  • It's been 3 years since I first posted 'how to practice non-attachment'. Today, I'm revisiting the concept and seeing how my life and thoughts have changed in that time.

Unfortunately, so many people use the philosophy of non-attachment as a means of suppressing feelings or moving into an unhealthy state of indifference. In my humble opinion, we should be working on self-awareness rather than non-attachment, especially in a society where numbness, indifference and apathy are on the rise. Awareness of attachment is a beautiful invitation to consider who you are in relation to the subject or the relationship that moves you. Non-attachment doesn't seem like a good substitute for the concept of surrendering. We can surrender while holding grace for our human nature that must have shaped this tendency of easeful attachment for a reason. We can hold no expectations while remaining graceful in the intensity of the bond that has emerged. Those bonds and connections are beautiful teachers, and I'd rather have them and let them be my inner compass than move through life fighting the innate call to attach, feel deeply, celebrate the invisible forces that tie you to something, curiously explore why something lingers, and then eventually... let go. That's what being human is - attach and let go in waves, letting that rhythm shape your story.

God yes, I read a post in a spiritual context on Quora a couple of months ago, and the concept of non-attachment seemed (according to the writer) like emotional detachment alltogether. She stayed in a toxic relationship with a narcissist and thanked her new mindset 😳. That’s… not what non-attachment means.

@@SwedishTourist exactly this, it is so common, to the point where it seems like a gaslighting tool.

Thank you! I was thinking exactly the same when I saw that the video is about non attachment, which I saw other videos about before. You argued so well using awareness and surrendering. I haven't listened to the whole video yet, so I'm sorry if I sound judgemental. This concept is misused and we are alienated already from ourselves and one another enough. Non-attachment is wrongly used when the goal behind all is to be more productive or not to catch feelings in fleeting relationship. Then we are still attached to the goals and to seeking something. So both in relation to our goals, ourselves and our relationships we cannot protect our hearts from getting hurt if we are still open. Love and goals are about being vulnerable and open to disappointment. A healthier approach to me is more about being aware of what we own, control and what we don't. We own and control our effort, attention, but not each other or any outcome.

Yes! As a infj I feel very deeply, to detach reminds me of childhood memories of trauma from a parent who hid emotions. As a mother of two girls who are very emotional I embrace it

Love this topic! To me, non-attachement is a form of acceptance: we could say that if you attach to something, you resist change. Whereas if you accept something as it is in the present, including emotions, you are not attached to them, you just embrace them, are open to them.
And so to me, non-attachement is peace 🤍

I think non-attachment can be, bringing genuine acceptance to life as exactly as it's and living it with a sense of self that can come from things we choose to do. Btw, I also agree with a few of your inputs to your past self, like surrendering is what non-attachment is. Cheers'ing you a 🧋!

It’s feels so full circle that this is the particular video
You chose to reflect on because it was my first Kaylyn video I watched all the way back in 2020 and I’ve been a subscriber ever since💕 it was the video I needed at the time, just like this is the video i need right now. Thank you 💓

having watched you for like 8 years now, this was one of my facourite videos ever. defining non attachment as an individual seems easy in comparison but thinking of non attachment as a mother, fiance, daughter in law, is so so different and complex. 💗

The best way I apply non attachment is through my faith. I'm catholic and I carry the knowledge that God can take away everything in an instant nothing around me is permanent. Conversely though, my religion does allow me to have a lot of these questions answered while being okay with the mystery that is God. Having faith is comforting I wouldn't know what to do without it so in that sense there is still that permanence where I don't know who I would be without my religion. It's interesting to think about.

@7:55 During this part of the video I thought about this thought I once read in a book, I don't remember which one anymore. But here the spiritual teacher said "Big monk in the city, small monk on the mountain". And what he meant by that is that it's easy to practice non-attachment out by yourself in nature, the real tests come when you practice it amongst things, friends and family.

I have a question for the group.
How do you think is a healthy way to practice non attachment and not slip into a state of dissociation?

Lean into still feeling the emotions and moving through them instead of suppressing them. It’s just not getting attached to any expectations or outcomes.
