What a Spectacular plant. 2 years ago I found a epiphyllum in a hanging basket by someone’s garbage to be picked up by the road & I stopped & saved it. But it hasn’t bloomed nor do I know much about caring for them other than my mama never let her Christmas cacti get to damp. When do they bloom?
I used to think I had a Christmas Cactus. After a long time with some research, there is a distinct difference between what is called C. C. and what is called Orchid Cactus. The stems of the C. C. are short sections with smaller blossoms generally and the O. C. has flat and sometimes triple edge flat. So mine is an official Orchid Cactus. The Plant List includes 82 scientific plant names of species rank for the genus Epiphyllum. Of these 15 are accepted species names. I don't know if the Christmas Cactus is a Species of the epiphyllum? Sounds like another good question for Google. Could be. Anyway, to answer your question about care. Obviously, I hit on something that works spectacularly well. You are correct, they don't like to be over watered, wait till they are totally dry and then,, FEED them, don't just water. I use VF11 as directed. Any good plant food will do I suppose,, which is way better than nothing. Finally, keep it out of direct sunlight most of the day. They will do fine in very little direct sunlight but lots of indirect. Many people have complimented in the negative about my plant because I tend to let it grow over itself and it literally strangles itself if I don't prune and propagate the cuttings. And do NOT let it freeze. The epiphyllum comes from central and South America,,, I live in central Ca. 4 miles from the ocean and we rarely ever freeze, since my plant is in a covered deck,, no problem. It does seem to do well in the heat of the day which can get up in the 90's in summer. Hope that helps you. Bloom time is Spring with occasional off season singles here and there. They peak for about two weeks and then it's all over till next year, with a run that can last two months total. A cutting can take up to 3 years to bloom. As I understand it there are between 80 and 100 different versions of Epiphyllum. They do better with indirect sunlight. Blooming night and day. Thank You!
I used VF11 for more years than I can remember. It is manufactured here in Ca. They used to take orders from anywhere. Then the pandemic caused problems with production of the product. Patience is a must. Then little or no direct sunlight and some plant food for succulents. I use VF11 but it's not sold all over the world so most anything will do fine. Esta planta se llama Orchid Cactus, una especie de Epiphyllum nativa de América Central y del Sur. No estoy familiarizado con tu ubicación en México, pero esperaría encontrar esta planta cerca de ti.
My first experience with the Orchid Cactus, a nice lady handed me this Tiny sprout of a thing and tried to explain what was going to happen and I had never seen one in full bloom so I didn't know what I had. (That tiny sprout became what you see in the video some 35-40 years later approx 11 ft X 6 ft,,,ya, it needs pruning a lot now.) I watered it whenever "it spoke to me" which was hardly ever. (I found that VF-11 plant food works best but any good plant food will make a difference). It would be about a year or two later and the amazing surprise happened all on plane water not very often. The pot may have been a little too large. Turns out that over watering may be the most common mistake, let it dry out between watering, otherwise little puffs of cotton like stuff appears mostly at joints, could even rot the plant,, they are however very resilient. So patience is important. I found that they will flower faster in a smaller pot to start with; then just move the whole thing to the next larger pot. They do best in dirt that drains really well, even the dirt I get around here in CA. that is designated for succulents and cactus is a little too thick I think for the Orchid Cactus but it works and you can't argue with success. Amazing difference in the speed of growth and flowering with a well draining potting soil. Little to no direct sunlight seems to work best. Don't allow it to get too cold either. It is native to Central and South America. Hope that helps you.
@@99BeeGee For so many years it has always been spring, April and May. Then it started to bloom earlier into March. This year I was seeing the beginnings of blossoms in late Feb. This plant is native to central and south America. And of course, California where this plant lives. Near the coast so it doesn't get too hot for very long, doesn't like direct sunlight. Likes it a bit cool but not too close to freezing; typical of northern Ca. nearer to the coast. Lots of these on youtube.
Where do you live,,, don't have to give exact address here. I can send a cutting that is already rooted. That would give the best chance for success. My email: LHT4225@gmail.com
Indeed, I really had to get aggressive about pruning as it literally strangles itself. So I just pick the nicest shoots and start more. Finally got one to grow outside.
I realized I didn't actually answer your question. They start new shoots till they start to choke others off, not healthy thing to do actually. What happens is the arms do get longer to a point. Even then there is a limit or so it seems. So, Bigger? Only to a point where the pot gets root bound and then it's really time to split it up or prune. So far I am only pruning. It just keeps growing these larger shoots, looking very healthy but it chokes the older ones. Hence the need to prune regularly.

I am currently in the process of sending a cutting to India to see how that goes first. (Last week of July, 2020) Had excellent luck sending local from California. Should be no problem. So far I have not officially charged for this. I'll accept a donation but I have to see how much it costs to send to India and how successful it is. Then I'll set up an official order system. If you check on UA-cam you will find many sources for cuttings by mail.
@@prasadaarte6003 For the moment this is it. If you are comfortable writing your address here that will be a start. Then be patient. I have a lot going on at the moment. Maybe two weeks before I can get to you. I need to start more cuttings also.

Epiphyllum is a genus of about 15 species of epiphytic plants in the family Cactaceae, native to tropical and subtropical America. This particular species is called (Orchid Cactus)
I use VF11 sold in stores here on the west coast of California USA for around $20.00 us per Gal. I see it is available on Amazon for way more money and may not be worth all that. So I will give here a list of ingredients so you may compare with what is available in your area,, most commercial plant foods do just fine. Nitrate Nitrogen .15%; Available Phosphate (p205) .85%; Soluable Potash (K20) .55% Derived from potassium nitrate and phosphoric acid. This info copied right off the label on the container. Note: it is in liquid form and recommended mix is 2 tbl spoons (1 oz) per gal of water for any application.
Takes many years. This plant will be 40 years next year. A new cutting can take any number of years before it starts to blossom,, some more than others.
This plant is nearly 40 years old. A new cutting can take years before it starts to bloom. I don't know the secret except just keep it out of direct sunlight and water every 2 weeks depending on climate. I use VF11 which seemed to really help it go.
I added a video on Christmas day this year recording something magical it seems: One blossom peaked right at Christmas day,, amazing. We shall see how this years "crop" appears sometime in May is the usual order of things regarding the blooming season.

I can send you a small cutting that is already rooted. Or look around where you are for "Orchid Cactus". Comes in many varieties and colors. All you need is a little cutting, a good plant food, the right potting soil, and some patience.
@@ramanatishivavineeth6199 You are in East Central India according to the map. wow. I think an Orchid cactus would do well there with mostly shade. You will need some potting soil made for cactus plants and some plant food would be good. Give me you address and I'll send you a rooted cutting and we will see what happens. Sounds like fun.
Thank you for that,, so many great comments,,, yours points to what in psychology is the metaphor of: The opening of a flower symbolizes the opening of consciousness as in, all in it's own time. No way to tell the flower to "hurry up".
Yo uso un alimento para plantas llamado FV11. Supongo que cualquiera puede obtener este producto en varios lugares en línea. Creo que solo se vende en tiendas en y alrededor de California, EE. UU. (U. S. A.)
Thank you for the question. Common name is Orchid Cactus. Growers use the term epiphyllum that refers to a genus of succulent plants,, who knows how many there really are,, in this case they are tropical not desert and come from central and south america. Many different colors and shapes to chose from. I first acquired this particular plant 40 years ago and we thought it was a Christmas Cactus but that turned out to be wrong. Since then there seems to be no limit as to the size it will grow so it is best to propagate and keep pruning.
Where in the world are you? What country? What state? The origin of this plant is Central and South America. It likes a temperate climate not too hot or too cold and out of a lot of direct sunlight. Here in the Coastal, Central California (USA) as you can see it does very well under those conditions I mention here.
@@kousalyareddy27 Google map is amazing. I see Hyderabad city in the middle of India. Checking the weather there year-round temperatures from 61 to 102, rarely under 55 or over 107. There is a monsoon season with somewhat oppressive rain at times. Orchid Cactus would need to be protected from extremes of wet and dry and mostly away from direct sunlight. It would be an interesting experiment to see if it would thrive there. There is a lot of information available online sources such as UA-cam can be extremely valuable. Soil, for example, it needs to be more of the type that does not hold onto moisture, drains well. Overwatering is a common problem. It likes most any common plant food. Since you are on the other side of the planet, so to speak, it would be wise to check around and see if there is someone who has this plant somewhere in your city. If not then I will need an address to send a rooted cutting for the best chance of success. Namaste.

Likes it a bit cool but not too close to freezing; typical of northern Ca. nearer to the coast. Lots of these on youtube.
Do you sell one of this flowers...let me know... Please.
Where do you live,,, don't have to give exact address here. I can send a cutting that is already rooted. That would give the best chance for success. My email: LHT4225@gmail.com
Que maravilha de cactos orquídea
Este hermoso cactus también lo podemos tener en California !
Sin lugar a duda. Éste está en Scotts Valley, CA.
That is one happy epi! I see you love it very much since it had so many blooms. Has it got a lot bigger in 2 years?
It seems to have peaked at somewhere between 300 and 400 blossoms, only in spring. That would be several years now.
대단합니다 그러나. 꽃. 크기는. 작네요. 공작선인장. 멋져요.
Can u share for me 1 leave I will keep to protect and take care carefully

Very awesome, are sale some for me?
I am currently in the process of sending a cutting to India to see how that goes first. (Last week of July, 2020) Had excellent luck sending local from California. Should be no problem. So far I have not officially charged for this. I'll accept a donation but I have to see how much it costs to send to India and how successful it is. Then I'll set up an official order system. If you check on UA-cam you will find many sources for cuttings by mail.
@@lht4225 how can I get this from u where may I connect with you to get this
@@prasadaarte6003 For the moment this is it. If you are comfortable writing your address here that will be a start. Then be patient. I have a lot going on at the moment. Maybe two weeks before I can get to you. I need to start more cuttings also.
Okay but how much cost of this ?
@@prasadaarte6003 At this point I am not "in the business" so to speak. I'm asking people to cover the cost of packaging and mail. We take a look at where you live and go from there. If you want to show your address here then we will figure it out.

Amazing = Amazing = Amazing = O my God !!!
I sou-lhes like tô know which fertilizer UA-cam use on il, espero que o tratutor tenha me ajudado 😘
Lee Thompson obg de coração, vou ver se consigo comprar pela internet 😘👏😘
Very nice 💐💐💐💐💐💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
Cómo se llama esta planta
Esta planta se llama Orchid Cactus, una especie del género Epiphyllum. también nativo de América Central
How do you get it to bloom so many...?
Takes many years. This plant will be 40 years next year. A new cutting can take any number of years before it starts to blossom,, some more than others.
This plant is nearly 40 years old. A new cutting can take years before it starts to bloom. I don't know the secret except just keep it out of direct sunlight and water every 2 weeks depending on climate. I use VF11 which seemed to really help it go.
It’s beautiful, pls make another video on it.🌱🦋👍
I added a video on Christmas day this year recording something magical it seems: One blossom peaked right at Christmas day,, amazing. We shall see how this years "crop" appears sometime in May is the usual order of things regarding the blooming season.
It blooms in early spring and I will take new video every year.
Quiero expresar mi gratitud por todos los excelentes comentarios, además del programa "Traducir" en Google para que pueda leerlos en el idioma en que están escritos.

Bro where can I get these plants
I can send you a small cutting that is already rooted. Or look around where you are for "Orchid Cactus". Comes in many varieties and colors. All you need is a little cutting, a good plant food, the right potting soil, and some patience.
@@lht4225 where are u from bro
I am from Andhra pradesh
@@ramanatishivavineeth6199 Bay Area California, USA
@@ramanatishivavineeth6199 You are in East Central India according to the map. wow. I think an Orchid cactus would do well there with mostly shade. You will need some potting soil made for cactus plants and some plant food would be good. Give me you address and I'll send you a rooted cutting and we will see what happens. Sounds like fun.
Wow beautiful
Estan ermosas ,me hiso muy feliz mi dia .
This plant name is “Atlas”
Wow beautiful flowers g
Hi! Have you got cuttings for sale? Regards!
I have not done that yet. Perhaps in a ziplock bag it would survive, don't know. Would have to investigate that.
Not at this time. Maybe some day,, have to figure out how to send.
Ok! Thanks you! I'm in the UK. The cuttings can survive for weeks. 👍
Wow 👌

Lineo maravilhoso a minna vai abrir uma flor imagina quando estiver assim
Thank you for that,, so many great comments,,, yours points to what in psychology is the metaphor of: The opening of a flower symbolizes the opening of consciousness as in, all in it's own time. No way to tell the flower to "hurry up".
Que utiliza para q esten tan linds
Yo uso un alimento para plantas llamado FV11. Supongo que cualquiera puede obtener este producto en varios lugares en línea. Creo que solo se vende en tiendas en y alrededor de California, EE. UU. (U. S. A.)

Whats name ofthis plamt
Thank you for the question. Common name is Orchid Cactus. Growers use the term epiphyllum that refers to a genus of succulent plants,, who knows how many there really are,, in this case they are tropical not desert and come from central and south america. Many different colors and shapes to chose from. I first acquired this particular plant 40 years ago and we thought it was a Christmas Cactus but that turned out to be wrong. Since then there seems to be no limit as to the size it will grow so it is best to propagate and keep pruning.
The Genus Epiphylum has around a hundred variations. This one is called Orchid Cactus.
Hi sir soo beautiful send me one leaf pls
Where in the world are you? What country? What state? The origin of this plant is Central and South America. It likes a temperate climate not too hot or too cold and out of a lot of direct sunlight. Here in the Coastal, Central California (USA) as you can see it does very well under those conditions I mention here.
@@lht4225 hi sir tq for your valuable response & I am indian Hyderabad city I love plants
Namaste.
It beautiful I love ❤️
And the orchid cactus says thank you very much. 💓
