Walter Becker - 1950-2017
I first heard Steely Dan in 1972 when they played Reelin' in the years on the radio .... Such was the effect, I had to stop what I was doing and listen ... it knocked me out .. and when Johnny Walker said it was Steely Dan ..... all I could say was who the fuck are Steely Dan?, I immediately went out and purchased "Can't buy a thrill" and learned very quickly that these guys were not one trick rock n roll hicksters but very clever composers of music and lyrical geniuses.
Since that day they became my favourite band and their music became the soundtrack to my life ... In 73 (or maybe 74) I had a ticket to see "The Dan" (as I, along with others in the know had started calling them) it was to be at the Hippodrome ... I went with fellow "Danster" mate Barry Kennedy ... Only to find Donald Fagan had laryngitis and the gig was cancelled .... I then had a 25 year wait before they played their next gig in the UK ... it was worth the wait.
Walter Becker and Donald Fagan have thrilled me through the years with their brilliant compositions featuring the best rock and Jazz session musicians in the universe .. People like, Steve Gadd, Larry Carlton, Michael Brecker, Victor Feldman, Rick Derringer, Michael Omartian, Jay Graydon, Chuck Rainey, Tom Scott, Wayne Shorter .... and not forgetting their old mate on backing vocals and harmonies Michael McDonald.
Their music sounds as fresh today as it did when they started out ... and as well as owning all their albums on vinyl and CD, they now feature heavily in my current Spotify download collection.
I embrace all genres of music but The Dan have a special place in my heart.
Walter ... your music and special cynically, delicious sense of humour will be greatly missed ... I'm sure your already up there arranging an impromptu version of Deacon Blues, with Miles on trumpet, Hendrix on Guitar, Bird on sax and Jeff Porcaro on drums ..
If you've ever seen a squonks tears, then look at mine" ....
Walter Becker - one half of Steely Dan ....RIP
I believe Steely Dan made some of the best music of all time, I love them!!
really? better than the Beatles? than Motown (Stevie Wonder, 4 Tops etc;)? better than The Beach Boys?
Yes
No Josie or Black Cow??? In truth there really isn't a bad Steely Dan song. RIP Walter.
when JOSIE comes home. so bad.she s the that we never had!!!!!!!
All great songs.
@@RICHBLACKCOCK the best friend that we never had
Three unlistenable songs on this list alone! Peg, Reelin in the Years, Show Biz Kids
Josie for sure. The other factor is the difference between studio and live versions of their hits. Like FM, especially the intro, is >awesome< in their live concerts in the early 2010s. Nineteen was also perfected in concerts, with Walter Becker's guitar solo with banter, right? Sign in Stranger is way better in concert than studio. Josie, too.
After the greatest intro of any song, you get this: Agents of the law
Luckless pedestrian
I know you're out there
With rage in your eyes and your megaphones
Saying all is forgiven
Mad dog surrender
How can I answer
A man of my mind can do anything.
Don't take me alive is their best track in my opinion.
Deacon blues is my favorite
from this list
Should have been “Steely Dans top 30”
Way to many great songs
RIP Walter
Saw them twice in Sydney Australia 🇦🇺
Fantastic. Life dream come true.
Thanks boys for contributing to a great life
I was so fortunate to see the Dan at the Beacon in NYC before Walter passed. ❤ RIP, Dear Icon
Trying to pick trhe Dan's 10 best is always a good way to start an argument!
Not an argument. More like a contentious conversation. Steely Dan music is for just sitting back and enjoying .
Truly memorable music ❤.
Love them all. It’s the most songs I have by this band on my iPod. I listen to them just about everyday. My fav is. TIME OUT OF MIND. it’s such a happy song as well as walk between raindrops.
Ricky, Don't Lose That Number
This
love steely dan on every level, saw in person, have the albums it is always next to me!!
Every song is a classic
Do It Again is one of the songs that got me into rock, good job for putting it at 3
Jazz meets rock
These are some of my favorite soundtrack of life songs, lying in the grass for hours listening to my crystal radio through a mono ear bud. It was a revelation to hear them in stereo on the Walkman 😅
When a friend turned me onto steely dan my tastes in music changed . Thanks Ralf Cabot from New Jersey.
Less Can't Buy a Thrill, more Royal Scam, and we're good. Also Home At Last.
So many others ! ... With STEELY DAN, its better to do a Top 50 ... or more !
vinnie e. Yeah. I'll probably list an album soon
Of course FM is on the list! The first time I heard it was on the 2vN concert dvd. It was like aural velvet.
Wow! This is a pretty credible list. So many great songs to choose from.
As a person who is currently listening studiously to their entire output ( nothing but Steely for the past 3 weeks and probably for another month), I find this list interesting. Their consistency makes it difficult, and that's the fun of it! I'll give a shout out to "Glamour Profession" as a great one that's probably not on many people's lists.
You are correct Sid, The Dan speaks to all of us as individuals!
My opinion only.
My own top ten from the Dan, thanks for the inspiration...
10)--Do It Again;
9)--Any Major Dude Will Tell You;
8)--Black Friday;
7)--Rikki Don't Lose That Number;
6)--Dirty Work;
5)--Hey Nineteen;
4)--Kid CharlemAGne;
3)--Bodhisattva;
2)--Pretzel Logic and
1)-Show Biz Kids.
Glad I got to see them live five years ago, didn't get all my hits but still a great opportunity.
A real IMAGINATIVE list when all one can do in this list is pick out the HITS!! For a band with such a rich catalogue, is that the best you can do? Come on!!!!
It's a great list and there are not even songs like *Ricky don't lose that number* and *Gaucho* and *The Fez* on it.
Ricky is the most listenable song they ever made. Reelin in the Years is a dog's breakfast
Sophisticated as usual.
The best of all time
The Dan ! One of the best EVER !!! Did you hear me ! EVER !!!!!
Impossible to narrow it down to just 10 songs.
No problem with this list.Razor Boy, Don't take me alive, Haitian Divorce,Chain Lighting, Pretzel Logic, etc, etc.I just luv 'em all.Timeless music.Sorry that I never got to see them live.
IGY, Time Out of Mind, New Frontier, & Glamour Profession, The Goodbye Look & I go back Jack Do It Again…big smile!
Deacon Blues is my all time favorite. 😊
Quite predictable, but a good list. Have you heard 'The Second Arrangement'? Despite being unreleased, it's one of their best imo.
Vectrex4Life no I have not. I will listen to it.
I honestly can't take any song off of this list....and yet it is missing "Gaucho", "Any Major Dude Will Tell You", "Don't Take Me Alive", "Your Gold Teeth" and "Gold Teeth II" for the Denny Dias solo alone. Steely Dan rocks.
I love every STEELY DAN song...
here here. theyre all number1!!!!!!!
Agreed. I don't thing Reelin is #1, but it got the ball rolling. Dr Wu would be up there for me. As would Parkers Band. But that's just me. I shouted Parkers Band to Walter at a show in between songs. He looked in my direction and shook his head. But it was on the set list the next tour. Just sayin!
speedrcer1 ...Man I'm trying to narrow it down to my #1 Steely Dan song and I'm finding it almost impossible...Just for the fun of it a few honorable mentions...Black Friday-Night By Night-Do It Again-Anything from Royal Scam or Aja...
I'll go with Night by Night as it is great, and it's only known by real Dan fans! But great choices all.
speedrcer1 ...Night By Night is a diamond in the rough in the Steely Dan catalog.
Can't agree on this - gotta be more from the RS, Aja and Gaucho. Dr Wu -amazing too.
eccentric, yes that is the dan, love the tonight show band players such as Pete Christlieb.
Aja has got to be their best song. So flowing, cool and relaxing. Hard to pick a Top Ten song list. I’ve seen them live. Thank God! Though there’s not a song of theirs I don’t like. (From 1972-1980). 😊
I'm a 40-year SD fan. Here's my shot at narrowing it down to a top ten.
10) Third World Man
9) Dr. Wu
8) Chain Lightning
7) The Caves of Altamira
6) The Royal Scam
5) Time Out Of Mind
4) Don't Take Me Alive
3) Home At Last
2) Black Cow
1) Pretzel Logic
Excellent list.
where is do it again ?
Thanks - Peg' & Deacon Blues! I remember my cousin & i were pales & we'd go visit our friend ' Peggy' 💟
Can't argue with anything from Aja - of course - but here's my list : Any World I'm Welcome To, Doctor Wu, Rose Darling, Any Major Dude, Pretzel Logic, Janie Runaway, Babylon Sisters, Time Out of Mind, Green Earrings, Gaucho
Very Good. Just missed Rikki Don´1 Loose That Number.
"Steely Dan's Top Ten Hits"
(Source- Billboard Hot 100)
10. Black Friday
9. Josie
8. FM
7. Time Out of Mind
6. Deacon Blues
5. Peg
4. Reelin' in the Years
3. Hey Nineteen
2. Rikki Don't Lose That Number
1. Do It Again
You need to reverse #1 and #2. "Do It Again" peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100; "Rikki" at #4. "Do It Again" had 4 weeks in the Top 10, 11 weeks in the Top 40, and 17 weeks in the Hot 100; "Rikki" had 3 weeks in the Top 10, 11 weeks in the Top 40, and 19 weeks in the Hot 100. Unless you're giving a fair number of bonus points for one additional week in the Top 10, Steely Dan's biggest hit was/is "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" (per the Billboard Hot 100).
@@troylunt4315 These are Billboard stats
GREAT CHOICES!
You have taken on a list that cant be made. Nice try, but every song is a masterpiece, and means things to everyone.
At #9 replace "Show Biz Kids" with "Rickie Don't Lose that Number" , at #2 replace "My Old School" with "Black Cow", and you've got the perfect top 10 list.
Not one song from Katy Lied?
A very arguable list.
Your the...charmer❤
strange concept...more suited to David Letterman than SD - how about top ten SD literary references or uses of the major 2nd
#1)-Your Gold Teeth #2) Glamour Profession #3) Deacon Blues #4) Rikki don't lose that number #5) Here at the Western world #6) The Second Arrangement #7) Kulee Baba #8) Doctor Wu #9) West of Hollywood #10)-Godwhackers.....and that's todays list tomorrow will be different except for 1 and 2
My favourite song is Rikky don't lose that number
do it again is no 1
AMO DEMAIS
"Pretzel Logic", "Brooklyn" and :Show Biz Kids" are my favorite Steely songs. I really didn't care much for their attempts at jazz.
How can a Steely Dan top 10 list NOT include Babylon Sister???
On the water,katrina❤
you cant have a top ten of steely dan. like the beatles, almost every song's great. having said that, kid charlemagne and pretzel logic would probably be my 1 and 2.
EDM is not the only good type of music!
Chain Lightning!
no Dr Wu?
Bogs Dollocks!
What, no Ricki??🤔
Any Major Dude and Black Cow have to be in there.
Kid❤
Why does nobody talk about how super good fire in the hole is
Sakshi Arya spot on!! It’s their best song imo, the intro is amazing
Well I remember ( only a fool would say that) … that’s the first song in my memory…..
and nothing from Katy Lied...
tbh, i dont understand how people dont put do it again as the top 1
because it is too simple and boring compared to most of their songs
@@Tom-ou8cz it's neither simple or boring, it is their most unique song that combine jazz rock and latino genre perfectly which contribute to it's unique side. And how you can call it boring with that incredible melody, Donald Fagen vocals at his best and those magnificient solos. It is BY FAR the best song they ever made and it is for a reason it is the most know by people.
Glamour profession?
So many artists have used their beats.
Wow, No Pretzel Logic, Black Friday, Bodhisattva. Really???
Well, his Top Ten sucks, but at least he's a fan. He did put Kid Charlemagne in there, but Reelin' in the Years at Numero Uno? An OK tune off the debut album, but it pales against anything from Countdown, Katie Lied, Pretzel Logic, or Royal Scam. And I knew the group was about burned out when I heard Aja. "They call Alabama the Crimson Tide..." Seriously?
Not to mention rikki don't lose that number
@@russg1801 Reelin in the years IS their best song
@@NeWodDipo It was certainly their most commercial song, and I think that virtually any track from their first four albums could be listed as the best, but for me personally it has to be Do it again. Laidback rhythm, cracking guitar solo morphing into an equally stunning keyboard solo, and interesting lyrics too! It's the song I use as the ringtone on my phone.
There is no such thing as a 10 top Steely Dan song list. It is merely your favorite 10 Steely Dan songs. Or in my case my favorite 40 or 50.
Agreed
Mike mcdonald, steely Dan bro❤
Black Cow please.
Doing so well until no.1. Sorry, I just really can’t get into Can’t Buy A Thrill, but a lot of people can so I guess I’m the weird one. Good list otherwise, love the picks from Aja and Royal Scam in particular.
FM, Do it again, Show buzz, hey nineteen kids would not crack my top ten and maybe reelin in the years 10 at tops. Peg, deacon blues, kid Charlemagne should be higher imo.
I blame John Mulaney for telling me his interests
T Sanh I came to watch this after seeing a John mulaney interview with jimmy fallon. Needed to refresh my memory of steely dan. So glad I did.
I knew there was a reason I liked John Mulaney! ❤️
No Bodhisattva??
U.S.S. Kirk 1087 1977-78
comical,,,but. was listening to some station in PI-----dj played about 5 minutes of AJ and then shut it off saying its just too busy..ha ha
Aja was a big letdown from Royal Scam. But, I'm not badmouthing Fagan/Becker or anyone who worked with them. They gave us three brilliant albums in Katie Lied, Pretzel Logic, and Royal Scam. Another darn good one in Countdown, which had a couple of their best tracks but was a tad uneven. Can't Buy a Thrill was at least promising. And Goucho was at least a recovery from Aja.
I'm 19❤
Haitian Divorce?
thanks to JEFF LINDNER for bringing the concert on KAUAI together with Fagan.
Even i was't.invited. Salrite. I was busy giving myself the HOLLYWOOD HANDSHAKE FOR ..DICK ROOTER AND THE STOOL. O YEA THANX 2 frank-0 fo de yous of hiss gummz uh i mean DRUMS¿?¿? RANDO.
These lists are always subjective and arbitrary. You could pick several top 10's of Steely Dan songs and they would all be valid. Just to say Steely Dan's music is above reproach. All of it. (How,s that for being subjective and arbitrary)
Rikki? Fire in the Hole?
Stonks
@@Perfectpizza6 yes sir
Only a Fool.
Where is Dirty Work
All good Steely Dan songs, most of what they recorded were good, really but, but these are nowhere near their best. Most listed here are the soft rock stuff and not until #3, "Do it Again" is there a solid entry. Any Best of Steely Dan without Don't Take Me Alive is D.O.A.
Sorry but Show Biz Kids (one of my least favourite Dan songs) is not better than Haitian Divorce (one of my favourites) or Rikki Don't Lose That Number. And Do It Again should be No.1.
dirty work?
Your opinion is wrong.
Say daddy 😷
Respectfully disagree with this list
worst 10 songs - 1. Green Earrings
It’s just a list of their radio friendly hits.
and nothing from Katy Lied...
