3:39 Is spot on. Pearl Jam was created off a failed punkier and heavier glam rock/Hair metal band called Mother Love Bone. Different singer named Andrew Wood, but mostly all the same musicians. They made an album called Apple in 1989, and Andrew Wood died they day they were supposed to release it in 1990. Eddie was added to the group through an Andrew wood tribute project called Temple of the Dog with Chris Cornell, Matt Cameron and various other Mother Love Bone (PJ) members. Eddie was a guest singer on the album and then the former Mother Love Bone members went on to form Pearl Jam with him. Interesting history and great theory, haha!
That’s because they fired their drummer, Dave Abbruzzese, in 1994. He was on VS and Vitalogy. He’s the best drummer Pearl Jam had, by far. He gave them a raw, dirty sound -- was much better.

Eddie's band Bad Radio had just disbanded, so Eddie took the offer to audition and the rest is history. Learn to research shit instead of sounding like a butt.

Not that complicated; I remember when it happened. The hottest 13 year old girl I knew was like, " HEY, there's this band Foo Fighters playing tonight. Its like Nirvana's not dead and we can keep listening to Nirvana! " Nirvana was bigger than Starbucks . I was on a corner one.time and heard "Teen Spirit" coming from 3 different sources (bar music store overhead and passing car.). It was SUPER IMPORTANT when it was. There was a huge gaping hole, there was 13 year old girls ready to jump in and guys chasing after. No I've never listened to them, unless im trapped by someones radio; but I saw that everyone loved it BEFORE they had heard it. Mostly kids who hasn't heard much else.

Pearl Jam WAS a failed hair metal band - - well, a failed glam rock band to be more precise. They were just getting picked up by a major record label but their first singer died before they recorded an album - so they wanted to change their image and sound......and "grunge" was starting to be popular so the label that was going to sign them anyway advised them to adopt the "grunge" style - which was why Nirvana gave them so much crap - everyone in the seattle area just watched these guys a year prior with huge glam hair - sequins and necklaces and so it was funny just how fast they were willing to adopt whatever image a major label told them to. But their music was NOT grunge....i always called it more blues rock/jam rock.

Sound Garden is a heavy metal band. Alice in Chains is borderline Metal. If Nirvana is the definition of Grunge then way too much plaid, preferably real sloppy fitting. Barely able to play your out of tune instruments. Slacker, loser sh*thead music. So many of my musician friends back then were worried about Grunge ruining Rock music. I always said these Grunge morons will eventually learn to play their instruments and they'll start playing lead solos again and it'll just be Rock. that's interesting about Sigur Ros though.......I knew from DAY ONE that they were using a made up language, like before I ever sat down and listened to them I was aware of that and it still makes me emotional because it's music......this is really the one hangup I do have about this particular podcast. They tend to get really hung up on the vocals and the lyrics when that should be a small component of music or even bands.

I was a teen during the so-called Grunge era but had been into punk, metal and indie music for some time before that. I never liked Pearl Jam (or Smashing Pumpkins for that matter). All I know is that thanks to Vedder and co, douchebags assholes started attending shows of bands I liked as a result. I always felt Pearl Jam were signed to Sony because the Moghuls there knew they needed a "Grunge" band. Mudhoney was the band of that era that deserved the fame that Pearl Jam received.
No one talks enough about Mudhoney. Also, I know this band I'm about to mention isn't typified as grunge but it's a good middle gap between Hüsker Dü, The Replacements, and R.E.M., along with the more pop-friendly aspects of Pavement and Nirvana, is Teenage Fanclub. A band that means a lot to me because they signified the comedown from the (teen) years of combined upper and opiate use and how with a sober mind, the way I consume and interpret music may be a metric wider than the Grand Canyon. A major crossroads. They were big around the festival circuits, esp. in Europe and got a fan out of Cobain, so maybe there was a bit of a media push for them around their debut but really should've been bigger demonstrably anywhere else that wasn't their native Scotland. It's sad that they're frequently compared to labelmates, as is the case with other bands, Oasis 🤮 and Brian Jonestown Massacre, who are mostly hit or miss for me. I would suggest they would've at least been as big as Dinosaur Jr. or Melvins, who also had the Nirvana stamp of approval but whom the outpouring of retrospective praise didn't fully arrive until at least the year of Kurt's death, since TF have been releasing albums of varying degrees of good up until 2000-2001 but have only quietly exited the discourse since then. And I know I've mentioned bigger bands in this long ass paragraph but it's proof that in the wake of grunge, you needed approval from the initial exploiters of the movement to have a prayer for record sales or the nodding of industry executives, or else your music wasn't worth shit investing and wasn't considered artistically viable since Cobain revealed one of his own personal top albums' list and labels are forced into liking Rites of Spring, Big Black, and Wipers when they know they listen to nothing other than Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, and AC/DC.

Pearl Jam WAS a failed hair metal band - - well, a failed glam rock band to be more precise. They were just getting picked up by a major record label but their first singer died before they recorded an album - so they wanted to change their image and sound......and "grunge" was starting to be popular so the label that was going to sign them anyway advised them to adopt the "grunge" style - which was why Nirvana gave them so much crap - everyone in the seattle area just watched these guys a year prior with huge glam hair - sequins and necklaces and so it was funny just how fast they were willing to adopt whatever image a major label told them to. But their music was NOT grunge....i always called it more blues rock/jam rock.
I always thought Pearl Jam was just Soundgarden light.

Barely able to play your out of tune instruments. Slacker, loser sh*thead music. So many of my musician friends back then were worried about Grunge ruining Rock music.
I always said these Grunge morons will eventually learn to play their instruments and they'll start playing lead solos again and it'll just be Rock. I really think most of those guys were closet metal or hairband wannabes.

that's interesting about Sigur Ros though.......I knew from DAY ONE that they were using a made up language, like before I ever sat down and listened to them I was aware of that and it still makes me emotional because it's music......this is really the one hangup I do have about this particular podcast. They tend to get really hung up on the vocals and the lyrics when that should be a small component of music or even bands.
Only an hour and 15? Seems like it would take days to list the ways that PJ sux. This was very heartwarming, one of my most hated bands over the years. lol

I was a teen during the so-called Grunge era but had been into punk, metal and indie music for some time before that. I never liked Pearl Jam (or Smashing Pumpkins for that matter). All I know is that thanks to Vedder and co, douchebags assholes started attending shows of bands I liked as a result. I always felt Pearl Jam were signed to Sony because the Moghuls there knew they needed a "Grunge" band. Mudhoney was the band of that era that deserved the fame that Pearl Jam received.
No one talks enough about Mudhoney. Also, I know this band I'm about to mention isn't typified as grunge but it's a good middle gap between Hüsker Dü, The Replacements, and R.E.M., along with the more pop-friendly aspects of Pavement and Nirvana, is Teenage Fanclub. A band that means a lot to me because they signified the comedown from the (teen) years of combined upper and opiate use and how with a sober mind, the way I consume and interpret music may be a metric wider than the Grand Canyon. A major crossroads. They were big around the festival circuits, esp. in Europe and got a fan out of Cobain, so maybe there was a bit of a media push for them around their debut but really should've been bigger demonstrably anywhere else that wasn't their native Scotland. It's sad that they're frequently compared to labelmates, as is the case with other bands, Oasis 🤮 and Brian Jonestown Massacre, who are mostly hit or miss for me. I would suggest they would've at least been as big as Dinosaur Jr. or Melvins, who also had the Nirvana stamp of approval but whom the outpouring of retrospective praise didn't fully arrive until at least the year of Kurt's death, since TF have been releasing albums of varying degrees of good up until 2000-2001 but have only quietly exited the discourse since then.
And I know I've mentioned bigger bands in this long ass paragraph but it's proof that in the wake of grunge, you needed approval from the initial exploiters of the movement to have a prayer for record sales or the nodding of industry executives, or else your music wasn't worth shit investing and wasn't considered artistically viable since Cobain revealed one of his own personal top albums' list and labels are forced into liking Rites of Spring, Big Black, and Wipers when they know they listen to nothing other than Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, and AC/DC.

But yeah, Teenage Fanclub were on the radar, but maybe I didn't give them the hearing they deserved. Anyhow, thanks for the reminder, I'm currently listening to "The Concept" and will spin a few more before the night is out.
