I have the same 241 and changed the motor out to an electronic motor. I had to get a very small pulley for the motor to slow it down enough to get a controlled stitch. I liked your idea of converting it to a roller foot and I have the parts to do it next. Very nice video on upgrading this type of commercial machine! Thanks for your videos.
Thank you for documenting thses modifications, I am in the process of making the adjustments so I will be able to do vinyl cording and top stitching with my 241-13.
Very useful video, I will try to do the same in my grand mom Sears Kenmore, for sentimental reasons, I want to upgrade, and let the Singer, for small jobs, Thank You
Thank you. I wish I could purchase an industrial machine. But I do not have money. I appreciate you making this modification video. Thank you, from your #1 Fan.
Hi Miguel, I am going to try to answer all of your questions. The Industrial Singer 111w150 Sewing Machine at a the price of 200 USDollars, is a bargain...provided that, it is in good shape with all of its parts, ...besides you are mentioning it is walking-foot, ideal to do upholstery...BTW, I never had one, but with the trade mark is more than enough to express a judgement. The pfaff 145 is an excellent german sewing machine, more ideal to do general upholstery and sew leather...the price is OK if everything is original and in good condition. The consew 226r is also a good original, heavy duty, japanese machine, and the price is ok. If I were to choose one from the three, I'd rather choose the pfaff 145 ...it depends on the money in your pocket. 1. The common size to do upholstery is the 'standard polyester thread 138' for a needle size 18(110) to 22(14); a thicker thread can be used to do 'on top stitches', also polyester number 207 for a needle 22(140) to 23(160) 2. Regarding the best contact cement, we have two, one that is applied by hand with a brush or spatula and the other very fluid applied with a painting gun...about trade marks, I cannot recommend, because, I am in Mexico, and suppose you are in USA. I use a yellow glue which comes in cans or bottles...check these links if you are in USA : www.homedepot.com/p/DAP-32-fl-oz-Weldwood-Original-Contact-Cement-00272/100125525 www.tandyleather.com/en-usd/home/department/leather-cement-glue/2525-360.aspx www.ebay.es/itm/Petronios-Master-All-Purpose-Cement-Glue-Shoe-Repair-Adhesive-Glue-4-oz-/291064753112 Do a test beforehand trying out one of these products. 3. The common stitch in upholstery is 5 mm...it could be 6 mm or on the contrary 4 mm 4. We can do upholstery with 'an industrial, simple transportation, regular sewing machine' but, it would be better to sew heavy materials with an 'industrial, triple transportation/walking foot, sewing machine'...the feet compound help us to defeat/overpass bulky parts of material. Hope it helps, Cesar
Thank you so much! I was able to connect my roller foot successfully due to your thorough video tutorial. I appreciate all of the videos you create. They are so helpful to me.
Cechaflo, when you can't unscrew the bolt with screwdriver with small handle you should push this screwdriver with one hand and with the other hand turn the screwdriver use adjustable wrench ( grab screwdriver near the head of the bolt)
Got a brother db2-b755-3 and want to use a roller foot and have NEEDLE issues wanna use a 110/18 needles but tried a 100/16 and it felt like I was hitting the bobbin case. Works fine using the 80/12 needles
You have got a good sewing machine. There would not be much problem to attach the roller foot. Do not forget to change the needle plate for a new one that has a wider hole to easily let the new needles(18, 16) to cross down through. While the machine is off you could carefully check (moving it by hand) if the thicker needles really touch something beneath or it is the rubbing against the plate hole. If it is really touching something beneath it would be necessary to move the shuttle a very little to right side (there are three little bolts that fasten the shuttle mechanism). I have realized the Brother machine you have is similar to the Singer I show in my video. ua-cam.com/video/IJvh7yoNN4s/v-deo.html
@@Cechaflo will try. Do you know if the walking foot attachments they sell work on these machines too. gonna buy 3 roller boots for MY jukiddl552 ,brother and singer 491. Tried asking local shops but since attachments are under 20 they dont want to INSTALL or sell the products. Thank you for your expertise. Your an UPHOLSTERY God
Hello Chechaflo, thank you for your videos. You have taught me a lot. I am having an issue with adjusting my singer 241 12 to do automotive upholstery. I did everything as your videos instructed and that all went well but when I attempted to change the stitch length my handheld gets jammed once the plunger is pressed down. I am unable to move it forward or backward. Please advise me as to what I could do because I have no money for any other machine and I just got my first paid project but customer wants long bold topstitching. Thank you so much Maestro
Hello Harold, It also happened to me and others. What you have to do is 'force' the big wheel back and forth to release it while the 'stitch length button' is pressed down. While you press down the button another person could help move the wheel with bare hands. If too tight, then it would be necessary to hold the 'wheel' with a 'pressure jaw locking pliers'. To not damage the wheel surface cover it with a rag or scrap of leather or vinyl. Please, let us know what happened.
I can see how this roller foot can be useful. With the links on another post you gave links to where to get them too. Thank you. I could sew memory foam in the middle of 2 pieces of cloth that way compressing it as it sews, for an example. Does the 241 of yours have the same needle plates as the singer 15 and singer 31 ? It seems singer has the same plates from 1880's on up to this machine you have. On the links you have below, I looked at the prices on used machines. I got a very good deal at $200 CDN ($175 U.S.). It might not look good, but I can fix it so it does with work. Thank you again Cesar
When you set the roller to the feed dog. You mentioned the feed dog has to be hidden below the plate. When the feed goes back up,should the roller height be set to the point where you cant spin the roller easily by hand ? Or should it be firmly set to the height where the feed dog will spin it.
Hopefully this video is useful to understand much better how the height of a presser foot (roller or flat) is done ua-cam.com/video/_QHSX8rXIXo/v-deo.html
Your Videos are very helpful! I do knot know if you mention this elsewhere but in general, what brand/needles do you use for leather? It is very difficult to look on the internet and figure what will work for the 641-12. Also do you think the roller foot would help with sewing fur? Specifically sheep fleece sewing onto very heavy backing. Duck or felt. Thank you for your help. Looking forward to modify my machine!
Amigo Cechaflo.
thanks cesar for the advice. i like to invest in a used sawing machine and keep my eyes open for a used 1 on ebay. the one you mentioned sounds good to me. seeing how much experience and knowledge you have . i enjoy your channel. there is one question why dont you talk in your video's. is it down to all the different languages etc.
Yes, I think English is at this moment the 'universal language'. I do not speak because I still need more practice and I don't want my users to be guessing what I'm saying. My native language is Spanish.
Dear Cesar, Thanks to you I have carried out the conversion of this exact machine (except for the large needle adaptations) to sew light weight leather. Can yoi say why the upper thread frays and breaks when it tries to sew three layers of skived leather? thank you.
Perhaps, when the needle passes the layers of leather bends a little and could be rubbing the plate hole. It would be necessary to change the needle plate with a hole lightly bigger. Besides, check out if the 'hook point' of shuttle is not rubbing the needle. Please, let me know what happened. Welcome to this channel anytime!
The video is great!! I have two Singers 251-21 and a 251-11, Can either of these machines be adapted like the one in the video? they both look similar to yours.
@@Cechaflo Great!! Now to decide on which to set up. With the use of the round wheel foot, 1 feed dog, would I still need to glue leather before sewing to keep the layers from feeding unevenly?
hi cesar can you get away with using just one sawing machine for leather such as the singer 241-12 or would i need to invest in more than 1 sawing machine. for different stitch patterns or could you recommend a second hand leather sawing machine thats suitable for all types of stitches as you can tell im new to this. thanks your workmanship is amzing and i really enjoy watching how you work.
About to take the plunge on your classes. What is a good starter machine for upholstry/vinyl. Need to re-do my pontoon boat seats. Will a Singer 4423 work well?
You could start with your machine if the material is not too thick. The ideal machine to do upholstery is a double or triple transport sewing machine (walking foot) ua-cam.com/video/zHZpMBBC4Zc/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/U3HBXBDDKoo/v-deo.html
Hola.
Caesar, I wish I could afford one of the machines you recommend but they are just beyond my means. What are your thoughts on a Sailrite Standard? Maybe something comparable in price? I LOVE your videos by the way!!! Really inspiring! I just need to be able to afford to get into the game!!!
The ideal sewing machine to do upholstery is an industrial, flat bed, single needle, triple transport (walking foot) sewing machine. ua-cam.com/video/U3HBXBDDKoo/v-deo.html New ones are very expensive. I think the budget you mentioned is more than enough to get a used machine in perfect condition. I have found this link for you:www.advancedsewing.com/usedsewingmachines.html I have realized they sell good trade marks, such as Juki, Consew, Pfaff, Brother, Adler, etc. It is a matter of doing your own research by getting in touch with a professional vendor from this store. Another handy option would be to get in touch with John from Lucky Needle. He could provide you good assistance in order to get a sewing machine at an accessible price. I have realized he is a sales representative of some good trade marks. Click and check out 'sewing machines section'. Do not forget to get a 'triple transport machine' (walking foot) Or a 'double transport'(walking foot) at least. I hope this information helps.
Hi my friend, from France!!! Very nice videos!! I have an old singer 31-15 and I try to sew 12mm foam with vinyl. You think the roller can do that?? ( I have seen singer professional walking foot attachment too..is it better) Can you make a photo or video too see if it works with yours? 👌❤️❤️Thanks a lot
Dear Sam, I have realized you have a powerful industrial Singer sewing machine. You could adapt a roller foot to ease the sewing process on thicker materials. I started to do car upholstery with an old my mom's Singer and I adapted it a roller foot.
It depends on the fabric/vinyl clearance of the machine. I mean the height of the space between head arm end and bottom base.. I started doing upholstery with my mom's domestic Singer. I had to attach it a small roller presser foot. Thereafter, I bought a Union Special similar machine, semi-inudtrial and I had to put a bigger roller presser foot. www.amazon.com/NGOSEW-SINGER-Sewing-Machine-ROLLER/dp/B077BSP26C
@@Cechaflo thank you. I started with my mom singer as a kid. Little did I realize I'd enjoy sewing at 61 yrs old. I find it relaxing. I have about 50 domestic machines, hard to pick a favorite. But bought a 1926 Singer 31-15 originally just for the table set up to use my Singer 1200....well I like using the big boy. Lol I'm going to swap the clutch motor (like sewing with a jet on afterburner) to a servo motor.. your channel has been a huge help. Thank you very much
im finding your videos really helpful....but do you have any on doing a service on an industrial machine please ...i.e. a full oil flush and change....thank you
Hi, I have been following your tutorials for some time and I learn something new on every single one of them, thank you for taking the time to teach us how to use the machines, God bless you! I do have a question regarding the "adjusting the length of the stitch" on my Singer 245-3 which is similar at the one you are using in this video, and you adjusted the "stitch length" without any issues. I have the manual and just as you did I pressed the plunger as I rotate the balance wheel, I can feel when the plunger drops but my issue is that then I am not able to turn the balance wheel on any direction, is stuck there and the stitch is very long and I cannot adjust it. As old as this machine is (1940?) it is new to me and I want to be able to use it, I think that once I figure out the stitch length issue, I should be in pretty good shape to start sewing in it with the correct stitch length. Any advice will be greatly appreciated, once again thanks for all your videos, they are great!
Hello Jose, You are not the only one who has faced his kind of issue. The 'big wheel' is stuck and it seems it wil not move anymore...it will be necessary the help of a partner...while your partner is pressing the 'button' you would have to force the 'big wheel' to the front or to the back...if the stitches are too short, it means you have to force the wheel forwards...on the contrary, it the stitches are large the wheel should be moved backwards. Grasp the wheel with both hands and do it.
Thank you so much for your reply, I tried that and did NOT work, the wheel still won't move, I beginning to think that either the grease inside that part of the machine is so hard and the mechanism is really stuck or is someone has messed up with that part? I opened that top part and saw the plunger mechanism that drops into a groove inside the machine, the top part has a little screw and I am wondering if the screw was changed of position? which way is the little screw inside the plunger supposed to be facing? This screw is the one on the tip of the plunger in the middle, right between the end of the two oiler tips. Thanks in advance you for you attention to this matter. Jose.
+karwork, I think you have to look for a 'sales representative' in/near the place where you are, in order to get an 'original piece'...these 'roller feet' have very 'small rolling balls' in the central rotation balls. If you contact these places, maybe could get the required piece or some information at least: www.advancedsewing.com/usedsewingmachines/pfaff.html www.tekin-online.com/en/
i can hear the clutch motor in the background but find it incredible how slow you can sew with this machine what is the rpm of that motor is it 1750 or the high sped 3500
I'm thinking of buying a 241-12. where did you find the heavy feed dog and roller wheel to make it better for auto seat cover work? what other suggestions do you have for that machine? thanks
If it's affordabe for you I'd recommend to buy at once a triple transportation(walking foot) sewing machine (pfaff, adler, juky, consew). In my opinion is the best option to do upholstery (car and furniture). The machine with 'roller foot' are mostly used on shoemaking. But, of course, it can be used to do upholstery but, with some limitations. I used to work with this kind of machines many years ago. www.ebay.com/itm/Roller-Foot-Plate-Feeder-Set-for-Industrial-Single-Neddle-to-sew-leather-/272328744094
Since I'm a JW I do volunteer work and just want to do some side work on seat covers. If i can get the 241-12 for $250 complete, I can buy a walking foot head and use the base with motor from the 241-12. Save me some money and have an extra head. Whole machines are expensive used. Thanks for the help and all the videos.
I was able to get the 241-12 for $250. it is very clean in the oil drop pan and has a nice heavy duty table/motor included. and I do mean heavy. plan to make the improvements to it you suggested. and keep my eye out for a walking foot head to put on it later. what is the best oil to use in the sump? I had to discard the oil to disassemble the machine to get it home. And i must say your upholstery work is superior! thanks again, David
hi cechaflo, your videos are the best, i aspire to be a competent self taught upholsterer if possible. i am wondering what would be a good sowing machine to buy for beginner, tools to get started to have some fun at home :) thanks alot for your great support !
TRy to buy an industrial sewing machine from the beginning. There are different well known trade marks in the after market...it could be new or used. pfaff1245, 145; juki lu-563, consew296-rb1, durkopp&adler 767, 291;singer, etc. Do you need a wood table to unroll and do the traces and cuts of your material ( 1.40x2 mts approx)...it can be the measure of a 1 inch thick plywood. A pair of scissors, pliers, a square, a one meter ruler, another longer 2 meters; and some other basic tools.

Yes it is possible. It is matter of getting accustomed to it. You could fix welting pipe all around a cover. the making of foamed pleats too.
Hi Sir I have developed an issue with my 45k1, I sew through 3 pieces of veg tan`in total 12mm thick `I notice that it will stitch a straight line on top` But when I take the piece away and look underneath the stitching has veered of the line by 8mm within 2" length of stitching .I am using a NM 200/25 LEATHER NEEDLE, should this needle cope with this thickness of leather,
+wow dude Hi there, it seems that your sewing machine is very powerful...these machines are mostly used by shoemakers and saddlery artisans...I really do not know much about this field to give precise opinions...sorry.
+Boniface Gatimu I think so, as mentioned if the machine is 'all metal' (those old singer are excelent)...I remember I did car upholstery with my mom's sewing machine with no motor, just a pedal moved by my feet back and forth...most of these machines come with the 'round foot' and are used by shoemakers...it's matter of doing the little adjustments to do a heavier job.
+Boniface Gatimu, the circular rollers are small as a penny coin and larger than a dime and dollar coin... check these links:www.amazon.com/Singer-Sewing-Machine-Roller-Presser/dp/B008MNXH5C www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xroller+foot+sets+juki+consew+singer+leathert+12264+12267.TRS0&_nkw=roller+foot+sets+juki+consew+singer+leathert+12264+12267&_sacat=0
Hello, Not a new knife!...not at all!...imagine that (lol) It was a useless knife. Thanks do much for watching this vide! Welcome to the channel anytime!
This machine is really strong and durable. It is made to last more than a lifetime. I have one so I can confirm this.Thank again. Bless you.
Thank you Cesar for taking your time to make this video for novices like myself.
Excellent as always. I've just started sewing with very old singer 96k 1940 machine and find your video's a great help.

Hi Miguel,
I am going to try to answer all of your questions.
1. The common size to do upholstery is the 'standard polyester thread 138' for a needle size 18(110) to 22(14); a thicker thread can be used to do 'on top stitches', also polyester number 207 for a needle 22(140) to 23(160)
2. Regarding the best contact cement, we have two, one that is applied by hand with a brush or spatula and the other very fluid applied with a painting gun...about trade marks, I cannot recommend, because, I am in Mexico, and suppose you are in USA.
I use a yellow glue which comes in cans or bottles...check these links if you are in USA :
www.homedepot.com/p/DAP-32-fl-oz-Weldwood-Original-Contact-Cement-00272/100125525
www.tandyleather.com/en-usd/home/department/leather-cement-glue/2525-360.aspx
www.ebay.es/itm/Petronios-Master-All-Purpose-Cement-Glue-Shoe-Repair-Adhesive-Glue-4-oz-/291064753112
Do a test beforehand trying out one of these products.
3. The common stitch in upholstery is 5 mm...it could be 6 mm or on the contrary 4 mm
4. We can do upholstery with 'an industrial, simple transportation, regular sewing machine' but, it would be better to sew heavy materials with an 'industrial, triple transportation/walking foot, sewing machine'...the feet compound help us to defeat/overpass bulky parts of material.
Hope it helps,
Cesar

As far as I know most of them can be. We should change three accesories: presser foot, needle plate and feed dog.

At a local supplier. But, you could look them up on ebay : www.ebay.com/bhp/singer-241

+alibabafurball I really do not know if the needle plates for singer machines are same size.
Good luck my friend!
Cesar
Very nice video.
Gracias por ver los videos!
When you set the roller to the feed dog. You mentioned the feed dog has to be hidden below the plate. When the feed goes back up,should the roller height be set to the point where you cant spin the roller easily by hand ? Or should it be firmly set to the height where the feed dog will spin it.
Hopefully this video is useful to understand much better how the height of a presser foot (roller or flat) is done
ua-cam.com/video/_QHSX8rXIXo/v-deo.html
Your Videos are very helpful! I do knot know if you mention this elsewhere but in general, what brand/needles do you use for leather? It is very difficult to look on the internet and figure what will work for the 641-12. Also do you think the roller foot would help with sewing fur? Specifically sheep fleece sewing onto very heavy backing. Duck or felt.
Thank you for your help. Looking forward to modify my machine!
you're a gentleman

thanks cesar for the advice. i like to invest in a used sawing machine and keep my eyes open for a used 1 on ebay. the one you mentioned sounds good to me. seeing how much experience and knowledge you have . i enjoy your channel. there is one question why dont you talk in your video's. is it down to all the different languages etc.
Yes, I think English is at this moment the 'universal language'. I do not speak because I still need more practice and I don't want my users to be guessing what I'm saying. My native language is Spanish.
Gracias
Dear Cesar, Thanks to you I have carried out the conversion of this exact machine (except for the large needle adaptations) to sew light weight leather. Can yoi say why the upper thread frays and breaks when it tries to sew three layers of skived leather? thank you.
Perhaps, when the needle passes the layers of leather bends a little and could be rubbing the plate hole. It would be necessary to change the needle plate with a hole lightly bigger. Besides, check out if the 'hook point' of shuttle is not rubbing the needle.
Please,let me know what happened.
Welcome to this channel anytime!
Hello, I'd forgotten to mention the 'presser foot'. If it is misaligned could cause the fraying issue due to rubbing of the needle and thread.
The video is great!! I have two Singers 251-21 and a 251-11, Can either of these machines be adapted like the one in the video? they both look similar to yours.
Yes, you could do the same adaptations to the mentioned machines.

The ideal machine to do upholstery is a double or triple transport sewing machine (walking foot) ua-cam.com/video/zHZpMBBC4Zc/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/U3HBXBDDKoo/v-deo.html
Hi there,
What number of thread are you using for upholstery? What thread size can you recommend for outdoor backpaks? Thank you
Hola.

The needle plate is for the Singer machine. These plates have different gauges for the needle holes and kind of feed dogs.

Caesar, I wish I could afford one of the machines you recommend but they are just beyond my means. What are your thoughts on a Sailrite Standard? Maybe something comparable in price? I LOVE your videos by the way!!! Really inspiring! I just need to be able to afford to get into the game!!!
The ideal sewing machine to do upholstery is an industrial, flat bed, single needle, triple transport (walking foot) sewing machine.
ua-cam.com/video/U3HBXBDDKoo/v-deo.html
New ones are very expensive.

Merci beaucoup

Thank you. Great information I was getting ready to order a roller foot. What size would you suggets

Thank you very much
@@donaldroberts6452 You are very welcome, Donald!
im finding your videos really helpful....but do you have any on doing a service on an industrial machine please ...i.e. a full oil flush and change....thank you
I do not have that video yet...sorry.
Cechaflo a service video would be awesome. Would pay money for that :-)
Hi, I have been following your tutorials for some time and I learn something new on every single one of them, thank you for taking the time to teach us how to use the machines, God bless you!
Jose.
Hi there, I’m trying to find the link to know where to find this roller/wheel presser foot for my singer 281?
www.amazon.com/Kunpeng-Singer-Sewing-Machine-Roller/dp/B0777KSMFS
Hi! I want to set up my 1291 pfaff with a roller but can't get the parts from the rep here. Any clue were I could source them from?
+karwork, I think you have to look for a 'sales representative' in/near the place where you are, in order to get an 'original piece'...these 'roller feet' have very 'small rolling balls' in the central rotation balls.
If you contact these places, maybe could get the required piece or some information at least:
www.advancedsewing.com/usedsewingmachines/pfaff.html
www.tekin-online.com/en/
+karwork get it from ebay
Can you advise were you purchased your roller foot for 241-12? Thanks

This is great
Pls I learnt this round foot has size, which size is this
1" inch wide.
i can hear the clutch motor in the background but find it incredible how slow you can sew with this machine what is the rpm of that motor is it 1750 or the high sped 3500
This clutch motor is 3450 RPM . BTW, I already sold this machine.
And i must say your upholstery work is superior! thanks again, David
hi cechaflo, your videos are the best, i aspire to be a competent self taught upholsterer if possible. i am wondering what would be a good sowing machine to buy for beginner, tools to get started to have some fun at home :)
thanks alot for your great support !
A pair of scissors, pliers, a square, a one meter ruler, another longer 2 meters; and some other basic tools.

it sure is ! finally am starting ! will keep your advice in mind ! thankyou so much for your videos !
Hi, can welt with this foot? Or do a raised foam stitch for car upholstery?
Yes it is possible. It is matter of getting accustomed to it. You could fix welting pipe all around a cover. the making of foamed pleats too.
There are some limitations but car and furniture upholsterers used this kind of presser foot to sew anything related to upholstery.

Hello Cechaflo!Love your videos, most informative. What carpet was sewn? I have a Pfaff 145. Will it sew carpet? Many thanks.
+Jess Morgan I've sewn automotive carpet...it's soft. You have an industrial sewing machine, very powerful, heavy duty...you can sew carpet and more heavy materials.
Thanks for following us on you tube!
+Cechaflo Hi cesar dumb question what sisors u use to cut the material on the video they make the triangle edges what are they called thanks Ray
+Ray Solis, Hi Ray, I think you're referring to the 'zigzag scissors' mostly used by taylors when they work on fabrics to avoid the fraying on its edges. I use it on the tutorials 'to simulate' the whole material (vinyl/leather/fabric) was cut and continue to the sides.

Hi Sir I have developed an issue with my 45k1, I sew through 3 pieces of veg tan`in total 12mm thick `I notice that it will stitch a straight line on top` But when I take the piece away and look underneath the stitching has veered of the line by 8mm within 2" length of stitching .I am using a NM 200/25 LEATHER NEEDLE,
should this needle cope with this thickness of leather,
+wow dude Hi there, it seems that your sewing machine is very powerful...these machines are mostly used by shoemakers and saddlery artisans...I really do not know much about this field to give precise opinions...sorry.
Many thanks for this informative video. Can this modification be done to any standard sewing machine? Regards
