Frusciante's a definite introvert; thinks more in theoretical and abstract terms, and is very intellectual. He's also clearly very spiritual and a "sensing" personality type. I can relate to him in a lot of ways, and it's fascinating that he's a humble, introverted guy, but was a huge factor behind the success of RHCP, a mega popular band.
Anthony is a very spiritual person too. If you listen to some of his interviews if not all , he often speaks of something related to spirituality. I guess they are all kinda spiritual people (less obvious for Chad).
@@Julsies7 I wasn’t thinking of the Myers Briggs personality categories when I wrote that. But after looking into that I think you’re right that he’s intuitive Think intuitive means abstract thinker, head in the clouds type The fact that he says his music is often inspired by spirits and ghosts def seems like intuitive personality type Seems like sensing is more practical and here and now
I could see why John left the band around this time. He was just in a totally different place mentally, creatively, and spiritually. Wish he would have stayed for one more album but he had to follow his heart at the end of the day.
the fact that he struggles so much to express a though, only proves how sincere he is at the moment-the though is stuck in his head and he struggles to formulate it to be as clear to us as it is to himself. recognizing his willing to cherish his music talent and to improve himself as a musician, made me want to do the same with my writting skills. One more thing that I find really inspiring to be,is John overcoming his demons. Really interesting how one person can stimulate you in many different ways but also sad that he ll never be aware of it.

I love how this interviews are always like 5 or 6 questions, but the video last 45 whole minutes because he is so passionate about the things he says that he can't stop talking
I've listened to this before I sleep for the past year and it knocks me out within 5 minutes EVERY SINGLE TIME. He has an incredibly soothing voice. Thank you John Frusciante with every piece of my soul
I got here because I really like his first two solo records. It makes me happy to listen to him talk about the things that are so relevant to all of us.
"I'd do this meditation where I would, try and imagine the smell of chocolate, and imagine the smell of chocolate and just hold it in mind... "the smell of chocolate".. Haha(laughs) ... And so smart it blows my mind, that all the things he says and, how he has trouble saying it because its hard to articulate the current/energy feeding through us, its so hard to explain. And it makes you feel dumb and stutter just trying to explain something. I can relate 110% to everything he says in this video as a musician. I've noticed ive learned ale this great knowledge through a combination of my influences and music theory I've learned combined with the feelings I can produce and have made, all are feelings that speak to me indirectly without words, but with a feeling that tells me and the feeling is so strong you just know the answers and essential guidelines that you follow to tap into it and its really just as simple as "if the feeling you get feels right after playing something" and the intensity of it will tell you the significance of the piece of music should be discovered further and to keep improvising unto you've explored all the possibilities and routes the feeling\sound can possibly go. Then you have all the components and foundation for the song that came through you. And then you use your conscious mind to put the song structure together like a puzzle." I swear I feel like the music I create and things I know and pit out are greater than me, mainly because a conscious human mind couldn't think up or make something so beautiful and the intense energy that radiates from all of it as a piece of art. Truly a precious gift learned through my dedication and passion and opening my mind for things flow in and out and to speculate and experiment with new sounds and vibes gradually learning the great pure knowledge of truth John speaks of in this video.
he has such a beautiful way of explaining it.... life, music, creativity. I think he is very close to the great being itself. Feels like he understands the purity of life .
I like that this great musician can be humble and recognize that the source of music is beyond the individual and shouldn't be made package to order by Hollywood. I like what he has to say, it seems honest and not regurgitated.
So spiritual and so much insight into music! I love listening to every word he has to say, love listening to all his music. He is so humble with a beautiful, loving and brutally honest soul. like Hendrix before him, I never thought I would hear another guitarist like Jimi (Hendrix) until JF came along, and I am a huge Hendrix fan! but lets not take anything away from Jeff Beck... Eric Clapton... Steve Vai... Joe Satriani... and many others I don't have time to mention now, who are still with us
John Frusciante is one of the most intelligent people in music today. He doesn't care about money or fame but is truly willing to follow what interests him. Every time I hear him speak I'm impressed with his views on life and music.
I love the last few minutes where John talks about how an audience bonds during a show because of the shared experience. That's one of the reasons I still go to shows even though I'm in my fifties. It's like a massive musical love-in amongst hundreds or thousands of strangers. It's a natural high that no drug can compete with! Both of my sons have had the privilege of seeing John play in small, intimate performances. I hope someday to see John with them. What a beautiful thing that would be.....
I really relate to John when he said he listened to one guitarist for awhile, then getting into someone else... I play guitar myself, and love all sorts of guitarist's...(and music) my partner (who I met when I played in the same band as her 6 years ago) is a classic trained musician (has her degree) and a multi Instrumentalist, really opened my mind. like the great Frank Zappa said... "your mind is like a parachute, it wont work unless it's open".. ok, some are open a little more than others... mine is wide open... I am 56years old now and don't want to miss anything.
I think he listened to more than one guitarist at a given time. He was just more into one at a time I guess. It happens to me, I go from listening to rock, funk, blues, folk guitarists all the time but that doesn't mean I stop listening to other people when I do.
anne - he's a profoundly different personality. I think there might be something in that theory as he is so different to when he was young. Obviously people are immature when they are 19 and that cockiness he had in the early days may have been a front but it is so different it's not the same person. I do think my overall traits between myself at 19 and now aged 50 are as vast. This video has been quite something for me... inspirational and in a way comforting. My life hasn't been that rosey at times and it's been almost permissive for me to be truer to myself and as a somewhat stifled musician put things into perspective as to what I can gain if I change my approach to what I do.
So amazing, he sums it up so eloquently, and his voice to my senses is just so honest it’s like listening to your best friend on the coach and just loving the way his voice expresses with integrity, honesty, wisdom
Yeah bro, I respect John because he's so honest. I don't know about you but I don't meet many honest people in my life. It seems most people put on a false face and are afraid to "say something wrong", i.e., say something their peers might reject or ridicule. I say to thine own self be true and John seems to embody that philosophy in everything he does. It takes courage.
I'm only 7 minutes in and I'd have to say this is the most coherent and forthcoming I've seen John in an interview, he seems so much more at ease here than in the past. Love John so much.
Do you want to understand?????? Close your eyes and listen to his music with an open heart. Once you see the love that emanates through his music, you have found the solution.
His perspective on life, time and our relationship to it is so unique and endlessly fascinating to me. I'm so used to the polished, boring media images we're fed and to see and hear someone who is so in tune with themselves and honest about it is a nice wake up! I'm coming back in my next life as one of his cats.
This interview is a gift to the universe. Everything he says about creating is right on, exact truth. Everyone who wants to create should listen to this as much as possible. He is such a gift to us!!!!
This is perfectly explained. I actually hear the music in my head and I try to play it on my bass guitar and it actually sounds good. If that's what happens when I'm 13, then I wonder what will be in the future.
i remember when this vid only had like 2000 view, i"m glad to see its growing.Truly he is a master off his craft. A beautiful soul witch emits love, creativity, spirituality, honesty, and passion along with much much more, i'm extremely happy we live in a world with John Frusciante after all "it could be so many other ways"
I really loved this interview, it´s my first time watching it but for sure it´s not the last. Thank you so much for sharing it. Luv to all - LEGALIZE JÁ!!
He chooses interesting notes, note combinations, and chord progressions. He uses repetition and building emotion very well. Master of tone and effects. I hear Hendrix, Gilmour, Zappa.
Thank you so much for posting this! When I first saw The Heart Is a Drum Machine I knew that there had to be more John interview and I'm so glad that now I'm able to hear more of his thoughts. He is such on inspiration to me. Meeting him and talking to him was one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had.
I'm not a musician but I am an artist and everything john says about where creativity and inspiration comes from I absolutely agree with. Music touches people in a way nothing else can, it can invoke such a huge emotional response and has done some wonderful things in life from inspiring others to create their own art to actually saving lives. I've seen that beautiful connection with both loved ones and strangers when I share my art, I can't see where the inspiration comes from when I paint but I can physically see on their faces that emotional connection and its a beautiful and humbling experience.
I love the RHCP music, and I love Anthony as a lyricist but for some reason, AK just doesn't come across as likable and endearing as John does, I can't put my finger on why.
Eccentricka1 Probably because Anthony is kind of a dick. Don't get me wrong, I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but Anthony isn't really that nice of a guy, at least not as nice as he portrays himself in Scar Tissue. Remember the Mr. Bungle feud?
+Eccentricka1 Essentially what happened was that Anthony Kiedis accused the band Mr. Bungle of essentially jacking their style. Not only were these comments uncalled for, but untrue, their self-titled album and their others, Disco Volante and California, sound nothing like anything the Chili Peppers have put out. Recognizing that he was being a dick, Mr. Bungle retaliated by mocking them in one of their performances. They each took on a RHCP identity and sung parodies of their songs. You can look up "Mr Bungle RHCP performance" to see it for yourself. Whereas most sane individuals would have either laughed about it or done nothing, Kiedis removed them from dozens of locations on a world tour of multiple bands (as the headlining act, the Peppers decided who stayed and who went). This was the beginning of the end for Mr. Bungle, they ended up breaking up in a few years (this was in 1999, I believe they broke up in 2003). Point is, Anthony's not really a nice guy. Flea, Chad, John, Josh, even Hillel were and are overall better people.
AlmostHuman102 Oh Wow, didn't know anything about that. But yeah, I'm not too surprised by that really, you know when you just get a feeling about someone? That's the feeling I got, the way Anthony came across in numerous interviews, like he had a real arrogant, douchebag side. I still think he's an awesome lyricist/artist though.
Agreed. Not only that, but he has seemed to come up with his greatest work and most interesting philosophical interviews while clean. I know people say drugs tap into creativity, but full-blown addiction really just destroys every aspect of a person's soul.
I think he is hypersensitive to emotion and sound. A blessing and a curse. It can take most of a lifetime coming to terms with the things that make you different than everyone else. It can be lonely, beautiful, maddening....

Thank you so much for sharing it.
Luv to all - LEGALIZE JÁ!!
Beautiful language (as in linguistics) he speaks. Abstract but easy to grasp. What a lovely person. Could listen to his view on life for days.
Amazing human, honest and a critical thinker , the world needs more people like him
I go to sleep listening to this, he has such a pure and profound understanding of music as an entity and its purpose in our lives.
The guy is such a pleasure to listen to. I'm not a spiritual person at all, but what he says is so poetic sounding but still makes such perfect sense.
love love love john, almost finished.. but god damn.. edit "psychic" out.. and its pure perfection
He chooses interesting notes, note combinations, and chord progressions. He uses repetition and building emotion very well. Master of tone and effects. I hear Hendrix, Gilmour, Zappa.
JF - such an incredible artist...the most beautiful soloist i've ever heard......MY FAVORITE MUSICIAN EVER!
AlmostHuman102 Nah I never heard about that incident, what was it about?
AlmostHuman102 Flea is the nicest and most friendly dude in the band.
The Heart Is a Drum Machine!! one of the best documentaries I've ever seen!! and this bonus video, soo amazing!! John is the best!
whenever I feel uncreative, I just pull this up and listen to john.
Agreed. Not only that, but he has seemed to come up with his greatest work and most interesting philosophical interviews while clean. I know people say drugs tap into creativity, but full-blown addiction really just destroys every aspect of a person's soul.
If you transcribed all the “and thens” from 26:06 onward you’re the most amazing transcriber ever!
Lol, yeah, I did. And thank you 😊
I think he is hypersensitive to emotion and sound. A blessing and a curse. It can take most of a lifetime coming to terms with the things that make you different than everyone else. It can be lonely, beautiful, maddening....
i seriously hope he lives forever! such an inpiration , what an idol
