    Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
    Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
    The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
    We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

    When I was little and found out none of the fictional characters my parents taught me to believe in are real, I assumed God was in that category too. It was only when I started going to catechism and other religious teachings, I made the mistake of telling the class that God was not real bc of the other lies my parents told me. It did not go over well.

      I was the same way. My dad read to us at bed time and would read the bible, the lord of the rings, the wizard of oz series. It wasn't until i was about 7 or 8 when i realized people actually thought the bible was real.

      When I was 5 or 6 years old, my parents gave me books about Aesop’s fables, Mother Goose stories, Fairy tales, etc., and almost all of those stories had talking animals. I asked my Dad if animals can really talk, and he told me that it was make-believe (which I later labeled Suspended disbelief). I put those books on my make-believe shelf, along with Mickey Mouse, Peter Rabbit, and Winnie the Pooh. One day my well-meaning but deluded Presbyterian grandmother gave me a book of Bible stories for children. In the very first story, I found a talking snake. That book went straight to the make-believe shelf, where it has remained for over 65 years.

    vish here, thanks for having me on this call! I get that Atheist calls are generally boring and get less time so one thing I wanted to elaborate on that we didn't have time for was the hatefulness between hindus and muslims. Obviously not a blanket statement but at least because of my family I ended up losing a lot of friends in my early childhood just because my parents wouldnt let me play with them because their family were muslim. This kind of shit ends up just breeding unfounded internalized hate when a CHILD from a Muslim family doesn't know what a hindu is and vice versa and just wanna freakin play with the other kids in the neighborhood...

      Thank you for sharing., We hear a lot from christians and muslims, but other religions, not so much, I found it very interesting, and I am so sorry you had to go through that.

      Hi Vish, thank you for calling. That's an excellent question and you are very welcome to call back to ask it this week.
      As I said on the show it's great having someone call in with non Christian subjects to discuss.

    Genuine question: are there any medical benefits to circumcision?

    • @meloveAi
      @meloveAi 29 днів тому +5

      There is a condition where the foreskin cannot stretch enough and essentially strangles/squeezes the glans when erect. So there's at least one situation where it provides a benefit, since as far as I know that condition (had to search it up, phimosis/paraphimosis) would cause a lot of pain and discomfort.

    • @Finckelstein
      @Finckelstein 29 днів тому +5

      Not really. As the other commenter said, it can be helpful in the case of phimosis, but that affects a tiny fraction of people. And it can be done retroactively on patients instead of proactively on all toddlers.

      I've heard that it reduces sensitivity down there, so it can help people with premature ejeculation. But anyway, it should be only done on consenting adults, not children who cannot choose for themselves.

      I believe in rare instances, however, it probably `did` have positive medical benefits in 1300 BC. Perhaps even up to modern times, but given advances in medical science and understanding, it's an unnecessary procedure these days, and a religious tradition that should end.

    • @jns8393
      @jns8393 26 днів тому

      @meloveAi Paraphimosis is more likely to be an emergency situation and requires urgent medical intervention, though not so often circumcision, see below. Phimosis isn't a critical condition can often be treated with the application of a topical steroid cream.
      In both cases if conservative intervention not successful a dorsal slit circumcision may be sufficient rather than a full, tight one.

    I think my problem with this whole atheism thing is that atheists don't seem to have any agreement amongst themselves as to what is morally right or wrong.

    • @noellelavenza494
      @noellelavenza494 29 днів тому +8

      Neither do theists; theistic religions disagree on a lot, and even within Christianity there's a ton of disagreement and "creative" interpretation of scripture.

    So religion does harm because X person's family branded him in some local ritual which has nothing to do with the majority of Hinduism. Further, the guy is upset that his family lied about Santa. I would be more upset about parents introducing their kids to drugs in the US which actually harms their personality and their lives.

    • @Nocturnalux
      @Nocturnalux 29 днів тому +1

      So because you dismiss his parents brand of hinduism , his parents religion did NOT harm him, and therefore no religion is harmful?,
      He was , as a child, upset that he was lied to, what a terrible thing to do, not be ok with lies:P
      And who gives a shit about what YOU would find better or worse.,. this wasnt about you.

    • @brownmasterv
      @brownmasterv 29 днів тому +2

      Dunno what parents are introducing their kids to drugs in the states but they're shit parents if they are regardless of what country. And this branding shit I went through is not just a local one but pretty sure applies to an entire sect of Hinduism which is quite large. The location was local . Also I'm not sure what this comparison even states - child abuse is child abuse and this IS specifically a Hindu practice based on its religious bullshit.

    • @gamingdragon1356
      @gamingdragon1356 29 днів тому

      @@brownmasterv I searched google but I didn't find anything of this branding practice as such some fringe practice doesn't define any religion. Most people voted for legalizing cannabis in the united states. Its a fact. Further, a Hindu family supporting Santa myth for the happiness of the child is a good thing.

    • @gamingdragon1356
      @gamingdragon1356 29 днів тому

      @@Goldenhawk583 Yes, a fringe practice doesn't define any religion. Atheist don't accept the atrocities committed by Russia China as the harm done by atheism.
      Why do atheist always get triggered by the Santa myth so much?
