I love Adam's attention to detail. Hardly anyone who saw this in person would be able to go "hey that stitching isn't correct", but the need to be as accurate as possible is just awesome. This mentality is what makes me want to be a maker.
The "hieroglyphics" on the helmets made me think of trench art from WW1 and 2. Imagine that you are part of the Nostromo crew and a lot of your time is spent waiting for things to happen. How to kill time when you're sitting in the airlock and nothing to do - make your gear kinda unique.
Adam heres a TIP for you, I've noticed most of your suits that you wear, you usualy have a loud fan, use an computer fan that is ment for silence with a low dB also works from 12V :)
Don't get me wrong; cgi can be nice, but I still much prefer physical props like this that require some extreme ingenuity and creativity to actually construct and quickly for that matter. Props to Adam (pun intended).
The only awkward part of having physical props is when they re-sample old prop based films for Blu-ray or HD and over sharpen the images. Being able to see the kit bashing glue and other unintended details can turn a film into something that looks like it was made by someone on UA-cam. Totally destroys the illusion when your brain switches from "OMG scary monster" to "that's just a man in a rubber suit, look you can see the wrinkles". Doc Brown's facial makeup in BTTF2 is a good example. He looks like a man wearing latex, rather than an older version of himself.
James Grimwood That's a good point, but if it's done right it looks so incredible. One example where the physical prop made a difference is in the 3rd matrix where the Nebakanezer smashes through the blast doors. In some cases the propmaster simply doesn't have the time, budget, or tools to make everything perfect, but I think that if enough care is used when making these works of art that the look surpasses CGI.
Dan O'Bannon was to be the VFX supervisor on Dune not the writer. He wrote Alien after Dune was cancelled. The artists from the Dune art dept. ended up working on Alien due to either O'Bannon recommending them or because Ridley Scott liked the same artists.
If the image that springs in your mind when you hear "Alien" isn't Ripley in the Power Loader in the second film, it's probably Ripley in the all-white Spacesuit staring down the Alien at the end of the first.
I don't know if you all are familiar with the Half-Life series, but I think it would be awesome if ya'll could make a wearable HEV suit, complete with Gordon Freeman's crowbar!
Just watching Adam go Incognitus on the floor made me start to sweat! But in a podcast Adam did say that for optimal performance of the cooling suit it needs to be put in a freezer overnight. And if anyone knows minibars in hotels, no where near as cold as a freezer. So might have enquired about using the kitchen freezer of the hotel. Still super awesome. Though i was surprised that when he said "its my longest project" and he just said 10 years... Other than the ZF-1 from The 5th Elements. made in, 1997.
Too bad the lights and fan didn't work haha. But it seemed like the fog in the helmet helped to hide Adam's identity more than it supposedly would have. Awesome costume and piece of movie history!
A space suit from Den's world a bit of Annunaki Egyptian stuff and Canuck hockey gloves. Total Heavy Metal mag flashbacks, first magazine Blade Runner got promo'd in saw after meeting Sir Run run..
refering to the bronze etched helmet and componenets, maybe they wanted to emulate a sort of mk 1 deep space suite sort of like maybe one of the first deep sea diving suits.
Great effort Adam, you created a perfect replica ! I have to say that it is one of the least convincing design of spacesuits that I have seen though, it really does not hold up to close scrutiny as a practical suit for EVA in hostile environments, I think it is one of my least favourite aspects of the movie. I really loved everything else about it especially the Alien technology and design but I feel those suits were lacking in so many ways, it almost looks like an undersuit and the outer protective layer is missing.
The backpack with the fan shorted out due to problems with the lights and he did not have time or equipment to fix it in his hotel room. He found during preliminary testing that the coolant spray wasn't very effective in the way he planned to use it, so he went with a backup plan of using a different vest. They only had access to a fridge, not a freezer, so it wasn't as effective as hoped. He still managed to get the job done, although clearly wasn't very comfortable :p
I always wonder why they don't simply have big holes in the backs of the helmets for scenes shot from the front..yeah.. a second helmet. And that goes for 2001's suits. It's not in the 2001 archives how they were able to breathe in those things either.
Also at Comic-Con Savage wore a breastplate that said Dallas on the front, confuses me as there is a Kane plate shown once in this video. I wonder if he has 2 or 3 breastplates?
I particularly remember a gas of some sort (I assume it was the CO2 frome the astronauts breathing) coming from an exhaust orifice in back of the helments. Do you have any idea how they did that in the movie? Great video.
I LOVE how Norm doesn't interrupt EVERY 5 F*CKING SECONDS like Will does! (Does anybody else find themselves grinding their teeth when Will interviews Adam? It's like Adam has the most interesting story ever, and Will is TRYING to stop it with his BS.)
i was thinking, since the way you go incognito with the facehugger, and that is difficult to see with, i was thinking you could fix that by. doing essential what you did with the totoro suit
Hang on, maybe I'm misunderstanding them, but did they say Dune and Alien had the same writer? Frank Herbert wrote Dune, and I'm 100% certain he had nothing to do with Alien. Also, Dune was finished, it came out in 1984, albeit having passed hands a few times before it was completed under David Lynch.
Before Lynch got the job Alejardo Jodorowsy was going to make it, in the late 70's. His movies are crazy (El Topo, Holy Mountain, Santra Sangre) but his vision was way too large! A doco about it has been made www.imdb.com/title/tt1935156/?ref_=nm_knf_t4
Is movie prop information curation better now than it was back in those days? Or will people in 20 years time be struggling to get info about movies made now the same way Adam and co are?
zainethedemonking Not only that. He went with another cooling vest and the one he used was supposed to be put in a freezer but they only had access to a fridge. So yeah. He was probably on the verge of heat exhaustion in that thing. :P
It's interesting, and a bit disappointing, that no effort(?) was made to duplicate the "exhaust gases" that shoot up out of the top of the suit helmets, as seen in the movie. (Probably CO2 gas?) To me, those "smokestacks" were, far and away, the most distinctive and iconic feature of the suits used in Alien. (The big headlight was probably second.)
That was one of the things that struck me about this build! Somewhere I have a copy of Heavy Metal magazine with some of the original Geiger artwork and storyboard. I saw Alien in the theatre at a midnight showing when it first came out and it really grabbed me by the boo-boo! Had to sit in the car a few minutes when I got home to work up the nerve to get out. Never happened with any other movie before or since...
If it's Kane's suit why was it labeled "Dallas," like it's his suit? And now it has the Savage name plate on it.. lol more appropriate but still not Kane?
+Jerry Brewer One, cost. Two, the suit's fan would have a whirring noise to it. Adam LOVES things making sense both in design and function. If it would make a noise in reality, his version will make a noise!
+Viking1310 but he said himself that the fans were not active during filming as they were way to noisy....and curious, what exactly were the fans for on a planet that required helmets and suits? of course I love Alien and everything about it.....but really, consider the planet's environment and the lack of support....yes I know it is just a moving picture, but if one is going to be called out for inaccuracies, consider the source.........
The fans were to blow air into the suits so the actors could breath. You could have them off during a take but after about 5 minutes they could pass out due to rebreathing CO2 without fresh air.
being me, and how I like building replicas I would of built in the cooling system into the suit and the microphone piece as well and have controls onto the suit, i like functioning replicas,
How would he walk if there was a face hugger obstructing his face and therefore view? He wouldn't be able to avoid things directly in front of him, but more detrimental, he would not be able to see the things on show.
It's a competition he does every year for fun. He dresses up and people try to figure out the clues he gives as to what costume he's wearing. He can't go more than an hour on the floor with some of his suits, he would pass out from heat exhaustion. He does, however, cover his identity in his "floor" suits as well. This year he had a Daft Punk helmet on.
mobspeak no dumdum, im saying that benjamin chong's comment wasnt wrong. and I had dinner with Adam last night and he said to tell you he has clearly stated in several videos and podcasts that he gets mobbed on the floor of comic con, and that he likes to look at stuff.
I love Adam's attention to detail. Hardly anyone who saw this in person would be able to go "hey that stitching isn't correct", but the need to be as accurate as possible is just awesome. This mentality is what makes me want to be a maker.
I still cant believe they made that movie in ‘79. I mean the CRT’s and medical props def give it away, but it’s such a good execution of that story.
The "hieroglyphics" on the helmets made me think of trench art from WW1 and 2. Imagine that you are part of the Nostromo crew and a lot of your time is spent waiting for things to happen. How to kill time when you're sitting in the airlock and nothing to do - make your gear kinda unique.
you can tell he love his stuff...you can see how excited he is explaining everything
I love these video's with Adam in his cave. Def need more of them. Or more of them sorted into the playlist ;). Keep' em coming.
Adam heres a TIP for you, I've noticed most of your suits that you wear, you usualy have a loud fan, use an computer fan that is ment for silence with a low dB also works from 12V :)
12:23 Adam totally left him hanging xDD
Such a dope last name...that on the back of a jersey or like on his space suit looks fucking badass...
SAVAGE

Oh cool! The cap worn inside the helmet is a WWII AN-H-15 cloth flight helmet. I thought something looked familiar.
I wish they would do more One Day Builds.
Dan O'Bannon was to be the VFX supervisor on Dune not the writer. He wrote Alien after Dune was cancelled. The artists from the Dune art dept. ended up working on Alien due to either O'Bannon recommending them or because Ridley Scott liked the same artists.
OMG, that is so unbelievably cool!
Who else is just watching this again after seeing the theatre costume he just got
If the image that springs in your mind when you hear "Alien" isn't Ripley in the Power Loader in the second film, it's probably Ripley in the all-white Spacesuit staring down the Alien at the end of the first.
And thats the reason why I want Adam to be my dad^^ Very nice work (as always)
This guy leads a charmed life.
I think the L.E.D for the helmet light was over the top. Americans!
0:03 he is allways laughing. I wish i had that kind of mood.
Adam, can you maybe do a round-up of all your space suits? A side by side comparison of different suits and their design. Already many thanks!
I cant stop staring at Adam's head. It looks like his hair is clinging on for dear life..
I don't know if you all are familiar with the Half-Life series, but I think it would be awesome if ya'll could make a wearable HEV suit, complete with Gordon Freeman's crowbar!
Great work norm! I’m using this video to weather my neca kain.
amazing suit
Ah! That's just Awesome
Just watching Adam go Incognitus on the floor made me start to sweat!

*incognito
They have those shirts in Age Of Ultron from under armor for the very reason of overheating and they're cool!
230 am, yay....... Great project/video!
Beautiful.
Too bad the lights and fan didn't work haha. But it seemed like the fog in the helmet helped to hide Adam's identity more than it supposedly would have. Awesome costume and piece of movie history!
Looks great
I know this is an old video, but I'm surprised Adam hasn't purchased a Seiko Giugiaro watch yet. It's the reissue of the Ripley watch
+thatgiant Ripley wears a double Casio F-100 in Alien. Seiko is in Aliens.
A space suit from Den's world a bit of Annunaki Egyptian stuff and Canuck hockey gloves. Total Heavy Metal mag flashbacks, first magazine Blade Runner got promo'd in saw after meeting Sir Run run..
Just imagine being able to own all of Adams toys!
A beautiful costume.
refering to the bronze etched helmet and componenets, maybe they wanted to emulate a sort of mk 1 deep space suite sort of like maybe one of the first deep sea diving suits.
that same sense of over compensation for all unknown scenarios.
Awesome suit replica, I would love to hear how the helmet was made, where he got the visor to fit it and so on.
i hope we get some undercover footage of adam wearing it at the comic-con
Yup still quite impressive.
Great effort Adam, you created a perfect replica !

Ahhhh you're no fun!
We all know how the heating issue ended... still one damn impressive suit :)
the toggle switches are from series 2 jaguar etype, ( the eu version, regulations in america didnt allow it so they used cheap plastic switches).
would like to see Adam build the Abyss suit that Virgil wore.
Its not countable how nerdy this is! :D
Well how do you like that. I nailed it with my "Prince of Darkness" quote, in the other thread :D
"I'll use the fan" "I'll use the coolant" "it won't get foggy" LIES!!!!!
The backpack with the fan shorted out due to problems with the lights and he did not have time or equipment to fix it in his hotel room. He found during preliminary testing that the coolant spray wasn't very effective in the way he planned to use it, so he went with a backup plan of using a different vest. kimaboe oh thanks
waterbottle exactly what I was thinking. no fan at all lol
goes to show.. always do a test run...
he should give a tour of the inside of his house just showing all his props and things hes collected
Sick!
I always wonder why they don't simply have big holes in the backs of the helmets for scenes shot from the front..yeah.. a second helmet. And that goes for 2001's suits. It's not in the 2001 archives how they were able to breathe in those things either.
Dude I took a picture with you hahaha
So much attention to detail, but the stylized Weyland-Yutani logo and name plate are swapped on the breastplate?
Also at Comic-Con Savage wore a breastplate that said Dallas on the front, confuses me as there is a Kane plate shown once in this video. I wonder if he has 2 or 3 breastplates?
This is great :D
I particularly remember a gas of some sort (I assume it was the CO2 frome the astronauts breathing) coming from an exhaust orifice in back of the helments. Do you have any idea how they did that in the movie? Great video.
So Adam will you be at this years Dragon-con in Atlanta?
I LOVE how Norm doesn't interrupt EVERY 5 F*CKING SECONDS like Will does!

i was thinking you could fix that by. doing essential what you did with the totoro suit
Wasn't this posted before? In fact, I know this was posted before.
I want a statue of this spacesuit
Mr.Savage would you or could you make a bioshock 2 big daddy suite ???
Okay I am jealous.
Dang I need to rematch Alien now
soooooo.... where is the video of the Comic Con trip????
Totally looks like the fallout Hazmat Suit
Lucas Electrics, blue smoke as standard equipment.
Nothing beats flare of clasic alpha
Hey adam , has anyone told you you can pass as simon pegg from worlds end? Contacts, colored hair, n custom..done!
My favourite film saga the alien franchise id dedicate a room for props and merchandise if I ever win the lottery
What's on the front of the suit with the handles
remember an alien never attacks its host
wear that suit in a very cold place you would probably be very warm

what is the actual helmet made of and the shoulder pads made of, plaster, poly carbanate, petg, fiber glass? WHAT
anyone have a link to the photos of the kids in the alien suits that adam mentioned.
I wonder if it also smokes out of the top
Is movie prop information curation better now than it was back in those days? Or will people in 20 years time be struggling to get info about movies made now the same way Adam and co are?
Could someone, anyone at all inform me about the awesome boots in this suit? @_@
what's the t-shirt norm is wearing? can i get a link to buy?
www.google.com
You are welcome ;)
I wish I new Adams number so I could contact him about this suit aka the helmet and suit
Did he not use that fan when he was walking the floor? Or was it not sufficient enough?
The electrical system shorted seconds before he went on the floor and he of course couldn't fix it so he just did the walk anyway
zainethedemonking
He was a victim of the prince of darkness!
zainethedemonking Not only that. He went with another cooling vest and the one he used was supposed to be put in a freezer but they only had access to a fridge. So yeah. He was probably on the verge of heat exhaustion in that thing. :P
If you were to wear a facehugger, you should melt the glass visor.
I'm pretty sure those are lacrosse gloves not hockey gloves
Why he didnt do cooling system in back pack that would have helped with heat and he could have been on floor for longer then 10 minutes
It's interesting, and a bit disappointing, that no effort(?) was made to duplicate the "exhaust gases" that shoot up out of the top of the suit helmets, as seen in the movie. (Probably CO2 gas?) At 8:08 they show the finished suit _with the Kane name plate_.
Adam pls build Alien costume pls pretty pls
why didn't he use a silent CPU / GPU fan instead of that noisy one?
+Jerry Brewer One, cost. Two, the suit's fan would have a whirring noise to it. Adam LOVES things making sense both in design and function. If it would make a noise in reality, his version will make a noise!

Invest in a rebreather...scuba rules
how about some research on the original (first attempt DUNE Jorodovskys)?
I like how akward and slumpy the suit looks.
This is amazing! Also first!
منورررررر🤭🤭🤭🤭😄 الاشقر☺️😘
rip Cain
*Kane
being me, and how I like building replicas
I would of built in the cooling system into the suit and the microphone piece as well and have controls
onto the suit, i like functioning replicas,
***** im talking 100% functiong
can you give me the space suit
lol
sexy suit.
How would he walk if there was a face hugger obstructing his face and therefore view? He wouldn't be able to avoid things directly in front of him, but more detrimental, he would not be able to see the things on show.
Why dose he have to cover his identity the suit wuld get a lot more attention then he would
It's a competition he does every year for fun. He dresses up and people try to figure out the clues he gives as to what costume he's wearing. He can't go more than an hour on the floor with some of his suits, he would pass out from heat exhaustion.

Duh doy. He wants the suit itself to get attention, not be surrounded by mythbusters fans.
Necra Monium I don't think that was meant to demonstrate viable method of walking the floor.
mobspeak It's not wrong. Maybe there's more than one reason?
mobspeak no dumdum, im saying that benjamin chong's comment wasnt wrong. and I had dinner with Adam last night and he said to tell you he has clearly stated in several videos and podcasts that he gets mobbed on the floor of comic con, and that he likes to look at stuff.

Sad that John Hurt just passed away. Shitty.

That other guy is SO annoying. He's so nauseatingly sycophantic.
