and this is why Robert Glasper is doing it big in music, any other keyboardist would've approached the solo with runs or crazy chords but he just approached it in rhythmic sense, changing the entire dynamic of the room.
So true. Especially studying jazz at uni. The schools nature can shove this one way of approaching soloing where who can play the 'hippest fastest' lines gets the medal. Really good to separate yourself from that mindset sometimes.
this boy Robert always changes the dynamic of everything. I'm pretty sure the song wasn't supposed to go in the direction it went but it's repetition and stressing of a single note alters the direction of the whole song and you're literally on a roller coaster the whole way through. A spectacular musician he is.
This video makes me love SP even more than I already do. Yeah, Glasper changes the feel completely, but it was a great touch. I loved it. I especially love how Sput was able to get the band back into the original groove. It really shows how tight this band is!
I think this is the key. Glasper had a great solo, but off track with the feel of QuarterMaster (especially played fast). Sput brought it back to the right groove.
...the second Glasper solo re-inforced my respect for him as an artist. He fell back and played WITH the band versus fliping the groove into a "Double Booked" moment, unlike the first solo! I was like really Robert, can you let Snarky do they thang dude....lol
I love Robert Glasper so much. He took that solo and made it SO him. And I feel that's what soloing is all about! Self expression! And the band totally dug it and followed suit, and it sounded sick! Of course. Awesome.
Interesting musical concepts...I will have to come back to listen to this again a couple of times just so I can absorb it all Love Snarky Puppy & Robert Glasper!
this perfectly displays why the best bands, must always have the best drummer. Oftentimes, the best of them are lead by the drummer, or have the best there is and allows them to be free.
that's why they pulled him up there though. every musician has their own style and not every musician knows every style so glasper went up there and did his thing like everybody expected him to
Glasper did exactly what he needed. Sorry some of you don't understand, in the same way some did not understand Miles and Trane back in their day. Some people will always be behind the curve. Anyhow, talk is cheap, and Grammys speak. Guess who has the Grammy and who doesn't?
I was really excited when i saw this title I love Snarky Puppy and have enjoyed the Robert Glasper I've heard. 4:37 though... why? Everything was grooving and feeling good and then the whole tune gets derailed.
The thing that disturbs me the most is.....how young everyone is and how accomplished the musicianship is. The person playing the trumpet solo is triple tonging!! The horn section is so tight it squeaks! The rhythm section is outrageous!! I've been playing for 50 years and I can only dream about playing shit like that! It's embarrassing!
5 points to anyone who can give me the general 'classical' musical style that is explored in the keyboard solo that kicks in at around 4:15 of this live performance. It is a very courageous concept for a solo. 10 extra points to the person that can name the specific piece reference that is quoted at the start of this solo and rerails (not derails) the performance. It is truly a genius solo and reference.
is that lil john roberts on the drums yeah? if not whoever it is straight killed that solo on point! love snarky puppy and their album ground up is hot!
It's funny that when all this 'cool' music that people now listen to first came out, it was just as experimental as this. Truth is, you all will be looking back at this 50 years from now saying, man I remember when Robert Gasper invented that music. I was so blind then!!
That's mean. Well, if Robert Glasper is a classical music style then the answer is Robert Glasper. He basically pick up on the lick the trumpet played towards the end of the solo and morphed it, thus preserving continuity. As far as the specific piece, one could say minimalism / Reich as homesick2442 said, but knowing Glasper, that was just in his head/heart. Probably was listening to Wu Tang before the show...
was glasper drunk? i saw him in london a few years ago and he was a nightmare.. unfortunately fame gets to peoples heads.. amzing, incredible player but sometimes cant except that we pay his bills.
I played keys for a long time, so I try to stay up on the new guys doing it big. Corey Henry, Shaun Martin, Valerie Stepanov, and Yohan Kim are my favorite guys poised to be the standard bearers for this generation. Robert Glasper is in that other group that have their own niche...
i must say man, I met the guy, and he is quite a dick. But lets see a difference between an artist’s art and his personality.Although my meeting was unpleasant (it was kind of a meet and greet with fans and shiet) but his concert beforehand was really great. Dunno.
Maybe it's because I'm used to Chris Dave and Mark Colenburg, who are Roberts drummers. But during 4:20 and 5:20 you saw Robert looking behind twice, something like "come on man". After listening a few times, I agree the drummer plays a pretty nice groove.
Didnt particularly enjoy the glasper solo - felt like he made the band completely change the harmonic structure/feel of the song - would have liked to have seen him immerse himself in the snarky feel, not make them fit his mold. Still a big fan of his music, just not of his approach for this recording
before Glasper's solo came the drummer totally ripped it up.. but I got a little frustrated when the drummer didn't get a clue what Glasper was doing. Also, when he finally gets the beat, he is way to busy, destroying the vibe and all.. pity, I thougt it was a good drummer
You make I laugh... He has his own sound!!! You could just hear music and tell this is Robert Glasper he has influenced a lot of the upcoming pianists...
and this is why Robert Glasper is doing it big in music, any other keyboardist would've approached the solo with runs or crazy chords but he just approached it in rhythmic sense, changing the entire dynamic of the room.

A lot of guest musicians can 'fit in' with a band -Glasper makes the band 'fit in' with him. Amazing!

Robert plays so hypnotic and unrushed, it reminds me of when i was a little kid and just hitting the same keys on the piano was endlessly fun.
Damn man... the drummer holding it down!! Getting whiplash from that bump during Glasper's solo
Thanks for bringing it back Sput.
what are you talking about they were vibing and the drummer is one the most serious drummers in the biz right now
who else could have gone into a jam like that and completely morphed the song like Glasper did? creative and bold
...the second Glasper solo re-inforced my respect for him as an artist. He fell back and played WITH the band versus fliping the groove into a "Double Booked" moment, unlike the first solo! I was like really Robert, can you let Snarky do they thang dude....lol

Robert, Cory y Caleb en el mismo escenario, Momento épico!
Yes sir. Cory, Caleb and Robert all on the same stage. As a keyboard player I nearly died.
wow just like magic, Cory Henry turns into Robert Glasper!
This was so unbelievably ri-DONK and fun to watch!!!! Daaaaaaaaayumnmmmm!!!!
The more i listen to Roberts solo(s) the more i love them. Amazing work!
Interesting musical concepts...I will have to come back to listen to this again a couple of times just so I can absorb it all
Love Snarky Puppy & Robert Glasper!
Saw Snarky Puppy at Berklee last night. Blown away. They need to be headlining Newport Jazz Fest.
I couldn't have said it any better myself, thanx for articulating some of Glasper's musical art into words.
Loved it!!!!!!!! Robert Glasper, Cory Henry & Snarky Puppy collaborating. BEASTS!!!!!!!
this perfectly displays why the best bands, must always have the best drummer. Oftentimes, the best of them are lead by the drummer, or have the best there is and allows them to be free.
I jammed on that stage this Summer at the Berklee Piano & Keyboard Course!!!
I like how robert glasper just makes the music his...it doesnt matter how it was going its gonna be his
Swiftkillah1300 not what a good musician should do
@@yockinnottou lmfaoooo imagine tell robert glasper what a good musician should do
this was sooo dope my first time seeing both of them perform live
This is GOLD.
Mind. Blown.
This music happens in Philly several nights a week.... This good too
that's why they pulled him up there though. every musician has their own style and not every musician knows every style so glasper went up there and did his thing like everybody expected him to
yooooooooo, glasper is the truth, smoothed it right out, dope

Grammys definitely don't matter. I agree with everything else you said man. Glasper was being himself. That what was all that was needed
I thought both of these bands had grammys
My comment was before they won the grammy lol. Grammys still don't matter
This is completely silly, honestly.
@@papabearjohnson505 lol, but i certainly agree with grammy's than your opinion though.
I saw Snarky about a week ago (before seeing this video). I couldn't help but think of what they'd sound like with RG on keys, now I know!
I was really excited when i saw this title I love Snarky Puppy and have enjoyed the Robert Glasper I've heard. 4:37 though... why? Everything was grooving and feeling good and then the whole tune gets derailed.
Shut up idiot
That Glasper jam reminded me of Dilla so much.
16:38 they caught Rob off guard!!! lol
good eye, what a great moment
Simply Dope!

Yes sir!!!!
thanks

Great job being the glue Sput

my head just exploded.
The real musicians.
nice catch, dendy
BLAAAAZE!!!
Sput!!!!
Yup, Cory Henry is one of the keyboardist for Snarky Puppy. I'm sure you know he also plays organ too :)

I can think of Steve Reich and his phasing style
that was the moment where i was like, oh shit, he came to play too.
lold so hard
is that lil john roberts on the drums yeah? if not whoever it is straight killed that solo on point! love snarky puppy and their album ground up is hot!
@5:30 DRUMMER HANGS! fuckin, what a super group!
hahahahahaha he Robert Glaspered that tune so hard
Let's Go!!!!! 5:48
It's funny that when all this 'cool' music that people now listen to first came out, it was just as experimental as this. Truth is, you all will be looking back at this 50 years from now saying, man I remember when Robert Gasper invented that music. I was so blind then!!
Don't know much about music...just what I like...but there's some genius stuff going on here!
@dmusicky sorry sir but do you mind elaborating on what ur refering to? I cant think of it but id love to know lol if u dnt mind schooling me a bit
geeeeez im done!!!!
and they play it like much faster than the studio recording
That's sput
Challie Dogg on drums!
Dat trumpet solo...
Have you noticed that caleb sean mccampbell was playing too
Holy shit 4:00 - 8:30
is that corey henry?
Who is this tp!?
yep it's cory henry.
@dmusicky minimalism? and I think he's quoting Steve Reich
thats Robert sput Seawright...on drums
this tune has such a James Brown vibe at the beginning...

whos that drummer
@dmusicky lol mayne it resemble a toccata type thang but who da funk knows. 15 pts for RG straight up classical swaggghur
his playing here reminds me so much of 70's Herbie Hancock stuff
rachmaninoff prelude C# Minor....and then they tease a Radiohead progression from "Everything in its right Place"
This is quite ridiculous! Glasper is serious w/ it.
Is this pre-grammy Glasper, or after...? Either way, he did played that solo like he won a grammy>. LOL>!
_GoodMusic>.
Agreed - he alpha'd that song. Luckily everybody was into it, but I couldn't get away with that at a jam session;)
drummer is sick too...
He wasn't looking at the drummer. Sput was on the other side.
wow they really turned into dilla
That looks like Caleb
was glasper drunk? i saw him in london a few years ago and he was a nightmare.. unfortunately fame gets to peoples heads.. amzing, incredible player but sometimes cant except that we pay his bills.
Nope thats his style, take it or leave it. He enjoys being insouciant with his playing.
