BJK was a warrior as a player. She was also a pioneer for women's sports. And she continues to lend her name to many current civil rights issues. She is a LEGEND! We are lucky to have her in our lifetime.

This is the origin of modern women's tennis. Not about looking pretty and doing soft lobs until someone misses so your hair doesn't get messed up frankly like some of women's tennis at that time. Aggression, power and an amazing variety of shots and strategies. Slice spin, serve and volley. Honestly there is a beauty to wood racket play as well. Spins, angles, strategy. More interesting points than just blasting and screaming.

Blasting and screaming. That's exactly right. That's exactly what we have today. Very little variety of shot, very little thinking out there, and most of the women (and men) don't even know how to volley properly. They come to net to shake hands at the end of the match.

"blasting and screaming" is old. I was surprised by American commentators and former players like Lindsay and Roddick at Wimbledon still thinking that Rybakina was going to win the tournament and Fritz was 100% going to win against Musetti... just because they have the game that they consider effective and "modern"... and also talking about Shelton as a future champion... guys, that's not happening. Or, at least, if it happened, that would be strange. Not Krejcikova, Paolini, Musetti... These are complete players who can neutralize the so-called "modern tennis", which is the American tennis of the 90s. In the last 20 years, on the men's side we've had basically only Roger Rafa and Novak winning everything there was to win and none of them had that kind of game! Serena had that kind of game but she was also a complete player. In the last few years we had Barty and Ons and now Paolini... it looks like the kind of game BJK used to play is more modern than ever.

Julie: "BJK was leading 4/1 in the set, and I was thinking about defaulting."
MEOW and extremely CATTY, Julie! Her statement was in reference to the previous year when King was ill, but wanted to play the match to it's conclusion. BJK had the flu, was dehydrated, taking antibiotics, and thought she was going to pass out. King mentioned this out loud and Julie asked her if she wanted to default the match, even though BJK was up a set and 4/1 in the second set. She took longer and longer at the changeovers, lost nine of the next ten games and Julie continually complained to the umpire at 4/1 in the final set, saying her minute is up and that she should play or be defaulted." BJK said "...If you want the match that badly you can have it", and defaulted.

For someone used to modern tennis, could be interesting to watch this style of play. Shorter and less physical points, but greater reflexes, volley and net skills, what make a lot of points funnier than larger exchanges where nothing happens. I enjoyed watching players like Michael Llodra, before his retirement.
Obviously, it depends of everyone's point of view. I'm not going to say that classic tennis is better than the actual, both are different and good in its own way.

These players' games were dictated by the wood racquets. Limit today's high school players to wood and their games would have to emphasize tactics and placement over power that was no longer there. Today's pros are more athletic, no doubt. The power game rewards it and the the talent pool is much deeper, too.

Jessie Owens of 1936 wouldn't stand a chance in the Olympics today b/c training, shoes and track surfaces have changed. The biggest change in tennis has been the racquets, of course. You need to try wood to truly appreciate how skilled these players were. I've played pre- and post-graphite, small and large heads, low and high tension. The sweet spot is so small with wood that concentration is paramount. Modern racquets? You can get away with off-center hits and still get the ball back pretty well where wood would put the ball in the net. The power available alters how the game is played and certain physiques are better suited to it. And yes, the players today are more athletic at the highest levels. There's a lot more kids being developed all over the world b/c there's way more money in sports now, so the talent pool is bigger. I think the best of the 1970s would still do well today, but that's an unrealizable thought experiment. Time only goes one way.
