Oh my goodness! I love the way you think Laura! You must have an engineering background! Thank you so much for this tip! I always thought it was just me(Operator Error!)
Hi Laura, this is such an amazing hack which I will be definitely be using. I read other viewers testimonies of 50 years of sewing. This goes to show that we're never too old to learn and the day one stop learning is the day we die. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much for these tips. The other day, when I needed to go over a bulky seam I noticed my little coaster that I had next to my machine. I tried using it and it worked perfectly!
I found this was very interesting. One thing I learned years ago for hemming blue jeans was to take a hammer and flatten that thick part where the seams join. That really helps.
You truly are an amazing teacher. I’m never afraid to tackle any sewing project you show us because each nuance of a question of “how” is answered before the question ever gets formed. 😉
I've been sewing for over 50 years and didn't know how to correctly deal with the hump! I sew shields for Day for Girls and they're pretty thick around the edge, this technique is really going to make my life so much easier! Thank you so much!
That was one of the most frustrating things I've ever had to deal with. Thank you for explaining this. Makes perfect sense now and I will have a much easier time sewing over those humps.
Nice Video! Another couple of suggestions. Hammer, yes, hammer the thick seam! This compresses the fiber and the needle slips through. Also, when coming down off the hump, use your finger and press the front of the presser foot down. That helps keep the stitches consistent in size.
I am so happy you did this tutorial, Laura. My mother taught me this when I was learning to sew almost 50 years ago and I am amazed that customers who come into the sewing store where I work do not know this! If I know I am going to have to sew over exceptionally thicknesses (and I am not using my industrial Juki) I may manually turn my hand wheel to stitch over the thickness and not use the motor of my machine. 👍😘 Another great video.
I’ve seen for years using a puddle jumper to go over big seams. The thing I learned watching this video is I’ve been using it wrongly. Thanks for correcting my misinformation.
Good visuals and explanation of cause, effect , remedy and why! For another potential tutorial topic could you explain examples of why and when a straight stitch length should be a certain length? Thank you for all the useful tips and insight you share❣️👍
Laura..this comes at a great time for me. I have this problem on seams for my quilting too. I actually thought it was the machine..now I am educated. Thank you so much.
This is the BEST idea I have ever heard/read! You really do learn something new ever day. I have been sewing for 60 years and never knew this! I was a gunner. Got to the fat seam and gunned through! Thank you.
Thank you for the great tip. I wish I had known this years ago. I tried to make LeMoyne Stars and my machine wouldn't go over the seams in the middle. I thought there was something wrong with my machine. I can't wait to try it again.
I just want to thank you for this great sewing tip and your wonderful sewing tutorials. You are an excellent teacher and you explain everything so clearly.
Wow, I really needed this tutorial 4 years ago when I was making diapers using PUL fabric, flannel and a thick, removable diaper insert . Thank you, Laura, for sharing 👍💜
I have been having this exact problem and today went to the machine shop to ask about it. My machine can go through leather so I didn't understand. The man didn't even give me this fab tip. Perfect timing. Thank you so much. Xx
I have been so frustrated these last few weeks with my sewing machine because it will not sew over thick fabric seams. Thank you so much for this timely tip. I am going to finish my project this weekend.
I have been sewing for 45 years and even had professional instruction! This was never ever taught. Good to know that you for this help! It will keep from breaking a needle too!
Another tip when sewing along the side is to have your foot exactly along the edge of the fabric but move your needle over to the right. The foot stays stable and the needle is in the correct alignment. The gadget is called a Hump Jumper. I use mine all the time. ❤️
That's what I do. My foot has a button on the left side (not the one in thd back to release the foot) that I push in and it locks the foot at the correct level. But, I never thought about something to the site side
Thank you so much for these tips! I’m new to sewing (motivated by the need for face masks in the community), and these issues have given me the blues. I keep expecting to just break my poor machine! I’m going to use these techniques when I start my sewing tonight. Thank you!!!!
Another sewing mystery solved. I knew the wedge that came with my machine was for thick fabric but I had no idea how to use it, despite reading my sewing machine manual. Thanks so much
Like many comments stated, this is life changing! I was just sewing bags & I had this problem of sewing over a side seam. I wish I had viewed this video then! More tips please!
This is a revelation! I’ve had trouble getting over the really thick seams when making hooded towels. I can’t wait to try this 😁 Thank you so much for this 👍
Great!! I went out and bought a new $2000 sewing machine and all I needed was a 25 cent nail file 😞.... I actually needed an upgrade from my 30 year old brother, so all is good. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Love your videos and excited to see your new sewing room
This tip right here wins the internet for the most useful in explaining this very common problem. Thank you so very much, you just got a new subscriber!
You are just the best teacher! I believe this might be the best tip I have heard. You never disappoint. Thank you so much for all of the information over the years. And yes, I have been sewing forever and did not know this.
Absolutely brilliant. I have been sewing for 50 years and I've never thought of this solution . When sewing along the side of a seam I use a zip inserting foot but this solution would be quicker as I wont need to change the footThank you
A trick that an old neighbor showed me once: Prep your hem or seams, and place the thick spot on top of a piece of wood like a small length of 1" x 4" , to protect your work table . Pound the thick spot 3 or 4 times with a small hammer. It will not appear any thinner, but the needle will go in like a dream. It runs right over almost like a normal seam. I had been sewing 30 years and never seen this! At the time I had to shorten all my son's jeans, and this saved me from a lot of broken needles.
Laura, as always... I was looking for a video of how to do this... I'm making Bowl Cozies, and as you know has 4 huge seams to topstich over.... and WA-LA, there is Miss Laura with the answer, and the teachings that you provide in learning ease.... Thank you as always... You are one of the mose awesome personalities one could easly call friend.... As walys, thank you for all you do, and the unlimited time you provide in teaching us... Jon
Not sew over thick seams... Madam instructor, Yr answer to the above mentioned problem is very helpful to many sewers who are nt very well versed with it. This IS A PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED OFTEN AND YR ANSWER/SUGGESTION GO A LONG WAY IN SOLVING THE PROBLEM. VERY USEFUL REMEDY. Thanks Vatsa India
This is a problem that I have and did not know what to do about it until I watched this video, and I’m glad I did. Thank you very much for the easy fix. Thank you for sharing your tip. Very helpful.
I too have been sewing for years and this was the best tutorial for explaining sewing over a hump of fabric! Using the door stop to explain was priceless!! I have a jean jig that I mostly use. I had a light bulb moment when you showed your tip of butting up fabric on the side to topstitch. I needed that tip last week! A big thank you for all your tips and advise!!!
Fantastic tutorial, I have been sewing for many years and did not know this technique for getting over several thicknesses of material, I shall certainly use this going forward, many, many thanks 👏👏
I just found this! I can't wait to try this. I bought a nice new sewing machine that still balks at those thick edges. I sure am going to try this!! Thank you!
Since watching this video a few weeks ago I’ve been trying it out and it worked a treat, thank you so much for guiding me another step along my learning curve 🥰
Such a good tip. I have struggled forever with that, especially going over the thicker seams. I have torn out many hump seams as they ended up a rats nest or uneven stitches from forcing it through. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for your tips, I have relearned so much from you after a few years absent from sewing. You are my go to person/tutorial for issues I have❤
Thank you. I have a basic elna, as I am a beginner sewer, and this information was so helpful as I nearly gave up on sewing projects such as pot holders etc before attempting a cot quilt as I had this trouble when making a denim pinafore for my granddaughter. Will now give it a go using your suggestions. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this tip! You ha r helped me out immensely. I am new to sewing and this makes gemming jeans a lot less complicated for me. Thank you!!!!

This is one of the absolutely best sewing tips ever!!! Thanks, Laura!!!
Very helpful. Very clear explanation and demonstration. Thank you!

Wow, I’ve been sewing for 40 years and never knew this. Thanks.
I've been sewing for 66yrs and absolutely delighted to have come across this great tip. Many thanks! :)
You are so good at describing the “why” of it. You don’t rush while you are teaching. Thank you!❤️
I’ve had my Bernina for over 15 years and I didn’t know what the little plastic wedges were for. Thank you for the tutorial!
🤪🤣 even though it’s not funny!❤️😀
I've been sewing for over 50 years and didn't know how to correctly deal with the hump! I sew shields for Day for Girls and they're pretty thick around the edge, this technique is really going to make my life so much easier! Thank you so much!
Oh my. You win the award for best sewing tip ever. Wish I had known this years ago. Thank you Laura!!
That was one of the most frustrating things I've ever had to deal with. Thank you for explaining this. Makes perfect sense now and I will have a much easier time sewing over those humps.

THANK YOU!!!! I almost went out and bought an automatic tension machine hoping to fix this issue. Smh.
Thank you soo much for the information!!!! My singer has a gadget that I believe just right for this job! 25 years later I now what it is!
A jeans-a-majig. I got one with all my machines & it does work
I have also used my needle packages to help with this. Such great tips, as always! 💛
I am so happy you did this tutorial, Laura. Thanks for your tutorial. I already knew you could raise the foot, but it helps for others to know.
I am astonished. After almost 40 years of sewing I never knew this. Can't wait to try.
Well these tips will certainly make shortening my DH's jeans a lot easier!! Thank you!

This makes so much sense.Could never figure out why it was so problematic. Such a helpful tip. Thank you.
Best tip ever! I thought my sewing machine could not handle thick seams. Thanks Laura
I appreciate this so much! I thought my machine was the problem. Thank you!
And I thought it was my machine! Thank you for this very helpful and logical explanation of how to solve the issue of sewing over thick seams.
I’ve seen for years using a puddle jumper to go over big seams. The thing I learned watching this video is I’ve been using it wrongly. Thanks for correcting my misinformation.
No problems with industrial machines....also a tap from a smooth hammer on the thick seam flattens it so the needle can enter easily.
Good visuals and explanation of cause, effect , remedy and why!
For another potential tutorial topic could you explain examples of why and when a straight stitch length should be a certain length? Thank you for all the useful tips and insight you share❣️👍
I agree that’s a great question.
You just saved me from throwing my machine off my roof!!! I used the nail file trick! Worked like a charm! Thank you so much!!!
I have been sewing for many years, and this is the best tip I have ever learned! Thank you so much!
Thanks for those tips, Laura’s! Much appreciated! 🌺💃🏻

Great solution to an aggravating problem! I have experienced this in quilting, and from now on, I know the answer. Thank you, Laura!

Thank you for this tip. I'm a novice sewer and I always hand sewed the denim at that point when I hemmed my jeans.
Wow thanks a million ! So many years breaking needles and going thru hell and this is so easy.
Thank you! Newbie here! Been using a sewing machine to alter some clothes, and had this issue today! Now going forward I have a solution! 😀
