Both breeds are wonderful dogs just depends on your lifestyle, home environment & what you’re looking for. Our Goldens were all Velcro dogs 😂 (super affectionate, energetic & playful). Our Pyrs were/are both more independent/stubborn, vocal, intelligent, loyal, & very loving. 4 of our 5 dogs have been pure breeds from rescues. There are tons of Pyrs out there in shelters/rescues in need of a home!
I learn more about my pup every day. They love to work, weather training or in with goats. He loves being with me in house but also enjoys wandering my 50 acre pasture.
I adopted a Great Pyrenees he used to live outside alone now we live together in a small apartment and I am a student. he is the sweetest and cutest ever. He doesn’t know how big he is. @JayG Well first, it's sarcasm. Second, seems your family doesn't know how the Pyr/Flock thing is supposed to work. The Pyrs should be with the animals, to freely mingle and protect. @@anthonyarnold906 no they like attention but they're super independent. They don't mind. Where I live they stay in the fields for whole days with the sheep. Usually there's a few of them around.
I adopted a 6-9 months old 40lb GP/mix from a shelter. She is now 95lbs, all white beautiful, very aggressive when there is a delivery ,will lounge at loud cars going by or anything moving fast. So I can’t walk on a trail/street were there are joggers or bikers. She is great with other dogs, loves and melts over kids, eats very little, barks a lot, not as obedient as other dogs , learns very easily but will check to see if I have a treat before she obeys. Overall a great dog
i keep telling my friend who has a dog that is half pyranees she's gonna get huge... about 6-9 months and already 48 lbs.... slowly gets large.. How long did it take for yours to get 95?
My GP lives in a small house with a small yard but I take him for at least two walks a day and at least a bit weekly trip to the dog park and he's fine. When he isn't walking with me or playing he is sleeping. Seriously he sleeps like 16 hours a day.
Just adopted my first puppy as an young adult man in my 20s and he’s a beautiful Pyrenees mix. He’s the chillest sweetheart of a dog ever, so quiet and goofy and relaxed. Rarely cries or barks compared to a lot of other dogs and puppies I’ve known or heard about.
What is he mixed with? A few years back my dad had a female pitbull and a male pyrenees, they mated and had a litter of 13 of the weirdest looking pups I’ve ever seen! Big, long, pink & white cylindrical snout, huge paws, swirly, soft, and short hair, floppy ears, saggy skin, great temperament. Awesome dogs.
I adopted a Pyr puppy who will eventually take the place of a wonderful German Shepherd-Golden Retriever-Wolf who would tour my fenced acre and a quarter and keep my rescues (I do small dog rescue) safe from coyotes. The puppy has already impressed me with her calm demeanor and her willingness to adapt to the life I have chosen for her. She will always be outdoors when the small dogs are in the yard but, never kept outdoors alone...
I love my Great Pyrenees, Bella. She loves my kid and watches out for him as well as our house. I don't have a problem with her shedding. She sheds once a year at the beginning of summer. Her fur is like hair. I feed her by hand at times and she has such a soft mouth and gently takes what is presented to her. Bella is an independent thinker that is for sure, some call it stubbornness but I say she thinks for herself...lol
I would love to see your thoughts on hike/backpacking and camping dogs. Maybe your top ten. Maybe dog that is good with goats, likes to hike and would be good to have off leach while on the trail with people passing by. Just would be a different video. But packing is what I do.
On my second pyr…my old man passed away last November at 14…..then another rescue popped up just as I was finishing mourning, my old friend….Duke is 2 lotsa puppy still…but coming into his own
I got my pyr at 18 months from a family that couldn’t keep him. He’s the best dog I’ve ever had. They had crate trained him and I don’t know if that is why he’s so good but he minds better than any of my previous dogs and walking him is a joy because he loves all people and dogs that he meets. He is a protector though while being a gentle giant. I love this dog so much. Fur everywhere and some slobber, yes. Barky at times, yes. Still best dog ever.
I have Pyrs, they are AMAZING with kids. When not guarding the chickens or goats they are at the kids heels never losing sight. They can seem to have a stubborness, but they aren't like labs that need constant affirmation. They know what they need to do and don't like to be bothered while doing it.
I got one of these dogs she is a great dog and is very protective of me and my family and our livestock, but she acts lazy but in time of action she will do anything to protect
I rescued my boy from a farm at eight months. He was not a fan of the chicken coop or outdoor life. Very unhappy! He is now happy as a camper going in and out of the house at his will. Nocturnal is the truth! And he LOVES tearing apart boxes. Every Amazon box becomes his favorite toy. He loves a 30 minute walk each day. What a total joy! Won’t leave my side!
I have a 2 year old boy and live in an apartment. He is the best boy ever, snuggle bug and a protector so I sleep soundly at night. I will never own another breed
I have one, and he's truly a handful. I definitely would not recommend them for new owners. They're very stubborn and they shed WAY too much, but I love mine.
I can agree with your opinion however, I have had 14 at a time, guarding my goats. Mine were easy to care for and when they shed their coats, it came off almost in one piece except for their back legs and tails.
we adopted one 1 year ago today. we owned 2 saints ( not at the same time). as for the shedding if you keep up with it it id ok. the saints shed more. the stubborn is accurate but they are sensitive dogs and while independent he wants our approval. he is sweet, smart, calm and good company. very visual and very aware and alert to his surroundings. he is great company and we love our 2 year old family pet.
I have a Great Pyrenees Boxer mix. She is SO stubborn. But so friendly, she always wants to be outside even in the rain and snow! I offer her to come inside but she always wants to stay. She just lays down and watches my goats and chickens play and watches the ducks in the pond. Sometimes she even takes a little swim. Can you make a Boxer breed review? I would love to learn more about her other half. Also do you know how big she will get? She is almost 10 months old and already 60 pounds! Will she keep growing?
We have a female and she is wonderful. Definitely a great watch dog and very good with people. Agreed that Pyrenees are probably a sub-optimal choice for a pet if you live in an urban environment. In addition to being large they are also generally long haired dogs and require a certain amount of regular upkeep if you want to keep the shedding under control. As a mountain breed they are also more likely to thrive in cooler climates, or at least ones that aren't hot and humid for most of the year. When not 'on duty' as it were, they tend to be very affectionate and are usually content if they can see one or more members of the family. Pyrenees are not high strung dogs and do not require constant attention. In fact when they are not guarding their flock or family, they can be downright sluggish. Size- males 5 females 4 Loyalty- 5 Affection- 4.5 Maintenance- 3 Suitability as a working dog- 5 Suitability as an indoor pet- 2 Barker- yes Energy level- 2 Aggression level- 2.5 (Definitely defensive around flock or family but much more likely to bark than bite unless it senses an immediate threat.)
Thank you for this video im researching this dog for my almost 5 year old and chickens. A protector is what im looking for but im gunna keep watching videos and reading about them before i choose!
I have one on the farm, he stays outside on his own choice till it's either super cold or a little hot, on his own volition. He's a good boy, he's great with kids and our animals, except chickens will forever be a toy for whatever reason. Easily the best breed for a farmer that just needs a basic guardian and companion around the farm

Best dog breed. I love them. The are worth the hair, barking etc. Best watch dog. Unconditionally love. 😊They live to go where u go. Not a dog to leave at home by itself, unless u have another dog
Great Pyr is one of the best home protection dogs. Lazy, cool, powerful..... But dude,,,, Great Pyr,s are far far over 100 pounds. More like 150 160. My 9 month old puppy is over 100 and in extremely good shape. They continue to grow for 2 and a half years
Do you have recommendations on what food to feed a purebred GP? I’ve heard Royal Canin is a good dog food, but I did see corn as one of the ingredientsAnd feel like that may just be a filler for the food. Hoping to get a few other suggestions before we select one for our GP puppy.
You'll want to watch this trainer - we've had ours 2 1/2 years, and he's pretty up on most of their behavior. Except the brush pile. Left alone, had a wild animal run over the pile the Pyr would have chased it, ours will blast through anything to get where she wants. She knows she's big and not afraid to push through. But, she's also sweet and like in this video, when our son's little mix of 30 lbs snarled at her, she simply laid down as if to ask "what did I do?" ua-cam.com/video/d8gQWsw8vxE/v-deo.html
I'm running 3 on my farm currently in Quitman Texas. Overall theyre a good, safe live stock guardian assuming you find one not mixed, poorly brednwith bad nerves and from a good proven stock. As all Live stock guardians they come preloaded wit their own set of behaviors. Stuff you cant out "train" out of them. Roaming and digging can be a big problem, itll depend on your fencing, and if theyve imprinted to the live stock and property. For example we had close 20 goats make their way of the pen, the male went with them and made no effort of stopping them,, but he also didn't let them wonder off. He was found 10 miles down the road on their own.. the two females stayed behind, and the male went with them.. males like to patrol 0, females will stay within. Males are more independent, females are dependent, males are very stubborn,, females are easier to generally negotiate with. Males are very hard headed. Theyre not man stoppers like other live stock guardians. They'll defend agaisnt preditors, but they also will need to be harned up a hit and somewhat shown how to handle them self agaisnt a potential fight against coyotes. Do not shave them. They have a triple coat that's works well even in summers. I simply trim. Thier our coat is very corse! And it's oily. They will roll around in goat and sheep dung and look absolutely dirty, then a few hours later, they will get whote again. They also love to swim. They'll swim in man made lake we have on our property even in winter. Depending on your land and type of preditors. Don't assume a single Gp will do. I found that 2 females and a male work well. They behave different and offer different perks. I do have my dogs ears tattooed, microshipped and in summers, will wear GPS when their released in the pastures. ALLOW THEM TO BARK! AT NIGHT ITS WORTH THEIR WEIGHT IN GOLD. THIS BARKINGNTHEY DO IS A CALL SIGN TO LET COYOTEES AND STRAY DOGS AND OTHER ANIMALS KNOW WHERE NOT TO COME. I RUN 3 gp for a heard of 300 on about 400macres, but we only used 100 acres at a time. We alternates pastures to prevent worms and give the grass a chance to grow.
What gps system do you use? I'm trying to find one for my coming pyr. Thanks! Btw for anyone reading, what the writer said it's all true. These are wonderful dogs but come with their unique challenges.
@@khioriobi5224 sorry, didn't notice your question. I love and have tried Garmin with great success. I have a Garmin a320. But Amazon doesn't have it online for ever reason. For 3 dogs it cost me close to a 1000. Its expensive. However thr job that my dogs do is valuable to me. Ive invest so much time and money. I can't afford to gave them wonder off or get stolen
And you just said what the Pyrenees Are. GAUDIANS. As their skills are to wander with the flocks where they go. And in Europe. Fencing is usually not a thing. So that is one of the Valuable Skills of the Pyrenees. Your dogs did Good 👍
Can you do a Breed review of the Clumber spaniel, its the heaviest and least known of the spaniels. I love the large jowly looking head. Great hunting dog, love seeing them do barn hunts.
My pyr lives for his family, neighbors, and all animals. He's a couch potato that enjoys an hour of play every day. He is a good guard, but if we approve of someone, he is chill. And he is never nocturnal. I have grinch feet in my face every night.
Great video man. We are about to move onto 20 acres of land in Idaho. I am doing research on a large guard dog for my wife and the chickens and goats we are going to be keeping. I currently have two Australian Shepherds, which are amazing. But I want something bigger as well, as there are mountain lions and bears in the area. I am thinking the Great Pyrenees will be perfect. But I am also open to other suggestions.
Can they be okay in a family home? I love the breed but I don’t have a bunch of land and I’d hate to get one then the dog be miserable because it’d rather be on a ranch with chickens, goats, Etc.
There are a lot of great Pyrenees mixed breeds where I live in Canada. I will easily be able to adopt a German Pyrenees mix or a lab Pyrenees mix. I can't wait
I am obsessed with this breed. Videos don't do this breed justice. I absolutely love both mine. Mine are not from a working line, but they are not less able to do their job. My male absolutely love children. His favorite thing in life is meeting new children. If you are close to neighbors and don't have room for them to patrol, don't get them. They are very very loud. They are also better in pairs.
These dogs are fantastic. Like most working dogs, once they understand what you want and don't want from them, they are ON it. And, once they bond with you, they will die before letting anything happen to you. Yes, they are aggressive with strangers but, they are the sweetest, BIGGEST, cuddle-monsters with their friends and family.
I never knew the loose wiggly dewclaws was a Pyr trait until I saw so many from this video has them! I thought my sweet Pyr Boarder Collie mix was just a little deformed lol he is the sweetest boy and has been very calm since he was a puppy. He definitely is skittish of small children, so hopefully we can get that sorted out and it wont become a problem.
Is it just me or do they notice your camera and drones more than other dogs? Haha. It really feels like they clock the camera and make eye contact often. Amazing dogs.
I'd love to have the Great Pyrenees! Ever since I discovered them a few years ago I've loved them! My only issue would be if I were in an apartment, because as you said it couldn't really go outside. In that case, I'd probably have a Samoyed. I've only ever been able to stroke one in real life, and that's because the owner was super impressed that I identified it as a Pyrenean rather than a Newfie! I'll definitely have to save up as I heard they're expensive, but it'll definitely be worth it!
Whatever breed you decide on check the barking habits. I suspect a pyrenees could cause trouble with the neighbors. They bark if the wind blows, hearing neighbors through the walls could set them off and be really annoying. Trying to break them of the habit means preventing them from doing what they were breed to do and could make them depressed.
I did not make them sound like the same breed. I never mentioned the Pyrenean Mastiff in this video. Pyrenean Mountain Dog is another name for Great Pyrenees.
@@DogumentaryTV I never thought you made them sound the same, but I love to know the difference if you could possibly do another video for the Pyrenean Mastiff I imagine the fans would enjoy the clarification. I'm curious was it the Great Pyrenees or the Pyrenean Mastiff that was used to breed the Dogo Argentino.
And they love to bark! An important trait that needs to be considered when owning one. It has been said that they bark sometimes almost nonstop as a kind of a warning to any would be predator. Even those that live in the suburbs will do this.
** Question** : I'm single and a first time dog owner. My house has a large backyard and I have plenty of time to be around and spend time with whatever dog I decide to get. I found a Great Pyrenees and Lab mix. Is this a good first time dog? Thank you
Pyrs are really independent and love to protect their property and family ( livestock, children, other house pets etc) They are good dogs but dont expect one to do all the regular dog tricks. They can learn them but they wont do them on command lol A big back yard might not be enough to keep a pyr or pyr cross from becoming bored or depressed as they have an instinct to guard. We take our big girl on hikes, long walks and car rides and give her opportunities to protect and guard us. As a first time dog owner you might want to try a lab or golden. Much easier dogs. Pyrs are wonderful but they have a mind of their own. They will run off and make the whole neighborhood theirs to guard. They also bark a lot as it's their duty is to guard and you will never and shouldn't try to convince them otherwise. They can also be aggressive towards other animals especially dogs that are not part of their pack as they are bred to chase off or even kill wolves, coyotes and other predators.
Hi documentary TV I am a regular viewer of your document about dog breed really nice 👌💓.... I suggest Indian native and unique breed name: "Rajapalyam" Dog breed please make a video
Do a video about which historic and fairly young apbt bloodline is the best as far as gameness and drive. Do so by seeing the bloodlines of the Apbts’ who win the most and perform the best in sporting competition’s such as weight pulling, jumping, and even hog hunting. It’s a big project but you’re the best so I know you could come up with something lol thanks.
i have 3 months old great pyr, male. he is a big puppy and likes to play and snap biting. im a little worried. but he is a smart and good dog. he learns quickly and very patience. i live in a sub and a decent (not big) backyard. he always wants to go out and lay down on the grass. any advice? can he be a house pet? can he outgrow being a farm dog?
I was told they wouldn't do well in a house because they will want to work, not true. Our girl sees our kids as her livestock and loves nothing more than hanging out with them inside or outside. She isn't bored or anxious, she's a potato with a permanent smile on her face. Her parents were strictly working dogs and still are.
I live in an apartment in Columbia Falls, MT, about 20 minutes away from Glacier National Park. I like hiking and backpacking and am looking for a large, robust companion for the trails. I am looking for something with the size and temperament to take care of itself if animals wonder into our campsites (I know proper food storage helps but have personal experience waking up next to black bears...and I do mean next to....). Something robust that can take temperature extremes of mountains where weather can change in minutes, with the energy to keep up and meander close by off leash. I am not looking for something extremely higher energy or for something that is going to be constantly trying to outsmart me, like a German Shepard. I am strongly considering the Pyrenees and the Kangal...
I have an Australian shepherd Great Pyrenees mix. A guy who was breeding both accidentally had a mix litter so sent them to the shelter only a few weeks after birth. I adopted mine at exactly 2 months old. She is 4 months old now and weighs 50 pounds. She is almost as tall as my full grown American bull dog. Is that enough for your dog ? Not having an emotional connection with what he is protecting ? I’m just curious not trying to ruffle feathers
😂😂👍👌🤙
@@anthonyarnold906 no they like attention but they're super independent. They don't mind. Where I live they stay in the fields for whole days with the sheep. Usually there's a few of them around.
Anthony Arnold he’s got three other dogs as his companions they be chilling bro we light it up i’m on the property all day and live on the property

@@rachelm9350 she reached 95 around age 3. She is 11 now
1:41 That face! ♥️
Finally u switch it up! Love the PYR
These dogs don’t have to work they are happy as pets I love this breed love my baby girl
Physically beautiful and spiritually beautiful dogs
I love my Great Pyrenees, Bella. She loves my kid and watches out for him as well as our house. I don't have a problem with her shedding. She sheds once a year at the beginning of summer. Her fur is like hair. I feed her by hand at times and she has such a soft mouth and gently takes what is presented to her.
Bella is an independent thinker that is for sure, some call it stubbornness but I say she thinks for herself...lol
Zeke that subtle music loaded with info another classic amigo! Cheers 🍻
I ❤️My Great Prynese ! He is so Sweet , Loyal ,& Funny 💙🐶💙
I would love to see your thoughts on hike/backpacking and camping dogs. Maybe your top ten. Maybe dog that is good with goats, likes to hike and would be good to have off leach while on the trail with people passing by. Just would be a different video. But packing is what I do.
Pyrs have a tendency to roam. I hike with mine but I use a pretty long lead.
mine is impossible to leash train, but she gets tired eventually on hikes and stays on the trail
On my second pyr…my old man passed away last November at 14…..then another rescue popped up just as I was finishing mourning, my old friend….Duke is 2 lotsa puppy still…but coming into his own
I love these dogs! I am planning to get 2 to protect my horses and other animals at my home!
Perfect review of this breed! Thanks!
I got one I'm still learning he is so lovable
I just got one too! His channel is called cloud the great Pyrenees
"Hardcore working abilities" aka literally killing the mailman.
I love my pyr so much that I watch videos of other pyrs. He guards goats, chickens and humans.
I love mine, they are the easiest to take for a walk heck it feels like I'm walking by myself
Size- males 5 females 4
Loyalty- 5
Affection- 4.5
Maintenance- 3
Suitability as a working dog- 5
Suitability as an indoor pet- 2

Thank you for this video im researching this dog for my almost 5 year old and chickens. A protector is what im looking for but im gunna keep watching videos and reading about them before i choose!
I love that the great pyrenees has double dewclaws. It's so unique.
There was a cartoon bk in the late 80’s early 90’s with dog. It was like the French Lassi
My Best friend is ness...Ness is a great Pyrenees mix in south france..i meet him every year on his Farm ,love him ..great Dog ,,Nature he lives by his owner on a Great area...Love him so much..he dont like Cats and Boars:-) but hes calm and hes with me when i meet him...on septmeber i see him,,and my Heart is full of Love Great Kanel
They continue to grow for 2 and a half years
Thank you for your educational video. Even though i will never be privileged enough to own a pyrenees, its fun to be educated.

Hell yeah man, love the videos, high quality! Great info! i have a GP/Husky mix she is a trip. lol keep it up. Be well!
Do you have recommendations on what food to feed a purebred GP?
I’ve heard Royal Canin is a good dog food, but I did see corn as one of the ingredientsAnd feel like that may just be a filler for the food. Hoping to get a few other suggestions before we select one for our GP puppy.
I'm watching this post 👀
I feed mine a mostly fresh/raw diet but when I do include kibble its the Gentle Giant Canine.
i pick up my pup in 3 weeks, what good timing
How's it going now?
You'll want to watch this trainer - we've had ours 2 1/2 years, and he's pretty up on most of their behavior. Except the brush pile. Left alone, had a wild animal run over the pile the Pyr would have chased it, ours will blast through anything to get where she wants. She knows she's big and not afraid to push through. But, she's also sweet and like in this video, when our son's little mix of 30 lbs snarled at her, she simply laid down as if to ask "what did I do?" ua-cam.com/video/d8gQWsw8vxE/v-deo.html
Any chance you have a komondor video coming?? Love all the content so far!!
The dog in the video has eye infection. Please kindly give him/her treatment. Thanks
Your dogs did Good 👍
Yessir well said
Can you do a Breed review of the Clumber spaniel, its the heaviest and least known of the spaniels. I love the large jowly looking head. Great hunting dog, love seeing them do barn hunts.
Well this is my life having a great Parnes
A great what lol?
i think it’s also worth mentioning that many show breeders also get working titles in addition to show titles
My pyr lives for his family, neighbors, and all animals. He's a couch potato that enjoys an hour of play every day. He is a good guard, but if we approve of someone, he is chill. And he is never nocturnal. I have grinch feet in my face every night.
Great Video! It was so relaxing that I smoke my CBD Right know. Have a nice one.
Which song from the service did you use for this? I want to make a donation to the artist
You forgot the natural nocturnal nature and the BARKING. These dogs are bred to be up all night, and bark at ANY preceived threat.
Is there any small version of pyr... Plz mention
Is it just me or do they notice your camera and drones more than other dogs? Haha. It really feels like they clock the camera and make eye contact often. Amazing dogs.
Yes they have a really sharp eye. Mine protect our chickens from hawks. They can spot them anywhere
@@carlam4986 I didn't know that! Thank you very much for the advice! I can't imagine that Pyrenean would be suited to city life.
@@epicdjyoshi648 Please don't get a Pyr if you live in an apartment, they will bark- very loud. It's no joke that they're bred to guard.
@@dombsky Don't worry I absolutely will not get a Pyrenean if I have an apartment. I know they need a lot more space to roam.
Try rescue. They're low energy. They only need a couple of long walks daily. I live in a townhouse and do the walks.
I wish to have Great Pyrenee one of these days. But right now I can’t due to small backyard and my Senior Lab white dog don’t have much longer to live
4:45 what does he say, He says "Your home, your family will come ....?" to WHAT? I cannot understand what he said, please let me know.
Can you discuss the difference between the Great Pyrenees and the Pyrenean Mastiff?
YES! 2 different breeds, but he made it sound like the same breed. He should clarify.
I pick up my puppy tomorrow. :)
My pyrenees is happily lazy in my one bedroom apartment 😂
Yikes man, he must give everyone in the flat hell with the barking at night. Or. Maybe you scored with great luck and got a silent Pyr. One of a kind.
It reminds me of Belle and Sebastian
And they love to bark! An important trait that needs to be considered when owning one. It has been said that they bark sometimes almost nonstop as a kind of a warning to any would be predator. Even those that live in the suburbs will do this.
** Question** : I'm single and a first time dog owner. My house has a large backyard and I have plenty of time to be around and spend time with whatever dog I decide to get. I found a Great Pyrenees and Lab mix. Is this a good first time dog? Thank you
Pyrs are really independent and love to protect their property and family ( livestock, children, other house pets etc)
They are good dogs but dont expect one to do all the regular dog tricks. They can learn them but they wont do them on command lol
A big back yard might not be enough to keep a pyr or pyr cross from becoming bored or depressed as they have an instinct to guard.
Great video love your work these dogs love children my 10 week old female saved my daughter from a snake last weekend
Great explanation of this dog review

Zek.. have you done a documentary on the Blue Lacy?? I thought I had seen one before on your channel
Do we get them only in white fur?
HIGHLY interestd in you doing a Maremma
much respect to ya dude
Great Pyrenees are extremely smart and STUBBORN as someone else said in the comments my dog checks if I have treats for him before he will listen.
I WISHD ID HAD DOG LIKE THAT
Our pyrenees is a 150lbs lap dog!!! Best dog breed ever!!!!!
I love the personality of my Pyrenees shepherd mix but was curious if anyone had a guess to as big she will grow to?
Hi, can you do a video on the Miniature Schnauzer? (undocked and uncropped please)
My Leo is my dog soulmate!
Background noise is really distracting.
