Sometimes it's fun just to try switching it up, I swapped trx4 axles into my scx 10 ii and got height adjustable shock towers to lower the cg, the thing handles like you wouldn't believe, to me it's finally the truck I wanted it to be. It geared it down some too which made it so amazing for crawling. It out-crawls my trx 4 all day long and twice on Sunday. A little tricky to get it all set up but totally worth it imho. It hardly ever bottoms out and the offset pumpkin is great. Little extra weight down low too. To me it's a win win, I didn't do it to my ultra scale truck, but for a climber truck, I say DO IT if you enjoy modding, whether it makes sense or not!!
Great looking rig, and performs pretty well. They reason I'd consider getting straight axles on my SXC10-iii would be purely for the scale aspect. Really looks good. Thanks, Francis.
Love you work bro. A mate of mine stripped his down and got rid of the 2 speed and replaced it with the OG 3 gear trans. It done great with portals I have some footage of it on my channel. He has since put the hard body back on and still performs great.
Am I the only one that questions the point of this mod? If someone bought the SCX10III but didn’t like the portal axles, why didn’t they just buy the 10II? This makes absolutely no sense to me.
I'm curious to know as well. I know the 10.3 has a dig and 2-speed transmission, but some people have had clicking issues with them and with all money and work put into it, it doesn't really seem worth it. It'd be interesting to see a straight axle 10.3 up against the 10.2.
It's more scale and accurate. Also one can lower the center of gravity quite a bit on this top heavy vehicle. With the same 90 mm shocks, the body and chassis will be lower. Better climbing and less toppling over. Anyway, it's about options for the owner.
@@mickd8188 fr I want a gladiator but I don't want portals. If they came with a non portal version without having to pay the extra money I'd definitely get one
thank you for all your reviews and tutorials ! just got into the hobby and I've learned a ton from just your channel! also not sure if your aware but down the road there's a really nice park with an empty man made creek you can follow it all the way around with different obstacles, Serra Park in Sunnyvale!, glad to also see your a local!
It's a good upgrade performer! (B+) Also (Frances), the (RGT Jimny v3) from banggood, i have a mixed feeling of this new jeep, if you tested on your next video soon, Nice job on the coversion kit.
Interesting video, but I have some notices. Some real crawlers have portal axle, for instance there are many videos about Land Rover pickup with portals and without any issue about center of gravity. Curiously in this days I did the opposite upgrade putting metal portals on my Wrangler SCXII ! I got a lovely look (putting down the body of 3mm) and the few rollover problems where easily overcome with a few weights (15+15) next to the slides (using plastic portals, may be needed metal wheels and more weights). Today we did a match with my friend with an excellent SCXII upgraded for hard climbing with standard straight axles... and the mine with portals has the same results in all the patterns and at limit slopes ! My opinion is that portals, plus a right overweight, gain (nearly) same rollover performance, but clearance is a advantage that has true value in some really wild patterns !! I have already bought the same metal portal kit for my Reely Free Man, that has Axial compatible axles !
You could probably save at least $70 by buying the axle parts separately without the 100mm shocks. Which would give you even more of an LCG benefit. I prefer straight axles to portals, the clearence gain from portals is not worth the CG gain in my opinion. How about a 10.3 raw builders kit with a choice of axles Axial??? I would pre order one today!
If there is a clicking sound in the transmission the gear ⚙️ are on the wrong side of the gear ⚙️ there is a U that is the right side. The other side has flat bottom. That is not the side you want.
I’ve never understood the point of buying a 10.3 and then removing the portals for a straight axle kit. If that’s what you’re planning then buy a 10.2 🤷♂️
I see a lot of people going straight axel, and 3 gear. Straight axel kit is $170, 3 gear is like $50 plus whatever the skid plate to put the 3 gear on. A raw builders kit $200, and you can easily retrofit the 10.3 body in the 10.2 chassis.
@@Rowdy216 exactly my point!!! If you want scale then the 10.3 is the wrong choice! Doesn’t make sense to me. Kind of like buying a V6 and then swapping to a v8 motor shortly after lol
if everything is about LCG and weight being low offset diffs are a NO No I am in a dilema wether to go portal or straight . portal raise CG but can be compesated by shorter shocks but this is not LCG as the distance from the touching tyre tread and the hex centre can not be reduced unless you reduce tyres size. crawling scale or belly draggers dedicated for rock and terrain obsticles are 2 different diciplines one is looking Right scale axles wheels and body detail and the other is pure Engineering imo
Yeah this one is a little bit noisy so we don’t run it too much unless with others with the same motor. On the bright side it got rid of the clicking noise of the vehicle
Yeah we had to Traxxas wheels for the table talk but we decided to use vanquish wheels for the real test. Also proline hyrax tires at work is what we use for most tests.
@@shannoncold i know, but diesels dosn make that sharp sound. The eletronic amplifies the sound enough, I think. it migth be good, but that sound would ruin my day in the woods or other place. -just my opinion :-)
i always laugh when people say portals aren’t scale. the unimog portals are a real axle and can be put under any rig. ill tell u whats not scale are the hyrax tires. jeeps never came with coilovers so thats not scale either from what you’re saying.
I just entered the rc rock crawling hobby and I LOVE your content, thank you.

id keep the longer shocks but run softer or more progresssive springs to lower it that way you still have more droop.

Glad he got the kit. We didn't even need to pay to check the differences.
Portals aren’t ‘scale’ but neither is dig. I like the look, good job.

Yeah the straight axle conversion seems like a $200 downgrade to me. But I understand it is more scale looking.

The high quality body with interior and inner fenders would also be a factor in choosing a 10iii aswell as the dig etc....

My belly dragger with trx axles does everything I can throw at it, my belly dragger with vitavon straight-axles disappoints me
Great video, but i still don't get people saying portal axles arnt scale. Portal axles are real, they just don't come stock and are expensive.
Yeah but how often do you see them on a jeep? Shits pretty rare tbh and really only done on crazy builds.
Axial screwed up. Portals on their Jeep’s but not the Unimog? For shame
My thoughts exactly. Dynatrak makes portal kits for d60s.
Thats nice jeep body!
also there is a real jeep forward cab that has dynatrac portal axles so its pretty scale to me

I want to buy your stock portal axles 😊
The sound of that out runner would drive me nuts. Is there that much of an advantage over a brushless in-runner to put up with that annoying whine?
Are these straight axles different than the ones in the 10.2 trucks or the .2 raw builders kit?
Why would you go str8 axle for scx10iii?
Converting to a scx10ii is like going backwards.
Just wondering what all the hype was about the portal axles then???
COOL
You just can't let that song go can you ! Lol
No......”THATS GOOD” 😂
It’s definitely obnoxious when it plays the whole time
Yes it looks like it could use some weigth in the front. And think homesmotors are very nosy! Great videos. Greetings from Denmark 🇩🇰
Only the revolvers are noisy, but so are diesels.
Yes some low weight and shorter shocks will do wonders for this vehicle.

The motor is a Holmes Revolver. The motor position on this vehicle is pretty high so I light motor is good
What is the location of that crawling area? I could of swore you said Linda Vista. I'm down in East Chula Vista.
Hi do they do a kit for the new honcho? I have a hard time finding upgrades for the honcho. Thank you
What HH outrunner is this?
Great vids keep up the good work.
It’s a Holmes revolver 1800
Regular or stubby.
I want to try one in my Gspeed but I'm skeptical.
Cool vid. But that motor has a very loud high pitch sound. Using ear buds and had to turn volume very low just to watch it. 🤙

I've only seen rc4wd portal axles that look scale. Trx4, scx10 III and redcat gen 8 v2 portal axles looks very strange.
It is loking good, but it sounds so ugly.. omg
That NOISE its because of the MOTOR!
Those revolvers are REALLY LOUD.
VERY POWERFULL THOUGTH, BUT NOISY
Should have just brought the scx10 ii more money than sense

Great video but yet another example of axial ripping off it's customers.
Now put the portals under your UMG.
Portals on a jeep just don't look right imo
A lot more stable
