Ardbeg 10 was my 'wow' moment whisky too! Never really liked the generic, fruity Speysiders either. You should try Mortlach and Benromach if you haven't - Speysiders with a bit of beef!

I get the rich, savory smoke that I can just nose forever but after I got accustomed to the peat (about half-way down a bottle of Lagavulin), I discovered there was a whole other level of sweet floral complexity. It really is amazing. I remember the first time I nosed an islay which was Lag 16, it smelled like straight fuel and the peat was so overwhelming I was beginning to think I just blew $90 on an unpalatable dram!
5 is the beginning of the eclipse where the cult is putting on their robes, 10 is where they're out worshipping, dark cove CR is where the robes come off and the weird things begin.....
As a scotch drinker I agree with this statement. Sometimes you want light and Sometimes you want dark. Tonight is a light night. I like the weird stuff happening. Tomorrow is another day, probably weird stuff happening but we see.
I left the empty glass I used to drink wee beastie out overnight, the next morning I thought I'd spilled scotch in the room, the glass was so fragrant.
Definitly prefer the Ten neat but the Wee Beastie makes an amazing Old Fashioned - Replace the sugar syrup with Maple and you’ve got Honey BBQ ribs in a glass! Worth a try.
I'm still exploring new areas of whiskey and I'm on an Islay kick. Bought the Wee Beastie last week and I'm digging the ride. But Ardbeg Ugeadail is still my current favorite. Cheers MB's!
I got a bottle out of curiosity, and wow! Your descriptions are very spot on. The flavors spring out on the tongue like a series of ambushes rather than slowly developing like a parade. The deeper into my glass I got the more I appreciate the scotch. It was heavy on the smoke, then the fruits and spice took over as I continued to drink with the smokiness taking a back seat while still keeping its presence start to finish. I want to try the 10 year next- but may find myself returning to the wee beastie soon as a fun beer for guys nights!
The wee beasty was my intro to ardbeg and the first whisky I got really excited over. For someone, like myself, getting into exploring whiskey the flavors are bold and distinctive and easy to find. Glad i bought a bottle to drink neat and for old fashions

The smoke on the 5 is so prominent, it conflicts with the 'sweeter' aspects of the whisky (on the nose). The 10 year on the other hand, is so much more harmonious, all the flavors are in perfect balance. And for less than $10 more for the 10 year, I'd go for the 10 year all day long and really makes me appreciate the total bargain of a dram the 10 really is. Great review, as always. Now I'm just waiting for Ralfy to get a bottle of the 5!

I find I like the wee beastie more than the 10. Brighter is a good word for it. Its more of a summer drink, because it doesn't feel as heavy. 10 year is a cold rainy day dram for me. Wee beastie is sunnier. Weird analogy, but thats what I am sticking with.

I picked up Wee Beastie about a month ago and like it a lot! Glad to know it's going to stick around in the Ardbeg lineup. If only they would bring back the Dark Cove... Those special releases are such a catch-22; they can be so great, but then become so rare/expensive.
This scotch is an affordable pleasant surprise with a nice AJ blend cigar. Stands up to a strong smoke. I taste honey and toffee along with the peat. Kudos to Ardbeg.

Anyone else feel like they half assed this one, because they had already decided that it wasn't as good as the 10? They got the part where the beastie is finished in sherry casks and the 10 isn't wrong. They talked about the "ice lord" but didn't try it with ice. Didn't try it with any water. It's almost like they are tired of Ardbeg. Still a fun episode, but seemed more about everything else except the Whisk(e)y.
Picked this up myself last month. My conclusion was the same and I prefer the 10 as well. But now that I have reached the same conclusion as the Somm independently...I know I'm ready to go to the school myself!
@@88CRoyer I've never seen that one in my area. I have had the wee beastie and the 10 year. The only other one I have seen and plan on picking up sometime is the an oa.
I was 1 of the first to enjoy this when released. Absolutely wild. Great smokey both from the glass and mouth but goes away and you can enjoy the fruit and sweet notes when swallowing. Great price too. And of course it was a staple at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games this year. (You guys should come out next year)
Got a bottle for Xmas and comparing it to the Laphroaig 10 and there's just such a stronger smoke presence in the wee beastie. I like that fine but the taste that lingers dissipates so quickly where I feel the laphroaig lingers. Not bad, by any means, but my preference is for those flavours that develop. I take a sip of Wee Beastie and get a face-full of smoke then it's gone in less than 15 secs. Laphroaig I get smoke but then sea, then brine, then the "band aid" flavour and even after 25 secs I still have new tastes showing up.
Awesome description. Laphroaig was very medicinal and like iodine the first time I had it, but I was near a campfire. Later it was smokey meaty with a brine finish.
The nose on the Wee Beastie was unmistakably nutty to me, something like Walnuts or Almonds. I also got Vanilla Icing on the nose, almost like the store-bought Betty Crocker brand icing your mom put on your childhood birthday cakes. I love this scotch.
Finally got my hands on this and Rex defined it perfectly when he said its like a kid with too much energy. Its intense and bounces from one side to the other
Had to decide between the wee beastie and an oa for my first ardbeg, just because they are the most affordable & I didn't know if I would like it so didn't want to plop down $100. I went An Oa because everything I saw said it was more cohesive, less aggressively medicinal, etc. Sounds like I made a good choice.
I hope to sample that bottle someday. I was also pleased with the nostalgia throwback to early PC games and music choices. One of the strangest things about people of our age was literally LIVING through the time of computers becoming such a huge part of how human beings interact with each other now. O_O

Haha We had similar upbringings, except my parents were cool with all of those guys. My Mom’s favorite was Janet Pascal (although Sandy Patti was right there too). I remember being in a store asking my parents for a Will Smith CD, they discussed it right there in the store and decided that “we better not.” Looking back it cracks me up.
I thought the exact same thing about the fruity sweetness of this Ardbeg. I brought it to a whisky tasting with some of my friends and after having some other Islay whisky options, this one seemed very sweet to me.
For me it's very sweet too. While others that drink it have a weird expression on there face especially while drinking it. What can I say I'm a Islay/ peat/smoky whisky lover. I don't drink anything else anymore than differend kinds of islays, and ocasionally a talisker for example that's not an Islay.

Bought a bottle of wee beastie as my first Islay. Smoke punched me in the face but man did I enjoy it had my dad try it and surprisingly he also enjoyed it as a first timer!
I never cared for whiskey. Then one of your video's inspired me to try Laphroaig... I love it. Next, I tried Ardbeg and now I understand that there is Ardbeg, and not Ardbeg.
I'm on my 2nd bottle. I much prefer the TEN. And, I agree, the smoke is ashy and reminds me of Talisker 10 where it's leaning away from campfire, and more towards ashtray. I by no means hate the Beastie, and if it weren't for the circumstances of a gift card, dollar for dollar I''ll stick with the TEN when spending my own coin.

The Wee Beastie is very smoky, but it doesn't have the intense plastic bandaid that the Ten has. What it does have is a fantastic fruit flavor. It's excellent and I prefer it to the Ten.
I'm drinking the Wee Beastie, right now. For me, It finishes a little weak, is less salty, and lacking some of the earthiness I love in the 10. The smoke from both is campfire, the 10 is more dried, mossy driftwood whereas the Wee Beastie is air-dried firewood burning by a lake. Both have great aromas, but I' not inclined to believe another 5 years would make them taste/smell the same. They seem fundamentally different.

We have all been there on the CD ha. I picked nelly country grammar at target and I told my mom he raps about cars and money. I think she knew but still bought it for me.
DMB Crash was my first CD. I was 10 years old. My uncle got me that with a Sony Boombox for my birthday. Im so found of the cd, when Im setting up a stereo its the first thing I play to set the levels.
Little addition on Kilchoman: while they don't put the age directly on the packaging, you can read most things online; Machir Bay and Sanaig I believe were somewhere between 5 and 7 years in age, and on their annual releases like the Loch Gorm it doesn't state an exact age, but from what years the casks used were, giving you a rough estimate of the ages involved. Loch Gorm 2020's youngest casks were I believe 9 years for example. The Islay Barley I believe had a date of distillation and bottling named, which is basically the most accurate statement you could get.
having just come back from Islay in the distilery Kilchoman are calling both their Machir bay and Sanaig as having a good proportion of 5 y.o. so I think you've nailed the youth of their core range
Story time. One of the things I work on is kitchen equipment at a hospital. I went on the World Wide Web searching for a manual for their steamer. The brand is “Cleveland”. You can guess what I found. Not what I had in mind. I couldn’t turn the computer off fast enough. My Co worker couldn’t stop laughing. He knew what I would find, but let me look it up anyway. Turns out the manufacture calls it a “Cleveland Range”. I can’t imagine why......
Just picked up a bottle today and am still forming an opinion. I had a quick sip in my glencairn but definetely need to have more to give my thoughts. I love islays and especially in whiskey sours so I bought this. I would get talisker 10 as I love that but don’t want to put a 70$ bottle on my wallet rn

Sounds the same for me, Lagavulin 8, early spring/summer. Lagavulin 16, fall/ winter, but, love the Ardbeg.

Got a bottle for Xmas and comparing it to the Laphroaig 10 and there's just such a stronger smoke presence in the wee beastie. I like that fine but the taste that lingers dissipates so quickly where I feel the laphroaig lingers. Not bad, by any means, but my preference is for those flavours that develop. I take a sip of Wee Beastie and get a face-full of smoke then it's gone in less than 15 secs. Laphroaig I get smoke but then sea, then brine, then the "band aid" flavour and even after 25 secs I still have new tastes showing up.
Awesome description. Laphroaig was very medicinal and like iodine the first time I had it, but I was near a campfire. Later it was smokey meaty with a brine finish.

The nose on the Wee Beastie was unmistakably nutty to me, something like Walnuts or Almonds. I also got Vanilla Icing on the nose, almost like the store-bought Betty Crocker brand icing your mom put on your childhood birthday cakes.
I love this scotch.

I get an intense bitterness with Wee Beastie in the finish. Tamed with a dash of water. Great dram for the price if you like Ardbeg!
Finally got my hands on this and Rex defined it perfectly when he said its like a kid with too much energy. Its intense and bounces from one side to the other

Had to decide between the wee beastie and an oa for my first ardbeg, just because they are the most affordable & I didn't know if I would like it so didn't want to plop down $100. I went An Oa because everything I saw said it was more cohesive, less aggressively medicinal, etc. Sounds like I made a good choice.

I hope to sample that bottle someday. I was also pleased with the nostalgia throwback to early PC games and music choices. One of the strangest things about people of our age was literally LIVING through the time of computers becoming such a huge part of how human beings interact with each other now. O_O

Haha We had similar upbringings, except my parents were cool with all of those guys. My Mom’s favorite was Janet Pascal (although Sandy Patti was right there too). I remember being in a store asking my parents for a Will Smith CD, they discussed it right there in the store and decided that “we better not.” Looking back it cracks me up.

I thought the exact same thing about the fruity sweetness of this Ardbeg. I brought it to a whisky tasting with some of my friends and after having some other Islay whisky options, this one seemed very sweet to me.
For me it's very sweet too. While others that drink it have a weird expression on there face especially while drinking it. What can I say I'm a Islay/ peat/smoky whisky lover. I don't drink anything else anymore than differend kinds of islays, and ocasionally a talisker for example that's not an Islay.

Bought a bottle of wee beastie as my first Islay. Smoke punched me in the face but man did I enjoy it had my dad try it and surprisingly he also enjoyed it as a first timer!

I never cared for whiskey. Then one of your video's inspired me to try Laphroaig... I love it. Next, I tried Ardbeg and now I understand that there is Ardbeg, and not Ardbeg.
I'm on my 2nd bottle. I much prefer the TEN. And, I agree, the smoke is ashy and reminds me of Talisker 10 where it's leaning away from campfire, and more towards ashtray.
I by no means hate the Beastie, and if it weren't for the circumstances of a gift card, dollar for dollar I''ll stick with the TEN when spending my own coin.
I've been looking forward to this review.

Finally got this Beast up here in Ontario. What a kick ass dram!
The Wee Beastie is very smoky, but it doesn't have the intense plastic bandaid that the Ten has. What it does have is a fantastic fruit flavor. It's excellent and I prefer it to the Ten.
I'm drinking the Wee Beastie, right now.
For me, It finishes a little weak, is less salty, and lacking some of the earthiness I love in the 10. The smoke from both is campfire, the 10 is more dried, mossy driftwood whereas the Wee Beastie is air-dried firewood burning by a lake.
Both have great aromas, but I' not inclined to believe another 5 years would make them taste/smell the same. They seem fundamentally different.
That’s awesome 👏. I personally think the ten is heavier on the smoke than the 5. But yeah the wee beastie is this cute little monster that scares you at first sight but then it looks harmless and that’s when it bites you in the ass 🧟

I use to think the hype around Ardbeg having a cult following was a bit harsh but after drinking the 10, I bought my cloak. I love it and now am keen as to try this Wee Beastie. I'm definitely in the Ardbeg camp rather than Lagavulin

Little addition on Kilchoman: while they don't put the age directly on the packaging, you can read most things online; Machir Bay and Sanaig I believe were somewhere between 5 and 7 years in age, and on their annual releases like the Loch Gorm it doesn't state an exact age, but from what years the casks used were, giving you a rough estimate of the ages involved. Loch Gorm 2020's youngest casks were I believe 9 years for example. The Islay Barley I believe had a date of distillation and bottling named, which is basically the most accurate statement you could get.

having just come back from Islay in the distilery Kilchoman are calling both their Machir bay and Sanaig as having a good proportion of 5 y.o. so I think you've nailed the youth of their core range

Story time. One of the things I work on is kitchen equipment at a hospital. I went on the World Wide Web searching for a manual for their steamer. The brand is “Cleveland”. You can guess what I found. Not what I had in mind. I couldn’t turn the computer off fast enough. My Co worker couldn’t stop laughing. He knew what I would find, but let me look it up anyway. Turns out the manufacture calls it a “Cleveland Range”. I can’t imagine why......
Just picked up a bottle today and am still forming an opinion. I had a quick sip in my glencairn but definetely need to have more to give my thoughts. I love islays and especially in whiskey sours so I bought this. I would get talisker 10 as I love that but don’t want to put a 70$ bottle on my wallet rn
