my faves is terrain building, but I am a lazy prick so I guess 10 bucks is a easy way out for some fresh ground.
Only reason i haven't bought this CDLC is because everything is ripped from Arma 2. I paid for SOG and omfg it's amazing! Imho every CDLC should be on par with SOG, i mean we ARE paying for these.
Yeah the bar they set (and, to be fair, GM as well - after subsequent updates) is really high. like the base game Its greater than the sum of its parts and really sets the "mood"... its an "experience" for sure. Felt sorry for CSLA, it was a tough act to follow, especially so SOON after SOG and I truly believe there is much more than meets the eye...'something' went on behind the scenes I'm sure of it. As I'm scouring UA-cam and catching up on comments I think this may deserve another look to see if subsequent big fixes and workshop campaign makes this anymore of a worthwhile purchase.
Good, honest and calm spotlight. It’s a shame it’s not particularly good but I thought your comments were nice and balanced. Sadly with CUP, 3CB and RHS mods doing the same job for free there is little incentive to buy this DLC. I would love the map but none of my group are buying it and as I make missions for them it’d never get a mission made on it. Shame really. But after Prairie Fire anything short of brilliant was going to get the haters hating. At least it stopped them moaning about the lack of Arma 4 for a day or two.
Exactly bazza there is nothing to grab and hook you in and I suppose nostalgia can only do so much. The map, whilst good, isn't something that's dissimilar from workshop offerings. I wish more terrains did use the assets found in weferlingen and gebreta from GM and CSLA respectively. GM had an awesomely huge map with tonnes of custom assets along with superb quality vehicles n weapons. Plus something a wee bit different campaign wise instead of a stereotypical usa v ussr SOG had a good standard of quality throughout, a very nice map, a coop campaign and a awesome multiplayer mode. The atmosphere it generated made up for any short comings CSLA simply doesnt have anything to set it apart really. Damn shame. What a campaign they could of had.
Thank god I didn't bought this DLC, looks dissapointing. I would rather keep playing the Prairie Fire DLC, cause it's by far the best DLC for Arma 3. Basically you just bought a new map and recycled models from Arma 2 or CUP mods. There's an alternative to the 80's US or Soviet forces mods for Arma just download CW3 (Cold War Arma 3) mods for free and its by far still better than CSLA DLC. Save your money
Hi Kilgore, I think few people would see any argument with you here. However Each to their own as they say. PF is a fantastic bit of cDLC, between that and GM I think it has really set the bar for any other potential cDLC. Talking of Cold war mods...Cold War Rearmed team have not long released their CWC campaign remaster. Lets Play incoming. Should bring some good olde' memories back.
Going to be honest, I didn't try out the arma 2 iteration of this mod. I think my only personal experience of it was back in opflash days. I remember some shady translations in the campaign but still enjoyed it. I'll have to load up arma 2 sometime and see what players were getting from the CSLA team for free and do a wee comparison or something. food for thought.
This has been the only CDLC that hasn’t gotten an update yet, wonder if it even will get one
I'm not upset at the mod makers, I'm upset at bohemia for greenlighting this

Thanks for this review. I was actually going to buy this. Now, I won't because there is no campaign.
Plus something a wee bit different campaign wise instead of a stereotypical usa v ussr
SOG had a good standard of quality throughout, a very nice map, a coop campaign and a awesome multiplayer mode. The atmosphere it generated made up for any short comings
CSLA simply doesnt have anything to set it apart really.
It’s a crappy copy and paste of the team’s Arma 2 mod, a mod that weirdly has more content and works more smoothly than this
Going to be honest, I didn't try out the arma 2 iteration of this mod. I think my only personal experience of it was back in opflash days. I remember some shady translations in the campaign but still enjoyed it.
I'll have to load up arma 2 sometime and see what players were getting from the CSLA team for free and do a wee comparison or something. food for thought.
