If you just met these guys in the pub you’d think they were just regular nice blokes. They come across as shy, polite and well spoken. You’d have no idea at all that they had such extraordinary musical imaginations.
Oh my Lord Mick Karn is gorgeous! He was a brilliant bass player, and great had such great talent!! R.I.P. Mick you are really missed!’🙏🎵🎵😭📀🇨🇦luv you always!! LA
I met Mick Karn a couple of times when he did his art exhibition. He was such a lovely and talented person. I'm still sad to this day of his passing at such a young age.
I am a 20 year old gen z girl, late to the party. I wouldn't say I was "born too late", though, there is something magical about discovering all of the stuff older than me, an entire different generation, it sometimes feels like I'm there. It's a shame I can't find friends that would enjoy it with me though! Both Mick Karn and Peter Murphy have that mysterious, almost mystical aura about them, and their dark music is a one of a kind experience. Rip Mick Karn, I couldn't discover you earlier
Glad you are getting to discover this stuff! Even now, I'm finding music from this time period- like this Karn/Murphy album, which I knew existed but was pretty hard to find back when it was first released.
Welcome to the party Gen Z! As a Gen X'er who used to have a black and fuchsia Mohawk and lived for all things darkglam/darkwave, Bauhaus and Peter Murphy are IT! We SO still love them!
That's exactly what keeps musicians of the past alive in a way, younger people finding them later and connecting with the art. That's the beauty of great music 💗
Thank you guys, you are so kind! I love this music and constantly dive deeper and deeper to search for gold from the 60s/70s/80s era. I still listen to Mick Karn and his other projects regularly, they never cease to amaze me
The two coolest dudes ever. When the New Romantic and Goth/Batcave worlds finally met... It's clear they influenced each other heavily even after Dali's Car broke up. Peter Murphy began to take from more world music and avant-garde influences, culminating finally on Deep. Mick Karn was affected by Peter's dark, dramatic, gothic energy, culminating on Dreams of Reason Produces Monsters. This is literally the band I would go back in time to create (thank goodness it happened anyway, so I don't have to do that).
And Bauhaus didn't see themselves as Goth, they saw themselves as "dark glam". It's more a comment on aesthetic than musical sound. Actually Japan did the look and the "sophistipop" sound on Quiet Life before the Blitz Kids made it big.
I always say you're not a true Goth unless you sacked Rome. It's absolutely true that they were dark Glam; back in my black and fuchsia Mohawk days-40 years ago-we did not call ourselves Goth. Minimally we were punk but we were very dark. So darkglam/darkwave aptly suited us. We were absolute anarchists, defying convention, norms, etc...the Gen Z who ask me now let me see a pic of your hair back then. I reply, believe it not, NONE of us were walking around with a camera in our pocket. We eschewed all forms of capture.
I bought this when it came out, at a record store called "Rock Therapy" in Kansas City. I loved it and still do. I'm glad they were able to collaborate at the end of Karn's life, it's a fitting musical statement. Long live the King of fretless Bass!
Have to add another comment , LOVE ❤️ the video , the music is amazing , I can hear Mick’s amazing bass playing!!!!! Mick you were taken from this world to soon. Again. Sadly missed , never forgotten…R.I.P. Mick🙏😭🎵📀❤️💕
Thanks Travis !! To take the time to download the GREAT memories of the late 70’s and 80’s , music has never been the same!! I was a total 80 ‘s girl !! Loving so many bands like of course Japan, Ultraox , Gary Numan , Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Simple Minds …. the list goes on and on Kraftwork,,, I have an extensive record collection which I was going through last week . I am from Toronto , Canada snd saw pretty well every group I loved in concert absolutely brilliant!!! The memories are with me for a life time!!! The time has gone by so fast I am married 25 years , and have 2 grown sons… time passes faster every year, but the memories will never leave you!! I would love to talk to you on email or something , about the good old days , if you want , it would be up to you !! Take care Linda Ann August 2021… stay safe and healthy! 🇨🇦💕🎵📀⭐️🎵
Oh yes he was absolutely yummy but if you look at his solo work in the late 80s and early 90s look at some videos like cuts you up and Indigo eyes and all night long he absolutely clicked in his presence if you know what I mean he was his most beautiful in his mid-thirties the most true to himself and his persona. He's a beautiful man at any age but there's something about his mid-thirties that I don't know about you but it does it for me!
A ha... Besides the joy of listening to this great sound, and the mid 80's style video... I notice one of the locations in Malta is the big old place they used to film the prison exterior courtyard in Midnight Express. Which, although a great movie, was so greasy with negative/anti-Turkish stereotypes as to make my donner kebab seem like Lamb Jerky in comparison. They were such an intersting duo in that post new romantic scene. It almost makes me want to break out the eye shadow again. Super stuff... xxx :-)
Both, frankly, are deeply naff. (Though in the interview portion, Mick is a magnificent male specimen - in truth, he and Steve always rather rivaled Devastatin' Dave.) Without each other, the four geniuses of Japan (plus Rob Dean, bless 'im) went to utter waste. Shame, shame, shame on you, David, ya pretentious egomaniacal twat! I can just sense that you busted up the band for your own selfish reasons, despite what polite and self-effacing interview material's on record...
@@rebeccarosehirschfield7386 Sullivan and Khan actually went on to make better records post Japan in my opinion but your appraisal of the "most beautiful man in the world" sounds just about right!

These two music legends standing there being interviewed, and someone behind them is playing *pinball*.
Indeed. Pleb.
Hhhmm sigh!!
Yeah but it was a helluva game, man! You could speak to Kara or Murphy any time zzz

He was a genius!!!

He needed more hits, 80s were all about pop hits. These guys were the real musicians, but not hit makers like Duran Duran.

The soothing sounds of a pinball machine!
That bass sends shivers up my spine.
The layers of meaning and satire in the visuals and the quality of the music....so underrated and a gift to find here on youtube

Both incredibly gorgeous too!
This is really rather beautiful, visually and musically. Out there and ahead of its time of course.
This is FORTY years old!....My, the years have gone by fast.
Mick is so beautiful
The album is a natural progression for Peter Murphy and Mick Karn, It is challenging listen. I still listen to it.
DALI'S CAR was one of the most AMAZING PROJECTS of the music history. Two great musicians here.

Thought that had to be a Laserdisc! Quite amusing comment, this...
And they're, like, it's artier than yours...
Oustanding:)
The music was ahead of its time albeit a brief flashpoint in the history of avant garde dark wave.
and now so dated. not stood the test of time very well has it?

Mick Karn did a single with Midge Ure. It was brilliant I love it. Its called "After a fashion".

that video was so fucking cool
Pete had a Paul Weller circa Style Council vibe with that swept blond hair. He looked so Gothic but when he spoke he sounded like a geezer.
I love to hear him talk!
Weller and Julian Cope combined. The Vibe and Subtle Charisma.
Why did they shoot this interview in a youth club in Middlesbrough?
Newcastle tv studio.
Remark = too funny!
Best sounding pinball
Best use ever for a laserdisc
