Doctor Sleep is brilliant and should be spoken of with the same reverence as King's other classic films like Carrie, Shawshank and Dolores Claiborne! Mike Flanagan is a genuis and has made a classic that will endure (and possibly exceed) the legacy of The Shining and he will hopefully get the keys to the A Nightmare On Elm Street franchise, which he said he pitched to the Craven estate. Fingers crossed, he's earned the opportunity!
As someone who loves The Shining above all other films, this was a rock solid sequel and pleasant surprise. The recreated shots were so good I couldn't tell the difference. I love Mike Flanagan's other work as well, especially the exploring the residual trauma of growing up in Hill House in that series. But Flanagan has said his dream project is to adapt the Dark Tower, and I can't help but think he's the one guy in the industry right now who could pull that off. Fingers crossed that comes to fruition!
It was interesting to see how Flanagan adopted the ending from The Shining novel and put it at the end of the Dr. Sleep movie with Danny suffering Jack Torrence's fate with the fiery destruction of the Overlook. I know that killing Danny off left a bitter taste in some people's mouths, but I think that Mike did the best he could to honor King's novels and Kubrick's movie at the same time.
@@tammy6610 I've read both The Shining and Doctor Sleep. The ending for the movie, Doctor Sleep, is essentially the ending for the novel, The Shining, with Danny subbing for Jack Torrence. At the end of the novel, Doctor Sleep,, Danny is still alive, working at the hospice, and teaching Abra how to use her abilities.
@@KidSixXx I agree. I see the book and the movie as 2 different stories. Both good. The mini series was closer to the book. Truthfully I feel that Kubrick didn't really understand the book. I understand why King is not a fan of Kubrick's movie.
I don’t think that’s an accident. There are “parallels” between some of its themes and and some actual happenings that powerful people wish not be be too well known.
This movie is shit and completely missed the mark on what "the shining" (Danny's psychic power) is. Not a worthy sequel to the original. Doctor Sleep was more successful than it actually deserved.

Despite what King states, Kubrick's version will always be the best one in my opinion and I consider this to be a sequel to that film. This movie (and the book upon which it is based) is a great follow-up to a legendary story. I love this film and would absolutely be watching a film about the future adventures of Abra Stone (Kyliegh Curran), possibly with a force ghost cameo from McGregor. 😊❤
It's a very good film that sadly slipped because of the name. It's silly, but it really needed the words "The Shining 2" tagged to it, and pushed more.
I think it's the opposite. The marketing pushing that it's a sequel to The Shining may have alienated more people. The Shining rewatchability differs from other horror movies. I was more interested in the new characters and story than I was in the nostalgia.

This may have been commented on below - but the director’s cut! Oh man! What a movie. More is more. Flan is a long-form storyteller of the highest caliber. Last week I re-watched Midnight Mass. I LOVE the long monologues. It’s as if he combines King, horror, drama, theater, cinema, novels & television to create something new. Can’t wait to see what this inspiring storytelling filmmaker does next. Thanks for the great video!
A detail in Rose’s costume has haunted me since I first saw this movie. The small items she has braided or pinned into her hair are not ornaments. They are souvenirs from her kills. Look closely and you’ll see them. Children’s trinkets, hair ties, bicycle part. That still stops me cold.
I love horror movies and I hear good things about the director. And I liked dr. Sleep much more than I thought. I haven’t had time to watch as many as I’ve liked to the last decade plus. I’ll have to check those out. I haven’t heard of them
I think it was such a wise idea to not do the de-aging technology on original actors at that time. There have been mixed results with that uncanny valley look going on. I thought the new actors playing the parts did a fine job! Great movie
I always took that the character looks were due to Danny's pictures in his head of what they looked like, he hadn't seen his father since he was five, this is the best projecting image he could due. The same as everyone from the Overlook. That is why the suddle change.
I really love this film. You CANNOT hope to beat the Kubrick film, but focusing on Danny’s broken soul, the redemption arc becomes more engaging and important. I wish more horror movie sequels could aspire to this.
What's funny about that poll in 2013, he's now spearheading a definitive Dark Tower adaptation. I like that Flanagan chose lookalikes. If horror comes from familiar faces we're not as scared because we know what they're capable of, so to speak. When we get it from strangers, we are more fearful.
Great video about one of my all time favorite sequels to my all time favorite King novels and perfect adaptations I've ever seen. This video needed to be longer, that set design for the overlook is wonderful.
Was hesitant to watch even if the Shining isn't what I would call a high personal favorite of mine. It's still a classic, and sequels to older films aren't always worth it. But this was so good. I think Doctor Sleep builds off so much from Kubrick's film, adding more horror to it that isn't just purely ghosts. It terrified me - and moved me. Everyone was perfectly casted, and the atmosphere was rich - and damn, I really thought getting more spiritual and all would have tanked the story but it enhanced every loose thread that the Shinning left to be answered. Satisfactorily, at that. And that in itself is a feat. Answering the lingering questions in a horror film always seems to water down the story - to the point that it's no longer scary. But Doctor Sleep doesn't do that. Part of me wishes that the same group of people could have been handed the reigns when it came to IT Chapter Two - Pennywise's origins to be more precise. I think IT Chapter Two loses that cosmic other-worldly horror that is elevated here within Doctor Sleep, which is a shame. But atlas - back to the main point - Doctor Sleep is a masterpiece, and a worthy sequel/adaptation of not only Kubrick's work, but King's as well.
YES!! I had to watch Dr Sleep in 2 parts. We stopped right before the return to the Overlook and I was soooo haunted about returning to finish it. Up pops home video and I got to watch the end. I need to watch it whole again, though, and this video plus it being on Max is making me think that is something I should do now.
Love this movie. It’s such a trippy horror movie with great story and acting, like The Shining meets Inception. So much to dissect and you guys did a good job with this deconstruction. 🙂👍
This is so good. While some scenes from the film were hard to watch (sometimes I can't divorce myself from the fact that it's a work of fiction), I have no doubt that this film (like the Kubrick film) will live as a cult classic. I'll have no problem reading the book - it's a whole different imaginative experience. Kudos to Mr Flanagan. PS, I love "our lord and saviour Stephen King" LOL!😊
I absolutely loved this film it actually terrified me for the first time since i was a kid but terrified me as a parent. When they torture and kill the boy and the girl is screaming and seeing this and its just so hard to watch great horror. I was in tears finding myself wanting to look away.
I enjoyed this movie. I really liked the Character of Rose and Ewan McGregor was good as an adult Danny. I do feel the final act really suffered from pigeonholing the hotel into the plot and it brings the movie down for me. The talk between Danny and Jack was excellent, but it didn't have to be filmed in the hotel bar.
Dr. Sleep was one of the best movie viewing experiences of my life, but probably not one that can ever be repeated. First off, I was a big (ok HUGE) King fan earlier in life, but, except for he IT movies, haven't paid as much attention to him more recently. So I didn't know know there was a sequel to the Shining. Secondly, when I decided to stream it all I knew about it was horror movie + Ewan McGregor. I chose it as something to put on as background noise, and I had ZERO expectations of it being good. When the movie started and I put together what it was, my jaw dropped. It was the equivalent of clicking play on Rogue One somehow not knowing it was a Star Wars movie, and my ultimate "I wasn't expecting anything and got caught by total surprise and completely blown away" movie.
The Two Movies That I Saw Back In 2019 (Before The Pandemic) Was Joker And Doctor Sleep And Those Were Bangers. And I Watched Doctor Sleep Again On Hbo's Free Preview Weekend Back in 2020 And it Was The Director's Cut Version With Both The Shinning And Doctor Sleep They're The Best.
I remember that Mike Flanagan wanted to direct a prequel to THE SHINING, titled Halloran, but it was cancelled due to the poor box office performance of Doctor Sleep.
I heard they had to change a bunch of things from the Dr. Sleep novel to make it more of a sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, which notoriously changed a lot of stuff from the original book.
Everybody says Jack is dark, but there's a difference between being dark and being irritable. My dad was the latter, but he was a good dad and loved spending time with us.
How easily this movie could have been a disaster. A sequel to a film that's considered one of the best horror films of all time and also a film directed by Stanley Kubrick. But I was very impressed with it. Very well shot, written and acted. It can stand proudly beside The Shining as a worthy sequel.
recently video of stanley admitting to the faking of the moon landing video has surfaced. boy its wild. of course we went to the moon but the footage was Stanley's doing by his own admission
Did this movie do well? Probably not...most movies that I like are a bomb. Actually, Kubrick's version took a while but, as I've got older and have come to appreciate that director's overall excellence, the original "The Shining" film has REALLY grown on me. I think Flanagan's "Dr Sleep" was a great sequel.
Only ever seen the Directors Cut, memorable characters (Rebecca Ferguson as Rose The Hat and Kyliegh Curran as Abra are sensational) An interesting concept and memorable set pieces… but honestly it was not necessary. Still rattles me that Nicholson couldn’t return as Jack… Jack Nicholson IS Jack Torrence. Kubrick’s film left the tale as an enigma and that’s one of the many reasons its the classic that it is (and yes I prefer the film over the novel anyday)
When it first came out, "The Shining" received very mixed reviews. It was even nominated for two Golden Raspberry Awards: Shelley Duvall (Worst Actress), and Kubrick (Worst Director). It was only with time that this movie was reevaluated, and given it's due as a horror classic.
Doctor sleep was iconic but in it’s own way. Waaaay better than most horror stuff to come out but it had to live in a shadow of one of the best in the genre
This is an "okay" movie... not even remotely up to Flanagan's other works, but it's "okay"... As long as you pretend it has NOTHING to do with The Shining. It meanders, has a lot of balls in the air and feels like someone fast-forwarded through the original movie, put bookmarks on fan-serve, then strung the fan-serve together loosely. Again, an "okay" horror movie, sub-standard Flanagan movie and DREADFUL sequel to The Shining.
A decent movie but a bit rushed. It's obviously difficult adapting a book and this falls into the trap of quickly skimming through all the plot beats rather than cutting what it can in order to let the story and the characters breath. Rebecca Ferguson is perfectly cast, but Rose is just not threatening in this film. Abra just defeats her at every opportunity. Ewan McGregor was a great choice too, he can do boyish but also has a killer grin. Very Jack.
Just watched it for the first time about a week ago... Going in.. _man, I hope this doesn't suck_ 10 minutes in... _she sounds just like Shelley Duvall_ 30 minutes in... _alright,this is pretty good. Is that Jocelin Donahue?_ An hour in... _Whoa, I'm enjoying this_ By the final scene, I was in love with it. Really good movie. 👍
Doctor Sleep is my favorite book. The fact Mike Flanagan skinned the story, taking the intelligence, cleverness, and heart out, only to make an Kubrick sequel is dissapointing. The character lost all of the cliche defying traits only to replace with the same cliches. Some parts were great Jacob Tremblay being attacked is haunting. And Dan talking to possessed jack was heart breaking. The ending was insulting. He took the Shinning's book ending and pinned to the the donkey of this production. The book wasn't about how scary the true knot were in fact they were quite pathetic and the heroes were extremely competent. The book was about Dan learning to live and dig himself out of his pain, trauma, and substance abuse to become a good man. Doctor Sleep is an amazing story! Too bad Flanagan didn't get that.
I finally got around to seeing this one one of my flights home last year. It started off messy (which the book does), but I ended up enjoying it mostly. I really don't care for the ending though. King needs to stop taking potshots at Kubrick, like what he did in The Outsider, which is one of the worst books I've ever read. The book The Shining isn't very good anyway. The so called "character development" is nothing but boring cliches.
The Shining is an amazing film experience. In my top 10. Maybe even top 5. But let’s be honest. It’s a REALLY shitty adaptation of the book. Dr. Sleep had A LOT of heavy lifting to do in order to align the two. I loved it.
Incorrect. people have been analyzing, theorizing and celebrating the movie for over 40 years. There are documentaries, thousands of articles, blog posts, and you tube videos dedicated to the pursuit of understanding this film and the interest in it far from dwindling has only grown. The same cannot be said of the novel. The film is inarguably the more important of the two pieces of art in terms of truth to the struggles of life and it's overall cultural impact. A faithful adaptation of the source material gave us The Shining TV miniseries by Kings' favorite pet-hack director Mick Garris.
Rose the hat when she was at overlook hotel and having psychic abilities not sure why she was not able the sense why Danny brought her there or what was going in that hotel. I know Danny was closing his mind and not having her to read or see his mind. But overall she should of known that Danny had those hungry killing ghost locked up for a reason and why he brought her there.
I'm still mad they killed Danny it's not because we needed that happy ending or his redemption and whatnot but how is he supposed to become Tony and save himself in the Shining if he dies? Don't get me wrong love the movies but I do prefer the books
I was mainly mad about it (it did not ruin the movie for me, however) because I loved the character so much that I was mad that that was his end. I thought, the man has been through enough, and for him to go out, in that damn hotel, was just so...unfair. I think it might have made the movie better because I didn't hate it because it was stupid, I hated it because it made me feel mad and hurt. I guess that's a testament to the writing and acting.
I LOVED Dr. Sleep both the novel and the movie I do need to say that I don't like at all Kubrick's version of The Shinning and prefer (loved) the '90s miniseries version of it. I've always believed that Kubrick's film is overrated, and don't think is scary. Truth to be said I find two scenes very creepy ans disturbing because they were well done, that two being the blood exploding from the elevator and the twins. And that's all But in the case of Doctor Sleep, dude! Flanagan did an amazing job constructing his vision Having read the novel, I find it a wonderful adaptation, worthy of the novel, even with the changes done (and making ot a sequel to the '80s film)
I wish more people had seen this in the theater because it’s absolutely brilliant

I watched this last year and I loved it.
Great Movie and Great Video.
You didn't mention the directors cut of the film. Which was much better and felt more complete than the theatrical version
I remember that Mike Flanagan wanted to direct a prequel to THE SHINING, titled Halloran, but it was cancelled due to the poor box office performance of Doctor Sleep.
I would really like to see that. Dick was a very interesting character, both in the book and the movie.
So underrated, I very much appreciative this film
Great movie. Will be appreciated more in the future.
I heard they had to change a bunch of things from the Dr. Sleep novel to make it more of a sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, which notoriously changed a lot of stuff from the original book.
Book was really good. Danny has a blood link with Abra.
Everybody says Jack is dark, but there's a difference between being dark and being irritable. My dad was the latter, but he was a good dad and loved spending time with us.
This is what a horror superhero movie looks like
How easily this movie could have been a disaster. A sequel to a film that's considered one of the best horror films of all time and also a film directed by Stanley Kubrick. But I was very impressed with it. Very well shot, written and acted. It can stand proudly beside The Shining as a worthy sequel.
Love that film. So good
This sequel just shines on its own ❤ underrated
Rebecca Ferguson scary AF
Joblo should talk bout Wes Craven The People Under the Stairs
recently video of stanley admitting to the faking of the moon landing video has surfaced. boy its wild. of course we went to the moon but the footage was Stanley's doing by his own admission
King's book is just another horror story, Kubrick's movie is simply a masterpiece.
The director's cut was so nice it's kinda dumb that these cuts aren't available in cinemas as an alternative
I love this movie and the baseball boy scene will forever haunt me. One of the worst death scenes I've ever seen 😖
Underrated movie
This movie was amazing in theatres
This is an "okay" movie... not even remotely up to Flanagan's other works, but it's "okay"... As long as you pretend it has NOTHING to do with The Shining. It meanders, has a lot of balls in the air and feels like someone fast-forwarded through the original movie, put bookmarks on fan-serve, then strung the fan-serve together loosely. Again, an "okay" horror movie, sub-standard Flanagan movie and DREADFUL sequel to The Shining.
My take as well
A decent movie but a bit rushed. Very Jack.
King always had good starts to ideas, but sometimes he lost track towards the end.
Just watched it for the first time about a week ago...
Going in.. _man, I hope this doesn't suck_
10 minutes in... _she sounds just like Shelley Duvall_
30 minutes in... _alright,this is pretty good. Is that Jocelin Donahue?_
An hour in... _Whoa, I'm enjoying this_
By the final scene, I was in love with it. Really good movie. 👍
Brilliant stuff
I would love to see a Dick Hallorann prequel
Leave this sequel as a standalone. No prequel no Ambra spinoff.
Rose the Hat was so beautiful, but so fkn terrifying
This movie is awesome
Thanks for the Video 😀
Man, feels like this needs a part II and part III
This movie was really good. Sometimes truth is greater than fiction, for those with eyes that see.
This movie was amazing
I enjoyed the movie and the novel, but prefer Danny’s fate in the book.
Danny's spirit is still around. He was talking to Abra.
Leo and Slater seem a little too on the nose. I thought Henry That's was a great choice. He's way underused anyway
People poop on it, but it's great.
The book absolutely shat on IT!!!.... Good enough though....
Flanagan basically made an origin xmen movie with dark tones
I really enjoyed this movie. So good!!!
I LOVED Dr. Sleep both the novel and the movie
I do need to say that I don't like at all Kubrick's version of The Shinning and prefer (loved) the '90s miniseries version of it.
I've always believed that Kubrick's film is overrated, and don't think is scary.
Truth to be said I find two scenes very creepy ans disturbing because they were well done, that two being the blood exploding from the elevator and the twins. And that's all
But in the case of Doctor Sleep, dude! Flanagan did an amazing job constructing his vision
Having read the novel, I find it a wonderful adaptation, worthy of the novel, even with the changes done (and making ot a sequel to the '80s film)
Great movie!!!!:)
Liked his first stuff but this ans fall of the house of usher, I will watch any Mike Flanagan puts out
I want to see a sequel to Salem’s lot❤
This movie is King explaining to you what the “G0ld Ju1ce” is, and how it’s made.
I really want to see an Abra Stone film.
Kubrick mocked the pretentions of pop novelists - doctor sleep reinforced the pretentions
I absolutely loved Doctor Sleep. I feel like it was a much better movie than The Shining. The characters were more relatable and interesting.
How the fuck could anyone be disappointed by Kubricks version? It's a horror masterpiece.
I don't care much for Rebecca Ferguson, but she was amazing as Rose the Hat.
