After a lifetime of listening to this song I see how brilliantly it captures the metamorphosis of thought and spirit that accompanies the years, but I am mystified by how she knew all this at such a young age. I have concluded that Joni is a special being -- like Newton or Mozart or Leonardo.
Yes, I further believe she is deeply intuitive and so in tune with the rhythms of nature. I know when “Clouds” was first released I played it so often it would play in my head without the stylus touching the vinyl. I would guess I sure wasn’t the only one who found this masterpiece album to be the friend you turn to when you need a soul hug.
In some ways, my favorite of all her albums, although Hejira is a work of genius. Yet... so many songs from Clouds stick with you forever, including this one.
Early Joni was by far the best. Her voice was stronger and prettier and the music had a magical quality to it. Blue would be the end of her peak. After that it was one relationship after another we had to endure. Then the music became a little too trendy.
Watching this I can still feel like that 17 year old boy again hearing this for the first time. Oh I had such a crush. There will never be another Joni Mitchell on this earth again. TG her time here has been the same time as mine.
An original artist, with something poignant to say about life. Joni brought the art of live performance to highest level in her life. We are stardust Billion-year-old carbon We are golden Caught in the devil's bargain And we've got to get ourselves Back to the garden
i love this song to me it represents my youth and somehow my sad love life at the moment full of sadness but still somewhat hopeful and cheerful and btw she is so stunning in this video in the pink dress absolutely stunning.
"I gave you all my pretty years Then we began to weather And I was left to winter here While you went west for pleasure And now you're flying back this way Like some lost homing pigeon They've monitored your brain, you say And changed you with religion" One of a million examples where Joni appears to be writing out of my own diary.. Best part is I know you all feel the same way! Hail the Queen!!
Isn't it remarkable how music genres develop? And that there are artists within these genres who develop a distinct voice? And all the more remarkable that there are those like Joni who can simultaneously transcend that genre with their brilliance.
My word! We tend to think that cerebral thoughts are a recent thing. But Joni is as real as it comes, before many of us were born. And, how good is her musicianship? Peerless.
everyday I thank god for lending the world such a beautiful soul and I thank Joni for sharing her talent with us. visited Saskatoon in 76 and wish I could have run in to her back then. love you joni
Man! scientologists do not deserve this lovely angel🤣 was she referring to Leonard then? Cristal clear voice and poetic lyrics. There will never be somebody quite like our Joanie💎
I wish you could adopt me so I could be by your side to paint and sing. I remember in high-school trying to master all your songs. You voice so pure, your thoughts sublime. I feel like I've been living in a cave without other artist. Love you.
Little tip for that: before you watch a video, slide the scrubber to the end of the end of the video and press replay and this time there will be no ads!

@@Dinkys999 Thank you for reminding me why I voted for Trump as a Bernie supporter. The incessant toxicity is a disease on this planet. Here is purity of spirit and your inner filth must be projected onto an innocent person. And by the way, Trump won in a landslide because of this sociopathic behavior.

I agree!
I agree with you with all my heart. Joni Mitchell is extraordinary.
Well said. Couldn’t agree more.
She's an old soul. She's been here before.

Imagine being so beautiful and so talented. Joni is from another world.
On loan in the gallery of our time here.
If you ever wondered what an angel sounds like when she speaks, that's what she sounds like.
My favorite off Clouds but then again the entire album is fabulous.
My favorite Joni Album!

I wrote a 5000 word English language investigation essay about these lyrics... never enjoyed writing an essay more!
Would it be possible to read your essay? I have always been interested in geeting deep into Joni's touching imagery...
Omg, I'd love to read that!
@@LittleEarthquakes97 who do you think it's about? cohen?
I’d happily read this!! Could you share a link?
Same here! (France actually)
Heaven. She taught us boys how to feel.
Some boys. ❤
She's still teaching me 😂 even on the nth' go round of listening to wonderful 👍🏻 Joni
I love this woman. Such a perfect piece of music.
I love her more!
She’s so beautiful. Inside and out. I just love her so much. 💖

She is my favorite songwriter and she sounds like an angel. This is one of my favorite songs of hers - top five - about a former lover of hers.
Incredible. Beautiful, both the song and the singer. I love you Joni.
Joni = God's Angel of music.
i love this song to me it represents my youth and somehow my sad love life at the moment full of sadness but still somewhat hopeful and cheerful and btw she is so stunning in this video in the pink dress absolutely stunning.
Best one off Clouds. Midway is the second one followed by Chelsea Morning, Both Sides Now, and so on. But The Gallery is very special.

OMG I love this song! Joni is the best!
Absolutely charming.....
Rediscovered Joni from my past and rediscovered much. From an artist to an artist , thanks.
Having been in love with a few artists I feel this deeply. Every hair on my body stands on end from the melodies in this song
Refined and intensely poetic. Beautiful!
Exquisite! Such a beautiful voice.
💗💖💝💖💗💖💝
Love Joni, love this song
My word! We tend to think that cerebral thoughts are a recent thing. But Joni is as real as it comes, before many of us were born. And, how good is her musicianship? Peerless.
What - you think your generation invented thought? What??
Beautiful Joni, beautiful music, beautiful words
perfection, bliss.

A gentle, true spirit.
This song makes me cry and I don’t really know why that is.
I cannot in any way relate personally to the song lyrics but I don't know where the tear comes from every time I play it.
This is such a beautiful song, anytime it frequents me in mind and heart.eye see such narrative brought to life in my own experience. :)
Fabulous Performance! Fantastic Song! 💓.
I prefer the release version where she harmonizes with herself. But this is excellent anyway. She was so imaginative and creative.
If there are angels, this is what they'll sound like.
perfect performance
Joni looked like and had the voice of an angle!
Gracious in every sense of the word.
Man! scientologists do not deserve this lovely angel🤣 was she referring to Leonard then? Cristal clear voice and poetic lyrics. There will never be somebody quite like our Joanie💎
This song is widely thought to be about Leonard
the reference to Scientologists is about being changed by religion
I have seen an angel with a guitar & she is Joni Mitchell
Magnificent! Thank you
Truly a song about a lovely woman, unaware of the noses greed and her disillusion.
At least she learned from it.
yikes!! never heard this...only, Blue, ...I want to be Joni....I learned to train my voice with her songs...""Blue," Precious !!
This is wonderful!
Still leaves me spellbound

Lovely
Excellent.
That single-person clap is hilarious
that's why she made the comment, "I guess there's one here". God she was so cute, how could you not help but fall in love with her.
This is from her 1970 performance at Royal Albert Hall, London.
I thought I had seen the whole thing but I hadn't seen this one.
angel
THAT'S JUST WHAT I WAS THINKING. AND I'M NO ROMANTIC. ANGEL.....
Beatiful
Beautiful Jony, genius xxx
Alistair she also taught boys and girls a lot of beautiful vocabulary
Singing about Leonard Cohen!
Seems like he got in to scientology for a bit
where did you get this from?
That little laugh after "changed you with religion"
An angel
this was edited out of the bbc tv broadcast show.. amazing.. where's the rest? there must be lots of stuff on their archives.. thanks for posting !
Another one of her many songs about her relationship with Leonard Cohen.
Never knew........must have had some deep conversations. What other songs? Thanks
0:21 lol she looked so freaked out when she heard that scientologist clap
Does she know how much you love her
Did you mean , we, l wonder
Yes, 😔 sorry.
work that crowd, joni.
Te amo.
❤
They've monitored your brain, you say
And changed you with religion - The Scientology reference...
Leonard Cohan
Is this song about L. Ron Hubbard?
No, but she is referring to being changed by religion. There were a lot of Scientologists living in and around Laural Canyon in the late 60s.
like a collection of dead butterflies
or The Picture of Dorian Gray
mirror to herself who wanted to be portaited and throw away the rest of the portraits
The Don Bradman of everything not cricket !
SOOOO manny "songs" , !
It's her carousel.
I Really despise that this lovely singing followed by our presumptive pres in ad. Totally makes me not want to tune in to U tube!

It is somewhat autobiographical about one of her former lovers.
It's about Leonard Cohen, who was into Scientology for a while, a little before he and Joni dated
