Great video! My area of California gets very little rain and has hot dry summers, so woodchips are a must! Big shoutout to Tuck! Never get tired of watching him crunch into a carrot! ✌🐶🥕
My part of California also get very little rain in the summers. High of 97 yesterday too, not looking forward to those triple digits this yea but definitely looking forward to improving my garden thanks to all of the advice in these videos.
I don’t get to watch your videos very often anymore, but when I do, like now, I realize that you still have the very best channel and videos for gardening and Permaculture! You have the best garden and the best tips and the best dog!❤️👍🏼❤️👏🏼❤️🤗
I live in southern Oregon and have very dry summers. Started growing in wood chips 4 years ago and do not water. I am amazed how well things grow. Thanks for your videos. Go Tuck!!!
@@omegamale7880 Now that the words out about wood chips it's getting hard to find them. I have been exparamenting with hay and straw. and having good success. I grew potatoes in it this year and had great resualts. 9 pounds Yukon golds from just 4 plants. 22 to go. I cover my beds in it for winter. Do a search on "Ruth Stout gardening method" I love to try new methods of gardening. Good luck!
Wonderful video and just precious to watch you and Tuck enjoying life to the fullest. God bless you and your garden. You are truly an inspiration. Love you Tuck 🐕 🐶 ❤️
Timing couldn't be more perfect. I was asking myself that very question while watering the garden tonight. Really appreciate this info James. Thanks again for the helpful content!
Thanks for the share! You got it goin your way. Looks wonderful. Looks like a great life for little doggie and enjoying watching him enjoying your hard work. Man and Dog working together the way GOD meant it to be on the land. Keep the vids rolling, I’m learning a lot from you guys.
James, you hit my soul when explained how you share your garden with your fur baby. I'm on the Oregon Coast so your channel has some correspondence with my area. You are appreciated my friend. 1 love☝️❤
Thank you, this year as I have already started building my garden, I started dumping mulch around it all and am hoping for a successful garden. I like your videos, very informative and thank you for posting updated videos
Hey dude. I just want to say thank you so much for following this journey you have started. You and so many others have helped me and my partner see that this is such an amazing way to live. We have decided to buy 120 acres of rainforest in far north Queensland, Australia. I've been following you for a few months now. And I'm loving your gardening method of wood mulch. I know it's a long winded message. But thank you so much for your content. You are a dead set legend! Much love from AUSTRALIA!
Hi, James and Tuck, love your channel! Thank you for your bountiful knowledge and ever present, positive attitude. Just finished a 10 hour stint in my fledgling Food Forest and couldn't have asked for a better way of spending my Sunday. 6, 40 cubic yard loads of chips have been dropped off and I'm not even close to being done yet.
When the arborist unloaded his truck’s worth of wood chips I freaked out and thought “oh my god this is way too much!” A week later and it’s already shrunk in size and looks completely normal now.
The whole video is amazingly informative, I appreciate your content and knowledge of plants and soil, continue what your doing and stay humble and blessed.
I've been enjoying your videos. I know we all have our issues in the garden, and mine is water, or lack of! So I really enjoy seeing gardens that have good rainfall, and what can be achieved. My dogs eat the fruit off the trees, the veg, the strawberries, feijoas! Anything they can get their paws on! They agree with Tuck, gardens are great :)
I love that your puppy is enjoying his own harvest crunching on a carrot 🥕! I'm going to start a garden next year something small i have a lot of learning to do.
I love all the information you give to us in your videos. I never think of over watering tomato plants. I think that's why my sister's plants are slowly growing. Thanks for all the tips!
When to water is a great topic. Our customers ask this all the time. We help as much as we can with advise much like your own. What new gardeners need to learn is that they will develop a sense of when to water the garden. It' kind of like you say observe and listen to what the garden is telling you
Hi James! My 11 year old wanted to comment here to tell you that you have truly inspired her. She watches all of your videos and takes notes. She just started her fall crops this afternoon. :) Oh, and we love Tuck too!!!
Tuck through a whole time process since he is a puppy, wow💥,he deserves any carrots he want to taste it 😀I think he already being expert about gardening and harvesting 😁and his healthy fur so shiny, I love you Tuck🐕
Another great video James! I used to water all the time but it makes such good sense to not have your plants get accustomed to always getting watered, they has to send out those roots in search of water thus making a stronger plant! Tuck was so cute I seen him running around so it was so cute to see he was on a mission to get his carrot 🥕. Thanks for your video
One of your best videos yet. Simple, to the point, and very understandable important information that is easy to translate into your own garden no matter the size or location. Great outlook on life as well my man. I'm originally from upstate NY, father was from Long Island, so it's really great to see the variety and selection of crop plants and trees that you've chosen. well done sir!
Tuck he is so cute I definitely love animals and gardening 2 of my favorite things by far!. Keep them homegrown organic garden videos coming my man and his dog tuck you make the food stores look cheap compared to your awesome gardening especially when they hate that we don't buy insecticide foods from them local stores I am a gardening nut and always love gardening
I just wanted to tell you that I have noticed your energy levels from the time you started this! A vegetable and fruit diet obviously makes a difference!
Wanted to tell you I contacted a tree service company and he is going to bring me his wood chips mixed with all the goodies for FREE can’t wait to get it in my garden
James, by not watering as much you force the plants to search for water deep down in the soil thereby creating a larger, stronger root system to pick up more water and nutrients in the future. Kind of like how not spoiling your kids all the time can push them to have more motivation and a successful future. It also reduces the chance of disease which thrives on moisture. This is my thought process behind not watering as much, and I found once I did this my tomatoes grew faster! Now I stick my finger in the soil and if I don't feel much moisture, I water. I just want to say you are very skilled at getting the information and knowledge in your mind out in your videos. It is often challenging for me to do this off the cuff, but I aspire to be able to. Changing for the better is difficult but I'm learning all the time about gardening, video-making, and life through trial and error, researching and watching videos from inspiring people and gardeners like yourself. I'm not just saying this stuff to be nice or to get attention. I'm saying this because I truly mean it and I just want you to know I'm rooting for ya buddy! ✌ P.S. I swear I just started making a video yesterday on the top watering mistakes in the garden! Crazy timing!

Love your channel! Tuck is the best garden helper! We moved from a coastal climate to a high and dry Colorado climate. Tried raised beds here with no great avail. Thanks, James, I really am enjoying your videos and have learnt so much already. I live in Cape Town South Africa. I am a Pastor and don;t know why I waited so long to grow my own veg - especially tomatoes of which I am really proud.

Good morning James.. It's always nice to see a new video from this channel. And thanks for the tips. By the way, I live in Indonesia and now it is in the middle of a dry hot season. I gotta water my plants everyday, otherwise they are going to die out.. I planted my fruit plants in pots since i my front yard is too small to plant fruit trees on the ground. But thank you so much I always learn new things from you. Ooh always love to see the little guy Tuck.. He's sooo adorable..
Yup!! Im trying to stay consistent with that time, I'm happy you noticed Derek. And Like I have been saying to you for years, I always love hearing from you brother
Down here in northern Alabama everyone uses pine straw as a much. Mostly because everyone is afraid of termites and the soil is dense clay. I removed all the pine straw from around my apple trees and replaced with wood much early this spring and ive noticed a huge difference. It really is incredible how much moisture the wood much holds.
We get about 14 inches of rain per year so I definitely irrigate here. Usually every 3 days during the hottest times of the year. The larger trees will probably slowly get changed to 1-2x per week once they're a bit more mature. Our plants always do way better on rainwater. I'm probably going to have to plumb up some rainbarrels to the drip irrigation to make full use of it.
I've watched a few of your videos and I have yet to find anything you say be wrong. And I like your ability to give the information on a platter and say "Here it is". You just got a new subscriber.
Hey James. I think you’re living my dream! I hope to be doing the same in time and your vids are a huge inspiration. I know there’s a zillion awesome stone fruit varieties out there and only so much space. I think the only thing I’d change in your garden is to have some blood plums. That’s just me, though! Keep it going man.
I follow you time ago and I never thanked you. What you do is really great, thanks for sharing your knowledge. I am starting a food forest in a very dry land, not enough rain. i have to water a lot now, I hope to reach that level in the future.
If you want to do a baby/ tiny garden/ mini garden with recycled containers from regular stuff what would you start with? If this is too much as a question and or not an area you want to go into, completely understand. Am simply amazed at all the incredibly splendid and curiously wonderful foods coming out of your garden. Your four legger is funny. Thank you for making these "live excerpts"-- your attitude is very cheerful and practical. You make things seem very easy, and yet know it's a lot of very hard work and discipline and dedication. It's obvious it's your passion and that you love it....
Inspiring me a lot James! Tried watching youtube videos to get into gardening and your videos are encouraging me! No watering? My style of growing a garden ! lol
Also, my family collects the rainwater in large buckets that come through the downspouts on our house...pump out this water with a hose into the garden and no wonder everything has been doing so well! Nitrogen in the rain water.
Love your videos! Tuck reminds me of my cat Bella. She loves the garden and thinks it is hers. She rolls around in my carrots and eats all the baby cucumbers she can reach. I learn a lot watching her in the garden. Keep up the good work, James!
My little girl is a Yorkie/Pomeranian mix (Lilly Ann). She loves to be out in the garden with me as well. She is obsessed with the sugar snap peas which are her favorite, but she also loves the carrots and cucumbers too. She hasn't learned how to dig them up on her own.....she waits for me to pick them for her. She will be 10 years old in November of this year. 💜
Thanks James! I have some questions about your tomato stakes. How long is the bamboo you use? How far do you put it into the ground? And from where do you purchase it? I've tried several ways of staking and supporting tomatoes this year as I prune to single stem. This video made me realize I love your bamboo stakes the best.
We averaged around 21 inches in central eastern SD. 8 inches in western SD increasing as you move east. Between the Rocky Mountains, the Big Horns and the Black Hills it dries us up.
Hey James put my woodchips down early this year and found that here in Texas that the sun heat radiates off the woodchips and is burning my trees. So next year im goinh to cover the groubd around the trees with vine veggies such as cucumbers, squash and melons to keep the chips shaded and not reflecr up on the trees. Learning somethinh new all the time. Thanks for your passion.....Jeff👍
Great point Sepp Holzer made was to not water lettuce or other plants during the day when they are wilting. I know it's tempting, but his point was that the plant naturally wilts to converse water and it's a natural process. I listened to him and sure enough my lettuce livened up by the next morning just fine. I think the key is to key observing to notice if the wilting is constant or just a cycle with the sun. Constant shows a need for water and maybe more mulch. Cycle with the sun is fine as is. By the way, love Tuck xo
Thanks for your constant sharing and your contagious enthusiasm...
You’re welcome Chantel! And thanks for you’re kind words they are appreciated and felt my friend. Me and Tuck love ya 🐕❤️
Great video! My area of California gets very little rain and has hot dry summers, so woodchips are a must! Big shoutout to Tuck! Never get tired of watching him crunch into a carrot! ✌🐶🥕

You are so blessed to have a Tuck in your garden and in your life.

I admire what you're doing. I have a very large organic garden and relate to a lot of your philosophy of nature and gardening.
You're like a gardening God. I sense you have a spiritual connection to the earth/plants/nature

Thank you for the watering tips. Love your little helper 💖.
Oooooo getting fancy with the pruner flips at the end😉
So true, nothing compares to rain water. Also under or overwatering can lead to the death of your plants.
You always have great advice for us growers thanks.
Great video and you are so right about watering.

Information and advice that makes sense. Thanks!

great application of some permaculture principles
Observation is key
Love the dog
I love how nice your tomatoes are growing James !
Maybe that's why your dog's coat looks so healthy. : )
That could be some of it 🤔
@S Masco - How many did you take and for how long? How long did it last?
Carrots and sugar snap peas are my dogs’ favorite treats!
@S Masco - Interesting. I juice a lot.

So much helpful information! Thank you.
