Great video showing a few of the different lake on the South Island! One thing to note is that lizard lake has a bait ban,( single barbless hook, trout daily quota 2 restriction.) I'm under 16 myself and find mayo lake a more enjoyable way of going to the grocery store in the spring and fall.
Hey Malcolm, thanks for pointing that out! So tha's definitely a mistake on my part for sure and congratulations for being the first person in who knows how long (ten years+?) pointing out a mistake I've made in regulations. There is bit of an oversight here. The reason bait ban was introduced for Lizard Lake is that the biologist was attempting to create a trophy lake fishery several years ago. The lake was fertilized, but in the end it didn't work. That bait ban was in fact supposed to be removed once the project was done, but somehow it got missed. All of us (myself, those responsible for the stockings, etc) didn't realize it was not removed when we planned out this video to introduce the new floating dock to the public. Anyway, when the new licence year rolls around on April 1st 2023, it will be removed.
I just moved to Lake Cowichan and im just starting to get into fishing/fly fishing fishing the cowichan river and lake and it was nice to find out where some more local fishing spots are. Great video keep up the good work!👍
You should! We don't have many age restriction lakes actually, I can only think of a couple in each region. They're great to have for kids and also elderlies who may have mobility issues.
This was not only informative but very welcoming. Though I may never see such beautiful places to fish, Im a very versatile fisherman and love my steel head fishing. Great Video champ.
@@FishingwithRod I grew up in cobble hill about 5 minutes from Dougans lake, it’s pronounced Dew-gans lake. Fished the whole Shawnigan lake system as a young teenager
Thanks for the correction of pronounciation! 😅 The only thing I didn't really like about Dougan was the noise from the highway beside it, other than that I thought it was a good sized lake with lots of nice shore structures for fishing.
You disturbed that heron, Rod! 😆 I've never seen that before either - a heron trying to steal a fish. It must be conditioned to stay close to people fishing. Great blue herons have the sharpest beak of all birds. They are sticky sharp like a fish hook, and razor sharp a little way down the sides.
Nice video Rod! You should do a remake fly fishing. I find easier to entice FV Stocked trout using small attractor flies vs spoons. For some reason spoons work initially then stop working all of a sudden, while flies work for longer, at least for me!
For most lakes on the more southern part of the island I’ve found the most efficient way of catching rainbows is a bottom rig with some floating power bait
hi rod watch a lot of your videos just wondering if you could make one fishing the hope slough. super fun and a nice challenge most of my luck has been at minter garden bridge. : )
Great video Rod really ejoyed it. We are coming to B C on the 10th of October fishing the Harrison for Chum and Sturgeon could you please advise what 8 day licences We would need. Thanks.
Thanks. You’d need an 8 day non-resident freshwater fishing licence, and the salmon conservation surcharge (if you intend to keep some for eating). www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/sports-culture/recreation/fishing-hunting/fishing/recreational-freshwater-fishing-licence
I've seen a video (still somewhere on UA-cam I'm sure) of an eagle diving straight down to grab a fish on someone's line really close to the floating dock at Como lol.
Two years ago I was fishing with my daughter at Browning lake, a heron stood about 5 feet away from my daughter trying to steal the fish she was about to land. For some reason, the heron was using one of its feet to kick the fish instead of using its beak, the fish were kicked off and swam away...
Hey rod wanna come up to Campbell river since your on the island😅 it’s the salmon fishing capital of the world , right now it’s a mix of all the species
lol this was filmed back in May, but I am gonna be on the island pretty soon. I'm not heading up toward Campbell River this time though unfortunately. Hard to fit everything in when the island has so many options! 😄
Speaking truthfully this past Spring trout fishing in the Kamloops area was the worst weather-wise than I can remember in the last 10 years and not nearly so productive as other years. Seemed like the Chironomid bite was screwed up as well? Not much better up HWY 24.
I had the opposite experience this spring actually. Yeah the start of the season was a little crazy. I had snow at Tunkwa, hurricane at Lundbom, but once those settled down I had a couple of weeks of good weather and pretty consistent fishing between Merritt and Kamloops. I'm actually posting an episode from that trip in about a week from now.
Rod, as strange as this may sound, I am also the type of person whom enjoy more all of the activities that fishing requires (the prep for fishing, its social aspect, its environment etc) including the fishing itself. Catching fish is always nice and enjoyable but not caching any fish is part of fishing and when it happens it is OK.

It still says bait ban tho.. 🤔
@@FishingwithRod Well that's all irrelevant because the regs still state bait ban. Also it's the new fishing season and it still states bait ban.
@@devonjones I know. We're working on it. It should have changed on April 1st.
Rainy spring days on small lakes are always some of the most peaceful times I get outdoors. Great Video Rod
Definitely! Thanks for watching!
I love to fish in cloudy or rainy days. All the best.
Thanks!
Dougans is tricky, fished there a long time! Best rainbow I've seen out of a lake!

lake with age restriction = genius! Your lakes up north are so picturesque and beautiful! gotta venture there one day.
You should! We don't have many age restriction lakes actually, I can only think of a couple in each region. They're great to have for kids and also elderlies who may have mobility issues.
Pretty looking lakes mate and that goes for the trout too. Nice video 👍🏼

This makes me excited for fall trout fishing…just hope it doesn’t rain as much 😮 ☔️ 🎣
Great Vid Rod ! Fished many of those lakes when I lived on the island and there are tons more great fishery on the island . Thanks for sharing Rod 🙂
Thanks Ernie!

What is your set-up for bait fishing, how much weight etc?
I actually have a whole video tutorial showing all of my bait setups for trout. 😄 ua-cam.com/video/-W_6AXSJk4c/v-deo.html
You just have to get Nina to sing fishing songs along with the guitar playing. Everyone wants this!
Haha!

I probably won't simply because it is a pretty sensitive small system. :) It does offer some pretty good fishing at times for sure.

Goodmorning Rod :)

Ah the truck rod slide, classic
Lots of little lakes off the logging roads out of Parksville. The rougher the road in the better result on the island.
Definitely!
Caught some nice ones at fuller.......1-2lbs......
Hi. We are 5 people from Denmark, coming to Vedder from 12. oct. - 22. oct. It could be nice to meet you and your wife.
Jan
Hej Jan, that's exciting! We most likely will be popping down to the river a few times during your visit so we'll see you out there.
Nice video. 👍
Thanks 👍
I’ve found will fuller you need a boat if you wanna catch lots of fish but have caught bass from shore in the wooded area
It's worth trying again I think! 😄
Como lake the heron will try to steal your fish lol, talked to a few older guys that fish there and apprently its more common than one would think!

Yep!
Sometimes floats won’t work , on these lakes power bait on the bottom can be very good

If you see too many fishing the river that you have posted many fishing videos, maybe you are the problem?
Does it seem like I think there are too many people fishing?
