Cool video. As a fellow Scarlett user, I've played a lot with different setups and settings and consulted the Kemper forums quite a bit in the process. I was using XLRs in stereo at first but was told that there can be issues with using XLRs as it automatically activates the mic pres. I now record mono using one TRS and it's the best sound I've gotten so far. Ever since, the rest has been tweaking on the Kemper itself. Hehe

I know he only has a solo but don't forget if you're running something just a bit bigger like a 2i2 you can easily just run Kemper with stereo TRS or XLR cables into a mixer and then send that into your audio interface this way you could have numerous things plugged into it without having to unplug and replug stuff in and you get more adjustments and control before it hits your audio interface, this means all your stuff vocal mics, drum mics ect. can be running and no extra hassle messing with everything once it's all set.

HW Great Vid! Love the way you explain things without over complicating. Any chance you could do a Vid on Reamping with the Kemper? I do use spdif for recording you get a dry signal along with the wet signal with 1 cable but struggle with the Reamping.
    Thanks brother

For metal etc, output configuration is nice to change quickly if recording rhythm guitars first. Mono + DI is incredibly useful for this. Then later you might want to record a solo or a clean part with the full bells and whistles from the Kemper, where a stereo configuration may be more useful

Hey HW - I have maybe a different question im almost sure you could help with. I use the unpowered toaster on fly dates and usually 2-3 guitars.
My primary guitar being a fairly hot set of pups (duesenberg) , the i usually have a strat or tele (or both) as well out with me. My big worry is I preset the live show by each preset is a song - page up/down per song. All is well, as long as I dont break a string. If I do I then have a massively different input gain depending on what patch/gain I have. I know its not perfect but im debating putting a small boost pedal on the front end as a fail safe If I end up having to use say the tele on a duesenberg patch. Let me know if you have any clever work arounds. Thanks 🤙🏼

Great video! Is it possible to simulate a wet/dry/wet set up with the 3 outputs? Left out pan hard left with effects; Right output hard right with effects; and direct out dry? I would use this for recording using a 4 input interface. Thanks for what you do!

Nice video but I'm sorry I have to contradict you here on one thing, and it's the SPDIF connection. Additional analog to digital conversions make a significant difference, maybe not noticeable for live performances but definitely noticeable for professional recording in studio.
Digital audio uses squared shapes to translate audio signal curves into digital information, which can be similar to pixels when talking about digital picture compression, every analog to digital conversion will deform the audio signal from a smooth curve to a curve made of many small peaks that kind of look like steps. The more you do that the more you'll be deforming the original audio curve and the more you'll notice the difference.
I've done enough tests with the kemper, comparing the same profiles recorded through SPDIF vs XLR under the same conditions and there is a very noticeable difference, maybe not relevant for your needs but relevant for other people's needs, me included.

You're correct but also incorrect about a couple things here: You're correct that he wasn't perfect in his assessment regarding analog and digital, and that there may be some audible changes for some people when converting signals back and forth, but you're incorrect that there are stair steps in the signal. That is an old myth that only appears visually on the computer when you're looking at a drawn waveform but that is not what is actually being played out of the speakers. Watch this video and you'll understand (he mentions it within the first minute, then explains in full detail):

Can you use the direct output to plug in a signal with only the amp sound (without cab) in it? But the main outputs still has the cab in it. So then you can use the input return of an of a real amp and use the cab on stage.

So, we could use both the XLR and 1/4 main outputs at the same time? As opposed to one or the other? Asking for this reason: XLR main outs would go to FOH, and 1/4" main outs go to drummer's x32 (he runs his own sound). Wanting to avoid a splitter for guitar, and if both outputs can work simultaneously, that is super ideal.

Thank you so much! The video was very helpful! i think ive decided i do want to record in stereo so im looking into a new interface. My sales rep was pushing me very hard to get one with spdif connections because of the reamping and says its crucial owning a kemper. but im honestly not very interested in it. i get how it can be helpful but its just something that doesnt interest me at the moment. So he was really pushing me on an Arturia interface. But i think i would rather get the UA Arrow and not have the spdif, and just use 2 XLR cables.

I thought the DI was for recording a faw guitar signal to later use for reamping not the monitor out. I thought the montior out was used for monitoring. I am confused now, have I been doing this wrong this whole time?!

Who has recorded out SDIF from the Kemper? I have been running the Left and Right XLR's but have seen where experienced Kemper users recommend using the SDIF allowing the signal to skip the D/A conversions needed when you output with XLR stereo (analog) and then convert via your interface's preamps. I will be trying this and will report back after a chance to run some comparison tests. I know there are some likely drawbacks with routing as I might need to split the guitar signal before the Kemper to send the guitar signal direct to a preamp (for revamping / editing) but maybe the direct out analog and SDIF can be outputted simultaneously? As for HW's explanation for always using XLR I respectively disagree as live playing will always have limitations but that doesn't mean we want to limit ourselves when we record. If the SPDIF out sounds better than go ahead and use it. Just my thoughts. Soon I will have the experience to choose what works best. I was hoping some folks on here have done this already and are willing to share their findings.

I use S/PDIF for kemper IO for both recording and reamping. I also run the monitor out to a power amp for bedroom playing when I want to move air, similarly to how you'd run out to a preamp. I do understand the viewpoint mentioned around SPDIF in this video for the sake of casual playing/monitoring/gigging etc, however it seems that the guy unfortunately doesn't seem to have an understanding of how ADAT conversion works, especially in the case of affordable audio interfaces (something like a scarlett 2i2 for example) which is why you hear the topic brought up often in the context you have. Another obvious advantage is the fact that if you did have an interface with 2 analog inputs and SPDIF io, you've got a great situation where you can stick the kemper in those digital ios and keep your analog inputs free for inputs that are restricted to analog only for convenience.

Help me, HW! My Kemper sounds weird! Renovated my studio last week and my business partner accidentally unplugged our (nonpowered) rack while it was still fully on, and when we got everything set up in the new racks it sounded all out of phase. Headphone out sounds normal, but the main outs sound hollow and weird in our DAWs, whether they’re connected stereo or mono, either XLR or 1/4”, one or 2 cables. No combination of setting or outputs seems to be doing the trick. Help me!

Why is the headphone out output different from the main out output? Headphone out sounds better.
But the recording goes to the main part
You must focus on the main out.
For your information, the headphone output volume is -20 and the main out volume is -3, but the main out sound is smaller and weirder.

from my personal tests and experience with the Kemper I'd say it's because of the additional digital to analog conversion, using a digital coaxial cable through the spdif connection (if your audio interface has a spdif input option) is the nearest you can get to the sound from the headphones output for recording. ToneJunkie is unfortunately quite wrong when he rests importance to this matter at minute 10 of this video. I had the same issue and tried out recording my Kemper with SPDIF, not just now but also years ago when I got my first Kemper and believe me there is a significant difference in sound quality compared to audio jack or XLR.
Also another advantage of using SPDIF is that you can pass a stereo signal to your audio interface with one single cable

Hi man, cool video, BUT...There is a dynamic difference between analog outs and the SPDIF. Don't forget you are changing digital to analog with the Kemper XLR-outs Then you are converting again analog to digital with your interface. Makes no sense in my case in the studio. And there is a sound difference between the outputs.
