My mother believes these two things simultaneously so let me explain the thought process here: these people don't think psychology is real because they don't think anything in the brain is caused naturally. They think everything is either demons or God. They think different psychological phenomena (among other things) are different types of demons. Autism is a type of demon to these people. Vaccines are basically demon dispensers.
Other things that they think are caused by demons include: illness, pain, poverty, negative emotions, being gay, being trans, being a dick, doubt/unbelief, any temptation to do anything that is against God's plan for you (usually this mean going to college)

I believe these people have lost trust in late stage capitalism, this is a symptom of the system because it creates snake oil salesmen. They can sell you anything and as long as you're convinced it will be something new for you and get those endorphins in your brain going and makes you feel good you'll believe it.
Science isn't easy, it's a complicated, nuanced and heavily debated topic that requires a person to understand lots of different fields of study and sometimes mathematics.
That means if you actually want to do more than just read a pamphlet in a hospital you have to go online and research it. The problem is nobody is going out and reading medical journals and actual reports from scientists directly.
Instead it's easier to have the algorithm feed you information instead so you can be sold lies, you'll buy your antivax t-shirts and it's just frustrating.

Love the way you two walked this woman through her presentations of fallacies and superstitions with open hands. In particular, it felt VERY validating that you chose to start with the conversation with the "vaccines causing autism" conspiracy, because as an autistic person, that sh*t is dangerous. I'm sure most of the people commenting in here will recognize that this both conflates AND stigmatizes the experience of the condition, with completely unrelated (and necessary) preventative medical treatment.
Plus I just find it infuriating attempting to talk sense into these types myself, given I recognize I'm biased - in that I always get this inkling that they view my experience of the world as an overall negative - feeding into the larger narrative that we need to be "fixed" or "cured" - or in this case avoided in a superstitious sense, which is just... downright insulting. Thanks guys. ❤

My child is autistic. Through her diagnosis, I realized that I and many in my family are undiagnosed adults, because they didn't have the diagnostic tools/understanding they have now.
And here's the thing: the most obvious autistic traits tend to emerge between 18 months and 3yrs old. Yes that's when they get a lot of vaccines, but the same is true in unvaccinated children. They've done so many studies comparing vaccinated to unvaccinated, and they've found that autism occurs at the same rate in born populations.
This has been so widely debunked, that the one I've seen being pushed since I had my daughter is: if you took Tylenol when pregnant and your child is now autistic, you may be entitled to compensation." It's been five yrs, they still haven't won that case. And for the record, I really didn't take Tylenol while pregnant, I'm more an ib profin person.

Your comment really hit the nail on the head. It's like noticing how domestic violence seems to be on the rise. If you just look at the numbers, it definitely seems that way. But when you dig a bit deeper, you realize that in the past, people didn't even talk about "Domestic Abuse." Especially in more traditional or religious communities, women were expected to just deal with it. They wouldn't even consider reporting it because there wasn't anywhere to report it to. So yeah, when you only look at the reported cases, it makes it seem like violence against women is skyrocketing. But when you consider all these factors, it's not so straightforward. This totally backs up your point and I think it applies to a lot of different situations.

Maybe a far stretch, but does anyone notice when callers say before they became Christian, there was trauma or depression or whatever was going on and when a host asks how do you know and explain faith is unreasonable and unreliable, that’s when they get defensive? I know its not all the time. When it comes to depression and anxiety, when people hit their rock bottom, they want out as fast as possible and when someone finds a way to manage it, they really don’t wanna go back. I’m starting to wonder if Christians and religions people in general, are just so worried that if they realize God isn’t real, they will go right back to where they were! I can tell in Danielles voice that she dealt with a lot before, and while i feel for her and glad she got better, she took another dangerous move lol

I feel it's like how some people turn to drugs and alcohol in their lowest points. It makes them feel better so they get wrapped up in it, so many of them will fight you on it when you point out that what they are doing is bad for them or that they have a problem.
My father is a good example for most off my life he was an alcoholic who was never really there for me. I cut him of about 6 years ago just before he "found Christ". He basically swapped the bottle for the bible.

Religion, especially Christianity, prey on the most vulnerable. Drug addicts, alcoholics, prisoners, abuse victims are all extremely vulnerable and looking for anything to make themselves feel better. Religion swoops in and sells them a sense of hopefulness that numbs their pain or anxiety similar to opium.

I suffer from bipolar disorder. Without my divaloprex I have quarterly severe swings I'm both my mood and my thought processes. Mania is a condition I wouldn't wish on anybody, and the only reason I've managed to stop burning bridges and put my life together is the field of psychology. This woman would have me go back to those terrible times and life ruining issues. How can a modern person, with intelligent and capable friends, be this ignorant?

Start with flat earth. Does she have an explanation for ship's disappearing over the horizon, and why sailors think if they climb the mast they can see further. I suppose God can do magic tricks to make it look like the earth is a sphere, to test our faith in what he told us in Genesis - that it's more like a snow globe.

The problem is that fundamentalist christians tend to interpret testimony as absolute proof for anything being true, whereas any rational being will recognize that we need more than just testimonial evidence to determine what the truth of anything is.

The United States doesn’t have any territory in Antarctica.
Seven sovereign states - Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, New Zealand, Norway, and the United Kingdom - have made eight territorial claims in Antarctica. These countries have tended to place their Antarctic scientific observation and study facilities within their respective claimed territories; however, a number of such facilities are located outside of the area claimed by their respective countries of operation, and countries without claims such as China, India, Italy, Japan, Pakistan, Russia, South Africa (SANAE), Poland, and the United States have constructed research facilities within the areas claimed by other countries. There are overlaps among the territories claimed by Argentina, Chile, and the United Kingdom.

I really wish people would stop making this claim, but people do not deserve respect merely for existing. With the caveat that I'm not saying they deserve to be disrespected. They're so quick to acknowledge there's a neutral position to the god proposition but then ignore it when considering respect.

If you haven't read an entire peer reviewed paper you haven't researched anything. Whiltirr our their now it is worth noting that the premise wasn't out there 30 years ago. While I'd rather the average Joe just get their kids shots on schedule lets not cast dispersions from a perspective of superior knowledge. Read a couple dozen papers on a narrow subject and if you're a reasonable person who lacks expertise you'll reasonably conclude that there are experts who can speak on the subject better, and they're on the internet and remarkably willing to respond to emails (which is nice but probably a bad use of time). I read and read about covid and sure I can recall the papers and some bullet points but that isn't comprehension it's recall, so all I ever did in the pandemic was say here, read this or don't, lets talk about baseball nle. Most of us on any side are really going with the crowd, which is fine if it's a good crowd--making decisions based on peer beliefs and culture isn't defensible in an argument but it's not tenable to read for a hundred hours about everything. The anti-vaxxers who don't know a thing I don't know what to do with because any engagement requires a teach up that they're not inclined towards if it comes out of my mouth and they aren't going to go 10 research papers from their least favorite people. When I encounter the rare duck that does have some shreds of information then great, lets do a lit review together like a couple of psychos. But that generally goes in the same direction theist callers go--why are you accepting this, if you're a skeptic you have to be a radical skeptic but here are some and anecdotes (personal revelation). It's an equivalent waste of time with the exception that occasionally someone will accept a biological fact and great, that was worth ruining the dinner warty, woooo.
