Sticking with my 10.3 portals. I added trx-4 shocks with 5mm of fuel tubing to limit articulation, dropped some weight from the body, printed the Knights Custom kit for it, and she's been a joy to drive minus our frozen tundra in Montana lately.
New axles look great! I too am looking forward to seeing what new trucks / RTRs / body styles Axial might come out with next. I'd be happy to see the JL RTR with the straight axles. I won't get my hopes too high though. The way Axial is doing things lately, they'll probably release a new Bronco with the straight axle, then come out with an IFS, and put it on a Power Wagon!
if your snagging roots with these straight axles then the 1:1 jeep would do the same considering these are 1 10 scale of a real vehicle. I've yet to snag roots in my 1 to 1 jeep & I nor anyone else owns a 1 to 1 Jeep with Portals there's no such thing it's goofy & causes your center of gravity to raise way up, side hillings awful & they just look dumb

AXIAL needs to try some Nissans. GU for instance. 4 door wagon, 2 door shorty, 4 door ute, 2 door Ute with flatbed or tub. So many options with just the 1 model.

I've decided to go with the JL kit and also ordered the straight axle kit but I also ordered the Bowhouse 3 gear trans adapter and am gonna run the og trans. Once again your videos have given me information in helping me make the decisions on which route to go on this next build. 👍

Im happy Axial put this out. It just expands what we can build. I would want this ExCepT for one tough comparison... a complete 10.2 builders kit is $200. I think $ for $ it may not add up. But i still like it.
I was in the process of cutting and modifying the portals into a portal delete kit, but will just use this instead. These will be going on a VS4-10 chassis kit with a VFD transmission, under an XJ hard body.
Well, that should help bring the weight closer to the ground... But there would be some roll center changes too (the links will have different angles). So it should handle a little different in comparison to the portal axle equipped model, and I'm not just talking about having more snags from the reduced ground to axle clearance.
@@nukedathlonman my guess is they're the Capra's shock body/shaft etc with maybe a different rod end to take them from 98 to 100mm (or just the same). So yes a decent shock sold separately. Cheers mate 👍

First generation scx10 guys like me should make a Statement about the bad turning radius. I should have a receiver that goes that goes beep beep beep ever time I use reverse. Turning radius is nearly 3times larger than my gmade.

I'm getting this kit, and running the 100m shocks so I dont have to go down to the 4.5 tires for proper clearance under compression, and so I can build a 1 to 1 of my daily Ram 1500 I own
Planning on building a low cog 2dr xj and these would be perfect under it, will wait a while hoping they bring out a iii builders kit with these axles though
So I'm not an absolute purest, but I'm /t/ staying with the portals, liking the looks and extra ground clearance of the portals. I have straight axles on my SCX 10 and 10II, so I'm happy with those. I'd rather spend the $ on another builders kit.
If I had a scx10iii I would def do this. I would be mad I had to spend the money on it though. Hope we see the rtr with straight axles. Other body choices would be the ultimate. Maybe a umg10 short wheel base portals. Then something new that has straight axles. We def need new licenses for bodies.

I'd be interested to see comparison tests between sintered gears and machine cut gears (hardness tests, destructive running tests). For my VS4-10 Ultra, I bought the upgrade machined gear set for the VFD transmission, because the portal axles came with machined gears and I have a bit of OCD... All sintered or all machined, but a mix is annoying for some reason. Anyway, I hear a lot of negativity toward sintered gears and people spending money to upgrade, but is that money well spent? Sintered gears are VERY durable, literally ALL cordless power tools use them. Milwaukee, DeWalt, Porter Cable, Bosch, and even Hilti, and when these tools wear out, it's the bearings, motors, and electronics that generally fail, not the gears.

I think they should have put portals on the umg10 as the 1:1 version has and keep straith axles for normal trucks, unless jeep decide to put portals on their trucks ;) or like someone said, they also could give the option when you buy it at the start. Btw I've installed portals on my umg10 with shorter shocks and it's now my favorite truck of the 5 I have.

I think it looks great and to each their own. The whole reason I picked up the iii was because of the portals. Axial has put out a really great product for a long time with straight axles so it was nice to see an addition to line-up. I love my ii and quickly becoming attached to the gladiator. Appreciate your videos as always!

Wouldn't removing the portals reverse the direction of wheel rotation? Did they counteract this by flipping the differentials?

I already have shock mount with the panhard bar mount I originally made one of these out of a cutting board and Link arms it was a very good crawler

Great video, im going to be swapping them onto my 10.3 gladiator and will probably be keeping the 90mm shocks as im running 4.19 km3s on it.
The 90mm shocks make a world of difference in the looks department. You lose a little uptravel, but that's a compromise I'm willing to make.

For 99$, i would consider getting this kit for a future overlan gladiator build. But at 170$ it’s quite expensive (plus the 520$ truck)

Have you run this on the stock 90mm shocks yet? Does it cause a bunch of rubbing issues with 4.75” tires on the 90mm shocks?
You lose a lot of uptravel, and will likely cause some rubbing.

Why not use a VFD? Sort of made for it! Wraith link geometry isn't something I specialize in. Try it and see!
