I love that you go over literally everything on the bike and in the bag. Usually people gloss over stuff, but I enjoy all the nerdy nitty gritty details ! great video as always !
Tan walls for me as well... Funny you said "traditional black walls"... Tan walls were there way before black walls came to be! I see the semi-integrated cables running below the stem helps a ton when packing a bike too!!!
I put the same RESERVE wheels on my gravel bike for the 500 mile RAGBRAI this year, started with GP5000 in 32c but they ballooned up to 35.5mm, so I think I will switch out to 30c tires as well to maintain at least a modicum of aero and comfort.
For the Alps, even mid-summer, always be preapred for all weathers even in the same day! It can get very cold/wet on the summits and weather can vary a lot between valleys...jacket/gloves/warmers etc all good to take...even better if you have support on the road with a van to take a day bag. Oh and spare brake pads too!! Enjoy :)
Thanks for the review. I like tan walls on my black frame bike, though all black works nicely also. Re the Reserve 40/44's, are the DT 180's with SINC ceramic ball bearings holding up well? Also, did you consider the DT240 hubs at all?
No issues with the DT 180's. These wheels were sent to me from Reserve and I'd consider the 240's or 180's if I were to buy them. I had the 240's on another wheelset and they were bulletproof for 10,000+ miles.
Great content as usual - wondering if you have any perspective on the Cannondale CX/SE? The price point is along the Cervelo Esp and think it's worth a look.
Hi Chris, I'm thinking of purchasing a Evoc Travel Bike Bag Pro but not sure if it works with my bike. I use ENVE Melee with 56 size, same as the one you used to have. May I hear your opinion if they fit? I am worried on how I disassemble handlebar to fit it. Probably need to remove handlebar and stem together due to the internal cable routing.
I’d imagine it would work the same as my Tarmac, just remove the bars and twist them to fit into the bag. The only issue is that cable routing is truly internal on the Melee, so you may run into issue there. In that case, you may consider the Scion TSA 3.0.
Enjoy the Alps! Tan walls are my choice. They complement the bronze S-Works logo on my bike's down tube. As for saying Ventoux, the locals generally pronounce Mont Ventoux as 'Mon Von-too'. An iconic climb with so much history. Edited to add: lights are essential for transits through alpine tunnels in my opinion.
I’d put them right up there with my Enve wheels. I wouldn’t hesitate to ride them on the Crux or the Tarmac in the same way I’ve ridden Enve’s. They’re excellent wheels.
I misread I realised after the fact, but I thought you were going to run through what you carry while on the ride in your saddle bag. Also an important consideration.
@@outdoorbros_ paradoxically, limited in space but excuse the pun, with everything riding on judicious choices. I re-watched recently a clip about cobbling together a multi tool from two or three tools to end up with one with the particular torx driver he needed as part of what he carried, without going overboard and ending up with a huge weight penalty. I think the channel is rides of japan, or something like that. Regardless, I recall he mention’s getting three flats on one ride. I think this is point in a way, there needs to be a level of “cover” carried, but equally, we need to decide where to draw the line. There is a line I draw where I’m happier to accept I may need to call a taxi or an uber, rather than carry, for example, a spare tire. But, I guess it’s about as personal a set of decisions as can be. I know some people literally carry nothing beyond phone cards / cash. That’d certainly be going too far in the opposite direction for me at least.
Typically I would choose tan wall. But when a bike screams murder, I keep it in line with that. My gravel bikes all have tan wall. But my Soloist would look dumb with tan walls and gold frame.
I have switched to a set of Vittoria Corsa Pro 28mm recently from the turbo cotton. Personally I still prefer the tan wall on the cotton, only wish Specialized will release a tubeless version in the exact same colour in the near future (that also roll fast). The brownish tan wall on the new s-works turbo is just not my cup of tea.
What would you change about my France bike setup?
The French part!
I kid. My father's French. Bon Voyage.
I love that you go over literally everything on the bike and in the bag. Usually people gloss over stuff, but I enjoy all the nerdy nitty gritty details ! great video as always !
Thank you! There’s a lot that goes into a great bike bag setup.
Tan wall all the way
Yup! Love it
+1 for tan wall!
Thank you!
❤❤❤. I love your adventure of riding in the Alps
Thank you! It’s absolutely beautiful up here.
Black frame looks good with the tan walls 👌
Thank you!
Never bought tan but they look great, your clips are butter smooth, great job with the reviews
Thank you!

Good point! And yes, the cables on this are fairly easy to manage for traveling- much better than the Venge.
Sounds like you have learned from past adventures. Enjoy! Just a little jealous.
Thank you!

That’s huge! I think that’s a good call.

So true! We ended up with days of sun, rain and then sun again. I brought extra discs and rotors, thankfully I didn’t use them.

I also went for a black SRAM Force chainring with Red cranks to get the all black look :)
Did the same! With rainbow chain & cassette : DEADLY
Great look!
So awesome!
@@SamuelBlackMetalRider I wish they made rainbow chainrings to really complete the look

Unfortunately, I don’t. If I do, I’ll let you know!

What power meter are you using?
Love the tan wall tyres👍🏻
Thanks! Quarq.

Good intel on the pronunciation, thank you! I’m sure I’ll figure out by the end of the trip. Noted on the lights- we’ll be sure to bring them along!
Maybe Ven Toe is a play on words 😂
Have fun 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you!!!
how is the performance of the Reserve wheel set compare to Enve wheel set ???

I’ll do that in another video- good idea. It’s a short list: dynaplugs, co2, lever, extra 2032’s and a small tool.

If it ain’t tan I don’t want it! Great look!!
Thanks!
Tan wall, especially on a dark colour bike!👍
Bingo! Thank you. I didn’t think I’d like it as much as I do.
So is the Tarmac a warranty frame?? If so, what happened for u to get it?
It is. I bought it from someone on Craigslist.
Typically I would choose tan wall. But when a bike screams murder, I keep it in line with that. My gravel bikes all have tan wall. But my Soloist would look dumb with tan walls and gold frame.
I hear you!
Just ordered the vittoria corsa pro 🎉
Let me know what you think!
@@outdoorbros_ put about 1000km on them, really comfortable, good grip, look great, nothing to dislike about them, definitely prefer them to gp5000s

I would pack a few Tegaderm films just in case you experience an open wound.
Good idea. Thankfully it all went well and we didn’t need the films.
Did you run a powermeter
Yes, typically quarq.
Tan walls are the new black ;)
+1 for tan walls.
What's your Strava?
I post it pretty regularly on my Instagram, just search Chris Johnston and I should come up.
no aethos anymore?
Negative. I sold it last year. Awesome bike!
What tail light is that?
Knog Cobber, awesome light.
😎 #tripgoals
It was all-time!
Black walls bros
Haha, I’ve been in that camp for a while. These ones surprised me.
Love it all except the POC helmet. Do not like the look of those helmets whatsoever
That’s fair. I went back and forth on this one.
Fumpa pumps Google it 👍
Thanks!
Tan wall
Bingo.
Tan Wall belong to 2018-2020
I was also in that era and embraced it. I think this actually looks pretty good.
Jealous of that trip
It’s a total bucket list trip- still feels surreal.
I’m in the ‘all black sidewall’ camp…looks racier
+1 for all black.
Fxckin team tan walls all the way
Yea dude!
New Zealanders are called AL BLACKS .... All black please .......
Tan walls are pretty cool with this one...
Missed sunscreen and chapstick
Haha! They’re in there somewhere.
