- After driving the 2010 BMW X5 M, there were numerous subtitles for this story bouncing around in our head. Because it was only a handful of years ago, when BMW introduced the 2004 X5 4.8is, that it said, "There will never be an M version of the X5," we were tempted to write, "Never Say Never."
One blast down the drag strip in this 555-horsepower breadbox in Monte Carlo Blue had us shouting, "12-second SUV!" If we believed the rumor (and we don't) that one of the primary reasons for the X5 M's existence is to satisfy the conspicuously well-funded market among the mobsters in Russia, then we could've run with "From Russia With Love."

just bought one of these HOLY SHIT IS IT THE BEST CAR I HAVE EVER DRIVEN!!!!
that's one sick suv. insanely sick
I bought my x5 3.0i in 2003 and its been a great V6 SAV. I was thinking of buying the new 2010 Range Rove Sport Supercharge until I saw this X5 M5!! OMG! OMG! X5 M5 here I come!!
I have a new favorite SUV. That's just amazing!!
wow, those numbers are incredible. I'm no BMW guy, but a SUV that would hand sports cars their asses deserves some respect.
How can you not love the sound it makes when it shifts? "BRRRRRrrrrrr"
Well, a sports car is a sports car, this is a sports car that can go in snow, carry your family and your dog. So it does make sense.
got this bad boy....it doesnt make much sense as a car, but if u drive it, u will love it...smoked some porches and amgs with it
That skidpad number is amazing for a truck
finally a video like this
I'm not sure how BMW accomplished such a good skid pad number but it is amazing. The BMW M5 is from 2005 area that isn't "older" as you say, it is still has a world class engine it has: 5.0-liter, 40-valve V-10 engine with M high-pressure Double VANOS "steplessly" variable valve timing 10 individual throttle butterflies, electronically controlled G-sensitive semi-dry-sump lubrication, system Oil coolant heat exchanger,
Digital Motor Electronics (DME). The M5 is good, the X5M is bettter :(
simply amazing in every aspect
that was impressive. some cars cant even perfom that well. did u see how much momentum it seems to get from the quarter mile?
It looks very hot and the performance is incredible for its weight.
BMW forever.
Confort, and dynamics.
wow, this suv is badass, and the stats prove it
Wow! That thing is fast!
"so if you know the basics of maintaining a car, then BMW's shouldn't give you problems"
I've found that to be the case, i've never had a significant problem with any of my bimmers. Though i took my M3 in for repairs about 5 times in as many years all but one of them were due to minor nitpicky problems with light circuitry and the like. The only major one was a brake replacement which wasn't actually necessary, i merely thought they were getting a tad soggy.
This is actually an SAV (sports activity vehicle)
It's a beast, twin turbo V8, 555 hp, 500 lb-ft of torque.
The x5 has a 5-series sedan base, unlike normal suvs which have a truck base. also, the engine is a 4.4L bi-turbo which gives it more torque than the M5. i have 2003 x5 4.4i and it is truly a great suv and a fun to drive even if it doesn't have the M badge!!!
wow, impresive numbers
WOW WOW WEE WOW... look @ the numbers!
SICK 555hp!!
InsideLine's track tests got a 4.6 sec 0-60 mph on a 2008 M3. This did it in 4.5!!
THat is extremly impressive.
wow...i've never seen something so big move like that...thats sick...i bet it gets like 2 mpg tho
still have yet to see any suv go through the slalom as hard as Acura's RDX, its the only SUV that I've driven that won't flip.
now they gotta test the x6m
This is my baby!!!!!! das auto ist einfach geil!!!!!!
holy fuckin shit, a X5 M doing 4.5 0-60?! that is incredible for an SUV!!
the quater mile time is very impressive.
It performs good on the track but rims should be a little bigger in my opinion nice looking suv tho.
BRILLIANT so now that its confirmed that the new m5 with have its engine it should be a lil faster than the cts-v :)
It sounds pretty nice..
WOW!!
I;m not even a big fan of BMW but ... wow!
Very impressive figures for a big, heavy suv.
I may have to switch my mind from the G55 ... nah!!
:o)
Daaaaaaaaamn !!!
X5 from hell !!
what a beast!!!!!!
What kind of Skyline?
Like a 250GT Skyline?
Continued) The other thing is that it has an unpleasant "jerk" whenever you switch gears, and considering that i've never owned an automatic car, i like to think i was doing it correctly. It feels like a normal car that has been tweaked to be better, something's missing. It also doesn't handle quite as crisply as a the M3. The only reason i would take an IS-F over an M3 would be if it were significantly cheaper, which it isn't. It's not bad, it's just that the M3 is better and no more expensive.
WOW!!!!.......this SUV is fucking amazing!
thats great...but how is 2005 not older? 5 years is a long time and since then, many other car companies answered the e60 m5...its performance isn't as unique/impressive now as it was in 2005...i think its the last car left in the bmw line up still from the chris bangle era and a new generation is coming...
No, the C30 is a hatchback, by Volvo. And by the 4runner not being able to compete, I meant by everything except off road capeability. But like I said the 4runner wasn't meant to, also it's half the price of the X5. My aunt has a 4 runner, but she wants a Sequoya( I don't know how to spell it) because of the 4runner's bard ride.
How popular is the BMW X5 in India?
you dont understand, the sub-par suspension is the fun part. It adds a sense of fear and requires more skill from the driver than an ///M suspension does.
Why not- add this SUV to the fleet? We think it's one of the best SUV'S in the world- hands down.
How does this have the same 0-60time and a better skid number then the BMW... M5?
i want a x5 m pure style and sporty
116 feet braking distance is a 5000+ pounds suv? thats just crazy
true. but what about the X6
the m5 is older now...u don't think in all that time they wudn't tweak their engineering? its a completely different engine with more horsepower and probably other changes to chassis, etc.
i cant whether i'd take the X6M or the X5M
@AdrianC12345 compete in what, horsepower? Because they are capable of doing the exact same thing. Is the c30 a suv?
@Miike92 I've been to dealerships and seen the sticker on a x6m it was $94,000 and $104,000 for a Nissan GTR. Now I know the GTR is faster but the X6m is faster with the Hammann Chip 670HP. That and the BMW will have maintenance included.
impresionante bmw
Impressive
Wow! 0.91g is damn impressive. So is 4.5 sec 0-60, obviously.
what else is their if you factor out those, just looks?
heated, cooled, and massaging seats, automatic open/close trunk, third row seating, heated back row seats, LED lights front/rear, 315 tires, do I need to keep going?
The previous gen bmw x5 4.6s wasnt fugly with bigger rims.
Yes but that's a rare example, and one that i never really think i'd use anyway. I've driven an IS-F from the far end of long island back into NY (my friend the owner, had drank too much at a bbq)and it feels like an M3, but with training wheels. It's fast but it rides a bit too soft for a real sports car, the shifting is jerky and it only needed a 6 speed, it feels like they were trying to one-up MB and BMW and forgot that 8 gears is just superfluous, not even a Veyron needs that.
the cones. In that quick changes of direction, it probably has the torque on the wrong wheel, everytime the driver steers.
Obviously, Nissan GT-R doesn't have this problem.
nearly identical AWD system...........? explain please
coool...i want one
what does w/ rollout mean?
True. It's like making a racing minivan, it's just not pointful. If you want a car that can take the kids to practice, take you skiing, or tow your boat on weekends, buy an SUV. If you want something sleek and sporty, buy a car.
@AdrianC12345 not really. An 85k suv is unpractical, its not like its a sports car.
Let's see.
Compared to BMW X5 xDrive 35d Insideline tested a couple of weeks ago, the skidpad grip have improved dramatically
watch?v=Nw_AYY5AvpA
I think that's thanks to the new rear torque vectoring diff.
But the slalom speed is WORSE by 2 mph!!!
I think it should be better in a car with sports suspension. I'd blame the differential for this as well, BMW didn't code the program controlling with slalom tests in mind. The diff must be doing something wrong when the car goes through
A 12 second SUV? Holy fuck! That thing is pretty damn awesome and i hate SUVs.
Actually looks fairly decent. A lot better than the X6 M.
wow BMW OWNS
Is this faster than supercharged range rover sport model and the cherokee srt8? anyone know?
pretty good for a station wagon
kinda ridiculous how it outperforms their '08 M3... that is crazy
@psmTARDCORE
Maybe statistically speaking you are right, but the people watching this video have a higher chance of owning a BMW or some type of premium vehicle. Ex. I have an X5 M, so I am interested in looking at track footage.
my god u have it easy in ur country 85000$ barely buys u an a5 coupe here in lebanon this thing is nearly worth 180 grand here
whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatttt ? .91G damnnnn. amazing car.
sorry to tell you... reliability is a problem in some BWM models. The best example is the E60 500 series. Trust me, I worked in a Mazda/BMW carshop which allso did repairs and stuff... And here in Finland there are 10 Mazdas sold when only one BMW is sold. Still there were so much BMWs being repaired. Put me thinking that what exactly are you paying for in BMW?
Well yes a 4runner is a good car but even a regular X5 can get up to 90K. And as good as the 4 runner is it can't compete with the X5. Of course it wasn't meant to. But still, if I were to get an SUV it wouldn't be a cheap one, otherwise I'd get a luxury sedan or coupe or hatch. What do you think about the C30 R-Design?
Oh, and the reason why I'm comparing it to GT-R is because they've nearly identical AWD system and diff setup.
I suppose 5 years could be awhile in car years. Bangle only annonced he would be leaving BMW this past February, so there is still the 6, 5, 3, 1 series, X5, and .. X3 with Bangles design incorperated into them but the 7 series has been replaced and the 5 series is almost here:D then the 3 and 6 sereis will be here in the next 2-3 years:) but i'm happy Bangle is gone.
beastly
love it
not bad for a SUV! :)
thats so bad ass
@AdrianC12345 im not really into hatchbakcs and suvs but i really like the infiniti fx35
@mathiastheok I'm quite satisfied with the vehicle I own, thank you.
@AdrianC12345 not really. I have a 4runner its not big, and its pretty luxurious and has lots of features. 45k. Theirs no need to waste money on that type of car.
If i had 90k i would get a sports car easy
fantastic performance for an suv, unfortunately it i still useless on a race track, i guarantee the brakes, tires, will start to give after 2 laps. For the road, fantastic, unfortunately nobody uses that kind of performance on the road
"BMW engines are beauties"
Most of the screw-ups with bimmers are not with the engines, it's generally electronics or other things. Bimmers are also more high performance than say... Lexus, meaning they wear out brakes quicker, and are more prone to user error (my BMW mechanic was kept in business by teenagers who rode the clutch into oblivion). Higher performance cars are almost always higher maintenance.
This things almost faster than a stock M3?!
What you're paying for is the difference in driving quality and capability. There are definately some reliability issues with particular models but it comes down to what you want out of a car. If you're looking for a reliable car to use as your daily hack, BMW is probably not the first choice unless you're loaded. But, I'm yet to drive a Japanese car that has the same feeling of completeness beamers have. That's not to say Jap's don't have their merits, but you get what you pay for for sure.
this is not an SUV, its a fast station wagon
well the X5 would be more useful but the X6 looks like it's meant to go fast. like the other guy said this looks like a rocket wagon
@jdelgado15 The x5 3.0i comes with a straight-6, not a V6.
And the X5 M is 100% better on track than the Range Rover Sport will ever be.
The X5 M has a 4.4 liter V8 offering 555 hp, while the Rover Sport will have a 5 liter v8 with only 510 hp.
BMW= smaller engine, better performance.
The BMW is more aerodynamic, and has a better, more sporty handling.
Sport SUVs are pretty stupid, but if you want one, then the X5 M is the best choice.
Most sports cars do get bad MPGs and it's still cheaper than buying a sports car ans then buying an SUV. But then it's not like SUVs have good mpgs.
PS: bring on the X6 M, i bet it'll do better on the slalom
Hmmm, yeah its fast, but uhhh, I guess you missed Porsche doing this about 4 years ago.
what the hell was all that liquid dripping at 1:09 lol
Bigger rims create poorer performance. More rotational mass to get up to speed, stop, plus less sidewall to help control in the corners. Plus giant rims = fugly
Wow, in everything besides the straight line this thing looks to disappoint! I believe the X6M is miles better, though.
Absolutely agree!
It is a car for showoffs, rich people who need status and people in the entertainment industry.
