  • We recently got to catch up with my friend Jesse Smyth of the Stubborn Nail who showed us around her (Super Secret) Speakeasy, made us a few drinks and chatted with us about how she got started in Bartending, how she had to immediately pivot her business due to COVID, what she's doing now, and what the future holds. For you longtime Barfly viewers, the Stubborn Nail will be familiar to you. Jesse graciously allowed us to film episodes there while my own kitchen was under construction and we had no space.
I met Jesse while we were both bartending at a bar in the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District called Tony's Saloon. It really took no time at all for us to be thick as thieves and really have some pretty Rip Roaring weekend nights behind the bar. Jesse went on to work at some of the best bar programs in the city, was a Bombay Most Imaginative Bartender finalist and it's been really cool to watch her define her own unique cocktail style. And I am not kidding when I say that each and every drink she conceives is goddamned delicious!
If you want to check out Jessie’s awesome business and all the great things she’s doing, you can check that out here:

Back in days before Leandro leaned how to smile. The bar with the garden, what a one two punch.

I always wondered why there was such a different bar in the early barfly videos! Deeply satisfying video, and a very well shot and edited mini-documentary!!

Most excellent! When I was first watching, I thought that bar was Cole's. But then I went to Cole's (Leandro wasn't there, unfortunately), so I knew it wasn't. I've always wondered where it was so this is great to know.
And that garden! Oh my, oh my! That's an inspiration!!
So........ What's the password? How does one wrangle an invitation? I can drive south easily enough, lol! ♥️

Dude you have to do more of this type of content. I think there would be a lot of appeal for professionals and non-professionals, for these mini doc type films going into the human side of bar tending.

Great video/story. While I’m not a trained bartender, I can certainly hold my own as a home bartender, and love to host friends for cocktails. I even purposefully have reduced the amount of beers I used to have to focus more on cocktails. Great space!

OMG, yes, lemon verbena is the forking best. I actually didn't want this to end as soon as it did.
A bit funny to give the ratios for the drinks, but not for the house ingredients. It's like "Here's how to make this drink! Oh, except you need to experiment to get the key ingredient right, and you have no idea how it should taste." 🤨 Any chance of some ratios/measurements on those?

    Speaking about Speak easy bar
I love wearing leather coats and suits and hats because I love dressing like a original gangster Mobster from the movies
And I like wearing leather coats because they're was a UK show called most haunted yvette fielding from the show used to wear leather coats and wearing leather coats are the real clothes that makes me happy
Bam always crying because I always get bulled and laughed i have been bulled all my life since childhood because I was always different even when I used wear normal clothes but I don't want to wear normal clothes even if I did dress normal I will find it hard to cry because no one is bothering and that's why I would dress normal so that no one bothers me for wearing leather coats
I guest love wearing leather coats and suits.
    I love her home bar

Guys I need help ! I am getting into the world of cocktail crafting and therefore, bitters. The only thing is that I don’t find Angostura Bitters not even the basic one… But I often the brand « Fee Brothers » is it roughly the same thing if I take their « old fashioned bitters » ?

    • @margefoyle6796

Have you tried Amazon? It may have to do with where you live and what their shipping rules are.
Fee Brothers, well delicious, is not at all the same. Angostura and all other bitters that I'm aware of have a high alcohol base, but Fee Brothers do not.
