  • When a patient develops severe aortic stenosis, doctors at the Michigan Medicine Frankel Cardiovascular Center consider aortic valve replacement through a minimally invasive procedure known as TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement. During the procedure, a collapsible replacement valve is delivered to the valve site through a catheter inserted into an artery in the groin or arm.
Traditionally offered to patients who were too sick for open heart surgery, TAVR is now available for moderate- and low-risk patients. Recovery time for a TAVR procedure is much shorter than for open heart surgery: 1 week versus 3 months. TAVR technology is also being used to restore the function of failing bioprosthetic valves and may be the best valve-replacement option for high-risk patients.
Michigan Medicine is one of the only health systems in the region to offer the full spectrum of TAVR valve options available through clinical trials as well as FDA-approved devices. Our collaborative TAVR team includes cardiologists, interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. As a high-volume center with nearly 10 years of experience performing TAVR procedures, the Frankel Cardiovascular Center is one of the top programs in the country.

TAVR is a huge improvement over SAVR, I am up for an Aortic Valve replacement and hoping I get the TAVR procedure, I have done heaps of research upon doing so it seams to me Calcium deposits is one of the major issues or cause of the Valve problem, I can't help but wonder if in the future TAVR will be replaced by a Decalcifying of the Valve only resulting in a nice clean Calcium free Aortic Valve with the patient being back up on there feet in 1 -2 hrs Good as New.

I have esophogeal ulcers (3); is a TEE safe for me? + when I had a cardiac cath. in 2014? my coronary arteries were too small to accept. any stents? What is the likely-hood that my arteries would also be too small for me to have a TAVR?? I'm 76 yo now.

Does the biosynthetic valve have a metal sheath to it? Does that require coumadin for life? I'd prefer a Pig valve = no blood thiners.
