The way I see it, Guys like this are in a sense, practical historians. That is to say, they're documenting and preserving history by the act of recreating it.
I agree, they're even better for history by re-creating it as they learn how the real things really worked. Best of all, they do so without destroying original rare items!
I hadn't considered that and it's a good point. Having high quality duplicates that people can handle and examine is a great way to protect the original.
Totally behind this, Adam should pick up all his years of (drooling) expertise in suit making and get together with a group of talented people like Ryan and make a state of the art space suit ensemble. The whole nine yards, inner, outer, shells, the supporting machines. Would be nice.
I was thinking more like making it as a prop that would be cool but easy to make and open source all the patterns so that indie filmmakers could have that as a resource.
I think it is SO AMAZING that a production humbled themselves and reached out to a maker, realizing his UNBELIEVABLE knowledge, craft and expertise. Simply beautiful! Thank you for your passion. And thank you Adam for sharing this. Truly amazing and absolutely beautiful!
It's awesome that his motivation for making an exception and doing props for First Man was not that it might inspire other productions to his work but that it might inspire kids to feel what he did when he looked at those a kid. Feels good
As Adam suggested, always write down the things that you learn. Not only one day you'll quickly need a piece of information that you found buried in some archive or 2h long video, but one day it will be helpful for the next generations to find books or just doc files filled with informations, tips, tricks and so on. I tend to always to so and I find it EXTREMELY useful. And I mean it!
Even better if it's digital. Save it somewhere in the cloud where you can not only search it, but you also get to rest easy knowing that it isn't lost if you're robbed or if your house burns down. Text alone doesn't take up a lot of space, so even simple solutions like Google Drive are pretty good.
I am SO happy Ryan got to work on this and his skill REALLY shows in those closeups of his work. In the day and ago of "Good enough, we'll CGI the rest in post." It's nice to see a production reach out to a true craftsman like Ryan Nagata not just for his scholarly knowledge of the subject matter, but for entire pieces and costumes. You've come a long way from just making cool replicas for enthusiasts, collectors, and museums, Ryan. I hope he really does start writing this stuff down & the processes involved, for anyone following in his footsteps and the rest of us artsy types that just need that proper touch of real to refer in our sci-fi works.
Stayed for the First Man credits, looked for Ryan N.'s name in the credits and did not see it. Did I overlook it? Seems like he did enough work to be credited, unless I really misunderstand the way credits work.
Love this video! Loved the movie! Neil was born in Wapakoneta Ohio where I’m from. I love anything about Armstrong. He used to watch football with my grandfather as they lived across the street and my grandparents had one of the first TVs on the street. Thank you Adam!
I would purchase and probably obsessively read a book by Ryan about minute and nearly forgotten space suit engineering and facts. I could spend hours just reading tiny details and facts about the evolution of the suits and the reason why. I think it would be cool to preserve that information so we never lose it.
I bet Ryan got payed very well for the knowledge and skill he has, good on him! It always pays off to work your ass off and geek out hard on something, make yourself an expert in whatever you like and someone will value that. Also that wooden chest behind them that everything is placed on is beautiful, I would like to know a bit more about it.
I loved First man and the props. Noticed the knobs and switches in the capsules were weathered, like you might see them now in the museum. Some of the knobs were even grimey. Question: wouldn’t the knobs THEN have been clean, especially in the 11 capsule at launch?
Yes! I thought they got everything spot on apart from that. Everyone in clean suits during manufacturer. ..they would tumble the LM to shake out the smallest debris before final assembly. ..then you see all the dials in the command capsule all soiled and messed up( Ok on the return journey things could be more worn but not on the pad). I know the were just trying to show the "rivets and all" 60's era tech....but it was a glaring clunky moment for me in the film. Everything else was incredible!
Good point on writing stuff down. The people who made the stuff made it to work and might not recall the details now. Same for the people who wore them. Just like a war vet won't recall the number of rivets on their pistol belt but the collectors will, guy like Ryan and Adam are the ones who'll know this info when all is said and done.
Fun video Adam . After being in my field of work I relate to you guys about knowledge being lost . Sheet metal layout being lost to plasma cutting tables and the computer For one . Digital p/t gauges where you don’t even have to know how the number is derived . No manual calculations .
For a Halloween space suit for my nephew I mad the Apollo gloves by painting a work glove, gluing on el-cheapo white beta cloth and clipping the finger tips off of latex gloves and gluing them on.
For quite a long time, Adam was a Seamaster guy, and I've only noticed the Speedy in videos for a month or two. I never could square his love of the space suits with the Seamaster, though I believe he said once that the Seamaster was a gift from his wife. If he's like most of us watch nerds, he makes concious choices daily about which watch to wear and why. I purchased a replica Apollo hook and loop band for for mine, both a short version and a long version. The maker was based out of the UK. The maker did use vintage correct materials and typefaces for the labels. The measurements and construction of the strap were detailed in a NASA document that was used for reference. If you've read this far, you probably already knew most of this, and you're probably a Speedmaster dork like me. So hello, fellow Speedy fans!
@@farmerdave33 thats awesome, I absolutely love speedmasters as well, the seamaster was indeed a gift from his wife when mythbuster first became famous
Kizzi Flightgear for anyone that read @farmerdave33 's comment. The Apollo straps are basically exactly what the astronauts wore. They're AWESOME! Edit: I'd also like to add that you have to be on your best game checking Kizzi's website if you want one of his straps. They sell out VERY fast so check every day, he posts updates.
It got me wondering too. I recognize it from a UA-cam channel called Xiaomify, he uses almost the same logo. Nevertheless, it's a coincidence I reckon.
I was talking to the man at Orbital Effects and he said that the LM interior that he rented to them came back pretty much, well... altered... in that they added details and removed details of the interior... All this whilst I was standing in the actual article... (I was showing him my Edu*Craft Diversions DSKY replicas) So, as we'd seen in the release film, they really "comic-booked" out a lot of the ancillary aspects... which was a major viewing disappointment... er... for me. You know... the lunar landscape during the landing... which was... hmmm.. laughable... and the overall added grittiness of spacecraft interiors... Hmph...! OH WELL... Hollywood..! Sheesh. 😴 Thanks! Love it!
The way I see it, Guys like this are in a sense, practical historians.
That is to say, they're documenting and preserving history by the act of recreating it.
like a method actor for history
It is taking a passion to the stars and beyond for sure 👍 your words are spot on
I agree, they're even better for history by re-creating it as they learn how the real things really worked. Best of all, they do so without destroying original rare items!
You're absolutely right about the passion, it's a potent ingredient, such a positive thing.
I hadn't considered that and it's a good point. Having high quality duplicates that people can handle and examine is a great way to protect the original.
I think Adam was a space suit in a former life
Underrated comment
5 years later seeing this comment and it's still funny.
I would absolutely love to buy a book about everything that Ryan Nagata knows about spacesuits and NASA missions, gladly!!
I'd like to see Adam and Ryan work together to create an original spacesuit design.
Totally behind this, Adam should pick up all his years of (drooling) expertise in suit making and get together with a group of talented people like Ryan and make a state of the art space suit ensemble. The whole nine yards, inner, outer, shells, the supporting machines. Would be nice.

This is a real treat. And just shows with hardwork, persistance and love of something, you can just do exactly what you dream of.
These videos are my favorites! I love when you and Ryan geek over spacesuits
Likewise. I know I can be super nerdy about stuff, and it's sooo nice to see someone else be the same way about something they're passionate about :).

This guy needs to write a book with all of that info from his brain in it.
FOR REAL!!
That, and also because he speaks so quietly
Adam isn't the only savage in this video. Ryan killed it. Can't wait to see his work on screen.
I just sit watching these videos with a big grin on my face! Nothing better than a good old geek out..
Just came back and watched this episode. How incredibly amazing.
I sew. But holy crap...I wouldn't know where to begin. What passion!
It's amazing how many accurate information you get from makers, who do research before building the props.

Ryan should make a book of all his knowledge and replicas! I would definitely buy that!
Always a pleasure to see Ryan's work, I loved how the film looked and felt.
It's a bit like experimental archeology, understanding by making. Excellent work!
I'm glad someone of such knowledge and talent got to work on such a big project.
Excellent. I really appreciate the level of craftsmanship shown. Thank you.

Excellent video Ryan and Adam a great duo.Bill
Totally fascinating.I'll be paying more attention to the suits when I see the movie now.
im so happy for Ryan. that's awesome
Fascinating and brilliant, thanks for bringing us this Adam
This channel is a blessing
These videos are always the most interesting. Love it.
You two MUST design and build your own Astronaut suits!!! They would look amazing!
little humblebrag from Adam. 'from the time i flew in a U2' :)
Brady Haran approves of this use of "humblebrag"
Ryan Nagata is an artist :) I can relate in the detail department. He does indeed need to write a book before all this information is lost.
building spacesuits for production and beeing able to put easter eggs in- dreamjob :>
Two fantastic talents!
just saw it last night , it was amazing
This was really fun to watch!
Great show guys. Thank you.
Funny how when Adam asks a question it includes 80% of the answer 😂
I’ve actually just been researching a Gemini suit for an animation project. I think they’re my new favourite.
Good point on writing stuff down. The people who made the stuff made it to work and might not recall the details now. Same for the people who wore them. Wow, this guy really knows his stuff. I'm impressed.
I wish I was as passionate about anything as these two are about space suites.
I never thought i would geek-out over a pair of gloves

Very Very COOL GUYS !
Love how adam is wearing an Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch
I believe that's his daily driver...he's always wearing it on camera.
@@falconuruguay4588 yeah true, still love the watch though

Waow.. Great respect from Denmark!
Wow that was great!
What a humble guy.
i wonder what the rough cost would be to make a replica from scratch or even to design one?
You little tease youuuu! That ending was unnecessarily teasing. :P
This is too underrated
How much is a suit like this from ryan?
amazing, need to see the movie :)
Great video!
Man, I wish the moment Joe Engle went over the suit for the first time was filmed! It would be neat to watch him gush haha
Have to love that Ryan appreciated meeting Joe Engle over Ryan Gosling! Full on geeks for the win!!
Shoutout to the intern in the Gemini suit!
where can I buy one?
Out Standing!!
Are you going to do the space suits on the movie prospect?
Adam, how is the "The Martian" space suit coming alone ? i know it going to be awesome..
Hey adam sana makagawa ka ng space suit gun props the movie critters
RYAN IS SO DAMN COOL.
He needs a UA-cam channel or something. And he needs to write a book. And Adam needs to push him to write that book
The Playtex 18-Hour Spacesuit.
Definitely not a coincidence that Adam is wearing his Speedmaster Pro in this video.
Making all that in a month and a half is amazing
I love the new haircut, Adam
Off-topic question: what is the story behind Adam's t-shirt? I like it.
It got me wondering too. I recognize it from a UA-cam channel called Xiaomify, he uses almost the same logo. Nevertheless, it's a coincidence I reckon.
So, did you buy that suit ? looks amazing btw
pretty cold over there... :)
Adam wearing the Speedmaster 👍
Where can I buy a decent replica of the Apollo EVA suit, in my size?
I'm rich and can probably afford it.
I loved the movie
como es que sigues vivo
Nice
Is adam wearing a PAX shirt?

The hardware on the X-15 suit looks like titanium, I wonder how Ryan got it so spot on.
20:27 PLEASE WRITE EVERYTHING YOU KNOW DOWN
Omg..why don't you and and the suit just get a room together already😍
Please do SpaceX spacesuit. Pretty plz.
Nice.
little does he know that the belt buckle he found was featured in a dramatic scene.
Wow
Man maybe we know a lot of Adam, but Jamie?. Any one know about?. ty
Still running his shop, M5. Other than that, not really sure. A minute on Google and I'm sure I could know though.
Ryan needs to make a book about all he knows
Ryan.. WRITE SOME BOOKS!!!
*Adam the best* 😍😎
Ryan should 100% write a book about all he knows about space suits.
Never clicked on something faster
You are definitely madmen in the best sense :D
It's crazy that they wanted to be so precise about the suits, but they left out something so significant as the planting of the U.S. flag...
I am sure Adam knows it, but Chromel-R is not a steel but a Chromium / Nickel alloy...
Are we not going to talk about the speedmaster?... When did Adam get a speedmaster?
