Question? Is the turning of the airtight container for how many days? Then can you place into another airtight container afterwards if no issues? My new dehydrator is so post to show up tomorrow.
Darcy, I’m clearing out the freezer this morning and thought “What’s Darcy’s got to say about frozen fruit?” Thanks for always being the best go to resource! 💞
Can't believe I got into dehydrating just at the start of the dry season lol first time drying stuff in a rain forest, lets see how this goes. Started doing this in a desert and got spoiled rotten.
I love dehydrated bananas, apples (without skin) and mangos! I just do the bananas till they are chewy not completely dry, they don't have a long shelf life, but they don't last long in our house! They are great to give a teething baby to chew on!
I just started using a round Cabela's dehydrator, I got as a Christmas gift a few years ago, probably 10! I can't find silicone sheet that will fit, but found some mats, meant for dehydrators, that have holes in them. I tried making apple sauce, cinnamon fruit leather, and it "cooked" the pattern of the rubber mat into it. While removing it in pieces, and rolling pieces in wax paper, I laughed, because I thought that my 4 grandsons, under the age of 10, would have fun eating it, if I told them it was snake skin! It looked exactly like snake skin! And with the varied marks the cinnamon made, it made it look more real! Even my 2-year old granddaughter will like it, because she and her 5-year old brother come here a lot, and they love going to the basement to retrieve the 5-6-foot stuffed python snake that is down there, from one of our son's, and they bring it up to chase grandpa, and to bite grandma (I don't run much these days!😁)!! I thought it would make a great treat at a snake theme party.....and it happened by accident! Guess I'm back to cutting parchment paper! I've got frozen mixed fruit in right now! I did take time to divide the fruit to their own trays, and I sliced the bigger pieces thinner. I didn't cut them smaller, as some suggest. I just sliced them thinner, and will remove any trays, as they finish dehydrating. I'll let you know how they do. My fruit mix had pineapple, strawberries, mango and peaches.
Im accidentally growing a lot of peppers this year and thought to myself: "Ill never be able to keep them fresh long enough", so i bought a dehydrator.. And this opened up a whole new world for me wich i find so interresting.. After that i found your channel and i realy have to say thank you.. This is so enlightening for me and i love it. Love your video's and your tips. Thank you for putting your time and effort into making these video's. I find them very helpfull and i learn a lot. New subscriber. 🥰
I made some gluten free gingerbread cookies for Xmas, and I added too much flour when I was rolling them. They were hard and dry. My mother in law suggested I put them in an air tight container with a slice of bread (GF bread) overnight. My the morning the bread was dry and the cookies were nicely softened 🎉
Hi thankyou for the advice about using a sheet, I had just put frozen blueberries straight on the drawer lol, I quickly put greaseproof paper on to line the trays/drawers, as you've probaby guessed, I'm new to this and have just received my dehydrator today
I'm trying to make room in the freezer. I put 2 gallon size bags of my homegrown strawberries in the dehydrator yesterday. O BOY! I soaked a very large towel that I place near the "leakage". Good thing the motor is on top! 🤦♀️ I'm letting it continue to dry. I shifted the trays around. I doubt I'll be able to get the leather off the bottom but we'll see. I'm not given up! - newbie 🙋♀️
Yes, sorry :( Some fruits do well from frozen, some do not. And it's always an 'if' but if they had a large water content going in, the freezing breaks those cells, so it all comes out in drying. You'll be able to clean it ♥ Hopefully you were able to savlage the strawberry bits!!
@ThePurposefulPantry absolutely zero need to apologize! I made a big ol mess on the trays but they washed fairly easily. I do have a nice amount of powder now. 👍 It doesn't hydrate in a glass of cold milk like I'd hoped for. 😂 I will be trying to make a syrup on the stove top next. 🤞 I'm sure I'll make another mess with something else soon! 😊
I just tried this last night, I flipped it about 6 hours into dehydrating which kept it from sticking to the parchment as it was still hydrated enough to peel off easily yet dry enough that it didn't stick to the parchment again after that. I think it dried faster too as the moisture was settling to the bottom.
Except for fruit leather & Apples, I rather just have my fruit frozen. Use mostly blueberries & bananas for smoothies & dont need to add ice. I'm going to try making fruit leather with cranberries. Your the Go To place for dehydrating, thanks🤗
I love how much extra information and details you give in this video, I want to dehydrate some fruits to make powders for baking and the extra information helps alot.
Love the info you offer. I have learned so much! I think blending and dehydrating fruits is the best way for someone who lives off grid using solar would be the best way to get the job done. At that point I can make roll-ups. Can I powder it?
Have you ever blended fruit for leather, then because of lack of dehydrater room, frozen it into bags of liquid that should each fit on one tray when thawed?
In will take the time snd poke with a toothpick all my blue berries, cherries and grapes. Even my blanched cranberries if they don’t pop n the hot water.
Darcy, I just got my new dehydrator but I don't have any tray liners or protecters yet. I've been dehydrating apples with cinnamon and sugar and a bit of juice has been leaking down to the bottom of my dehydrator. Will that ruin my dehydrator or start a fire? Will it be okay if I just wipe it down every half hour or so during the drying? TIA, love your videos 💜
If you’re drying fruit to make a powder, it seems like the fruit leather process dries the quickest. Can fruit leather be further dehydrated for grinding into a powder? Or is there a better way?
I dehydrated apple slices, let them cool then grind them up into small pieces. But they became sticky, so I put them back into the dehydrator for hours. They became a bit brown and more sticky. Did I overdry them? Can you please teach me how to save them?
Will it help to have a dehumidifier on with the dehydrator??? I have a dehumidifier to prevent mind and dampness in my bungalow. I mainly use it when I have washing drying inside instead of using the dryer as that is extremely expensive we found the first year.

@@ThePurposefulPantry 1) the dial is hard to understand for actual temps 2) there is no timer 3) plastic trays 4) the single fan blows the dehydrated food around
1) You mean the area to turn to is too wide you don't know where to put it? (just put it at the beginning the way we do with Excalibur). 2) You don't need a timer ;) Just run things until they are dry. The timer doesn't tell you things are done, it just shuts off the machine. And if the machine shuts off and it stays that way for a while and you have a humid environment, your food is then reabsorbing that moisture. If you see alot of my videos - I turn that timer up way more than it needs because I ignore it. 3) Plastic trays are fine. Use mesh on the (which is plastic/silicone) even those of us with trays that are stainless use mesh because it helps keep things from sticking. 4) Everyone has a single fan for the most part. Lightweight foods do tend to move, put a piece of mesh or parchment paper on top if it's a big issue. I have to do it with herbs/greens/green onions sometimes. Hope that helps? LOL
Yes - but if you missed the whole point that this video was showing the problems that people have with dehydrating fruit and how to fix it ;) I mentioned that it was best to break the skin ahead of time, or check it after it's thawed and help it along if it didn't already break ;)

As long as you dry it completely to brittle (which I do believe I mentioned).
This is a great video! Thanks for sharing.
Have you ever blended fruit for leather, then because of lack of dehydrater room, frozen it into bags of liquid that should each fit on one tray when thawed?
No - but I'm sure you could - just watch for the excessive liquid release it may have and know that you may need to simmer it to thicken it up.
Thanks for the great "fix-it" tips!
I do my froze bluberry yesterday and I scrap my 10 rack. To dry and I you do that vidéo today grrrr😂😂sorry for my english 😊

Are you using parchment paper on the trays? Is it ok to thaw the fruit first?
If you can re-freeze the juices in ice cube trays, can they be used for cooking later?
yes
I learned a lot ,thank you.

If your purpose is singly powder, yes, puree is best - and just keep drying until brittle.

You don't need to put powder in for hours. Browning can be from too hot of heat on the powder (lower the heat), oxidation, etc.
Thanks!
Thank you so much, Donna!

Yes (slices) and yes - vacuum seal it in a mylar or foodsaver bag
Can you store in mylar bags? And why no vacuum sealing?

@ThePurposefulPantry thank you! I am brand new so I'm soaking in the details :)
