One of the best bike instruction videos I've ever seen! Great camera angles, great instructions (not to brief, not to long), but most importantly: not only showing HOW to do it but also explaining WHY it needs to be done. Thanks!

I had a creaking noise on my bike too, but after taking apart the bottom bracket, replacing the bearings, greasing it all up nicely and putting it back together, I realized that the creaking noise wasn't coming from the bottom bracket at all. It was actually coming from the frame shock absorber whose screws and nuts were all rusty and dry and after cleaning those and the plastic washers on the inside, the creaking noise was gone.
Also, thanks to the uploader, very helpful video. 5/5

I just wanted you to know that your video just saved me ALOT of time and money because I was so frustrated with my bottom bracket probs. This video fixed everything (noises, friction, etc.) and to think it was all caused by the locking ring not being tight enough. Furthermore, this video and this one alone provided CLEAR, FOCUSED CLOSE UPS. And even further instruction if your bike varied a bit. PERFECT INSTRUCTION VIDEO.

Shift your front derailleur into the smallest chain-ring position, and using your fingers, lift the chain off of the chain ring, and place it on the frame where the bottom bracket is. With the chain separated from the cogs, you should be able to get an idea of how smoothly the bearings in your bottom bracket are rolling. If it doesn't turn freely, you should service your bottom bracket. Something else to check if you are hearing a creaking noises, is your saddle. Saddles can creak too!

I spent 7 hours yesterday doing all the bearings on my MTB.
My advice - fuck the cleaning and re-greasing, get new bearings from the start. Pair for the BB, and a pair each for the wheels.
I sorted my front wheel right out, but the back wheel sounds even worse now after I cleaned and de-greased.....same for the bottom bracket!
So, a lot of time wasted trying to do it without buying bearings. Getting some today :)
I got a crank puller for under 15 quid in my local bike shop..highly advisable.

For cleaning, I just rub with a dry rag. If there are a few stubborn spots, just drip some oil (or chain lube) on them and continue to rub.
In terms of grease, at home I use White Lithium Grease. In this video I'm using the stuff they have at the shop. It really doesn't matter which type you use as long as you aren't mixing two different types of grease together (which you won't be doing if you wipe everything clean before adding the new grease).

This is an excellent video with great instructions and just the right level of detail. My comment is not an advertisement for Park Tools -- but rather than try an international tool source -- which we have all had limited success with - I'll just say that the Park Tool HCW-5, and HCW-11, and CCP-22 are the exact tools needed to do this job well. They aren't cheap, so look around for various sources for them, either new or used.

This video was filmed in a bike shop where I used to volunteer, but I have the tools to do this task at home too. Mountain Equipment Co-op has a fairly good selection of tools, which you can buy at their store, or order from their catalog. Also, I would recommend checking at your local bike shop. If they don't carry what you need on their shelf, they usually have a big catalog full of every bike tool or part you could ever imagine and they can order them for you. I hope this advice helps!
