Finding more detailed information in English on these two battles was quite difficult, so I mostly relied upon descriptions from the Japanese Wiki Corpus and Sengokujidai.org.
However, I was also able to use the primary source of Ota Gyuichi through his work in "The Chronicles of Lord Nobunaga".

I always wanted to play this battle in Shogun Total war where I can shell Oda troops using Mori ships while defending the castle!
To hear of the Mori and Oda navies waging a sea battle is one legendary feat. To cover the sidelined naval battles Oda Nobunaga had waged against his lesser and greater rival clans such as the Kitabatake in Ise Bay and the Takeda across the shores of Sagami is another more bizarre tale to explore in this Age of Warring Clans where pirates do rule the East Asian waves
Grand Admiral Yi sunshin: Not in my watch!
@Kk Kk yes and a genral who beat 330 ships with 12 ships who never lost a single battle nor ships who yeeted likes of shimazu, kuki, yohsitaka, and todo takatora. Don't even try man don't. Your one of those anti Koreans. Jusy stop it and get a life.
@@KkKk-br4iw also if your gonna make a argument where yi won bc of sneak attack bc I heard that so many times by anti Koreans and it's not even funny. Like even this youtube channel know his greatness.
The naval battles in history never get enough attention. Thanks Shogunate!
The most famous naval force is the Murakami navy.
Murakami Navy was said to be the strongest navy in the Sengoku period.
They ruled the Seto Inland Sea.
They were both pirates and friends of the Mori family.
The Murakami Suigun was ruled jointly by three families.
Later, they sided with the Toyotomi family, but Hideyoshi Toyotomi's ban on pirates made their activities difficult, and they were moved to a territory without a sea during the Edo period.
And I am surprised there is no English wiki on Murakami navy.
When I saw the video on Sengoku Studies I did not know anyting about their naval capabilities. That's why I'm so glad all of you are collaborating on certain subjects. Keep up the great work 👍🏻
Loving this content ❤
The battles that couldn't be covered in the already packed and eventful main series
I haven’t dabbled much into the development of their warships. Enlightening video!
A book I have on the Imjin war went into detail on the Turtle ships and his conclusion was that the turtle ships had the spikes on top and were coated to be fire resistant, they were not armored. The old Korean documentation never said anything about armor. It seemed a translation (to English or French) mangled some words and that is when the idea the ships were armored gained currency. He also points out that Kuki, even though he was one of Hideyoshi`s admirals, did not send over armored ships (which the author thought was pretty foolish)
Could you please tell me which book it was? And do you have any recommendations for books on this time period in general? Thanks!
My impression is that Yi Sun-sin's turtle ships weren't ironclads so much as they were "woodclads," that is, wooden ships built with way stronger wooden members (or "scantlings") than you'd expect in ships of their size. The legendary USS Constitution is one such "woodclad," a frigate built with battleship-grade scantlings proof against the armament of many British men o' war of the time, which is how she earned the nickname "Old Ironsides."
Yeah a source on what book it is would be good
Was this book The Imjin War by Samuel Hawley?

This is my most favorite episode that you have ever made!
Talk about the superiority of the Takeda cavalry and some horse tactics. That would be rather fun
Always good to see a new post
Everyone else: wow so cool naval battle!
Yi son shin : pathetic.
Fax

This educational video is perfect for putting you to sleep. Like a lullaby disguised as a mini-doc
I have the upmost respect for your videos, patience, information, work, diligence.the reference you pay is honorable, truthful, and Award able 🤔🇯🇵💗🇯🇵🤔
Please talk more about naval battles of the sengoku period it's very interesting and something that i feel is ignored when talking about Japan's warring states period 😊
Love your videos. Can't wait to be done with work, so I can binge watch your Sengoku series.
This was a really good video and I'm glad you covered this more in depth.
Excellent episode!
Thanks for the amazing video ❤
Great video!
How those ships stayed standing.. small wave or turn and oops..
Very interesting history, and cool ships!
I wouldn’t mind a few more naval battles 😉
Wonderful narration
Please make a video about how you make your videos, they are very inspiring
Whoever did that painting REALLY did not like Mr. Frois
This is so epic
You really have to wonder why the Japanese didn’t go all-in on naval artillery during the Sengoku Era, given the success the Oda had with much larger and gun-armed ships, and given that this was when boarding tactics were being supplanted by line-of-battle tactics in Europe and (once Admiral Yi was put in naval command) in Korea.
This is even more ironic once you realize that during the one other time when naval combat fundamentally changed in a way that all but completely invalidated the previous paradigm (from naval artillery to aircraft carriers), Japan was one of the three navies that invested heavily into carriers right from the start, and the first to master carrier strike doctrine.
❤❤❤❤❤ another video!
Hey, i love your content. Could you make a Video about how Samurai dealed with their own mortality? How should a person face death? Is there a afterlife?
Hello brother, I will ask you some questions about Ninja
1- What does a ninja eat and what food can it be?
2- How many hours a day do ninjas practice? What are the training exercises?
3- What are the basic rules of ninja?
4 - Can a ninja vanish? Because it's fast?
5- Does a ninja tell people he is a ninja and reveal his identity? be hidden from view
6 - What is the basis of the ninja in killing, I mean, does he kill the poor? Or kill a poor woman, if only he kills his enemies,

A moment of silence for every Mori Wako raiders..
hi shogunate, i am looking for reference images and materials about japanese navy ships of the time, but it's very hard to find them on google and aside from a few images there's barely anything at all. I wonder if you could help me with the info, or at least where to look for them ?
Almost feels like the result of time travelers presenting the idea of modern warships and firearms to shoguns.
This battle is conflict between Oda army and the monk warriors at Osaka Castle site
Is this footage of boats battling from a video game?
12:11 and yet they say that Warhammer 40k's "just stick a building on top of a swaying mode of transport and send it into close-quarters battle" is unrealistic.
Hey what impotence did Izumi Kagoshima have in Japanese history I'm staying there at the moment and I went to a samurai's house and a Musium
If Nobunaga was able to put at least six big ironclads to sea, where were they during the Imjin War? Why weren't more of them built to oppose Yi Sun-sin's turtle ships?
They were, even larger ships were built. But they had two problems: first, they were very slow and couldn't maneuver well, which allowed smaller, but more agile turtle ships to dominate them using familiar terrain, reefs and currents. Second, they weren't very seaworthy and some broke down or capsized and sank in open sea. So, while they did their job as coastal monitors in Nobunaga's wars, in Korea they were outmatched.
The ship in the thumbnail resembles Noah's Ark!!!!!!!
what depiction of Noah's vessel strikes you the best? Heard that there are plenty of illustrations and replications of this biblical vessel
I should play Shogun 2 again..
I must wonder; when i see such large lumbering ships as the Bune and similar, would it not perhaps have been logical to develop ramming tactics by faster smaller vessels with armoured bows? After all, crashing a large hole into such a super sized vessel would, even if the rammer were lost in the process, be an efficient trade with regards to power?
To be able to ram a ship needs to be fast and heavy, also they need very sturdy keels and a somewhat deep draft.
A light ship would just bounce off, due to lack of momentum.
And the junk stile of ships are not sturdy enough, as most did not even had a proper "bow to stern" keel, but were made of bulkhead like sections butted togheter.
Plus, the flat bottom of those designs did not had the narrow beam to be fast enough to ram, and had a shallow draft, so the ram would make them nosedive at every rowstroke.
They woud need to redesign theyr ships at every detail to look like an european galley or something like it.
Koreans used tides and currents to just smash these ships against one another. They were very bad at actually sailing, being massive fortresses on ships.
Couldn't the Oda clan get cannons on their ships from trading with the Portuguese?
There does seem to be versions of Japanese ships that use cannons but they appear to be rare.
Even in orea invasion, Japan doesnt sent any cannon ships. They do have what they called hand cannon. A ridiculously large teppou used in opening stage of boarding enemy ship.
Wich video in the series is this one replacing? Im trying to put it in order with my others in my playlist
Armoured vessels with cannon. Gee, those could have really helped against the Kobukson and Panokson of the Korean navy in the 1590's, no?
The problem is that they really did not have cannons and instead just large matchlocks. So when actual cannons went up against them they were torn to shreds.
@@TheShogunate I thin Mori got idea to arm their ships with cannon were influenced by the Korean as Mori territory was closer to Korea.

Oda Nobunaga:"Created and floating castle for the future Japanese conquer Korea"
Yi Sun Shin:"Do you have heard about Floating Tank?"
If the Mori studied/knew Rome’s actions during the Punic Wars they’d know how to counter those large armored vessels.
What did the romans do to counter their offensive foe?
@@andrewmorales6390 Turned naval battles into boarding actions/land battles on open ocean where the Legions had superiority, with long extension like ladder contraptions that could swivel to and connect to enemy ships enabling a open route for Roman heavy infantry to board Carthaginian warships and take the fight to them hand to hand instead of open naval battles where Rome had the disadvantages due to Carthage sea power and experience being one step above Rome’s at the time.
@@cjthebeesknees Aren't such boarding tactics a great risk in battles where gunpowder are prevalent to expose combat mariners to greater dangers?
