Classic Trailer with Offroad Design (Escapod Teardrop Trailer Tour)

  • This teardrop trailer is the best of both worlds. Lifted and rugged for off-road use. But still maintains the charm of a classic teardrop camper with a few modern updates. Teardrop trailers have not changed much since the 1940s. And that is a good thing. It is a design that made sense then and still makes sense today. Outdoor cooking and living room, indoor sleeping area, and not much more. This small camper trailer though has a handful of features that separate it from the pack of small off-road trailers. The integration of dual purpose components, birch lined interior, galvanized trailer frame, Timbren torsion suspension, the list goes on and on.

    The choice of birch is quite good for both the distribution of light but also it’s warmth. And it reminds me of any bar in Reykjavik.
    I think a securable pass-through from the galley to the cabin would be a plus.

    Since our adventure started about 2 years ago ... surprised on how many outfits have jumped into the tear/square drop game ... many focusing on the off-road and almost abandoning highway packages. Nothing like the beauty of wood!

      Yes, I’m hoping to see a return to the highway packages. In my opinion the off-road stuff is getting a bit out of hand. I think these guys do a good job of keeping it fairly traditional although it is off-road.

    In bear country it’s wise to camp in a trailer with a portable electric bear fence. The lightest out there is less than 2.5 lbs.

    Hello again Drew! Thanks as always for the video. I continue to love the idea of a teardrop trailer, and really appreciate its minimalist concept. Alas, our small self-contained Class C remains our best option, but that doesn't keep me from enjoying learning about all these teardrops. This one has a good price, too!

    I'm coming around to your views on water Drew.....just back from a camping trip at 7500' and for some reason not sure what yet, I think it was the elevation, but the on demand LP outdoor shower would not lite so no hot shower this trip or hot water at the sink :( I tested it before leaving too and was working perfect....hard to trouble shoot in the field cuz you're kind of wasting your short water supply so I always check before leaving. Simple is almost always better.

      Thank you! I think last summer was the biggest confirmation for us of how well this will work for many people. I was so excited when I committed to the idea of staying in a teardrop for over 2 months straight. Then it dawned on me “what did I just do? May is going to kill me?” Haha. But it actually turned out really well. It just confirmed to me that going simple and having a large outdoor living area is the key to a good camping experience. If you have the chance I would highly suggest renting a teardrop trailer from outdoorsy.com. You will know within three days what size of trailer is right for you.

    Another great video Drew ! Like you, I think I like the idea of water jugs -vs- the tank but do like the water heater. The Birch is a really nice look and again, like you said, gives a warmth that looks very comfortable. For what you get, the price point is not terrible. Thanks

    • @PlayingwithSticks
      @PlayingwithSticks  2 роки тому

      I like the water heater too. I’m starting to find it very useful for greasy dishes. I typically heat water during the day and keep it in a thermos for the greasy dishes. But using an on-demand water heater gives you a bit more water to work with easier throughout the day. Unfortunately I heard during all these supply chain issues that the price of Birch has really gone up. It’s making it a lot harder for people to use with home builds. I’m starting to adjust to these prices as well. Three years ago I would’ve said this was crazy. But today after understanding the market more it’s priced reasonably for what you get. As usual good to see you guys. Just seeing you on here is getting us excited for the Midwest. We just got through our first security checkpoint in northern Thailand and working our way south. With open galley cabinets if the table and cutting board are in use means the wind will be blowing dust and leaves into those areas getting on your food and other items in the cabinets. Also easier for flying insects to also get in those items. The headboard storage door has metal latches with bent out sides that you could wind up slicing the back of your head open if sliding down to lay or even boosting yourself up to sit.
    The laptop holder was a clever idea.

    you know, this is going to sound strange but, with new "curved" solar panel tech. Flexible panels, the options for solar on tear drops become really interesting.
    Picture 2 "slide outs" stacked over each other on the roof. If you aren't running with a roof rack, 1 pair of panels will be exposed to the sun in transit. Now when you stop, you can walk out, and grab a "slide out" pulling it out to crate a 3-4' awning one one side. walk to the other, and pull out that slideout for an awning there. now on each of these curved awnings, solar panels, so now at camp you have triple the solar, with 3-4 foot awnings on either side to provide rain protection, for dropping chairs.
    Now yes, the height would be low so you wouldn't be able to stand up under it drew, but for us shorter people sure, we could stand but the fact that we have a sun shelter or rain shelter now. would be useful too.
    Done on "rollers" where you roll it back in lock it, and "safety pin... then extend it lock it, and maybe put up 2 "support beams to keep it more stable in cases of snow loading. It might be interesting.

    • @PlayingwithSticks
      @PlayingwithSticks  2 роки тому

      This is genius. It’s funny because May and I keep talking about our million dollar idea that we will never pursue is to make a 270° awning with integrated solar panels. Your idea is much better. This summer I’m playing around with a CIGS flexible solar panel. Possibilities of flex are pretty endless with that thing. I’m hoping to show it on the channel this summer. What originally got me into it is that it’s more efficient in low light versus your typical silicon panels. The extra flex and less cracking is just a bonus.

      @@PlayingwithSticks just a laminated/pressure treated wooden awning, matching the curve of the roof of the camper. with the solar panels on it. Grab and pull out. it wouldn't add much height to the unit (maybe 1 to 2 inches at most).
      They don't need to be pulled out, you'd still always have 1 set of panels so if you are in a tight spot, you don't need to do it.
      But really this could be as much as 300-600w of solar access, which now becomes VERY useful for off grid, because it gives the option of running larger coolers, and/or water purifiers. which means... extending the time you can boondock.

      @@PlayingwithSticks You can get something called a Reverse Osmosis filtration system for boats... What this does is pulls in water- be it sea water, river, or lake water, runs it through a special filtration system, that purifies it, removing even the salt... and leaves you with pure drinking water.
      It really shouldn't be that hard to mount something like that... on an RV, camper, teardrop. with a hose, pump, and such. Then run a hose to the water source, and an exit hose to either the teardrops tank, or water storage (drum/can/bladder) let it run for a few hours (many units are rated in Gal/Hour so it can take some time). The big draw back in the power but if you have enough solor, rather then a generator which takes fuel.

    It is a nice trailer. I must say though, the water attachment under the step is not only a poor location but it looks like a knee-high thin piece of metal. As well as the hose going all the way up to the hot water system. And how did you like taking off the Cabinetry doors every time you wanted to get something out? I really like the thin Profile stove. The interior looks very nice. I'm wondering, have you had the chance to look at an Oregon trailer? Very basic. A couple of different styles.
    My guess is you are either home by now, or you're in route. Welcome back to the States!

    • @PlayingwithSticks
      @PlayingwithSticks  2 роки тому

      As you know I’m not a big fan of these water systems in general. And this one was no different. I came across the same issues I typically do with other trailers when I took it out. In terms of the cabinetry doors I actually found I liked it. The more teardrops I take out that have no doors at all, the more I’m starting to like that concept. But I find it looking a bit disheveled so it’s nice to be able to hide that with the removable doors. I didn’t really find an issue because you get to camp and remove it once and then you don’t put them back on until you go home. Because this galley has no pass through there was no need to close up the cabinets. And I know it’s just an aesthetic but something about how the stove looked it made the camper feel more rugged and luxurious. it was a really neat gal experience. I just wish it was a few inches shorter. We should be looking at an Oregon trailer by the end of August. I’ve had my eyes on a few Oregon trailer companies for a few years now. We are just starting on our way home. We are through security and ready to work our way down towards Bangkok. We have a long journey ahead of us but everybody’s pretty excited right now. Good to see you on here and hope all is well with you. I assume you’ve been going up in the mountains lately with all this heat.

I like the Bean better because of it's layout w/o waterlines to winterize and the fiberglass construction. But I noticed it's all man made materials while the Escapod is birch. We are also very sensitive to smells. Unfortunately the Bean Trailer that we use was a year old when we took it out. So basically it had time to vent out any gases from the resin. I have been in a lot of conversations with people who work with composites. In the past 10 years or so there of been a lot of advancements in terms of off-gassing. Basically I’ve been told it’s nothing like the canoe smell we remember of the past. Sorry I wish I could be more helpful.

    I own a 2018 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with 17" wheels but have upgraded to 37" Nitto Ridge Grappler tires. This Escapod model states that it comes with 17" wheels and 31" tires. Do you know if I could upgrade the tire size to 37" - or - would I even want to?

    • @PlayingwithSticks
      @PlayingwithSticks  2 роки тому +1

      I’m not sure how customizable Escapod Trailers are. I say this because as these teardrop manufacturers grow in size they tend to do a little less customization to stream line their processes. But typically jeep owners will ensure the tires and rims match, meaning bolt pattern. This way you’re able to carry one less spare and can swap the spare between the two. Or if you’re really hard-core like most of the people with a jeep you’re still carrying the extra spare but it just gives you one more back up. So if it was me and I was going to put this kind of money into something I would want them to be matched. Hope that helps a little.

    I have question for Drew or really anyone that knows, how do those portable refrigerators that are inside boxes on the tongue shed the heat that the refrigerators give off. Every time I have seen a review of such a frige they have made it clear that the fan on the unit must be open to air flow. So, do these boxes have airholes somewhere that I just can't see in the videos or what?

    • @PlayingwithSticks
      @PlayingwithSticks  2 роки тому

      Good question. And the answer is yes. Typically they are on the underside to allow water to drain out from all your fun toys at the campsite. Also these boxes are quite big so there’s quite a bit of air volume around the fridge as well. The vents are kind of slanted to allow water out, but to reduce road debris from coming in.

    • @PlayingwithSticks
      @PlayingwithSticks  2 роки тому +1

      Oh I also find the slats kind of nice because you can just easily broom out fine dirt and sand. Many of today’s manufacturers are adding this to the basic tongue boxes as well.

    Ok, no why am i having visions of a 15' (14 foot base) pontoon boat, single rear engine, 3' rear platform, 2' front platform. in the center a 6x10 soft side canvas popup, based on truck campers. interrior being a "center isle walkthrough with door at either end (half door that locks into a full door when popped up. )
    Helm/command station forward right, with a swivel chair, across from it on the other side of the isle, 7′ 6″ allow for a counter space, prep ara, small 2 burner propane stove, and a little sink. in the back would be a table area, with 2 couches, the table could be flipped out of the way, to allow access back to the motor and rear deck.
    The key being, the entire thing would need to be 18-20 feet trailer included. and when collapsed... no more then 6'5 high. while on the trailer. which is completly dooable.
    Oh yes, a Garage Store-able houseboat that sleeps 2+1(2). 2 on the dinette, 1-2 on a sofa behind the helm chair. if you want the sofa to fold out.
    Small family get aways on rivers and such that wouldn't require you having to pay big fee's at a port or harbor.

    Galley height could be fixed with a "tail gate step" if they had a drop down step at the rear or drop down platform. fold up against the bottom of the galley, drop down with legs. It would also get you off the mud and such if the weather isn't sunny.
    Water, its an offroad trailer, you could add on 2x Jerry can up front over the tow hitch.
    number 3, the solar panel.
    The placement of the solar panel is very bad. by putting it on the galley door like that, it means on the road it will only charge well when you are driving away from the sun. Parked with the galley up, now you have only a limited area or arc that can see the sun BUT its also shadowed or blocked by the roof rack items, and shadows over solar panels are never good.

    • @PlayingwithSticks
      @PlayingwithSticks  2 роки тому

      You always have the good solutions. Have you seen Beans cloud suspension system yet? Another great solution for that galley height. I have a feeling this type of suspension will become standard for upper end off-road teardrops. Haha. I was wondering the same thing about the panel. I never got the chance to ask, but I was assuming maybe it’s like the Bean’s panel where it can come on and off easily.

I think without upkeep they would definitely look a bit beat up, but if well-maintained these will last longer than most people will probably want to keep them around. I said that last sentence because I read a stat that said the average family will own five campers in their lifetime. That’s crazy! Any traditional wouod built teardrop for around nine to $12,000. But these don’t include quality suspension, powder coating, water tanks, stargazer windows, walk on fenders, beefed up off-road components… I could go on and on with this list.
