DBACKs is explainable though. The pitching staff was injured the majority of the year and the starters haven’t looked great even when they have played. This has lead to the bullpen being overworked and having a 6.ERA in September.

You know what's really bad? Correa is having a career year. .319/.390/.520 with a 154 OPS+. Oh and he's 87th %-tile in OAA. Sure, those numbers would probably go down a little bit over a full season, but he's hitting the ball hard again, elite plate discipline. And it's all wasted. Byron Buxton's having a great year too. Twins fan here, I would argue that there’s a chance that the Twins fanbase has it worse than Oakland. Think about it, we go on a HORRIFIC postseason losing streak, 20 years later we’re ready for same ol same ol but we actually win a series, then win a game against Houston but lose the series, then the literal SECOND our season ends our owners tell us they’re cutting payroll cause of a TV deal falling though. AND THEN…after the huge momentum of the playoff run before, we go super cheap in free agency, don’t do ANYTHING at the deadline, and then are handcuffed when we have no depth and collapse in the most EMBARRASSING way possible…like that’s “pull the rug out” bad to the fans.

Basically, ownership believed the fan base was satisfied because the team finally won a playoff series after 20 years. They immediately cut payroll by 30 million, then did nothing at the trade deadline. Combine that with Joe Ryan being lost for the season in early August, Max Kepler going out, Correa being out for almost two months, Buxton missing significant time again, and Lewis doing the slump thing, this collapse wasn't that surprising in retrospect.

    • @SimoNico81

I was at the game where Joe Ryan got hurt in Chicago, and I had an overwhelming sense of dread that this was the beginning of the end for them. Not like he was keeping them afloat but it seemed like by that point they just couldn't take another big hit with how inconsistent pitching already was and with the other big injuries. And I was right. Womp womp.

This collapse had a very similar story to how the 2021 Padres collapsed. Because of the regular season schedule at that time, the Padres literally ONLY played contenders for the final 3 weeks of the regular season. Combine that with the fact that the front office didn’t acquire vital starting pitchers at the trade deadline, and you get a historic collapse.
This Twins collapse like the Padres collapse also had 2 parts to it. The declining Twins team combined with the totally unexpected rise of another team. And that team of course is the Tigers. The Padres collapse combined with the totally unexpected rise of the Cardinals who went on a 17 game winning streak in September including a 3 game sweep of those Padres. If the Cardinals and Tigers didn’t go on those historic hot streaks, these similar collapse stories wouldn’t have happened.
In some ways it was also like the Cubs last year blowing a 92% chance on September 6th by faltering against playoff teams at the end of the season and couldn’t even beat the Rockies and Pirates in that span. But unlike the Twins and 2021 Padres, the Cubs were not expected to be good last year and were bad for most of the first half of the season anyway. Thanks for explaining the details about this collapse. Basically, you don’t deserve to be a playoff team if you can’t compete with other great teams.

I have no dog in the hunt here, but as a Tigers (non-native) fan it got me thinking about the difference between their success and the Twins failure.
At least in my calculations, it seems to come down to team dynamics, organizational quirks or conditions and the clubhouse and how the players either fit or don't. Perhaps too many square pegs for a lot of round holes? It feels like the Twins since Kirby Puckett and Joe Mauer have just been "off"; never hitting on all cylinders as an organization. A legacy of injuries to crucial players makes you cringe and wonder what the hell is going on there?
It is sad to see such a proud franchise struggle so mightily these days. I hope that whatever it is that is holding the Twins back eventually sorts itself out, whether that is ownership, front office, coaching staff or ?. I miss having a good Twins team.
