At first I did not like that there was no talking in your video. But very shortly after watching a few I found that it is much easier to learn this way. There are no distracting attempts to explain what I am seeing, and by demonstrating the entire process I can think through the why and how of what I am seeing instead of trying to keep up with heavy editing to save time. The piping is just an ornament. In fact, it would not protect the thread from getting dirt. Thanks for watching these mute videos (lol)! You are welcome anytime!
I have never tried a waxed cotton thread on a car interior. I am going to find out about these threads. I have only used thick waxed threads on steering-wheels (baseball and cross stitches) Most of the upholsterers use 'polyester threads' which are durable and moisture resistant. www.thethreadexchange.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=TTE&Category_Code=polyester-thread

Congratulations Mr.Cechaflo, you are a perfectionist ! Impressive work. My name is Bris, and I am about to start a business on leather handbags. Could you please give me a suggestion on what machine model I should purchase, I would really appreciate your advise. Thank you so much!
Hello Bris, I could advise the ideal machine for handbags is a 'cylinder bed/arm, walking foot sewing machine' Some of these machines come with an extra portable wood table to get a flat bed if necessary. It means there would be two machines in one. ua-cam.com/video/CsdyhRPkrAk/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/J6LnRibewuc/v-deo.html

Hi Cechaflo. First off, fantastic videos. I've watched a few of them fully, and they're very educational. I have a question, though. What type of leather do you use? I've been contemplating working with leather to spice up my car, but I'm very unsure as to what type of leather I should use. Could you help? Thank you!
You need to use pigmented/embossed chrome tanned leather for your car interior! This the type of leather the automotive industry mostly uses. It’s very soft and pliable
Hi Cesar. Great video. What is your preferred stich length for the french seams and what thread thickness do you use, V92 or V138? Btw I think the yellow on grey looks fantastic.
For furniture 8 to 10 mm long. For car seats 6 mm. Dashboards, door panels, consoles, etc. 3 to 4 mm long. Sometimes, I use 92 thread size and for some other jobs 138. Thanks for watching the videos!
Ola Cechaflo, gracias por todo. I have been watching your videos for several months and am blessed to have found someone as artistic as you are, I have a question about the quality of the leather and how to shop for some. I live in New York and I am brand new at this, but confident because of your teachings. How would I be able to find inexpensive leather, through Ebay? and also the thick strings that you use, what do you call them? Thank you so much in advance Cechaflo
+chris diaz Thanks for kind remarks! ... Thi is a link in case you need small pieces of upholstery leather: www.tandyleather.com/en/product/premium-upholstery-pieces Besides you could get different products used to do leather craft...I don't know about ebay...sorry. As for threads, I use 'polyester thread' to do upholstery...check this interesting link that shows different kind of threads and for different purposes, car upholstery, canvas, clothes, etc. thethreadexchange.com/
so amazing, I am planning on customizing a 1975 MB 450sl. I want to change the colors and to a more like newer Bentley feel with some of its original style. I'm also planning on doing some woodwork to give its some of that current feel to it, without your videos I would be a little scared, but now I am up for the challenge. thank you thank you thank you amigo!!!!
Camera should pan out to show how you move the wheel with your right hand. Secondly, since you don't speak in any of your videos you should leave the posted commentary on thre screen long enough to read it.
One other thing I wanted to ask was about the core material you use for the piping. I have used pre-made piping which is OK in most cases but for precise color match you need to make the piping. All I can find for piping core is either foam or cloth which doesn't hold up well. The material you used appears to be a solid plastic, exactly what is it? Thanks again for your responses. Joe
Hi there. Awesome video! Could you tell me what sort of leather and other materials you are using please and could I do this on a singer 31-20 treadle machine?
I am using 'automotive leather material' on top and as a 'foamed backing' or reinforcement below 'headliner material 1/4" thick'. For the 'first sewings or closing sewings' I have used a needle 110=18 with thin standard upholstery thread number 92. To do the ornamental sewings on top (double stitches and over sewing) I have used a thicker thread 138 with a thicker needle 140=22. The 'plastic pipe' is 3 mm thick. Thanks for watching these videos!
Great video! Many helpful tips. What was the needle and thread size that was used to sew the piping? The French seam had a much heavier thread and needle, piping was much smaller, what did that use? Thanks, Joe
+Bayareahotrods I use the standard polyester upholstery thread and needle (120=19) to do the 'closing sewing'...you get very tight seams...it avoids too big holes a needle leaves in the material and clashing views of thread through the seams after the sewing. The double stitches on top can be done with smae thread size and needle or if you want a thicker thread a 140=22 needle size is OK. A 140=22 needle size could be used for both procedures...it is a standard measure and not too thick.
ua-cam.com/video/dxvOfvmDuFc/v-deo.html I used a very thin vinyl in this demonstration. There is no specific material that can be used as backing. It could be fabric canvas, a thin stiff vinyl it the sewing are going to be straight. Thin elastic vinyl if I would sew rounded edges, celestra, etc.
Very nice work only if people see that and do everything themselves, it would be nice if they do not show everything the market, because we also work in the same profession and want to continue our business.
Greetings: I noticed that you use two different weights of thread: one for sewing the pieces together and another heavier weight for the 'accent' stitches. I will be using this kind of seam on standard upholstery fabric and would like to know, if you would please, the brand, type and weights of the thread and also what needle sizes? I have a Consew Portable Industrial walking foot machine. Thanks so much for sharing your time and skills with us. Much appreciated. ..... Fred
I'm located in Mexico and sizes have different denomination. If you're located in USA it seems to me the thin basic upholstery thread corresponds to number 92 and the thicker one is 138. The threads should be polyester. www.thethreadexchange.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=TTE&Category_Code=polyester-thread If you are going to sew light fabrics with thin upholstery thread a 110=18 needle size would be ok. A 120=20 needle size would be right for medium fabrics.
Thank you, Cesar, for your reply. I agree with so many others who have benefitted from your videos. Your 'pictures' are worth a thousand words, and more.... Fred
Frederick Thompson I'd go with a 96 poly if your machine can handle a 138 or 207 those work great for accent top stitching but when you get into heavier threads timing on the machine may have to be adjusted.
Thank you, Andy. The gent who sold me my Consew industrial machine has since told me that 96 thread was the heaviest it could handle. Nice to have your confirmation. I'm thinking that I might need to go with a contrasting color to give me the 'accent' I'd like. Thank you for taking the time.... Regards, Fred
+Cordell Longtine if you refer to the 'ribbon/strip' backing of french seams I use... it is a thin vinyl. A canvas fabric, denim material can also be useful...at the upholstery suppliers, we could find the ribbons ready.
Cesar how are you love your videos.i have a question on needles . What type of needle you use for leather and what type for Vinyl and by type I mean needles points . Thanks in advance Ray
Hi Ray, I use the same needle size for leather and vinyl...wedge point. If you use a standard thread 92 to do upholstery a 120=19 needle size would be ok...a 140=22 also works good for heavier materials and for thicker threads such as 207. You are welcome!
Hello!! Wonderful Channel And Knowledge, I would like to ask if I can use a regular Singer machine to do this wonderful work? What kind of thread, needle, and the piece in the machine I need?
Yes, a regular sewing machine could be useful to do some upholstery work. Although with some limitations it is possible. The ideal machine to do upholstery is a 'triple transportation/walking foot, industrial sewing machine'. I have some videos that show a regular Singer sewing machine adapted to do upholstery : ua-cam.com/video/V_IYfp7zBfI/v-deo.html As for the needle, it is advisable the use of sizes from 18=110, 20=120 to 140=22. 'Polyester threads to do upholstery come from 092 to138 (standards) www.thethreadexchange.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=TTE&Category_Code=polyester-thread
Hi Ray, please, check these useful links which show the 'wedge point needle' Groz Beckert needles for industrial sewing machines: www.hobkirk.co.uk/groz-beckert-134lr-leather-sewing Check the parts of a needle: textileapex.blogspot.mx/2014/09/sewing-needle-construction.html Check the points of a needle: www.zentiz.com/different-types-of-needles-for-different-fabric/ About the size or thickness (american or singer and european or metric) 90(metric)=14(singer) 110=18 120=19 140=22 160=23 180=24 200=25 I hope it helps, Thanks for watching the videos!
+John Woolfrey Hello John, It's a 4 mm thick foam...a 1/4" thick foam is better, because it gives more 'body'...I have used what I've had at hand...it's headliner material.
Hi, what foam thickness would you recommend for leather ? I started my upholstery using 2cm foam because the pleats looked great with this thickness, but it makes the covers extremely hard to sew and even harder to manipulate since it's so stiff.
+SuperDuty455 Half of an inch foam thickness is the standard measure...for the other additional panels, it can be used a thinner 1/4" foam. If you're constantly dealing with heavy leathers, it's advisable a thick needle...a 140=22 or a 160=23 are OK. To do an easier sewing is advisable to skive the strips of leather to do the piping (half the size...no much)
+Khaled Khaled (translation)Very sophisticated work. Answer: Just basics to understand real upholstery projects in a near future...Thanks for watching!

GM "mini perf" vinyl DOES tear easily. But it's so perforated it's barely holding on.

You are welcome anytime!
I have never tried a waxed cotton thread on a car interior. I am going to find out about these threads.
I have only used thick waxed threads on steering-wheels (baseball and cross stitches)
Most of the upholsterers use 'polyester threads' which are durable and moisture resistant.

Which model of sewing machine do you use? Thanks 👍I am interested in upholstery and car seat repair. The clips are great for you, go ahead!
I am using a Pfaff 1245-706/47 triple transport sewing machine.

Beautiful work 😊
Thanks for kind remarks!
It’s very soft and pliable
maravilla de vídeo. saludos!
Gracias por esta nueva lección. Que calibre de hilo esta usando ?
polyester thread 138 www.thethreadexchange.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=nylon-thread-138
Hola estoy aprendiendo a costurar y contigo e aprendido quiero aprender hacer los steering wheel like you
Muchas gracias por apreciar estos videos!
great job bro, Where can I buy that neon/green thread from and what kind thread is it? pls
Hello ,I was wondering if you were using a real pfaff walking feet or the cheaper Chinese versions ? Thanks
Excelente maestro!
What kind of material do you use, and where do you find, that goes behind the French seam?
I am using a thin canvas. It also could be a thin vinyl. Just cut the required strips...2 cm or 1 inch wide
+chris diaz Thanks for kind remarks! ... Thi is a link in case you need small pieces of upholstery leather: www.tandyleather.com/en/product/premium-upholstery-pieces
Besides you could get different products used to do leather craft...I don't know about ebay...sorry.
As for threads, I use 'polyester thread' to do upholstery...check this interesting link that shows different kind of threads and for different purposes, car upholstery, canvas, clothes, etc.

so amazing, I am planning on customizing a 1975 MB 450sl. I want to change the colors and to a more like newer Bentley feel with some of its original style. I'm also planning on doing some woodwork to give its some of that current feel to it, without your videos I would be a little scared, but now I am up for the challenge. thank you thank you thank you amigo!!!!
+chris diaz Take up the challenge! ...we'd like to see the outcome!
Joe
+Bayareahotrods Hello Joe, It's a piping tube 3 mm ...check this link (from Hog Ring Forum): www.dltcorporation.com/category_s/41.htm
thanks for sharing
You're welcome!
good ..good...good
Great work !
Thanks for watching!
beautiful 😍
can you tell me what kind of fabric did you use under!?
thank you very much
I used 'car headliner material' which comes bonded with 5mm foam and thin cloth.
Thanks for watching the video!
Welcome to the channel anytime!
Bonjour Monsieur merci beaucoup
You are welcome.
Thanks for watching these videos!
+Cechaflo Thanks for the quick reply. I enjoy watching your videos.
+Bayareahotrods You are welcome!
Hi Ceaser, what is the 1" strip of backing cloth you are using. What is it called?
ua-cam.com/video/dxvOfvmDuFc/v-deo.html I used a very thin vinyl in this demonstration.
The threads should be polyester.
www.thethreadexchange.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=TTE&Category_Code=polyester-thread
If you are going to sew light fabrics with thin upholstery thread a 110=18 needle size would be ok.
What do you use for the basting material?? You are a master, thanks for your videos!
+Cordell Longtine if you refer to the 'ribbon/strip' backing of french seams I use... it is a thin vinyl. A canvas fabric, denim material can also be useful...at the upholstery suppliers, we could find the ribbons ready.
OK, thank you. Keep up the good Work!
+Cordell Longtine You are welcome!
What presser foot attachments you used in this video sir?
3 kind of foot: piping foot, standard foot and zipper foot.
I have some videos that show a regular Singer sewing machine adapted to do upholstery : ua-cam.com/video/V_IYfp7zBfI/v-deo.html
As for the needle, it is advisable the use of sizes from 18=110, 20=120 to 140=22. 'Polyester threads to do upholstery come from 092 to138 (standards) www.thethreadexchange.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=TTE&Category_Code=polyester-thread
Thank You very much

Thanks for watching the videos!
Cechaflo. What Size Piping cord and neon green thread are you using? Thank you
3mm piping cord and thread size 138
Thanks for watching the video!
Hi Cesar, are you using 1/4" foam in this video? Thanks, John
+John Woolfrey Hello John, It's a 4 mm thick foam...a 1/4" thick foam is better, because it gives more 'body'...I have used what I've had at hand...it's headliner material.
me gustaría saber dónde compro sus máquinas
Hi, what foam thickness would you recommend for leather ? I started my upholstery using 2cm foam because the pleats looked great with this thickness, but it makes the covers extremely hard to sew and even harder to manipulate since it's so stiff.
+SuperDuty455 Half of an inch foam thickness is the standard measure...for the other additional panels, it can be used a thinner 1/4" foam. If you're constantly dealing with heavy leathers, it's advisable a thick needle...a 140=22 or a 160=23 are OK.
To do an easier sewing is advisable to skive the strips of leather to do the piping (half the size...no much)
+Cechaflo as it is called the machine to reduce skin ?
+Khaled Khaled (translation)Very sophisticated work.
Answer: Just basics to understand real upholstery projects in a near future...Thanks for watching!
