In 1987 I got into a dispute with my local library over a book they claimed I never returned, which I had put in the returns slot. If it was just the value of the book I'd have paid it and forgotten about it, but they wanted a $40 "service fee" on top of the replacement fee. I told them to go piddle up a rope. I recently moved back to the city and tried to get a library card. They said fine... as soon as I paid the fee I owed them from 1987.

I heard this from someone who used to work at U Haul, when they take the trailers to get “scrapped” they usually take every old screw off snd put new ones on and if the actual box of the trailer is damaged they just replace the panel that is damaged and place new tired and leave everything the same, they especially save the actual steel “skeleton” of the trailer because of how strong it is theres no need to replace it, they make them hella beefy for that same reason, to re use them since they’re super durable. You dont really see a beefy steel “skeleton” like those on regular trailers unless theyre big trailers lol

That's definitely the case too. Bet someone rented it while moving to a new home, realized it would be good "temporary" storage and it's just been sitting on their driveway or in their yard for 14 years.
I'll bet a death got it stuck and a death brought it back. Older married couple rented trailer for whatever reason, then the husband got sick/died. The widow just left the trailer sit where it was on a property large enough idle equipment could accumulate. When the widow died, the family realized this thing had been sitting around for years and didn't want to get stuck with the bill so they just hauled the trailer back in the middle of the night and that's that.

Eh, I doubt the producer got down to check the frame, axles, bearing, brakes, wiring etc.
U-Haul has their trailers custom made to their design specs with durability in mind, as they tend to get the shi* beaten out of them. The galvanizing on the frames is thick, they are overbuilt for the load they are posted to carry. Statue of limitations is 10 years on grand theft. Keep the damn thing
Doesn't sound like they have anyone to file charges on anyway, but statute of limitations vary and depends on the state where they filed (U Haul corp HQ? Local branch office?). Some are three years for felonies, others longer. At least three states have no statue of limitations at all for felonies, which would include grand theft.
The statute of limitations is only for prosecution, it does not transfer ownership so U haul still owns the trailer.

Come to find out it was parked in an underground garage, 5 stories down. Jumped it, and drove it out. No one that worked there bothered to check on it. It hadn't received a single citation since it got there. No one touched it, the dust was undisturbed. How that happened in Los Angeles County still amazes me.

What actually happened: it was returned 14 years ago after being rented for only one weekend. But the manager at that location harbored a grudge against the district manager, who started dating his ex. So to get back at him, he took the trailer the night it was returned, changed the license plate, and continually rented it out to uhaul customers, but altered the payment system to make it where customers paid him directly. The trailer was under U-Hauls nose the entire time, but because the license plate was changed, and it was always surrounded by similar looking trailers, no one ever noticed it. After 14 years had passed, that manager had become district manager himself, and his ex and the old district manager had broken up, and he was pretty psyched about that. So he decided that now was the time to make his move. He had a friend take it home as a mock rental, and drop it back off at night where no one would be around. The next day, he let this low-level employee check it out, and the last record he saw in the system, (at the control of our beloved then-manager) was a rental contract for the trailer from 14 years ago. He called his district manager, which is of course our guy, behind all of this, who acts completely surprised. He fabricated this story about it being gone for all that time, since even though it’s been on the buildings cameras so many times, it’s virtually indistinguishable from the others. He knew it would be a great story and called the local news, who picked up on the story, which covered his tracks further. In the end, he got to watch the old district manager break up with his old girl, took his job, made out with over 100k in customer money paid directly to him, and got away with it all. It was a completely smooth operation. This guy has become the Uhaul mastermind. When is what the movie about this whole incident is going to be called. Anyways, I just made all that up. But it would be a cool movie, though.

broadcasters use this generic accent to keep their options open. that way they can find work in new york, california, or anywhere inbetween.
Same here in Georgia too
It's the same reason the majority of sitcoms and other shows all use generic mid west accents. It's the easiest to be clear and understand, and can get you work anywhere. Even foreign actors attempt to mimic the mid west accent the most.
The exception is if the show is specifically set somewhere where a mid west accent would be weird.

There’s nothing impossible about that coincidence and the coincidence alone isn’t enough to be certain that it was an employees doing
@@deiterp3912bruh it's not that deep. Chill.
"I've seen trailers that haven't been stolen in worst shape" that's a testament to the quality of trailers you get from U-Haul.
Did they edit the comment...take out "returned from rental" in worse shape?
@@JohnSmith-pl2bk, no, but that is clearly what the employee meant.
No, Damnkids, it's a testament to the quality of customers u-haul rents to.
@@notahotshot Which, to be fair, is.... basically anyone.
@@abbytran8514 yeah, they rent to any ol’ U that walks through the door but no Theys.
They’re not going to press charges? Probley cause they don’t know who took it lol
An employee or ex employee had it. Logical explanation.rented it out/used it as a side hustle in a few states over.
We have seemingly an abandoned U-Haul truck in my area. Located in an area of West Main Road, between the Newport Automobile Museum and the Lawton's Valley Reservoir, in Portsmouth, RI. Narragansett Bay
I only realized this wasn't the Onion halfway through.
It was an inside job for sure
But it definitely wasn't that employee who took it 😂👌
That dude looks 14!
He probably wasn't born yet when it was taken
Plot twist : He was born IN the trailer...
lol I know him I went to school with him
"Were glad to have it back"
Proceeds to scrap it.
garuntee it was an employee who used it, and for it to show back up after questions are being asked about it again means that employee still works for uhaul somehwere
You know the it's a slow news day when there's a news report on an old rental trailer 🤣
Now if they'd found an old gumboot in the river
It's Idaho this is about as exciting at the news ever gets
The person who stoled the trailer watching this..
“damn I should’ve kept the trailer”
Stole*
@@en3myspott3d54 he tried! He even attempted to use it in past tense
@@princeswagger1able Probably a Samsung phone.
The biggest unanswered question I got from this segment was, "Why did U-haul tell the local news station about this in the first place?"
Any publicity is better than no publicity....
Because a reporter was paid $10,000 to cover the BS story. Cheaper than paying the local stations for 2 minutes of air time / commercials.
Bud, it's Idaho.
I used to work for Budget Truck Rental, in Norfolk, Virginia. I once had 2 guys rent a truck for a local move, but they never came back. They paid cash, and their address and phone number were phony. About a week later the truck was found in a parking lot, in San Fransisco. They drove the truck clear across the country, east coast to west coast. I had just reported it stolen the day before.
Insurance co. most likely paid off on it years ago.If they did, doesn`t it legally belong to the ins. co. now? They paid for it.
they'd self insure themselves on individual item loss stuff like that...
@@lylestavast7652 Probably. Especially on a trailer. I mean, they scrapped it, so it couldn't have meant that much to them.
“Uhaul don’t plan on pressing charges”
But they are up in my ass for a dent that was there before I rented it
Hahaha true
When he added up the tax and rent cost no wonder it was left in the middle of the night
It's probably just a traller that was stolen and forgotten about on a piece of property that was sold and the new owner of the property probably returned it because they didn't want it sitting on the newly purchased land. Also, they're glad to have it back , but they're scraping it? They could have fixed it up or sold it as is. Could make a great custom camper.
Good kid. He seems to communicate well and uses his head. Funny how he came up with the lost revenue and tax. Even if it is rented half the time, amazing how much U Haul makes on these things. $3000 trailer would make a minimum of $75K in its useful life. Not a bad business to be in.
Worked at a U Haul in the middle of a city and we were considered "busy" by normal standards and we rarely had more than 20 trucks/trailers rented out at a time. A lot of them never moved and those same ones probably sit there to this day...granted our mechanics usually used most of them to replace parts on the ones that were rented out so most of the ones never used probably couldn't be used.
love the last line "i've seen trailer's that haven't bean stolen in worse shape"
I watched so much Onion news network that I thought this was fake
Why scrap it? Damn thing can be fixed and sold.
Spenser Hawk U-Haul only sells trucks when they’re done with them, they don’t sell any other equipment.
ShockMe1994 They do sell trailers now
Disney Fan oh, I wasn’t aware, my dad was a U Haul dealer for like 17 years, up until the past year or so when he moved his business & stopped doing it. They always said they only sold trucks but that would’ve changed since we actually asked.
They only sell old car transport trailers. All others are taken back to the UHaul factory, disassembled and rebuilt from the ground up.
randomsanwhich they sell trucks to eventually, with all the logos removed
Okay but that camera cut from the inside of the truck, that’s hilarious
I'm betting the trailer was rented, someone moved , got sick , left it on the back 40, died then , new property owner found and returned it.
Ok Bob!
I mean I agree, quit being an asshole Tony. Bob is likely right
yes this happens to my uncle he rented and passed and had it in the backyard for a long time like 12 years or more
@@turkey4957 I tell ya what
Fake Dale , why would he use his real name. "Rusty shackleford"
They can't get rid of it. That thing has a lore now. Think of the legends we speak of this trailer. It arrived when Gondor called for aid. It didn't simply walk into Mordor It drove to it.
Plus a $50 late fee, and if they had coverage it would be like $8 a day. Lmao
and the new damage
Tires looked pretty good for 14 years
Manager: "Hey, remember that trailer that looks like every other trailer we have that got stolen 14 years ago?"
Employee looking for a raise: "Um, yep, sure do!"
Manager: "I wonder what happened to it.... I'd give the person who found that the biggest raise"
*employee proceeds to put the DOT number on a random trailer*
Bro returned that U-haul trailer faster than my friend got back on Xbox after he said "be right back".
And faster than my dad getting the milk
Only an employee would know they're looking for it 14 years later. An employee that worked there for at least 14 years, should be easy to find.
probably a former employee, with a friend working there.
there is such a thing known as ‘records’.......high tech, too.....doesn’t rely on people’s memory. Many of you probably have a ‘record’.....
@@raycoleman3183 Some people think vinyl records sound better than digital recordings. I think that's nonsense.
Some say this veteran trailer has been through many battles over the last 14 years, taken by a serial mover it became much more than a moving vehicle or a friend it became part of the family. But after its medical bills became to great after the loss of its identity(its licence plate) enough was enough and it was abandoned the same way woodys friends were in toystory. Just the Uhaul thought it was finally being reunited with its owner they take one look at it and send it too be scrapped 🥺🥺😢😢😭😭😭😭
They said towards the end that uhaul isn’t pressing charges, they’re just glad to have it back. Right after saying they’re going to scrap it.
Better shape than alot that weren't stolen, but we still plan on scraping it..? Also feeling like someone just lived in it, saved up money and moved onto an actual house, or perhaps more likely a semi or freight trailer. Furthermore 165k for 14years sounds like a great deal as compared to an actual mortage, tho still better off with a tiny house obv
Wouldn’t uhaul just report it stolen like 13 years ago?
@Tony Po its a company that rents to people for extended periods of time. Why you so mad lol
That was a cool shot when the reporter opened up the doors. Also I have no idea why this was in my recommendations but here we are lol
Hi Landen!
Someone probably lived in it
