There were just 2 mg express trains from secunderabad. Ajanta express( known as Godavari valley exp during british days) and bangalore exp. Both ran on Lalaguda YP steam locos. Purna YP took over from nizamabad. While Guntakal yp took over the bangalore ecp from gadwal. From Guntakal YL class locos took over the bangalore exp. From purna to mammad ydm4 took over ajanta express.
Secunderabad to Tirupathi / Bangalore venkatadri exp started late 1970 s . With train partition at Dharmavaram fully operated by guntakal ydm4.
Then mid 1980S started kacheguda to jaipur express worked by Lalaguda YP steam loco. This was done to crlebrate 100 years of lalaguda steam shed.

For most of the time, this train used to cross its opposite rake at Guntakal sometimes at Mantralayam Road. During olden days, train from SBC used to depart from 17:05 and from HYB side at 18:10. Train departing from HYB used to crawl behind Rayalaseema Express upto GTL and then behind Udyan Express from there onwards.once this train was diverted via Jadcheerla, Kurnool and Dronachellam.. it used to cross its opposite rake at Dronachellam. During My jobless days in Hyderabad, I used to sit in Jamai Osmania station and watch this train speed by. This train was the king of that route and was ripping through all small stations like sitafalmandi, arts college Jamai osmania, vidyanagar etc in a matter of 40-60 seconds. When gates were closed, hyderabadis had the practice of bending below the closed gates and crossing. the gate keeper used to shout "bangalore" "bangalore" to warn them that its not a slow local but a fast express approaching. Coming to signallin system. Secenderabad to Falaknuma was a double like Route relay interlocking system. from there onwards upto Guntakal it was a Semaphore signals for some years. later they were converted to MACLS

Thanks once again for your efforts Natarajan.
As I had said in one of my earlier comments, you are doing a wonderful job.
Here are some memories from my side about this train and the rail line itself.
My earliest memories of this train, when it was running as meter gauge, are from late sixties.
The train used to run with steam locomotive for the entire length. At Guntakal, the train used to stop for 1 hour or more to connect passengers 'to' and 'from' Bombay, traveling by Madras - Dadar express. This train generally used to stop on platform 6 at Guntakal. Whenever I traveled, I used to get down on platform 6 and walk to platform 5 and 6 which handled broadgauge trains.
Steam locomotive of this meter gage train used to reverse at Guntakal.
At Guntakal, the meter gauge line towards SECUNDERABAD via Dronachellam(Dhone) used to cross the broad gauge lines, as a rail flyover, and turn left. I used to see the large signage 'Vivekananda Nagar' once the meter gauge line left premises of Guntakal train station on way towards SECUNDERABAD.
Railway retiring room was located on first floor of platform 1 and 2(later relocated).
In course of time, Southern Railway replaced the steam locomotive from Bangalore to Guntakal, with a diesel locomotive, whereas, SCR continued to haul with Steam.
I have to mention that Railways had introduced Venkatadri and link express with total diesel traction, in late sixtees and that had a shorter running time.
Late Kengal Hanumanthiah, who was railway minister when late Smt Indira Gandhi was PM, had inaugurated the conversion of Bangalore to Guntakal MG line to broad gauge in 1972.
Ironically, the conversion Ernakulam to Trivandrum MG line to Broad gauge which was inaugurated much later by Late Kengal Hanumanthiah got completed by 1975, whereas, the Bangalore to Guntakal line conversion got completed by late 1982 or January 1983(if my memory has not failed me).
The meter gauge 85 and 86 trains used to cross each other either at Hindupur or Chakarlapalli around 13 00 hours. The MG train leaving SECUNDERABAD after 9 pm used to reach Bangalore around 3 30 pm or 4 pm next day.
The MG train reaching SECUNDERABAD around 5 am used to depart from Bangalore around 10 30 am on the previous day.
Trains 85 and 86 did not have vestibuled coaches, whereas Venkatadri link express had vestibuled coaches.
The other important train on this meter gauge line at that time was Mysore to Hubli to Mysore(MYS-UBL-MYS) which used to run partly as passenger and partly as mail. The up and down trains used to cross generally at Hindupur around 0100 hours(middle of night).
There were also other trains like Guntakal to Bangalore to Guntakal passenger (which was a boon to students in a way), that provided connectivity at Dharmavaram, Hindupur to Bangalore and Hindupur to Guntakal locals, Mysore Guntakal railcar(for some time) etc on this line.

1979 - My first job intervew at Bengaluru was by this train from Kacheguda. It was hauled by metre gauge steam loco. In the next several years, I made several journeys on MG steam loco. Delays were common. Sometimes special reasons - steam leakage, main shaft broke loose meant 6-8 hours delay ...! Gauge conversion was very slow and sloppy. The train used to run to the present schedule of 17603 KCG-YPR train. Day break and tiffin at Kallur station was a regular affair. This route and this train have come a long way now - BG double, electrified and with proposed Vande Bharat train.

Have childhood memories of taking this train in its diesel days during early 2000s to meet my cousins in Hyd. 1st time experienced chugging at Makalidurga ghat section during the early evening. Yelehanka, Dodballapur were small desolate stations with low platforms and huge banyan tress. Pure bliss !

Thanks for the video brother. Personally I like twin Alco hauled trains. The rhythmic chugging of twin alcos was a music for me and never forget the acceleration of the train. Personally I wanted this train to be hauled by Alco twins with atleast few runs after it gets LHB coaches. But sadly that has not happened.
Now Bangalore and Chennai will no longer see trains with twin alcos. Hyderabad will still see them for a year or 2

Really fantastic work of compiling the history. I never traveled this line, but saw these MG trains at Guntakal during my trips from Bombay to Madras in the 70s and was always so curious about them. What I like about your work is your desire to be accurate. Your work will become part of the historical record for decades (or centuries) to come. Humanity will be forever thankful.

Exceptional Efforts Nataraj to compile this incredible information regarding this train which many of our Rayalaseema people especially from Kurnool share extremely special relationship. A Tiny correction is in 1999 timetable is that timings are wrongly given at Mahbubnagar and timings of Gadwal were not mentioned as train use to have a halt all the time.

This train has got step motherly treatment from SCR.
It is highly revenue generating train, yet hasn't got upgraded to LHB rakes. Very dirty train running between the two IT hubs. Hope it's upgraded soon.
Anxiously awaiting VB train on the same route

It was our family's biennial LTC trip to ooty during 1999. We arrived at secunderabad in 7007 godavari express and stayed in my mother's uncle house in Moula-Ali railway quarters. Spent 3 good days visiting all places in Hyderabad along with few trainspottings at Moula-Ali and later traveled in 7085 from SC to SBC. Not aware of any info about locos during those days. All I can remember is that the loco was diesel one. A group of youth from north India was traveling next to us. One of the guys played guitar and sang few hindi songs 😁 enjoyed the trip all the way till SBC and arrived Bengaluru with cool climate 😍

Surely video on automatic signals would be interesting..similarily small things like.. why in Chennai central station has points inside the stations that too close to the end point of the platform.. videos on small things like this will be very interesting. I bet you will make huge difference compared to other rail fans. We appreciate your efforts in making all these videos. Thank you

Several trains of SCR Hyderabad Division (de facto Kacheguda) will get LHB rakes and P-7 links in 2024, including this one. The current ICF rake is is hauled by either LGD P7 or BZA P4.
Other important former MG trains to get LHB will be SC-CSMT Devagiri, and SC-TPTY Seven Hills (which follows the exact route of the MG Vekatadri Exp).
