“Chekov who?” Damn straight. Walter Koenig was obviously so wasted over the course of his career… and if it wasn’t for this role, we would all have no idea just how great of an actor he is.

What I really love about the 2nd half of S5 (and particularly this episode) is how much screen time JMS gave to Jeff Conaway (Zack). The man had a very troubled past, and would shortly pass away in a very troubled future - but for RIGHT NOW, the man got to show off his acting chops. I particularly loved him in the finale.

Always thought it was interesting that despite their differences Bester and Byron had exactly the same attitude towards “mundanes”.

Bester and psycorps foments the animosity. Makes it easier indoctrinate younger telepaths into the us vs them mentality.

A truly underrated episode and really one that could and should have been made in Season 3 or even 2 - giving us the PsiCorps perspective helps put what we see from them in the show into context. That said, one thing it does do being right here is serve (along with Byron) as harbingers of the coming Telepath War. Not to spoil things but episodes to come will more clearly show what that war actually will be.

I will respectfully disagree with one point- if Bester thought she would produce a stronger telepath, or one with special abilities, he wouldn't think twice about it

If you can find copies (it's out of print) the Psi Corps trilogy is excellent and gives a lot of Bester's background, as well as the origins of the Corps.
The Centauri Prime and Technomage trilogies are excellent too

First you think the guy is kind of hardcore and she's kind of a mouse. Just giddy to be on a mission. But then you see her keeping her giddiness even through some fucked up shit and you begin to understand. The really disturbed one is _her_ . At the end after killing this one guy she gets so hot she can't stay off Bester's dick and then you understand how fucking messed up psy corps really is.
This is a top tier episode that I would rewatch in every marathon and even solo. It floats outside of timespace and will allways be solid gold.
btw she's the daughter from National Lampoon's holiday with Chevy Chase! What is it with Babylon 5 picking all those gems and anti type casting them, showing their real talent. Bester himself included...
also love the "subliminal" messages Great job😄

And that is why Edgers was, despite his means to accomplish it... right. Byrons way would have been the better way towards peace and acceptance, but both sides didnt see the real end goal or take it seriously enough. The 'mundanes' couldnt get past fear, or were distracted with larger things, the telepaths too insular and constantly entertaining the idea of superiority.
Being sympathetic to the Psicorp is like being sympathetic to a certain group of 1940's germans... especially the fact the fear and attitude towards the mundanes the Psicorp drills into its people is mostly of its own making through its own actions, like a bully playing the victim card as justification about their actions to others despite smiling internally over the feelings the power/fear trips they get in bullying others.

For me, the "scary" thing about Bester is how charming and personable he is here when contrasted to the rest of the series. He is a hero to the newbies, he is trusted by his superiors, and he goes out his way to help (in his own sort of way) telepaths who need help. But he spaces/summarily executes mundanes, screws with Garibaldi, etc...
Like how JMS described him, "a monster never sees a monster in the mirror"

I mean the thing about Psi Corps, you need to think of them as fascists. You might understand their perspective, but either way an org like that cannot and should not exist and needs to be defeated for the good of everyone.

It's one thing that occurred to me watching the reaction - could this episode have been earlier in the season to remind people of what telepaths go through? Mega, Brent and Jeff all seem to have forgotten how othered Telepaths are. Would it have softened their attitudes to Byron and company?

    • @Petrosman
      @Petrosman Місяць тому +1

@@neilbiggs1353 idk, I think it's fine placed later. We couldn't really get it earlier. But yeah, I think Brent especially, but Mega too forget that Bester and the Psi Corps are a very dark org, and we don't know everything they have done to their telepaths.

Yes it was good to see things from Bester's side. But what a lackluster story to show it around.
I have tried a few times to write this comment... I don't want to be negative when Mega seemed to really like this episode. I think I might have felt that way myself when I first saw it on TNT back in the day. But on DVD re-watches later on, I started to not like this one very much. Well, I like Bester and Zach. But the story is kind of lame. I wrote a rather negative review of it on IMDB many years ago. You have two newbie psi-cops, which I thought had to be like P10 or P12 members of the Corps already. Why show them a general-public propaganda ad? You have this incident in a Psi-Corp base and no one detected any weird vibes going on? And then there is all the police investigation work that should have been done long before they even left for Babylon 5. I mean, Drunk Garibaldi could have done a better job than the Psi-Cops did. ( Maybe that's the point though... the P-Cops don't need to be real cops, they just rely on telepathy. ) And those were only some of my nitpicks.
Sorry to be such a downer, I was fully expecting Mega to like this one and I was right.

All good. Some valid points but after such a mediocre season it was a highlight for me.
