Mike Flanagan deserves praise for many things, but one thing he needs more credit for is how well he directs kids. It's no coincidence all the children in his movies give good performances, though plenty of credit goes to them too. Communicating complex, emotional, and often frightening concepts to children is a special talent that not a lot of directors have, regardless of how talented they are in other areas. The fact that he's the common denominator between these good performances point to this special ability.
Insanely enough, he didn't even direct Jacob Tremblay. Jacob showed up, Flanagan asked him if he wanted to run through it, but Jacob had been rehearsing at home and said no he just wanted to do it. Everything about Jacob's scene was entirely his own creation, and Flanagan had very little to do with it other than asking Jacob if he wanted to be in the film.
@@SkylerDeWitt Thats awesome! I still wanna point out how many directors would trust a kid like that? Flanagan has a way with directing kids and part of that is trusting them and giving them space to play, not micromanaging their performances. Jacob needs to continue in acting for sure

Flanagan reached out on a whim, Tremblay said yes because The Shining was his favorite movie, and Tremblay said, "I know what I'm going to do, it's going to be really scary!" Flanagan was like "Yeah, okay." Then Tremblay showed up to a job that he was overqualified for, traumatized everyone, then left waving and saying, "Thanks guys, that was fun!!" I really think 99% of the credit belongs to Tremblay.
Billy's death was so tragic. The coolest dude in the whole movie, got ratioed by snakebite telling him to kill himself, and then him proceeding to do so

That scene is hard to watch. I think especially if you have kids yourself, which I do. That shit hit me hard. The sad part is that type of stuff and worse happens for real everyday. You don't fuck with kids bro.
I really liked the scene when Danny is about to die in the fire, and the ghost of her mom appears to be with him in his final moments. In a previous scene Danny mentioned how when his mother was close to dying her face got so covered in flies that he couldn't bring himself to look at her to comfort her. But in the end, he can finally see her face, and she comforts him.
Also I think it's also mentioned how Wendy could never look Danny in the eyes because she saw Jack in his face. So Wendy could never look Danny in the eyes as he was growing up and Danny could never look Wendy in the eyes as she grew old and died. So when Danny is dying and they're looking at each other, they can finally look each other in the eyes
It also shows how a mother's love is unconditional and everlasting, because unconditional love through horror and trauma is something that King himself always tries to put in his books.
I also loved the risk that came along with it and the fact that Danny doesnt just get away scott free from it by running away while they're distracted. Like, he knew what would happen if he released his ghosts and that's what happened.

I am honestly surprised Danny Lloyd made an appearance at all, though I am glad he did. He was my biology professor in college in my first trimester and he made it very clear that you were to never mention The Shining in his room or you would be kicked out for the entire trimester. He was a really cool dude that was pretty laid back, but he never wanted to talk about his time in the The Shining. Good on him for making the cameo and I hope he had a good time doing it!
You know, seeing adults being killed in movies is so common, but seeing a child dying, who's parents are most likely going to never recover from that and say its their fault forever, is very sad, and just makes people want to crank the guts out of the people who did this with a meat ginder. Amazing job from Jacob.
I have to admit it's the baby dying bit that got me.....I nearly turned it off there and then as I have a chikd the same age.....I phone my mum crying then got the courage to watch the rest of the movie
Not just kids dying. If it was a slasher and someone just decapitated a kid in a horror movie, it'd be fine with me. It's how long and drawn out it I'd. The kid begging for his life as he's violently drained of life. That's what's disturbing
Having a child walk home alone in a remote area in this day and age is just asking for trouble. I was a bit pissed at his parents that they didn’t arrange a ride with one of his teammates or something.
I really enjoy the “they’re starving” line when Ewan opens his boxes and she realizes what’s about to happen. It’s really well done and satisfying to me.
It was good, but I much like the book version of the ending better, minus the fact that it didn't happen at the Overlook Hotel. Or at the very least, the fact that Jack Torrance helps his son in the fight. I'd have liked that in the film.
Imagine being professional actors who spend their whole lives practicing their craft and then getting SHOOK by the scene you're filming. If that doesn't tell you how good Mike is at his job then I don't know what will. Props to the kid too for his work. I felt soooooooooo bad for him during that scene.
The child actors knocked this film out of the damn park. Kyliegh Curran played Abra AND Danny and managed to make it work, and Jacob Tremblay was an absolute trooper being able to scream and cry that convincingly.
I shed a tear for future Oscar winner Jacob Tremblay when he died in this kill count. I saw this movie in theaters and I've watched both the theatrical and director's cut of the film on Blu-Ray. Jacob is just that brilliant an actor. Massive props to Mike Flanagan and Rose Ferguson as well.
The actors being worried and shaken up by the kid makes me think of the scene where Pennywise's Actor (Bill Skarsgård) was scaring a kid and kept asking if they were okay afterwards. A few of the actors (I wanna say Fin Wolfhard) talked about it in an interview. Just reminds me how amazing these actors are as people, and how great they are as Actors, acting ruthless when it's not their true nature.
It was the scenes Bill filmed with Jack Dylan Grazer where Bill thought he was actually really scaring Jack only for Jack to spring up and nonchalantly say something along the lines of “great job, really nice work”
I love how Rose's arrogance is shown glaringly throughout. From her not wanting anyone more powerful than her, to almost each line. Once her flock is killed, she can easily survive for many more years off the leftover shine, but her arrogance/weakness ultimately ends up being her downfall as she continues to chase after such a stronger opponent.
She really shouldn't have picked a fight with the two most powerful Shine users alive at that time. The only reason Dan initially lost and had to open the cases is because she literally doped herself up beforehand.
Danny's death scene made immediately burst into tears the second his mom's ghost came on screen. It's that feeling of "why the hecc am I crying, this isn't that sad." But it is. The only thing they could've done better is also include jack torrance, since he wasn't bad if a person, just overridden by the hotel and his past.
I was tearing up as well! It’s a beautiful moment where Danny gets to say goodbye to his mom in a way they both deserve. It’s especially nice because Danny was just seeing evil entities so it’s nice he also got someone special to him. This scene resonates because. Like King said, “there is no true horror with out also having hope.”
I don't know if Jack being there would have worked, Danny already made peace with him through the drink scene, letting him move on (Or at least, that's how I interpret it)
The movies had Jack Torrence be more of a prick to his family compared to the novels. Sadly, we followed that logic. BUT, we could say that Jack himself has long since passed, all that’s left of him is his face for the hotel to use (as he’s exclusively referred to as Lloyd in the subtitles, by himself, and by the hotel as an extension)
That scene alone is one of the reasons I've hesitated buying the film. The movie is fantastic, but having a son myself, it was easily the most uncomfortable thing I've seen in a long, long time. Despite how well it was acted, I'm not sure I could sit through it again.
I like the little references to things they cut out, like Abra calling Dan Uncle Dan. In the book Abra’s mom is Dan’s half-sister from an affair Jack had, so he’s literally her uncle in the book.
Unless you're a shitty horror movie like "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer", which was directed by the same guy who directed that shitty Slenderman movie, that movie was so dark, and by dark I mean I CAN'T SEE SHIT SOMEONE TURN ON THE FUCKING LIGHTS
Its really sad to hear. Normally the villain says "this won't hurt a bit" or "it will only hurt for a second" but she straight up tortures him, savoring every scream he lets out.
That scene where Jacob Tremblay’s character gets killed is maybe the most uncomfortable I have ever been in a movie theater. Gotta give the kid some major acting credit though. It feels very real.
I remember reading a piece talking about Jacob Trembley’s work on this movie and how he put his all into it and then when the scene was over, popped up and walked over to craft services while all the adults were wracked with trauma. So if you watch this and feel bad, just remember that he had a fun time and second after they finished, he was eating a cookie or something.
Fun fact: The way Abra uses her shine is the same as Emerald's semblance in RWBY as I remember. I think that's neat with the fact that her actor loves the show.
After what she had done the Baseball Boy, I smiled big when Rose the Hat screamed in pain later in the movie. As the expression goes “You reap what you sow”, and I was so happy when she finally got hers.
I went to the toilet after that bit, was way too disturbing for me. Came back and sat through the rest of the movie. Don’t know how my dad sat through that bit...
Abra morphing her face into that of her favorite cartoon character fits nicely with the whole "weaponizing imagination" angle psychic combat often takes in King's work.
I still owe James for his ‘The Shining’ kill count. My buddies asked me if I wanted to go see Doctor Sleep and I told them yes, but I had never watched The Shining. Came here to watch the kill count and to at least know what was going on. Went to see Doctor Sleep and it was one of my favorite movies in a long time.
@@iappsforipod Correct, they really wanted to make a sequel to the film The Shining not the book but its still good either way. Doctor Sleep was like their acknowledgement to Stephen King for 'messing up' his work in the first place because King did not like what Kubrick did to his book at all which is why they killed off Danny the way Jack should have died in the first film and its the whole thing, not just a fiery explosion but corpse possession too There sure is a lot more character deaths in the film than the book
Abra's RWBY-inspired mind trap goes further than just her Emerald wig, since additional set dressing includes props and wall decorations that are the colours red, white, black and yellow, the base palette and namesakes for the four lead characters of that show. That attention to detail must've been really exciting for Abra's actor, too.
RWBY in a Stephanie King movie, suggested by Abra to use a semblance from the show, to have Nick give the go ahead to add it in the movie. To have James talk about it in one of his kill counts. My UA-cam world just came full circle. I can die happy.
I like how they specifically chose Emerald from RWBY for Abra to be a fan of. Not only is Abra's actor Kyleigh Curran a fan of RWBY in general, but they look alike (both young black females), and Emerald's specific power is the ability to generate illusions in other people's minds just like Abra can. Plus they both fight people with the name "Rose".
Idk if it makes it any easier for anyone else, but if I wanna fake cry to screw with my friends/family, the easiest and most convincing way for me to do it is to try and "open" my nostrils, and focus more on snot, spit, and just gross sobbing crying lol It looks way more pathetic(and would ruin most movies lol), but it's funny as hell and seems to be the best way to irritated my eye-ducts without actually touching them with my hands.
@@mutt9779 damn I just consciously irritate my eyes (without you touching my face) and I start to cry, initially I had to think of bad memories and sad moments, but using that would be better if you want to full on cry and yell, which isn’t that good. So I just irritate my eyes to cry instead, and I force snot to come out ( I practiced it for months to do it), change my voice to sound exactly how I do when I cry and stutter to get the perfect crying.
I’d like to think at the ending scene where Dan dies in the blazing fire is so symbolic to how his father died in the icy snow, Dan had did what his father couldn’t, so he ends up being satisfied and is doing more than fine in the afterlife knowing he did better in life now and he successfully helped a special someone in his life out and how to be stronger from the past experiences he’s learned and to teach that someone how to avoid the evil that haunts them, and forever putting an end to the nightmares permanently. The fire ultimately representing the warmness, sweetness and satisfaction of his final moments and he even goes out in a blaze of glory compared to the fading icy cold fate of the movie’s predecessor’s antagonist.
The Shining was the first horror movie I watched, and it was with my father. This franchise means so much to me, and I want to thank you for bringing me back to my childhood with The Shining and Doctor Sleep Kill Counts. I remember asking you to do The Shining KIll Count back at 2019 Monsterpalooza, and you gave such a polite response. I love the channel and will always be a member. Thank you so very much James! What really gets me is how Stephen King clearly loves this movie too. I think it must be an amazing feeling to see someone else understand your own art so well, and to do it such justice.
That's exactly what blew me away about the film. It managed to bridge the gap between King's novels and the Kubrick film in a way that felt organic to the story. It's a fantastic film, Mike Flanigan knocked it out of the park!
I’m not even done reading The Shining, and I can already understand why the movie version of Jack would upset King. Any nuance is obliterated in favor of just making him angry and creepy from the start in Kubrick’s film.
@Avery Hughes that's exactly why I don't like the movie. It's much less compelling to see someone who is clearly already an asshole turn violent than seeing someone trying so hard to over come their demons lose that battle.
i remember absolutely sobbing watching jacob’s character die. this movie is an all time favourite for me. “hereee’s obi” has also gotta be one of my favourite lines ever on the kill count 😭
I’ve seen it when I saw it in theaters and nice detail. The reason this happens is because Danny’s eyes r blue and his obviously talking through her body.
@@joniwaly2293 In a way it makes sense not having a clear definition of what the shining is, magic is not science so rather than a detailed, deductive knowledge about the shining we only know about it through the inductives we make up and learn about from the characters. Stephen King might not be sure about what the shining is but its not like it detracts from the whole fantasy of his books.
That scene messed me up big time the first time I seen it. Just such a brutally horrifying and depressing scene. I rarely get "disturbed" with horror, but that scene definitely unsettled me.
The scene of the lady and her baby is so unnerving and horrifying. Like… Danny was probably sleeping next to a dead woman and then her baby ends up starving to death. That scene always makes me extremely sad, especially when she said that they (as in police or neighbors) hadn’t found them yet. Also the scene where the little baseball boy gets killed. His screams are so horrifying. Honestly love this movie so much
Fun fact: The figurine on Abra’s nightstand is the character Emerald from the internet show RWBY. She has the ability to make people see things and read their thoughts. Abra’s actress is apparently a fan of the show. Just thought it was interesting.
I was thrown back when I saw the Emerald statue in the theatre, but then I remembered her powers and thought it was a nice nod that few would get. Although it doesn’t let her read thoughts. It just messes with their minds and can make them see/experience things that aren’t actually there.
This book helped to save my life. I was falling into alcoholism for about a decade and I needed help. I read the book about a year before I got sober, and all the references to Dan getting help put a seed in my mind. I read it again a year after getting sober and it made all the difference. I know that Steve (Stephen King) also has been sober for years, but the powerful tale of Dan's recovery and overcoming the traumas of his childhood (which, just like in real life are often psychic as well as physical and often manifest as substance abuse) is one of those things I'll never forget. I now read both books (The Shining is also about how Jack gets worse and worse, a common problem with alcoholics who don't or can't get help) each year. Honestly, I liked the movie but I felt that it skipped over some of the best parts of the books. Still, it was, well..... killer. Thanks for this awesome Kill Count. it's nice when you find others who admire good filmmaking, and this was it.

That kid getting tortured is the best actor I've seen in my life. And it's a fricking child. That child acts better than most adult actors, and most ADULT actors are *really good* This brings his performance to a whole new level.

This movie was so boring though, I nearly fell asleep watching it. Is there something I missed? Or was it just a poorly made movie. Nothing can beat the Shining, but I'm glad that this movie did poorly.

It was a tough job for sure. I think the movie would have been better off ignoring the Kubrick film and simply following the novels but that was never a possibility for Warner Bros probably. Oh well it’s still really good
Jacob’s character (baseball kid) getting killed is probably the most a scene has ever affected me. Even watching it on the kill count makes me physically sick to my stomach.
The amount of respect I have for the filmmakers finding actors who looked similar to the cast of the OG Shining instead of creating uncanny CGI homunculi of them is immeasurable.
I actually got teary eyed watching this the first time during the baseball boy scene. Not even because I was sad but because it was soo intense and scary. (Jacob Tremblay is probably my favorite kid actor. I hope he never stops doing movies so I can watch him grow and probably win a bunch of Oscars.) I honestly don’t think a movie is ever made me react in that way which is why this is probably my favorite horror movie ever. It also amazes me how Flanagan was able to merge the two versions of The Shining movie/book and Doctor Sleep book. Like James said “a modern masterpiece”. I’m so happy to have been around for this movie.

Yeah... the books are still way better. In the Shining their was so much untapped potential which should’ve been explored, rather then creating characters and events which didn’t even happen. However, the Doctor Sleep movie did in a sense salvage what the Shining ruined. Don’t get me wrong I still love both movies - but compared to the source material they fall short in several areas.
Honestly was utterly petrified at the scene with Bradley Taylor that I walked out of the cinema and I’m not ashamed to admit I started crying my girlfriend was next to me looking completely catatonic from it. It honestly seemed so real. Later when it came out I honestly felt like I was having a heart attack seeing it on the shelf in the store

Great Video! *Doctor Sleep is one of the most visually stunning movies I have ever seen, that scene where rose is floating through space is surreal, beautiful, and perfect*
Fun Fact: There is a real life cat that predicts when people are gonna die, His name is Oscar the Cat and he lives in the Steere Nursing Home in Providence, Rhode Island. He basically does the same thing the cat in this movie does
i'm willing to bet that azrael the cat(whose name is a reference to an angel of death, i believe) is meant to be a reference to oscar. as for how oscar does it, i think the jury's out. some think he's drawn to heating pads used on dying patients to warm them up while others think he's picking up on the odor or some kind of chemical dying people put out

He's fantastic. Has anyone seen 'Room'? Not the one with Tommy Wiseau. But the one starring Brie Larson. The movie practically revolves around his character. Pretty impressive for some 8 yr old kid.
"This world is a dream of a dream to me now" Really opens up alot of questions of the afterlife in that universe and feeds just enough to where you can form your own interpretation of it.. But enough to where you can get a sense for the complex scale of the afterlife in this universe.. Its really cool not gonna lie

Mike Flanagan is honestly my favorite horror director/writer rn. Everything hes done has given me the full spectrum of emotions. And don't get me started on his attention to detail and ability to build tension

Easily one of the most satisfying villain deaths in my opinion.
I also loved the risk that came along with it and the fact that Danny doesnt just get away scott free from it by running away while they're distracted. Like, he knew what would happen if he released his ghosts and that's what happened.
It was really a satisfying villain death, I like that they included most of the ghosts from the movie even though in the book there is only two.
And to top it off she died in a similar painful way she killed the baseball kid, true karma.

I am honestly surprised Danny Lloyd made an appearance at all, though I am glad he did. He was my biology professor in college in my first trimester and he made it very clear that you were to never mention The Shining in his room or you would be kicked out for the entire trimester. He was a really cool dude that was pretty laid back, but he never wanted to talk about his time in the The Shining. Good on him for making the cameo and I hope he had a good time doing it!

You know, seeing adults being killed in movies is so common, but seeing a child dying, who's parents are most likely going to never recover from that and say its their fault forever, is very sad, and just makes people want to crank the guts out of the people who did this with a meat ginder. Having a child walk home alone in a remote area in this day and age is just asking for trouble. I was a bit pissed at his parents that they didn’t arrange a ride with one of his teammates or something.
The baseball boy scene is gut-wrenching. I've never watched the entire movie. I didn't know about the baby. I'm glad you didn't linger on it too long.

It was good, but I much like the book version of the ending better, minus the fact that it didn't happen at the Overlook Hotel. Or at the very least, the fact that Jack Torrance helps his son in the fight. I'd have liked that in the film.
Imagine being professional actors who spend their whole lives practicing their craft and then getting SHOOK by the scene you're filming. If that doesn't tell you how good Mike is at his job then I don't know what will. Props to the kid too for his work. I felt soooooooooo bad for him during that scene.

Kyliegh Curran played Abra AND Danny and managed to make it work, and Jacob Tremblay was an absolute trooper being able to scream and cry that convincingly.
Couldn’t finish the film the first time because of his scene, it was too depressing and almost realistic in a way.
I shed a tear for future Oscar winner Jacob Tremblay when he died in this kill count. I saw this movie in theaters and I've watched both the theatrical and director's cut of the film on Blu-Ray. Jacob is just that brilliant an actor. Massive props to Mike Flanagan and Rose Ferguson as well.

The actors being worried and shaken up by the kid makes me think of the scene where Pennywise's Actor (Bill Skarsgård) was scaring a kid and kept asking if they were okay afterwards. A few of the actors (I wanna say Fin Wolfhard) talked about it in an interview. Just reminds me how amazing these actors are as people, and how great they are as Actors, acting ruthless when it's not their true nature.

I love how Rose's arrogance is shown glaringly throughout. From her not wanting anyone more powerful than her, to almost each line. Once her flock is killed, she can easily survive for many more years off the leftover shine, but her arrogance/weakness ultimately ends up being her downfall as she continues to chase after such a stronger opponent.

Danny's death scene made immediately burst into tears the second his mom's ghost came on screen. It's that feeling of "why the hecc am I crying, this isn't that sad." But it is. The only thing they could've done better is also include jack torrance, since he wasn't bad if a person, just overridden by the hotel and his past.
in the book jack helps defeat rose at the campground and does just that
I was tearing up as well! It’s a beautiful moment where Danny gets to say goodbye to his mom in a way they both deserve.
It’s especially nice because Danny was just seeing evil entities so it’s nice he also got someone special to him.
This scene resonates because. Like King said, “there is no true horror with out also having hope.”
I don't know if Jack being there would have worked, Danny already made peace with him through the drink scene, letting him move on (Or at least, that's how I interpret it)

The movies had Jack Torrence be more of a prick to his family compared to the novels. Sadly, we followed that logic. BUT, we could say that Jack himself has long since passed, all that’s left of him is his face for the hotel to use (as he’s exclusively referred to as Lloyd in the subtitles, by himself, and by the hotel as an extension)
I took my kids to the Shining hotel in Colorado and I like to think it shaped their love of horror films to this day.

That scene alone is one of the reasons I've hesitated buying the film. The movie is fantastic, but having a son myself, it was easily the most uncomfortable thing I've seen in a long, long time. Despite how well it was acted, I'm not sure I could sit through it again.

That scene where Jacob Tremblay’s character gets killed is maybe the most uncomfortable I have ever been in a movie theater. Gotta give the kid some major acting credit though. It feels very real.
It legitimately made me tear up, it’s horrifying. Fantastic acting though
I remember reading a piece talking about Jacob Trembley’s work on this movie and how he put his all into it and then when the scene was over, popped up and walked over to craft services while all the adults were wracked with trauma. So if you watch this and feel bad, just remember that he had a fun time and second after they finished, he was eating a cookie or something.

Came here to watch the kill count and to at least know what was going on. Went to see Doctor Sleep and it was one of my favorite movies in a long time.

Doctor Sleep was like their acknowledgement to Stephen King for 'messing up' his work in the first place because King did not like what Kubrick did to his book at all which is why they killed off Danny the way Jack should have died in the first film and its the whole thing, not just a fiery explosion but corpse possession too
There sure is a lot more character deaths in the film than the book
Abra's RWBY-inspired mind trap goes further than just her Emerald wig, since additional set dressing includes props and wall decorations that are the colours red, white, black and yellow, the base palette and namesakes for the four lead characters of that show.
That attention to detail must've been really exciting for Abra's actor, too.

It's easy to force yourself to scream in horror films
But it's even harder to force yourself to cry
Idk if it makes it any easier for anyone else, but if I wanna fake cry to screw with my friends/family, the easiest and most convincing way for me to do it is to try and "open" my nostrils, and focus more on snot, spit, and just gross sobbing crying lol
It looks way more pathetic(and would ruin most movies lol), but it's funny as hell and seems to be the best way to irritated my eye-ducts without actually touching them with my hands.
@@mutt9779 damn I just consciously irritate my eyes (without you touching my face) and I start to cry, initially I had to think of bad memories and sad moments, but using that would be better if you want to full on cry and yell, which isn’t that good. So I just irritate my eyes to cry instead, and I force snot to come out ( I practiced it for months to do it), change my voice to sound exactly how I do when I cry and stutter to get the perfect crying.

I’d like to think at the ending scene where Dan dies in the blazing fire is so symbolic to how his father died in the icy snow, Dan had did what his father couldn’t, so he ends up being satisfied and is doing more than fine in the afterlife knowing he did better in life now and he successfully helped a special someone in his life out and how to be stronger from the past experiences he’s learned and to teach that someone how to avoid the evil that haunts them, and forever putting an end to the nightmares permanently. The fire ultimately representing the warmness, sweetness and satisfaction of his final moments and he even goes out in a blaze of glory compared to the fading icy cold fate of the movie’s predecessor’s antagonist.

What really gets me is how Stephen King clearly loves this movie too. I think it must be an amazing feeling to see someone else understand your own art so well, and to do it such justice.
I have really wanted Kings reaction to Midnight Mass. It was so obviously an homage, but phenomenal in its own right.

That's exactly what blew me away about the film. It managed to bridge the gap between King's novels and the Kubrick film in a way that felt organic to the story. It's a fantastic film, Mike Flanigan knocked it out of the park!
I’m not even done reading The Shining, and I can already understand why the movie version of Jack would upset King. Any nuance is obliterated in favor of just making him angry and creepy from the start in Kubrick’s film.

Stephen King might not be sure about what the shining is but its not like it detracts from the whole fantasy of his books.

The scene of the lady and her baby is so unnerving and horrifying. Like… Danny was probably sleeping next to a dead woman and then her baby ends up starving to death. That scene always makes me extremely sad, especially when she said that they (as in police or neighbors) hadn’t found them yet. Also the scene where the little baseball boy gets killed. His screams are so horrifying. Honestly love this movie so much

I was thrown back when I saw the Emerald statue in the theatre, but then I remembered her powers and thought it was a nice nod that few would get.
Although it doesn’t let her read thoughts. It just messes with their minds and can make them see/experience things that aren’t actually there.

This book helped to save my life. I was falling into alcoholism for about a decade and I needed help. I read the book about a year before I got sober, and all the references to Dan getting help put a seed in my mind. I read it again a year after getting sober and it made all the difference. I know that Steve (Stephen King) also has been sober for years, but the powerful tale of Dan's recovery and overcoming the traumas of his childhood (which, just like in real life are often psychic as well as physical and often manifest as substance abuse) is one of those things I'll never forget. I now read both books (The Shining is also about how Jack gets worse and worse, a common problem with alcoholics who don't or can't get help) each year. Honestly, I liked the movie but I felt that it skipped over some of the best parts of the books. Still, it was, well..... killer.
Thanks for this awesome Kill Count. it's nice when you find others who admire good filmmaking, and this was it.

That kid getting tortured is the best actor I've seen in my life. And it's a fricking child. That child acts better than most adult actors, and most ADULT actors are *really good*

This movie was so boring though, I nearly fell asleep watching it. Is there something I missed? Or was it just a poorly made movie. Nothing can beat the Shining, but I'm glad that this movie did poorly.

I absolutely loved how Flanagan was able to combine elements from Kubrick’s Shining, both novels, and made this movie completely his own. He’s my favorite director for a reason (((:
It was a tough job for sure. I think the movie would have been better off ignoring the Kubrick film and simply following the novels but that was never a possibility for Warner Bros probably. Oh well it’s still really good

Jacob’s character (baseball kid) getting killed is probably the most a scene has ever affected me. Even watching it on the kill count makes me physically sick to my stomach.
This one felt a lot more "documentary-y" then other kill counts, I love it

The amount of respect I have for the filmmakers finding actors who looked similar to the cast of the OG Shining instead of creating uncanny CGI homunculi of them is immeasurable.
I actually got teary eyed watching this the first time during the baseball boy scene.
Not even because I was sad but because it was soo intense and scary. (Jacob Tremblay is probably my favorite kid actor. I hope he never stops doing movies so I can watch him grow and probably win a bunch of Oscars.)
I honestly don’t think a movie is ever made me react in that way which is why this is probably my favorite horror movie ever. It also amazes me how Flanagan was able to merge the two versions of The Shining movie/book and Doctor Sleep book. Like James said “a modern masterpiece”. I’m so happy to have been around for this movie.
Same! I'm glad i could see it in the movie theater even though nobody else wanted to watch it with me. This is one of the movies that will be marked into me forever.
Yeah... the books are still way better. In the Shining their was so much untapped potential which should’ve been explored, rather then creating characters and events which didn’t even happen. However, the Doctor Sleep movie did in a sense salvage what the Shining ruined. Don’t get me wrong I still love both movies - but compared to the source material they fall short in several areas.
Honestly was utterly petrified at the scene with Bradley Taylor that I walked out of the cinema and I’m not ashamed to admit I started crying my girlfriend was next to me looking completely catatonic from it. It honestly seemed so real. Later when it came out I honestly felt like I was having a heart attack seeing it on the shelf in the store

Great Video! *Doctor Sleep is one of the most visually stunning movies I have ever seen, that scene where rose is floating through space is surreal, beautiful, and perfect*
Fun Fact: There is a real life cat that predicts when people are gonna die, His name is Oscar the Cat and he lives in the Steere Nursing Home in Providence, Rhode Island. He basically does the same thing the cat in this movie does
i'm willing to bet that azrael the cat(whose name is a reference to an angel of death, i believe) is meant to be a reference to oscar. as for how oscar does it, i think the jury's out. some think he's drawn to heating pads used on dying patients to warm them up while others think he's picking up on the odor or some kind of chemical dying people put out

Really opens up alot of questions of the afterlife in that universe and feeds just enough to where you can form your own interpretation of it.. But enough to where you can get a sense for the complex scale of the afterlife in this universe.. Its really cool not gonna lie

Mike Flanagan is honestly my favorite horror director/writer rn. Everything hes done has given me the full spectrum of emotions. And don't get me started on his attention to detail and ability to build tension
