    Reflective license plate spray beats traffic camera tickets in a flash
    Hate the idea of impersonal cameras ticketing you for running a red light or driving 36mph in a 25mph zone? The antidote might be in a red aerosol can.
    A Harrisburg, PA company sells a spray to stop camera-generated tickets by making your license plates so reflective that they blind a spying camera when its flash goes off.
    Tests show that "PhotoBlocker," a product sold over the Internet by Phantom Plate, can help drivers beat traffic-enforcement camera tickets by coating their license plates with a spray.
    Phantom Plate started selling the product three years ago. The company was born primarily out of anger over the growing number of places on the East Coast that were using cameras to enforce traffic laws.
    "We had a lot of family members and friends who were getting tickets right and left, " said Joe Scott, marketing director for Phantom Plate.
    Knowing that a mirror reflecting a camera flash ruins a photograph, Phantom Plate founders experimented with ways to make license plates hyper-reflective, Scott said. After much testing, they struck upon the spray.
    Since then, the company has sold thousands of the $29.99 cans that can cover up to six license plates, Scott said.

    The yellow lights at these intersections are usually intentionally shortened below federal guidelines meaning when those lights turn yellow, there is not enough time to stop for the red, so More tickets unless you are already into the intersection when it turns yellow. Light must be yellow for at least 3-6 seconds ( depending on speed of traffic) to give enough time for traffic to stop an clear before a red light.

  • @zzanatos2001

    The biggest problem with red light cameras is that they do not take circumstances and weather conditions into account. For example, say it's snowing and the light changes just as you get to the intersection. You have to make a split-second decision. Do you try to hurry through the intersection, or do you slam on your brakes?
    If there is someone behind you and you slam on the brakes, you are probably going to get rear ended. Also, if you slam on the brakes and the road is slick from snow or rain - then you are likely to slide right into the intersection.
    This is why the area close to an intersection is called "the dilemma zone."
    You can also get a red light ticket if you do not stop your car in time and the front bumper enters a crosswalk. And you can get a red light ticket if you do not come to a complete stop before turning right on red.
    These types of "law violations" are not being committed on purpose by hardened criminals or horrible drivers. Any of these scenarios could happen to anyone on the road - and it could cost easily you $150 or more.

    You people have no Idea that Winnipeg Manitoba Canada is the undisputed home of '"policing for profit". The Winnipeg Police Service will issue you a ticket for having a oil change sticker on you windshield (unsafe 200 dollar fine), a receiver hitch on your pickup, with no trailer (200 fine), not enough washer fluid, (unsafe 200 dollar fine), snow covering a part of your license plate 200 dollar fine, etc, etc.
    PLUS, mobile "cash camera" units in school zones 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, (abandoned playgrounds that have not seen a child in 20 years), and deserted construction sites, with no workers present, as well as the intersection cash cameras with a shortened yellow light cycle. I know it sounds unbeliveable, but that's what it is like up north. How us Canadians envy your right to protest the injustice.
    I winter in Texas, and the school zones are clearly marked with a flashing light, so we slow down, during times of student loading. Twice a day. Being a Winter Texan, I really appreciate the USA, as I bask in the warmth of being in a "free county". I would move here, if your government would allow it, and I could somehow get health insurance. Cop cars also have plate readers that run warrant and stolen car checks on every car the police are behind, all automatic. Face recognition cameras, now in airports, are being expanded to cover outdoor city spaces. Cop shops are linking private business surveillance cameras throughout town to their dispatch and intelligence centers via the Internet, so they can watch surveillance video from a 7-Eleven in real time. Thing is, there ain’t much you can do about it; the national security state is here to stay. I won’t be surprised if babies are implanted with RFID chips to allow even more automated tracking of citizens in future. UA-cam viewers are aware, of course, that putting a lens (or anything else) over your plate is illegal.

    I have no problem with this because I received a ticket for running a red light through the mail. Included with the ticket was a photo of the rear license plate on my car going through the light. The ticket was from a city in Alabama. I live in Georgia and was not even driving my car that day. There was no photo of the driver included with the ticket. Neither Georgia or Alabama issues front license plates. The ticket was paid; not by me but, still went on my record. Some of these companies and cities are blatantly violating the law by sending tickets to owners of vehicles. Effectively, the car is ticketed and it is assumed the owner is driving. This will never hold up as 'beyond a reasonable doubt' in court when there is no eye witness or photo of the person commiting a crime.

    • @DDS029
      @DDS029 7 років тому

      Yes it does. In most states it is worded that as owner you are resposible for your car. You make the decision to decide who you can trust driving your car.

      That is making one person responsible for the actions of another. These actions can occur without either their prior knowledge, concent, or participation in any way. Let's call this what it is... an unjust method for a government to gain revenues and I suspect that these laws will not hold up under the scrutiny of the United States Supreme Court.

      Right and civil forfeiture doesn't happen either! Traffic cams are outsourced law enforcement for profit, run buy companies who have no care about the law. Sorry to tell you but I think you've been out of the picture too long. I wasn't in the driver's seat and there was no photo showing the occupants of the car, only a photo showing the back of the car as it passed through the red-light. If you don't believe me, drive down Pepperell Parkway in Opelika Alabama and find out for yourself! Tickets are sent to the registered owner of the vehicle, not the actual driver.

    First, lots of states have modified their laws forbidding not just covers, but coatings as well, to "close the loophole".
    Second, they get away with camera-based red-light tickets (and speeding tickets) because they "ticket the car, not the driver". Ie, you won't get points on your license, but the car itself will be ticketed as if it's a parking ticket. Pay up or else.
    Also, it's not "almost impossible to detect", as all a cop has to do is shine his flashlight at your plate and see if it's hard to read. Numbers are solid-colored, the background is retroreflective. If the whole plate lights up, he got ya.
    Use these items with caution, and better yet, just drive carefully.

    I don't know if US policecars are fitted with ANPR, but here in the UK a lot of police cars are fitted with the system. As the camera can't read the plate properly, the ANPR alerts the police crew that something is amiss... People with PhotoBlocker on their numberplates get pulled and are issued with fines up to £1,000.
    Part of the reason is that ANPR is used for all sorts of things in the UK (toll bridges, various charges for driving in London, preventing petrol theft) so hiding your registration plates can be for nefarious purposes rather than driving at 90mph on the motorway.

But back home, the town makes a killing on a handful of intersections that where the stop lines are horribly worn, to the point that they can't be seen at night, or when it rains. So people keep stopping just beyond the line, and get ticketed for running the light because they technically crossed the threshold, but hadn't entered the intersection.

    Most States outlawed any kind of license-plate cover, years ago. Many are now outlawing, "any device or substance that defeats traffic control devices, or impairs Law Enforcement." That would include Radar/Laser Detectors, and both reflective and anti-reflective sprays. Courts havs also held that this constitutes, "tampering with or altering a license-plate." So, you might be looking at two charges.
    That said, reflective sprays can be detected by simply shining a white or inferred spotlight on the plate, and seeing if the letter/numbers reflect at all. Not something Cops are likely to do very often, but if they did, perhaps because you're pulled over for something else, you're in for one, possibly two, hefty fines, and quite possibly having your registration voided, and your car impounded until you re-register it, to obtain new plates.

    • @001looker

      George Bush - True enough, but only because many States have yet to legally define such devices as "impairments to Law Enforcement." (Other States effectively outlaw such devices as "windshield obstructions".)
      However, the laws, in most cases, already exist to do so.
      And as more States come to realize that Traffic Enforcement provides a ready revenue stream, without raising taxes, you'll almost certainly see more States outlawing such devices.
      A good overview of current laws effecting Radar Detectors (and Laser Detector/Jammers,) can be read here:

    All you have to do, if you get one of these bogus tickets, is ask the traffic court judge about the officer who witnessed your crime and issued the citation at the time the offense allegedly occurred.. Case dismissed. The reality is, a private citizen cannot issue you a moving vehicle violation citation. The people who monitor these cameras, and mail out your ticket... yep, regular folks. Who I might add, possibly have personal information about you, because they've been given unlawful access to DMV records via your plate number.

    • @t436

      That won't fly here. The city that does this is shady as hell they literally falsify a school zone and black out the 35 mph sign in said "school zone". $95 for ticket or $225 cause they caught you cutting though a parking lot to avoid that section of road. The camera warning signs is in the welcome to city sign so that's all the warning you get. The city has deactivated most the cameras. Only way to fight them was say car was stolen or give them the drivers license of the guy you let "borrow it" for that short time it took to speed 36 in a 35 urrr I mean active 20 mph school zone at 6:45 PM.

    I don't mind the use of red light cameras for fining people that run red lights because it is a safety issue. I do, however, have a big problem with cameras that also detect speed and fine you for that when you are over the speed limit when the light is green. Speed, maybe 10-15mph maximum over the limit, is not a big safety issue in my opinion unless you are in a school zone are areas of heavy pedestrian activity.

    • @chrish3510
      @chrish3510 7 років тому

      velvet911pk Yeah, well you obviously haven't ever taken a defensive driving course. You should always slow down below the speed limit when going through a busy intersection which is the kind of intersection they put these camaras at. Yeah the law may say your fine at the speed limit but someone running the light or cutting a right hand turn into your lane will sure as hell hit you. Proper risk management says it's always smart to let of the gas and be prepared to brake when entering a busy intersection. Have fun getting T-boned or side swiped one day.

    • @chrish3510
      @chrish3510 7 років тому +1

      I will say I'm against the camaras though, Taking a picture true after the fact does not prevent an accident and several of these intersection where they have been added have actually had an increase in accidents because drivers slam on the brakes under yellow to prevent getting a ticket leading to pile ups. I am opposed in general to how the police and municipalities police traffic laws. These camarad are just like speed traps, they do nothing to make the roads safer just generate money for the state. Peoe should be pulled according to how safe they are driving. When is the last time anyone got pulled for following to close or not using a signal, cops seem to emphasize speeding most because it's a higher fine. Far too many bad drivers get away with bad unsafe driving without repercussions because they are minor fines. It amazes me his many unsafe drivers are out there that never brake the speed limit or barely exceed it.

    California already offers the perfect solution for beating a red light camera. When my wife and I got married she never changed her last name. The car I drive is registered in her name and her car is registered in mine. When the camera takes a photo they must get a photo of the registered owner from the DMV to identify the driver. If the photo doesn't match they can't prove who the driver is and no ticket is given.

    Anyone with a year of driving experience has run a red light. Usually it's because of the time allowed to change from yellow to red and your decision to prevent a rear end collision on your vehicle,.As you look in the rear view mirror, you have to decide where the most risk is. Stopping or going through. I'd say only drivers being chased by law enforcement would purposely run a red light.

    The best way to beat a ticket from a traffic camera is to go to court and fight it. You have a legal right to face your accuser. The accuser is the camera, NOT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT. If your accuser can not be present in court, you can demand the case be dropped.
    Do a Google search and find many cases of this.

      At least in my area, and I think many others, these tickets do not add points to your driving record, so in a way, like a parking ticket at an expired meter, there is no court involved. If you don't pay it becomes a collections issue or maybe your car can get towed by the city if they find it on a public street, again rules vary by city.
      In my area you can write a letter to appeal and then they reply with a response, ie your appeal was declined or approved.

    Or... Here is a crazy idea. It's so crazy it just might work. What you do see, is pay attention in traffic. If you happen upon a yellow light slow down and stop. If you are distracted or just in a plain hurry that you run a red light, you actually deserve a ticket. I know I know I know naysayers will say the man is keeping me down, but really all it takes is an attention span longer than a sand flea.

    • @Snowdog216
      @Snowdog216 6 років тому +5

      Sure, no one should run red lights or speed. In NE Ohio a large city had speed and red light cameras installed in what they called high risk areas, and IMO they seemed to make sense, there was a boulevard with a speed limit of 45 and people drove 60 there all day long, and a large intersection where it was dangerous and a lot of commuters would continue to go through a red light, like 2 to 3 cars after it turned red. OK, makes sense, and really no major complaints from drivers. Revenue was up, but then drivers adjusted, like you said starting paying attention, being safe. Good for safety, bad for city revenue. SO then they decided to start using mobile speed camera unit that could be towed, like a construction site generator, and set up anywhere. And those were magically put up at places where the speed limit dropped from 35 to 25. Complaints sky rocketed and then voters voted to end all traffic cameras in the area. Which as bad. Summary, you can see from the attached articles this is not a cut and dry issue.
      In Knoxville the right turn cameras were creating all the tickets and those were for someone who at 3 MPH rolled 12" past the painted white line. So in the opinion of most citizens that is not a high risk driving situation, but in fact they were now fining what was normal and safe vehicle operation.
      Just my opinion and I hope people find this information useful.

      Gary Robinson Well I did say I only knew about the state I live in.
      And I'm only speaking from my experience. "Fake" ticket may be nothing more than just satisfying to say but the fact of the matter is, when you are actually in the situation the most realistic option is to bite the bullet, pay the ticket so you can get renewed. Im certainly not denying that its only a government extortion process. Nevertheless, I wasn't happy but paid it anyway because it was by far my cheapest option.
      This only one of the countless times uncle Sam grabs us by the balls!
      If you had no issues then I would say, wonderful..thats one small win for the citizen!
      I would also like to say because I do believe that it's at least mentioning that citizens can make a difference with controversial things like red light cameras. The town I lived in (chillicothe ohio) actually petioned for the removal of the cameras and were voted out after only a couple years of use.

    • @SmallSpoonBrigade
      @SmallSpoonBrigade 7 років тому +7

      The problem is that the law usually doesn't require you to stop for a yellow light if it's unsafe to do so and some places have the timing of both the yellow and the camera set in a way that people not trying to run the light wind up being caught.
      As a result you wind up with an increase in people rear ending people that are slamming on their brakes to avoid the ticket.
      I don't approve of people breaking these sorts of laws, but it's not necessarily as simple as not running red lights as some places specifically set them up so that it's hard to avoid the ticket.

    • @mpikas

      Do you have them in your area? In the DC metro area they're rampant, and typically they shorten the yellow light time to make more money on them. They've done a few studies showing that they actually cause more accidents when people figure out that they have them and freak out when they get a red light earlier than expected and slam on the brakes. DC justifies it with some hokey "yellow really means stop," deal.
      Some areas around here have gotten big into speed cameras, which are supposed to be within a certain distance from specific things like schools (sounds like a good thing, right?). Well they move them around trying to hit a spot where the speed limit changes or something else causes people to change speed there, so when they're first setup you can watch them going off and getting the majority of the cars going through. Then when the locals figure out where they are they start hitting the brakes approaching them (often going through like 10 mph under just hitting the brakes because that's where the camera is and not checking speed) and people not otherwise seeing why they're suddenly slowing down in crazy DC metro traffic start causing accidents again.
      They get placed and moved according to profit, not safety.

      Yes I know. I know it's fun to go fast. But come-on, road intersections are not to take the chance to get 1 minute of time. I won't. People that want to do that is their own choice. And if they hurt someone for running a light, I won't feel sorry for them and hope they get what's deserved........Just to avoid a ticket.

      Sficlassic most people don't plan on buying this shit so they can run red lights all day, most the time it's a very quick decision the person makes to go instead of slam on the breaks at the last second when a light is turning yellow.. and it's simple human error, we all make mistakes.. I believe it's a good thing to have in case you accidnently make a mistake, if the person plans on running red lights all day when they get this then yeah that's bad.. But to most it's just a kind of insurance in case they accidentally go to far.

      paperboi714 you haven't seen the countless privacy issues with these have you? how about the fact that they fail? people often think it is a machine it can't fail. well those people are idiots and the same idiots that think government should have the ability to track and monitor you like this. By the way a traffic violation is still a crime and there must be an officer at the scene to witness/enforce this. If anything in the world shows the problems with revenue theft by the state at the freedoms of individuals it's traffic cameras.

      +paperboi714 Red light cams cause more accidents, slamming brakes merely to avoid chicken shit tickets is less safe, universally proven by studies. Google it.

      +Matt Hamilton im not in favor of red light cameras fyi. never said i was. im against idiots who run red lights to save a few seconds. people who slam their brakes are just as stupid and need to know how to predict when a light is going to turn red. but would you rather have 5 people rear end each other and live or a head on collision with no survivors? red light cameras catch those who are already bad at driving. if you know someone whos been hit by a careless driver running a red light, you'd think differently, i only said that so you can see the other side of it. are you saying people should try and beat the red light and risk someones life than to just try and stop?

    • @matth6541
      @matth6541 8 років тому +2

      +paperboi714 Red light cams are fundraisers to give out chicken shit tickets to those who are still in the intersection when it turns red.. FYI in most states, there is a 3 second span where both lights are red, and it takes a couple more seconds to accelerate and get in the intersection from a stop. So when someone runs a red light more than 5 seconds after it's turned red, when it's actually dangerous, it's not a decision to "beat the red light" --their heads are somewhere else (texting, distracted, etc)

    using a tollroad is like renting a hotel room... you get house cleaning... so make sure to use the toll road as a garbage can... toss out your empty bottles of Coke and empty McDonald's bags to the side, and the tollroad company has plenty of people on staff to clean it up... right?

    Foolproof method to not get caught, its so simple ....... put your phone down, and concentrate on the road, an amber light means slow and prepare to stop, not boot it and go for broke, the left pedal on a automatic is the brake, it's the middle pedal on a manual, this works 100% every time without fail, its absolutely unbelievable really, also the blinky thing means the vehicle is turning, but we will save that for another time, the slow down bit needs time to sink in to the brain and time to comprehend, for some it takes longer, for others .... we will see you on UA-cam quite soon.

    This is just an ad for a product that doesn't work anymore. It's called gamma correction, every photo editing software I know of has it and with it you can dim the picture down until the plate becomes readable again.
    However, the truth is these cameras cause more accidents than they supposedly prevent. I myself am literally programmed to slam on the brakes hard within milliseconds when I see those green box cameras.

    Altering your front or rear plates in California is a big fine. If you lose your parking garage receipt, they charge you the maximum amount. This is sort of the same thing. If you avoid a ticket by altering your pate, they ticket you for at least the $$ of a red light run [$490 currently].

    Trucks and Pickups (especially those carrying a load) can't stop as fast as a car. Mine is especially bad. If I hit the brakes very hard (especially of the street is wet) the front wheels lock up and I lose steering control or hydroplane. I've taken the Pickup to a dealer and two auto repair shops and no one knows of a solution or the cause. I dread wet streets combined with traffic lights. It's safer to try to make it through a yellow light even though it turns red before I enter the intersection than it is to try to stop. I know I won't be able to stop in the time and space given. I also know that there is often a delay before the other light turns green when yours has turned red and that it takes a little while for the other drivers to react and pick up speed when their light turns green.
    The fines are excessive. I paid over $500.00 in Citrus Heights, California. I tried to make it through a light cycling through yellow to red on purpose because I thought that was the safest thing to do. The best thing to do would be to increase the time that a light stays yellow. Many safety groups have done studies and determined that this would eliminate a lot of accidents in intersections. There have been many petitions brought to our legislatures advocating simply increasing the time that a light stays yellow. No body has done anything! Why not?!
    Mexico had a problem with intersection accidents and rear end accidents at intersections. They made their signals blink on and off before they changed to the next color which gave drivers more notice. Traffic accidents at intersections decreased! WE'RE NOT EVEN AS GOOD AS MEXICO! Perhaps that sounds racist but one of my Mexican friends told me about this.
    So to all you people who say "Just stop at the yellow light, I say, You Can't Suck Me Dry. I say that because you'd probably like to very much and now you know you can't you wanabe cops and cop suck ups.

      Well Charles just drive slower when you're driving through town on a route will you know there are traffic controlled intersections. If you can't stop in time for a yellow light turn to red red means you were traveling too fast for conditions
