We live in the country and people think that it's okay to drop off their dogs when they don't want them anymore. Last summer a man in a big white Denali dropped off the most beautiful Kangal. She chased the car for miles. Our neighbor saw it, and told us about it. We already had 4 dogs, but figured we could find a rescue for her. She finally just walked on to our property one evening after we had spent hours looking for her. She had been on her own for 15 days and was really skinny. She is the best dog we have ever had. So sweet! It has taken her a long time to trust but she is finally warming up to us. I would have paid thousands for this amazing dog. We adore her.
Same story! Someone dumped a beautiful white kangle on our doorstep. She was malnourished. And badly mistreated! She still has nightmares. She trusted my wife at first. But not me. That tells me a man beat her! If I tried to touch her, she flinched. I won her over with patience and love. She greets me when I come home. Jumps up on her hind legs and puts her pawpaws on my shoulders. She plays with me and gets hugs. She has a forever home!
My friend has a kangal here in the UK, he's 14yr old still incredibly athletic, once he gets to know you and accepts you he's fine but not many have made it onto his 'herd list'. He's fantastic with kids, calm, vigilant, protective, never really switches off, a majestic intelligent dog who I always feel looks through you, a wiser dog I've yet to find. Truly a remarkable breed.

For those considering purchasing a Kangal for use on a small hobby farm or small homestead, please consider the following. Kangals have spent millennia being culled for open range predator protection by nomadic herding cultures where the flock migrates throughout the season. The dogs are not genetically coded to stay stationary, in a very small area comparitively speaking. Kangals are well known for large patrol areas on the outside of your livestock. There are exceptions but this breed seeks out predators to displace in ever widening circles depending on terrain and predator density. There are inside the flock type dogs that remain in the flock, perimeter dogs that work the edges of the flock out to a quarter mile or so, and roamers rangers that have wide patrol areas outside of the flock displacing predators up to five miles out. In my experience the Kangal most often is in the roamer ranger group. LGD'S are bred to be canine agressive to varying degrees as the PRIMARY PREDATORS ARE CANINES. If you are in an area where dogs pass by your property you are going to have problems. If you fail to contain your dog and it goes onto other people's property it may end up getting shot, or you may end up in court. Research your breeds, observe the parents, their previous offspring, SPEND TIME learning what breed is more suitable for your environment. You will save a lot of trouble for both yourself and the dog.
Kangals know neighbours, they will know the whole willage better than you, and also they will know whos a good and bad person for you too. these dogs are extremely special creatures
Excellent post it's true that many people don't take the millennia old genetic behavioural programming in these protection breeds. I personally wouldn't have a kangal without animals to protect and at least ten acres to patrol. Whilst some may adapt to a domestic life today they are not to be bred from unless the genetic printing is preserved. This can only really be done by keeping the breed doing as authentic a job as possible daily or the instincts to guard will fade in just a few generations.. Great post again..

they breed the Kangal in this color so they blend in better with the sheep so predators have a harder time to detect the entire number of them resulting in a disadvantage for the predator.
This is by far the best Kangal video I've seen and I've seen lots of them, being a big fan of the dogs. Ms. Hansen and Mr. Guilfoil are raising and training their dogs in basically the same way as sheepherders all over the world have for thousands of years. They're doing all the right things for their dogs. I would love to have one of these incredible dogs but, living in the city with no acreage, it wouldn't be fair to the dog. So I have to be content with my rescued pit bulls.
Wow Zeke, this one really stands apart. I'm blown away by how you raise your own bar for quality of these videos. Refinement by leaps and bounds since I've been watching. I was really hoping you'd do a long distance trip. You should reach out to some sled dog breeders in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan. I bet the videos would be beautiful.

I can afford to spend more time and money making what I feel are signature videos for my channel. One day the channel will be big enough that all the videos, will be better than this. Not sure how soon but the channel is moving in that direction. And trips to Michigan will be easily accomplished.
These dogs are cool but can be scary lol. I was in Turkey a couple years ago in the mountains. Suddenly my ATV stopped working and I was walking with it next to a small farm. A couple minutes later I saw a big herd of sheep and a Kangal saw me and he was staring at me and barking. I made sure to get away as fast as possible lol. This also happend when I was fishing with my dad in Turkey and we saw a big herd of goats with a farmer and a kangal. The kangal came running to me and he was circling me. My dad was like just put your fishing pole down, because it thinks that you want to play. I put it down and it worked. He got back to work with his herd.
Kangal are my favorite dog that I'll probably never own. They are the ultimate livestock protector and a true wolf killer. I've seen more clips of Kangals holding their own against wolves than any other breed. If I ever live on a farm I will have at least 4 Kangals.
I remember as a child on a vacation in Turkey...in the city Sivas driving through a village two Kangals chased our car. I was soo afraid, that the car occupants calmed me down.Nice memory yet 😅
Why would someone go to sivas in a holiday? 🤣🤣🤣 No offense, I am from Sivas but me nor my family never go to sivas but instead we all go to mediterranian coasts.
As a Turk, I liked the video very much. I would like to point out that; Kangal dog does not need any special training. He learns everything from other older dogs. Even if he doesn't learn, he instinctively knows what to do. Therefore, it does not harm newborn baby animals. On the contrary, he protects them more carefully. In my country, it is often heard that a Kangal dog, who keeps watch for days next to a sheep that is left behind the herd because it has given birth, brings the sheep home healthy. Finally, let me say this: Kangal dog is a guardian angel for the human/animal on the "herd list". It is a nightmare for those who think of harming them.
such an amazing documentary. Thanks for sharing the experience you have with them. I used to have a Kangal dog when I was a kid, He was a guardian of our sheep. He was never getting tired and running all the time. I remember my dad cut his long ears because he was saying it is the weakest part of Kangal dog when they fight with predators. I also remember he was making (yal) which is wheat flour mixed with warm water looked like a fresh dough. He was really like it and eating it with an appetite.
More great work, Zeke! Fascinating breed, super smart, needs an equally smart owner and plenty of land to stay happy on, these dogs look like they have it all!
According to one article I read most LGD's were bred to look like the sheep there were protecting so they couldn't easily be spotted in the group. This made it harder for predators to plan attacks on flocks. Kangals were bred to look like the fawn colored sheep with black faces (Akkaraman Sheep were one fawn colored breed used in Turkey) while dogs like Akbash were bred to protect white sheep (Kivircik). Certain Sheep were suited better for some regions with certain climates and terrain while others sheep were better suited for other regions with different climate so different kinds of dogs were needed for each region and although most all Turkish LGD's share many common bloodlines they also had distinct differences mostly in color but also in size depending on terrain and etc of the regions they were located. Pretty interesting Article.
Very good video on the Kangals and the Kentucky landscape . I have a Romanian rescue Kangal now 7 years old , having had him 4 years now . Now I know why he likes to sit and sleep on my garden table ...they like high ground as the lady said . He is a very social dog , loves to meet other dogs when out walkies and has got a lot better when off the lead ...he will come to me when I call out ....eventually ! He does have a distinctive growl ...very gutteral . I have another Romanian rescue dog and they get on with each other very well . Duke the Kangal and Mila the ❓❓. They love to play and chase each other with lots of rough and tumble. In 4 years they have not needed the vets . I don't get them jabbed and no flea treatments ( no flea problems ) . Best of all , no vet bills so far ! They love raw meat and chicken wings...aswell as some dry and wet dog food . Blessings from the Isle of Wight , England 🇬🇧🆓🇱🇷
I love your videos. I’ve never seen a bad one yet and don’t think I ever will. I have a 9 month old Anatolian Sheperd naked ZsaZsa. Guarding instincts are already coming out lol that deep booming bark.
we own a 180 acre cattle and hay ranch.we already had three sheperds and we ended up resuing a female kangal. shes very vigilant right away.but what i dont understand is when my grand daughters are here our kangal wont let them out of her sight.i was cautious of what her intent was until someone unknown approached our proprty looking for work and millie.our kangal went nuts thinking that man was a threat. to this day she acts as my little girls protector. we have mountain lions evry now and then and millie is not afraid in any way. shes a very unique dog. i love her to death. one thing they need room to roam and move about. they are not house dogs or a traditional pet.
In northern regions of Turkey, kangals watch all the children in the villages when they are not protecting the livestock. Old kangals that do not protect livestock anymore do that 7/24, follow the kids inside and outside of the village, making sure that they are not in danger.
Even they are pretty big they have emotions like a little cat. When I got angry to him, he doesn't eat for a couple of days. Never get jealous of little kids, he always protects them. Greatest dog ever made in Anatolia.
My father told me that they used to put spiked collars on Kangal so that they ward off wolves without worrying about being grabbed by the neck. Fiercely loyal and beautiful animals, I'd like to own one someday
It's not to ward off Wolves. It serves as a way of protection against Wolves since they're going for the throat to kill. Can't do that properly if there's a dozen of spikes surrounding the neck
I have half Kangal half Pyranees pup from a Wyoming Ranch. He is 4 mo. and just a sweetheart. I am a 'stay at home' mom for him. He is a replacement for our American Akita guard dog. We also have a boxer and 4 cats. We live on less than 2 acres in the Rocky Mountains and have a lot of wildlife. If I don't give him a 'job', work with him, or let him out to play with the big dogs, he will entertain himself. So smart, so sweet, and so attentive. He keeps a tally on all the pets. Question: Why do people argue over Kangal being an Antolian dog? He was on lead through a craft fair in a college town. Totally mellow and everyone passing made comments and wanted to pet him. Why do people want to challenge me on telling them he is a Kangal/Pyranees guardian dog? Nobody argued that he has Mastiff in his blood, but his dad is 100% Kangal and his grandpa lives in Turkey.
Another unique behavior displayed by the kangal is when a sheep or cattle heard is on the move ,one kangal will move ahead of the heard to scout ahead , one would guard the rear and some would protect the flanks of the heard from predators
In Turkey they say that when a kangal stops and looks at far away to emptiness he or she probably seen the wolfs even before wolfs seen the pack of sheeps 12:34
That's true they need space to roam, or good, long hikes everyday in nature. Correction: they have been bred not for hundreds of years but for approximately 6000 years. Actual name is Anatolian Shepherd. They are a perfect guard dogs, but when brought up in a right way ( calm, assertive and kind yet decisive leader) they are never aggressive, or violent. They are very loving and loyal to their family/owner, respectful yet shy with others, ferocious with true predators. The good thing is , they don't need an extra training on protection skills. They becoming guard dogs out of their own nature while growing up, and learning to discern who is who and what is what, and how to act when it's needed. Amazing intelligence!
Kangals are different than Anatolians. I have both, the Kangal is much more aggressive than the Anatolian. Bigger , more independent. Mine guard cattle and chickens.
Yes sir you are correct they are two different breeds but the kennel club of tirkey has now labels them both as the same now that interbreeding of the two breeds breeds
Great content, why is it that the Kangals we see in the US never really look like the Kangals in Turkey. The ones we see in the US always looks smaller, head not as big or wide, they look a lot less capable and intimidating than the ones we see from Turkey. They have some ferocious huge ones out there.
Also notice that most shepherd Kangals in Turkey and other regions with big predators hhave their ears cut. So that also gives a different look. Also if these dogs in the video stands up and shows her teeth you would be surprised. But i understand your point.
Poteluz the kangals in this video are more than average. Its not about size, and they look small next to livestock. Its about training and courage. These are more than capable.
Poteluz I had seen on TV in Turkey years ago a news about one kangal which weights 235 lb or 245 lb I cannot be sure right now but it was definetely more than 220 lb I remember. Also as I know their shoulder length may reach up to 1 meter. The apperance difference is I think about the climate. The climate that kangals live in Turkey is acctually quite rough. It is a very cold area and high from the sea. When you take them to different part of Turkey they loose their shape and features also..
I rescued a "Mastiff" puppy once....I've had a few Mastiffs....kinda know how they typically act.... Don't use negative reinforcement training ever.....and I got this dog when it was maybe 3 months old. She didn't exactly look pure bred but who cares it was a rescue. The people were alarmed at how quickly she was growing and they were older. I don't believe they beat her or anything. Anyway....I took her everywhere, trained her and because of her size....and her super high aggression to ANYONE who walk too quickly towards my wife(aside from me)...I sent her to a private trainer. Her fur never stopped at Mastiff length and tail sorta curled...She was the most protective dog I have ever had in my life. She was super badass, smart and vigilant. Vigilant only comes close to discribing it though. I could simply say "watch em" and that was it. If they moved too quickly she'd let em know. All that said....she was lovable to me and my two young kids. I would take another any time. Used to rate Old English Mastiffs as my fav but the Kengal is the bees knees. That training was obedience training btw not gaurd, defense or anything like that. She came that way. At 140 pounds I wanted my wife to feel comfortable and confident while handling her. If you want one of these. You better treat it right. There ain't no white picket fence cute and cuddly in these dogs. These are working dogs. They demand the level of respect anyone working would. Don't do dumb shit with em. They are almost perfect.
So glad to learn about your Kangal guardian dogs. I'm in Frankfort on the other side of the Kentucky River. You have a beautiful farm ... all the best to you all. Your Kangals are beautiful. How would this breed be with goats?

I hope that you might also consider introducing and covering an equally exquisite large-breed guardian dog called the "Akbaş (transliterated into English as 'Akbash'). @@lindan2836, no. you misunderstand. They state it in the video. The Kangals in the US are bigger than the Kangals in Turkey because breeders recognized the wolves here are larger here. I had nothing to do with it. My kangals are imported from Turkey. We have no wolves in Oklahoma.

I remember as a child on a vacation in Turkey...in the city Sivas driving through a village two Kangals chased our car. I was soo afraid, that the car occupants calmed me down.Nice memory yet 😅
You should see the kangals in Aksaray, they walk in pack, once I saw maybe 6 or 7 adult kangals walking together 😂
Why would someone go to sivas in a holiday? 🤣🤣🤣 No offense, I am from Sivas but me nor my family never go to sivas but instead we all go to mediterranian coasts.
Kangal so cool. Look like a giant mix of German shepherds and lab/retriever
They do.
Know a fella with a half Pyrenees/ Anatolian dog. At 8 months, he was an amazing guard dog with goats & chickens. extremely calm and smart. 8 months!!
such an amazing documentary.
I have one and he's viciously protective. Love him
These are Superb Dogs,& well worth the investment!
More great work, Zeke! Fascinating breed, super smart, needs an equally smart owner and plenty of land to stay happy on, these dogs look like they have it all!
I did not have enough room (5 acres) and work for the ones I had here. They came off a 100 acre ranch; my place looked like a tiny sandbox to them! ;)

Such a beautiful and special breed❤️
What an interesting breed! And a beautiful farm.
Love this channel. Goes beyond treating dogs as pets and into the deeper relationship between human and k9.
Another amazing dogumentary! The production value on this rivals big budget made for TV shows.
Caz Gerald I have to definitely agree!!!
I think Zeke has a future in the film industry for sure!
Best dog channel on the internet! Great video.
they make a sensitive relation between the owner. they seems happy thanks from turkey
Love it 👍👍 she sounds like a awesome breeder looking out for her breed!!
Justin R Varga just make sure he stays clear of Kawhi Leonard's feet when he's shooting
Justin R Varga How beautiful! She's lucky to have such a good owner too. You obviously adore her
lmao
Anatolian shephards are not kangals though. Thy are different breed
The fuck is his name?
From a skilled working dog enthusiast , this is a super vid , so much sense. Loved watching this .
Kangal's are such special dogs, beautiful and majestic.
They look as the happiest dogs i have ever seen
we own a 180 acre cattle and hay ranch.we already had three sheperds and we ended up resuing a female kangal. shes very vigilant right away.but what i dont understand is when my grand daughters are here our kangal wont let them out of her sight.i was cautious of what her intent was until someone unknown approached our proprty looking for work and millie.our kangal went nuts thinking that man was a threat.
to this day she acts as my little girls protector.
we have mountain lions evry now and then and millie is not afraid in any way. shes a very unique dog. i love her to death. one thing they need room to roam and move about.
they are not house dogs or a traditional pet.
Tired Old man they love kids and anything thatd not a threat or very small. Kinda instinct glad you have a beauty sir stay safe
In northern regions of Turkey, kangals watch all the children in the villages when they are not protecting the livestock. Old kangals that do not protect livestock anymore do that 7/24, follow the kids inside and outside of the village, making sure that they are not in danger.
Kangals shoul de in pairs get another one
@Beetus Mong they do not like hot climates :(
Your facts are totally wrong they are house pets many people have them as house pets and guard dogs so your totally inaccurate with your facts
Even they are pretty big they have emotions like a little cat. When I got angry to him, he doesn't eat for a couple of days. Never get jealous of little kids, he always protects them. Greatest dog ever made in Anatolia.
Anatolia dogs are different from kangals. Look them up
@@evalorlinplaza4465 I didn't say it is Anatolia dogs but kangals are from Anatolia.
@@Baandera-that's what he said
What a great preservation breeder!
Kansas are beautiful, intelligent, extremely loyal and will lay down their lives for the livestock they protect.
Nicht "Kansas " sondern "Kangals".🙂
This channel is the BEST!!!!!!!👍👍
Amazing place for happy shepherd dog life. Purpose and love👌
*yes true information thanks*
Kangals are different than Anatolians. I have both, the Kangal is much more aggressive than the Anatolian. Bigger , more independent. Mine guard cattle and chickens.
Yes sir you are correct they are two different breeds but the kennel club of tirkey has now labels them both as the same now that interbreeding of the two breeds breeds
I wish I get a Kangal puppy as my own pet. Love them!
Great explanation, İ only need to add that they are the most sensitive dogs ever!
Our Kangal bros are conquering America 😁 greetings from Turkey 🖐️ take care these beautys ❤️ My Kangals, Bozo and Keshik say "hi" to your Kangals 😊
Strength, courage and loyalty. Turkish Lions.
Although they can calculate risks, these dogs know no fear except sudden noise. I am lucky enough to have 4 of them, or they have me.
Beautiful dogs!
I always wanted a Kangal, now my father is going to buy me one
Great content, why is it that the Kangals we see in the US never really look like the Kangals in Turkey. The ones we see in the US always looks smaller, head not as big or wide, they look a lot less capable and intimidating than the ones we see from Turkey. They have some ferocious huge ones out there.
Poteluz The dogs you see in these videos from Turkey very rarely show Sivas Kangals they are Malak dogs and Boz Shepherds cross bred for size ...
We have bigger ones here in Turkey but sheperds give more importance here to athletic and protecting capacity of dogs (at least as much as size).
Awesome quality!!!!!
Brilliant brilliant video! I’ve always been fascinated with this magnificent breed but this video really sealed the deal 😅
I can show you plenty of them when I go to animal shelter.
Kangals are beautiful dogs, I hope one day to have enough land to get one of these giants
First time I have heard of this breed!! Thank You!!!
As I witnessed in my village in Turkey perfect!
I'm fascinated by the relationship between Livestock and LGDs. The trust and respect they show each other is interesting and delightful
Those dogs seem really well cared for. :)
Ich habe einen kangal /Schäferhund es sind alle positiven Eigenschaften in diesem wunderbaren Hund. Ich liebe ihn 😍
Btw Lexington, Kentucky is also a nice city, not just country like this :3
What a beautiful farm!
Dogumentary TV >>> Thank you for the excellent video on the "Kangal" dog native to Turkey. I hope that you might also consider introducing and covering an equally exquisite large-breed guardian dog called the "Akbaş (transliterated into English as 'Akbash'). Many thanks for your excellently-produced informative videos.
Yes, I am glad to hear someone say it. We need bigger kangals in the US because we have bigger wolves.
No you do not! Leave the breed as it is!
I suppose they got the strongest bite force from any domesticated dog..
They have the strongest bite force out of any breed of dog that is domesticated
@Adonis Nomos which dog has the highest bit force
I thank God for You. Love, Light, Peace, Music and Joy
Zeke, your channel just keeps getting better and better.
Life on a farm with beautiful dogs.

Hello. I'm watching the channel from Romania. I noticed that there aren't any videos on romanian breeds, and we have 3 breeds, all of them wonderful livestock guardians. Maybe some day I will watch a video on at least a romanian breed. Thank you!
I’m going to get a Kangal puppy this May 2020
