I had the honor of meeting Dio once in a hotel bar after a concert. Not only is he one of the greatest vocalists to ever grace this planet he was a true gentleman and appreciated his fans.
How nice!
He was a local guy growing up, but I never got to meet him. I did see him in a *tiny* club outside of Seattle back in 1999 or 2000, couldn't have been more than 60 people there. We traded horns a couple times, one of the best shows I've ever been to. He was absolutely on point.
@@Nothing-zw3yd This is the concert my buddy and I attended. We stayed at a hotel across the street from the venue so we could party a little. When we got back to the hotel Dio's band was sitting in the bar waiting on their bus. They were the only ones in there so we went in and were able to chat with all the band members, got autographs, and everything.
Scorpions
Deep Purple
Dio
Polaris Amphitheater, Columbus, OH - Jun 16, 2002
I had the same experience. I sneaked around the back of a venue after one of his shows in the mid 90's. Security caught me but just as I was about to be escorted off of the premises, his tour manager came out the back door and told the security guards to leave me be. He told me that Ronnie and the rest of the band were cooling down with some beers on the tour bus and he would come out and meet me in 20 minutes. About 45 minutes later, i'm standing next to the tour bus and now there is a line of fans about a mile long behind me waiting to meet him. When he came out he was so nice. He signed my banner. He literally had more questions for me than I had for him. He wanted to know my name, where I was from what I did for a living and more. That was a great experience in my life.
One of Ronnie's underappreciated singing qualities is his unparalleled enunciation/clarity in his singing... he is one of the VERY few singers that you can clearly understand every word in every song - to the point where you don't need an album sleeve or lookup the lyrics online to learn the words.
I would say Jack Black and Floor Jansen have similar clarity.
@@MikkoRantalainen I've never heard Floor Jansen sing, but Jack Blade is horrible IMO
This is very true. Ronnie & Eric Adams, who both happens to be among my favourite singers, have this skill in common.
And Halford. At least for me.
@@svetlanaandrasova6086 I love Rob more in Two and Halford than I did in JP... he seemed to sing pretty pitchy in his higher register (especially in the 70s and early 80s)
You can't understand Dio's vocal power and skills without hearing the song Mistreated by Rainbow, the live version from 1977 in Munich.
Of course it would HAVE to be the live version, the studio version is by Deep Purple and sung by David Coverdale 😀
@@erikthompson619 Coverdale's version is also excellent, but it's a very different song when David sings it.
I like the " ON STAGE " version better
@@erikthompson619 Dio version is another level, more powerful, with better technique proficiency, control and consistency live.
That's kinda correct, but many would argue, that David's bluesy and raw tone fits the song more. One of those peeps is my father for example. I like both equally.@@luamoliveira3467
Dio, idk WHY took so much time to me to discover this guy... I love him so much. The Stargazer song is the most beautiful thing I've heard in my life.
Check out the song "Catch the Rainbow" from Rainbow (Studio and then do live in Munich 1977). Softer sound and beautiful as well.
My favorite Rainbow song since i heard it as a very young teenager is "Rainbow Eyes".. soooo much emotion in that song :) There are sooo many good songs with Dio as the vocalist, be it Rainbow, Black Sabbath, or the self titled "Dio". Just explore :)
Check out his Black Sabbath years
Heaven & Hell
Mob Rules & Dehumanizer
If you want to be really blown away check out Ronnie James Dio in his very early years. The Band Ronnie Dio and the Prophets and the songs "Blue Days, Blue Nights" and "Walking in Different Circles". These are back in the late 50's when he was just starting out, the Doo Wop years.
@@PlacidDragon”Rainbow Eyes” is one of my all time favorites. My first Rainbow album was Long Live Rock 'n' Roll back in 1978. I quickly picked up the first two albums. I have also picked up his albums from Elf. RJD is a genre unto himself.
I am thankful to Elizabeth for introducing you to this amazing musician and vocalist.
I met him after his show here in Chicago at the Aragon Ballroom on his first solo tour, and I thank him for the great show. He replied no thank you for being here!! Not only one of the greatest singers in rock history, but also a great person. RIP Ronnie!!
Ronnie James Dio was magical. One of a kind.
The guitar solo is actually cut down in this version. It's also so cool that it ends on the *second* in stead of the root!
and to think what Campbell has been doing since then....
Great catch I noticed that too!!
I think it's also misaligned (after the cut) so it kinda jumps. They also cut-off my favourite part of the solo- the palm muting part. Meh
The second is the 5 of the 5 which makes it harmonize well with the resolution. Great trick in blues too.
The whole guitar solo is great but the first half is the most interesting part -- it almost feels like he's solo into a different song. Of course, that's the part they cut short.
One of THE voices of rock.
He had power, control and kept you engaged every time he opened his mouth.
Small in stature but an absolute vocal giant.
🤘🤘
RJD was proof that dynamite comes in small packages.
Check out "one night in the city" no one has reviewed it. B-side track, awesome work by RJD.
Dio's voice is so great......not many singers can take you through a story. He sings so effortlessly causing good vocalists to ask how the hell does he do it? He is truly a legendary performer
Listening to Dio Live is another level in his talent, check out his live performance in Rainbow from the Live 1977 Munich concert. The songs "Mistreated" and "Catch the Rainbow" are fantastic.
yeah, he mightve just outdone david coverdale on his own song.
absolutely surpassed it by far
My personal opinion is that concert is one of the best performances he ever did and I love his version of mistreated. Every song is written for a certain performer but not always by that performer. Mistreated is one of them, Richie Blackmore didn't know it but he wrote it for Dio, some story with hurt it was written by Trent Reznor but he didn't know he was writing it for Johnny Cash.
@@shadybrain3424 Coverdale is good but competing with Dio is almost not fair for any singer, i love the live version with Coverdale in Deep purple from the Live in London album myself though,.
many would argue, that David's bluesy and raw tone fits the song more. One of those peeps is my father for example. I like both equally.@@leandrodozo2214
I've noticed some of metal's greatest singers all emphasize words When going into a scream. Dio , Geoff Tate , Rob Halford & Bruce Dickinson all do it
I’m glad I was on the Earth the same time as RJD 🤘He is definitely the 🐐 of Metal singers
An incredible vocalist, and by all accounts a great human. Rip \,,/
One of the all time great vocalists….ever!
That incredible guitar solo, unfortunately, was cut a little short because of the music video length.
It's great to see that mighty Dio has grown on you, too 😇 Great reaction as always!
So excited that you're doing more Dio! I would highly recommend "Rainbow In the Dark", which is off the same album as "Holy Diver".
You should react to him live! He can be even more impressive!
I can't believe I never knew there was an actual music video for this 🤯. Thanks for sharing and your reaction.
Dio videos were rare on MTV. Last in Line was my favorite Dio video.
Dio also released a VHS back in 1990 I think called "Time Machine" that included all music videos from his solo band up until Wild One
@@FloosWorld_AoE I forgot all about that. I actually have that packed away
Vivian Campbell is a beast of a guitar player. Shame he and Dio fell out as that combination led to so much great melodic heavy metal.
Viv wasn't the only musician screwed by Wendy Dio... You can say the same about Sharon Osbourne...🤓
Yeah i coulda done well with another album or two. Viv was on Fire, he wrote one of the most perfect solos of the era, even though i was a bit more of a Jake E Lee guy, Viv was undeniable. I don;t know about anyone else but it was kinda almost in my head a war between them personally. What i would say it that Jake was a more futuristic, layered, with a really sick mix of styles and nuance. I always hated FX, but Ultimate Sin is one of the best uses of them of that era.
It seems that Dio emphasizes the words that we would if we were telling a story in a normal conversation, and that really changes the feelings the song gives.
Love watching you analyze music. You’re intelligent, detailed, knowledgable. You catch not only technique, tone, breathing, but also emotional delivery. Love your depth. Plus you’re easy on the eyes; so what more could a music nerd like me ask for? Great vids.
Vivian Campbell was very respected as a guitar player for his work on Dio's first two albums. While shredding was becoming the thing in hard rock and rock music, Campbell (who could shred when he wanted to), kept to more melodic guitar work. He later joined Whitesnake in the late 1980s as one of the two guitarists to replace the legendary John Sykes.
Dio's upper range is absolutely beautiful. But never lacking power. And he just made it seem so effortless.
Dio was such an amazing vocalist and from all the interviews I had seen from different people he was an all-around good person. HE would go out of his way for his fans. It is mind blowing that he had very little vocal training. One of his best vocal performances was the song Mistreated by Rainbow, the live version from 1977 in Munich.🤘
In addition to the trumpet, Dio also played the bass from an early age - and very well too - which is obviously a great way to get that sense of rhythm you mentioned.
He also played Keyboards in the Holy River album...🤓 But the band didn't want him to play Keyboards and sing on stage, so they recruited Claude Schnell...
Great reaction! Song recommendations: Black Sabbath - Neon Knights and Heaven and Hell. These two songs are off the first record Black Sabbath did with Dio, after Black Sabbath fired Ozzy Osbourne in 1979. The album is also titled Heaven and Hell (1980) and the title track is awesome! I would suggest listening to the album versions of both songs first, then doing live later if you want. There are some great live performances, but I still think recorded version is best :) Thanks Julia! You rock!!
I concur.
Heaven and hell is both a great album (which is in my personal vinyl collection) and a great band
I was in jr high when Dio went solo, and he blew all of us kids away. Having grown up on him, I can tell you he was a genuine human being. Loved his fans, made time for them ALWAYS. I miss that man like a family member.
🤘
Killswitch engage, and specifically howard jones did a killer cover and definitely did it justice.
I've been waiting like what seemed forever but was worth the wait. Thank You Julia. Just one request.. please more DIO reactions. He is the G O A T🤘🤘🤘🤘
Love that you liked Vivian´s solo! He is totally unique too, in his playing. Great reaction, thank you! 🙂You rock!😍
Yeah, but the solo is cut and the song here suffers very much. I think it's also misaligned so it kinda jumps. They also cut-off my favourite part of the solo- the palm muting part. Meh
@@andrejz8954 Yes! Love his palm muting...and way of playing! Back then, when the vinyl came out, I didn´t react much - but through the years I have "discovered" how much I appreciate him! As a guitarplayer myself I realize how cool this is, to have your own style! Cheers mate!
Yeah that adlib at the end in insane. Just like it's nothing. It's like wait, I didn't get to really play yet!
Mistreated live in Munich, Catch the Rainbow from the same concert and Heaven and Hell are bombs. The first one probably the most powerful he ever did. 🤘
I hope you catch some of his Black Sabbath performances, for me they were his finest moments. I was lucky enough to see him 3 times with them.
BTW you look amazing in the thumbnail.
I'm feeling envy, sorry. 😂 I wish i could have this opportunity!
Ronnie grew up about two hours from where I live in Upstate NY. They town he grew up in, Cortland NY, named a street after him. It is called Dio Way.
I was 11 when this album came out. My best friend's uncle was visiting from Texas and he turned us on to this album. I fell in love with Dio's voice immediately and I still think he's the best male vocalist ever. He is the male version of Doro Pesch (who I think is the best female vocalist ever).
I love Dio! He was a master at bringing life to a song. I saw Dio with Sabbath and also saw him solo and both times he brought live what he produced in the studio. He as Meat Loaf would bring a song to life and draw you in. Dio was a trumpet player and he stated that is probably why he has such incredible breath control. We have lost both and they are both missed.
Highly recommend some live tracks: Children of the Sea from '83, Heaven and Hell from '86. Also does a great version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
One of the most, if not the most iconic voices regardless of genre. The man was born to sing. What is amazing, at least to me, is that he never took vocal lessons. He started playing classical trumpet and that's how he learned breathing techniques. I have been fortunate to see him live many times, from Rainbow to Black Sabbath, and when he went solo. He is honestly more impressive live than studio. Watching/listening to him sing is like storytime. He just captivates you.
YES!!! I love the harmony part, which is the part I usually sing along with. 💪🏽🤩😍
This is one that one crank up as the fade happens because of the BRILLIANCE.
”Rainbow Eyes” is one of my all time favorite songs by Rainbow and Dio. My first Rainbow album was Long Live Rock 'n' Roll back in 1978. I quickly picked up the first two albums. I have also picked up his albums from Elf. RJD is a genre unto himself.
I wish someone like Julia reacted to Swords in the Wind, live in Mexico. Here's Eric Adams, a singer that is effectively Dio's contemporary still singing a song that spans 3 octaves and is so full of storytelling, it's past time one of the best reactors tried something that shows what he's worth!
My boss met him when he worked at a KMart, before Dio's first solo show. I looked it up, and I had never heard of the venue. It is only about 15 miles away, and I have gone to over a hundred concerts. Like KMart, the venue doesn't exist anymore. I saw him in an arena on his next tour.
Fun fact. The bass and backing vocals are by the excellent Jimmy Bain. Jimmy was also the bassist and did the BV's in Stargazer.
When Ronnie and Jimmy played together, Ronnie was always exceptional as was Jimmy. Jimmy was a lead singer in his own right in the band Wild horses.
You should check out Dio live from the Philadelphia Spectrum 1984 The Last in Line. Dio at his very best.
Long live the immortal Dio, simply one of heavy metal’s vocal warriors.
You need to find a track by the band Elf. It is a blues band that Dio fronted before he transitioned to a more metal sound. His vocals were so epic.
ua-cam.com/video/d4LoQxYX2GY/v-deo.htmlsi=XLpMmiDsaDWmZeWk
RJD covering War Pigs with Elf (live) is amazing ( audio only).
there's a great video of dio with the tenacious d guys in the studio recording parts for pick of destiny. very worth watching imo.
While you liked the guitar solo it was cut short by quite a few notes which in my opinion adds texture to the rest of the solo. I know it’s only probably 2 or 3 seconds but it really does make a difference. Great seeing again my fellow redhead 🤘🏻💥🔥🙏🏻💯
He builds up the ideas that lead to the end. They totally kneecapped his expressiveness by cutting it short.
There is a stripped down, vocals only video of this on UA-cam. It really shows off his mind-blowing abilities.
I highly recommend Heaven and Hell, Sign of the Southern Cross, Catch the Rainbow, and Mistreated. Falling of the Edge of the World is amazing too.
I had the Honor of seeing Ronnie James Dio live in concert back in 1998. He and his band did not have another gig for two days. We were so loud and enthusiastic, that He kept playing on! A two and a half hour show went four almost five!
I personally think Rainbow / On Stage contains his best vocals.
If you like him you should watch the Live in Munich footage. It's legendary.
Listening to you talk about range and it made me think you need to check out the band Boston (look for 1976 and 79 videos) and their lead Brad Delp's vocal range. For whatever reason Brad gets overlooked in a lot of conversations when it comes to vocalists and he's a guy I often hear folks say how did I forget or miss him when naming best vocalists.
We all know Dio is a phenomenal singer...but I love that you talk about his choices in emphasis and story telling; that part gets overlooked in many of these reactions. It is easy to get lost in and concentrate on how well he sings, but you dive deeper and I love it! Keep up the great work!
one of the best vocalists to ever walk this planet ! Ronnie James Dio was so good his live performances even in his last year before he died he blew everybody away at graspop that year with how good n clear his voice was + his insanely high pitch vocals he pulled out to enter the stage were incredible.
His effortlessness is why Brittney Slays from Unleash the Archers reminds me of Dio. His range and articulation are next level. Also, now that you’ve reacted to this, please react to the Killswitch Engage cover 🥹 it’s one of the best covers ever, and Howard absolutely nailed it.
Best music video ever.
Holy diver! Looking forward to this!
Ronnie wasn't only a master of his craft. When you can't find *anyone* to say a bad word about him, but have an endless amount of accounts of fans who he was very friendly and respectful to and even made an effort to remember their names, you have a winner at being a good human being on your hands. Level: expert.
Granted, what he wasn't particularly good at was music videos, but nobody's perfect, not even Ronnie. ^^
Cough... Vivian Campbell... Cough
@@fronthorse Fair point. Okay, ALMOST anyone. ^^ (Although I think Vivian had a bigger problem with Wendy than with Ronnie. Without her, things might've gone down differently.)
An ex used to sing that song to me as “Holy Diaper” because my ass is big. Oh the memories..
Hohoho 😂
I wonder if Julia Nilon ever heard Roger Glover and Guests - Love is All (1974). It was a project by ex-Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover, and Ronnie James Dio did the lead vocals on this song. It was a hit in Netherlands and Belgium, probably also because of the animated cartoon with a singing frog.
This is a great song and there are many more in his catalog, but i am still waiting to see someone react to his early doowop stuff.
Love the channel! I know everyone has mentioned it already but the K switch cover of this is amazing. Gotta listen to that.
Rainbow in the Dark, Last in Line, and Man on the silver mountain are must listen tracks
His scream at the start of Mob Rules from the show at Radio City Music Hall... is out of this world.
12:14He sings the vowel "i" here in chest voice, the vowel is completely open and so it can't be in the nasal cavity, his tongue still seems low to me too but I loved this excellent analysis even more.
Please please please react to Dio's vocals in the 1974 "Love Is All" video. Its a very early look into Dio's earlier vocal style and is also impressive, and there is a faily recent live version of him singing it with The London Symphony Orchestra. Doing them both back to back would be awesome =)
There is no arguing about how good a singer he was, is and will be, but he is also a great storyteller. Every song is a micro-story and he is the dungeon master. There is only one other person capable of such magic (that i can remember) and that is Bruce Dickinson. 🤘🤘🎄🍺
Nice reaction thanks, I am looking forward to watching you discover more of dio
Man On The Silver Mountain '87 Donnington
Children Of The Sea '83 Live
The two greatest vocal performances I've heard.
Nothing can beat the original, but the cover by Killswitch Engage is by far the best cover of all time. A great homage to Dio and this music video.
I've not only been listening to RJD since i was 11 yo, but i even named one of my cars "Ronnie James." He is not just a legend, he was a story teller, an innovator, an inspiration and truly one of the most genuine and nicest guys ever. I remember when he put together Hear N Aid, the singers that worked with him on Stars were not only in awe of him, so many of them took away vocal tips and tricks that he shared. And these were very well established, famous singers in their own rights. He is a legend among legends and it makes me so incredibly happy to see his legacy continue to be enjoyed and appreciated 🤘😝🤘
Dios vocal skills were so good he used his own mic for recording vocals because he was little man with a big and powerful voice
Julia you are incredible and your use of vocabulary is so beautiful on describing your view on this subject.
now you need to listen to the cover of killswitch engage holy diver
it's been a pleasure to find someone who's able to combine a genuine enthusiasm for the music, the broad technical knowledge to analyse and interpret it with such confidence, AND the talent for pedagogy in order to convey that insight in a conversational way to the layperson. And you're a fellow Aussie!
Definitely going to be following the channel in future, glad you're enjoying Dio. The only classic metal vocalist I can think of to match him (and who seems surprisingly overlooked for this kind of breakdown) is Eric Adams of Manowar. Another immense natural talent with operatic leanings and incredible expressiveness to match the range and power. "Blood of My Enemies" is an all-timer vocal performance, as are "Power of Thy Sword" and "Revelation". Trust me 😎
just seen your video with The Charismatic Voice (great video by the way) and just subscribed and just in time for more Dio.
I really feel envious of the amount of good music you haven't heard yet ❤
LOVE. LOVE. Your Analysis Format. Love it.......!!!!
Love your reactions. I especially appreciate your print notes instead of constantly interrupting the song
One of my most favorite Dio songs, been listening to and playing for decades. DIO created some great stuff during his career. RIP Ronnie !!
Saw him live powerhouse vocals great belt and tone and sustain Merry Christmas and happy holidays Julia !
Rainbow in the Dark is Dio's ultimate display of his distorted growl , You'll be very impressed 🤟
There is a video of Julia and the Charismatic voice watching Dio. I think you'll love it!!! Check it out!!! I think they did Stargazer. He is one of my favorites. I was about 12 or 13 at this time. This and The Last In Line really brought me into the whole gig. Julia...You are gold in this reaction while breaking it down. Great reaction! Respect and love!!! 🤟🍻
No one is reacting to the band he had before Rainbow, called Elf. On the first Elf album Ronnie does lead vocals and bass. One of his best vocal songs is on the self titled album Elf, called Never More. Check it out! You will be blown away! 🙂 Roger Glover the bass player for Deep Purple produced the album. And on the first Rainbow album all the members of Elf except the guitarist, played on that album Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow.
You really should check out Dio singing live, it really was his element, especially the live videos from when he was in his prime in the 70´s and 80´s. Some great examples: Rainbow - live in Munich 1977, everything is great in that video but the songs Catch the rainbow and Mistreated are great examples. Black Sabbath - Heaven and hell - Live 1980, Dio - Don't Talk To Strangers -Live At The Spectrum 1986.
So glad to see you do some more Dio! I really hope you'll get to the live version of Rainbow in the Dark-it makes me cry every time. The live version from London in 2005 is a great example of how well his voice aged as well as a really emotional performance.
Now that you've seen the original you have to check out a couple of the amazing covers of this song, the one by Killswitch Engage, and the one by Liliac, a band made entirely of siblings with a very unique sounding singer.
Some legendary Dio performances are the studio versions of children of the sea and heaven and hell from the Black Sabbath album "Heaven and Hell" last in line with the Dio band is another stand out.
Merry Christmas Julia. Another great review as always.
You'll enjoy reacting to Rainbow - Live in Munich 1977, it's an awesome live performance, I won't give spoilers but you'll enjoy hearing this
Vivian Campbell 🎸 who now is in Def Leppard...His work with Dio on the first two albums is excellent. Vinnie Appice 🥁 who played with Ronnie in Black Sabbath.. Have you heard Dio's vocals in Rainbow?
Yes, more examples! Happy New Year, Julia!
If you want hear more from Dio when he is doing both then listen to Heaven and Hell live vrom London when he was singing for Heaven and Hell (Black Sabbath). The live version from a couple of years ago is amazing.
Thank you for this Julia ❤ I think this song is not the best introduction to RJD. It may be the most popular though.
You have already heard Stargazer but there is more 😊
Sign of the southern cross, Children of the sea and Bible Black for example.
In my opinion, there are two songs to react to after this:
- Holy Diver as performed by Killswitch Engage
- Thunderhorse by Dethklok, animated death metal band with a music video playing tribute to this one while also being hilariously dark.
holy diver was the part of my first music purchase i still have the cassette
Loved the jump scare at the start!
I'm making myself a playlist of just Dio songs and have over 200 in it but I keep finding more from him and they're all bangers. I just recently discovered his songs from "Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast" from 1974 and "Seeds of Change" from 1980 and They're really great especially "Love is All" and "Mask of the Great Deceiver". I got 226 songs and haven't even gotten to the live albums yet.
My late wife's favourite Dio song - I can still hear her in my memories just randomly bursting out with a "Shiny diamonds!" on sight of anything Dio related
