  • Emma Stone is being hailed for her portrayal of tennis great Billie Jean King. Steve Carell, sporting lamb chop sideburns, plays Bobby Riggs in the movie, 'Battle of the Sexes.' It's based on the epic 1973 tennis match pitting the feminist King against the chauvinist Riggs. Larry Riggs shared some memorabilia from the historic match. He fondly recalls his dad's outlandishly sexist remarks. American women were appalled. #InsideEdition

    People who hail this as a victory for women/feminism conveniently forget that Riggs easily beat Margaret Court - the world #1 - shortly before the BJK match. All the smart money was on Riggs but he was massively in debt to the mafia bookie. He threw the match, the mob made millions on mug bets, King took the $100,000 prize and Riggs' debt was cancelled. Everyone's a winner. You don't see current top female players queuing up to play John McEnroe because the result is obvious. The so-called battle of the sexes was nothing but a circus act and anyone who can't see that either knows nothing about tennis or is a deluded man-hating "feminist".

    Not to take anything away from Billie Jean King because she was a talented tennis player but anyone who thinks her match against Bobby Riggs was just about feminism, equality, and women's rights is a fool. This was a good film and I remember Emma Stone's character Billie Jean King referring to Steve Carell's character Bobby Riggs as a clown at some point. She was right because he was a clown. What she didn't realize at the time though is that he had every right to be a clown because they were both in a circus. The public and media wanted Riggs to be a chauvinistic pig so that is the role he played for them. They wanted King to be the woman who knocked Riggs off his chauvinistic high horse and so that is the role she ended up playing... whether she knew it or not. As far as the match goes, King was twenty-nine years old playing against a man in his mid-fifties who was washed up and years past his prime. Even Riggs knew that he couldn't beat King and that the sport had pretty much past him by but he was determined to put on the show that the media and public wanted. The sad, ugly truth of this historic event is that both King and Riggs were being used by people who wanted them to represent something.

    • @Akihito007
      @Akihito007 5 років тому +16

      Actually Riggs had beat better female tennis players than King just before. The REASON he lost was because he was deep in gambling debt to the mob and he bet against himself and took a fall. Without this, he would have still beat King.

      Before this event, Riggs went up against Margaret Court. His quote was, "Let's get down to it," he wrote. "Men have all the advantage athletically, both physically and psychologically. Let it remain at that and honor the respective achievements of both, carefully refraining from jealousy -- creating, so-called [male vs. female] championship events which can only originate from the gate-receipts angle." He trained hard to go up against her and beat her due to: The old man won the match easily -- 6-2, 6-1 -- but not because he was in such great physical shape. Court hadn't done her homework. She expected traditional serve-and-volley tennis from her opponent. Instead, Riggs fed her course after course of garbage: lobs, dinks, blob balls, drop shots, funky spins.

      And it was a fairly even match, would have been more so had he taken it seriously and trained. Bobby Riggs was the greatest tennis player in the world (maybe ever) in his prime. Aging him to 50 takes away some of that, but just some. When he jumped over the net at the end of the match, and congratulated King, he said something to the effect of "I underestimated you."

      It is, since it came from his own son and one of his closest friends. And I trust facts, not speculation from anonymous sources. His son also said that right after the match, Riggs said to King he had underestimated her. So no, he thought he could win her by a stretch and failed miserably. "So why did Riggs tell Billie Jean that he had always loved her right before he died?" What does that have to do with anything? You don't have a point.

    I always chuckle at the Billie Jean King/Riggs match in 1973. She was smack dab in the middle of her prime and Riggs was an old man. He was 55. It was 34 years since he was at the top of his game. Basically what we saw was the best female tennis player in the world was able to beat a male tennis player from decades ago who was old enough to be her father. It is laughable that feminists think this was something that proved they could compete with men. 45 years later.............they still can't. What would be brave is the best tennis player in the world (men) going up against the best female. If they win that match then it is worth waking up to.

      It was never about women being able to compete with men profissionally in sports. It was about women proving their worth and ability as athletes. Have you heard the things Bobby said about women? How no woman could ever beat him and how they should just stay in the kitchen and bedroom? She proved him and everyone who thought like him wrong. Women don't have to be as physically strong as men to be worthy of respect and be in control of their own lives. That's what it was about.
