Volvo v50 D1.6 2006 making a howling or whining sound

- This volvo turbodiesel makes a weird noise. I already inspected most of the turbo hoses. I can't really locate it. Does anybody know what it could be?

My 2007 Hyundai i30 1.6 CRDi has been making this sound for half a year now, and recently it's changed slightly (no power issues or smoke though). I took it to a local turbo shop, and they found that the turbine shaft wiggles, and touches the turbine housing, thus making this sound. They said that I could drive it until it blows, although the worst case scenario would mean that the oil would go straight into the engine, possibly causing a diesel runaway. I decided to repair it, the turbo is getting refurbished.
To anyone driving with this sound, please take it to a turbo shop to get it checked out, for your own sanity. I was becoming really paranoid about it, and funnily enough I feel relieved now that I know the cause of it, even if it's going to cost me an arm and a leg, lol.
In my case it is just some wear on the turbine blades thats all.
Damn
that sound of turbo engine ♥️♥️♥️♥️😍😍😍😍😍😘😘😘😘😵😵😵😉😉👍👍👍👍
Thank you PSA (Peugeot Citroën)
For that great sound
It should not sound like this. The turbo probably has some wear. idk why you think that a damaged turbine blade sounds nice.
It's not the normal sound.. It's something wrong to the turbine. I think is dirty
@@erwinbolink i don't know why i love a sound of turbo like this...
I feel a strange thing when hearing something like this It feels indescribable hhhhhhhhhhh
@@SMAr2wo it has some wear on the blades it is not dirty.
I found a small cut in my intercooler hose (right side) a year ago. Exact sound
Same here, limp mode
99% a leak in air intake. ... down the line intercooler hoses
I have exactly the same sound i my car. It's a 2010. I didn't find any leaks, and put it to a workshop. They told me it was the turbo. For me it sounds strange, so I must study the problem a bit more before I change the turbo.
I had the exact same noise. A small part of a wing on the turbine on exhaust side of the turbo was gone.
The same problem here. First and second turbo did the same. Now the third one is OK but I can see leaks of exhaust on the turbo compressor side.
Turbocharger is about to die. The inner rotor bearings of the aggregate are worn. You should check also for oil spill between AMS and turbocharger inlet. If so, oil used for turbo lubrication is escaping and going in exhaust (where is burned) and intake.
No its not about the die. In my previous comments you could read that its likely to be some tiny wear on the turbineblades that causes turbulence. Also the video is more than 2 years old, the car has been running for more than 50k miles with this sound now.
erwin bolink , I have looked again over the whole comments and I have seen the information. Sorry for my miss.
My car has the same engine and the noise comming from turbocharger is similar. After investigation seems the this must be replaced. That's why i
I have set tbat "it's about to die".
All the best!
I had the same problem in my v50 v1.6, It was fixed
Noise came from the EGR (Metal plate between the engine block and the EGR)
Having the same issue on my V50 1.6 I definitely up vote your answer.
If for nothing else, at least it's a cheaper option. Than the others "Turbo replacement mandates". LOL 🙂
Jokes apart, the idea of taking off the EGR to clean/maintain. And put it back with a new gasket is way more appealing than. Deal with an expensive turbo. ;-)
For what it's worth both have a shitty access! ;-)
Def. Turbo!
Turbine sound. Maybe the hose came of a bit so it makes louder noise. Works fine.
I got same noise on -08 S40 T5. I'm suspecting something in turbo too but I don't know so much about cars so dunno what exactly it could be. Has been running 10,000+ km with the noise without problems. Did you find yet the exact reason for it? Would be nice to know! I have been thinking optimizing the car but I'm not sure should I do it coz of that sound even tho it hasn't affected anything so far.
I'm having the same issue with my mazda6 2.2D, suspect it's the turbo The same noise but our car is unable to go past 80kph ever since we have this noise. I've read the comments and nobody seems to mention about loss of power. Any idea on this? Mazda told us to replace the whole turbo but I don't think they even do a thorough check on our car!
Did you change the turbo in the end?
Hallo.
Dadurch turboschaden.Ich hoffe habe dir geholfen.

Amir Huremovic the video is more than 2 years old and the car and turbo are is still running great. Look at my older comments so you know what's going on.
Got exact same sound on my pegeuot 407 2.0 hdi
Turbine have some issues. Naybe must be cleaned
I have the exact same problem, I visited volvo garage they said it was the alternater baring getting stuck. Do you confirm your noise was turbo or alternater?
The alternator is not in the location where the sound comes from on this car. The alternator is on the passenger side almost at the bottom of the engine, the sound is coming from the top where the turbo is.
Hi, l have same problem, my car is making same sounds like what heard in the video. I don't know what is the source of the problem. Please if you repar your car, provide me with informations
We did not repair it. The car is still running perfect after all these years.
Look at the intercooler hose down to the radiator. If it have a gap it will sound like that
Hi! I see that your last reply was about 8 months ago so I was wondering did you ended up fixing the issue? It seems that my 2010 drive has the same whisting noise..
No i didn't fix it we are still driving it and the noise hasn't changed. It seems like the compressor blades have some very tiny wear ridges that make the air start to whistle when it passes over them.
Ok, I see.. Then I'll probably ignore the sound until other simptoms start to show up :) Thanks for the reply and take care!
Arnolds Vītols you could check if the turbine has play on it's bearing, if that is the case you should replace it. Engines don't like small pieces of metal flying around inside. 😉
I had exactly same noise in my 09 s40 rdesign and I changed everything including turbo, gaskets ,dpf ,intercooler, piping and it never went away very frustrating..
We still use it 250.000 km later with the same noise. We didn't fix it. The car has now run 435.000km
Yeah mine has over 200000 miles on it now and it runs perfect but the noise is annoying I was going to drop it to volvo dealership to let them look at it maybe they can sort it..
I had the same thing on my 2010 1.6d s40. It was the voltage regulator in the alternator. Noise went away after alternator was refubished.
@@erwinbolink what make is your car? I ve had the same sound for a week now. Mine is Toyota Corolla.
@@erwinbolink - That's the best news ever... ;-)
Its the oiltrap/pcv system. The seal is gone
Hey I have the exact same noise on my 05 Volvo v50. Mine still runs fine as well but I want to fix it cause I plan on selling it. Ever find out exactly what it was and how to fix it?
It is probably some wear on the turbine blades. The car still runs fine after several years
@@erwinbolink appreciate it! Ever get a quote to fix it?
No we didn't. But replacing a turbo is not cheap i guess.
i have the same car and had a whistling noise turns out it was the transfer case going bad idk its the same though
Turbina..!
Hello, did you find what the noise was? I have the same problem. Thank you.
My best guess is wear or damage on a turbine blade, the car is still running strong with the sound.
erwin bolink Ok thank you.
@@erwinbolink mine too!! I need help I don’t know what to do
so did you find the issue after all? i have the same noise in my nissan qashqai..... :(
Ηλιας Δαμιανιδης The car still runs great except for the noise, we didn't repair it. for all I know it probably is a tiny leak somewhere or a tiny imperfection of a turbineblade.
erwin bolink thank you for letting me know that sound makes me crazy....
well today my turbocharger died....
Ηλιας Δαμιανιδης well that sucks, did it make exactly the same noise? Our turbo still runs fine, no oil loss no imbalance in the bearings except for the noise it runs perfect.
erwin bolink exactly the same noise, if you see in my channel, you can hear how it sounds now that its blown, good news is that I might add a bigger one 😉
Did you find out the issue I’m having same problem
The car is still running fine. We suspect it is some small wear on the turbine blades. I understand that a lot of Volvo's have this issue.
Turbina
I also have the problem with my Ford Focus 1,6 TDCI machine. My dealer said the turbo is broken. Has anyone ideas why ? I guess in my case it will be accumulstion of carbon in the turbo and the DPF which may impait the VTG regulator. Has anyone an idea ?
broken ballbearing inside of the turbo... :)
Did you solve the issue I have same car doing it now
so what whas the reason for that sound?
I don't know yet, nobody responded or they had the wrong solution.
+erwin bolink do you fix it??
Marek Malecki The car still runs good but i didnt fix it.
Schlauch (Ladeluftkühler) unten.
The sound is coming from inside the turbo at the exhaust side, i checked all the hoses(schlauche).
Alternator :)
Read my earlier comments, it's not the alternator.
@@erwinbolink ahh okey 😉
Check flowmeter
Why should i?
@@erwinbolink it made the same sound for me and my car wasn t functioning right, like 70% of the horsepower or lower and i've got a full test and they said to change the flowmeter
That's one of the injectors letting air out. Normally the copper ring not sealing properly hence the whistle. Cheapish repair
I have exactly the same whistle, which is correltating to the accelerator being pushed, just like in this movie.
I plan to go on holiday with this car, but my car mechanic is on holiday currently...
Is this something that is problematic for the car? I mean safety, or can it induce engine damage?
Kind regards,
Not a safety issue I believe. More performance but it can fail resulting in a breakdown.
Its not the injectors otherwise the whistle would be pulsating with
movement of the piston, plus the sound is coming from the turbo/downpipe or DPF
Its been a few months now the car is still running fine, i think its probably a tiny leak in the exhaust system or wastegate. I still have to take apart the exhaust side of the turbo.
I do apologise. That massive noise I also had an was a turbo pipe which cost £100 including fitting.
turbo core
Pedro Pereira what do you mean? the turbo core is build from different parts.
erwin bolink u need to replace or repair the turbo core.
Pedro Pereira lol. like I said the turbocore is made up from different parts, what specific part would cause that noise you think?
erwin bolink .... the core is this = www.google.pt/search?q=turbo+core&prmd=ivn&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjqvbqlktPQAhVJORQKHV0pAQAQ_AUIBygB&biw=360&bih=512#tbm=isch&q=turbo+core+garret+1.6+tdci&imgrc=9peQz41ZXv-0_M%3A
turbo has the housing, the core and a wastegate. For last the electrovalve that's on the other side of the engine attached
Pedro Pereira Like I said I know what the core is, but what part of the core do you think is damaged? bearings,shaft,compressorwheel,o-rings???
Turbo
Sound of almost dead turbo😎😎
Read the comments before assuming things.
@@erwinbolink your question was what could be ?the whinning sound!! You got your answer
@@dejanvanevski4399 But it's not, because almost 1,5 years later and ten thousands of miles later the turbo is still running fine. That's why i said "read the comments" because the turbo isn't almost dead.
Don't it sound cool
Turbo is f up
No it isn't, read the comments.
