I was 5 when that match took place. I was raised in a very abusive home. That game meant everything to me. Right after that match, I was walking by my aunts kitchen counter and saw a tuna can. I wasn't even thinking when I picked up that can and threw it at my dad. I hit him so hard, right in the forehead. I'm lucky he didn't kill me.That he didn't, that gave me insight into the fact that I did have some power in that situation. I completely stopped him by the time I was 9. That game gave me so much strength. Thank you for having Billie Jean King as a guest. Thank you Ms. King for winning that game.
Girls participating in sports helps acclimate them to real world situations. Furthermore, it helps fuels passion, mental health, physical well-being, confidence, assertiveness, teamwork, and goal mindset to name a few. Loved the interview!
Melinda, I just came across this site yesterday and I love the work you are doing. I love your honesty in sharing your struggles and pain and loss and then to find your way back to self. Very inspiring and informative conversations about women's struggles and successes. How they overcame life's many obstacles in so many situations. Courage, identity, and strength! Happy Birthday 60. Many blessings and Yahoo!
I want to also say how much you are appreciated -Billie Jean King for all you have given to Women, by your contribution and being your genuine self and against the odds. You forged the way.......for so many and changed history!
Fabulous interview thank you gals. I'm 75 and I wasn't allowed to touch a football or other 'boy' sports paraphernalia. Never tossed a ball with my brother. My parents said it wasn't proper. Thank you both for all you are doing and have done for us.
Happy Birthday, Melinda!!🎉 I turned 60 this year, and I feel incredibly empowered by women like you, Billie Jean King, and others you have interviewed. After years as a stay-at-home mom, I found the strength to pull myself together, become financially independent, and face my divorce head-on. It's been a tough journey, especially with limited financial resources, but every morning I wake up ready to fight back and rebuild my life, striving to become an infinitely better version of myself. Although my divorce isn't over yet, I look forward to the day when I can stop bleeding money to divorce attorneys and finally embrace the freedom that lies ahead. Thank you for these inspiring interviews.
Because of a Business situation a number of years ago I had the delightful opportunity to meet Billie many times !! What a force of nature and what a truly wonderful human being !! Such a kind and compassionate person !!!
@megannuffer, Yes, exactly! She has definitely been a role model to many young girls and women. When I was growing up in the 70's/80's, she was in her heyday. I loved the sport of tennis, played every day in the summer, and wanted to play professionally, but that didn't happen. She was my idol, and I named my beloved first dog after her and read her book. My hats off to the trailblazing women in tennis-Billie Jean, Althea Gibson, Margaret Court, Christie Everett, Martina Navariltalova, etc., then later Serena &Venus Williams, Stefi Graf, Coco Gauf, and the many, many others. Thanks to each of you, for your hard work, courage, inspiration, and love of the sport!
My mum is the same age as BJK, and as a tennis nut, always admired her. When i came out as a teenager, I'm pretty sure BJK was the only lesbian my mother really knew of, and although it wasn't an easy process, her example helped my mum and I to find some common ground. What a woman! Both women are amazing!
I discovered your channel after watching your interview with Stephen Colbert. I have subscribed to your channel. I wish you and your team the best of luck! BJK is amazing. This interview was great. Thanks for sharing her story.
Let us hope that these conversations will contribute to developing new values and changing the narratives about aging worldwide. This is a powerful opportunity to influence generations and cultures by using women's voices to reshape values and combat ageism. As a researcher in the field of ageism and the promotion of healthy aging, I hope these series will advance the cause and open the hearts of many. Intersectionality includes age, not just gender and race, highlighting the importance of addressing ageism alongside other forms of discrimination and inequality. Happy 60, Melinda. Congrats!
Melinda. Please continue this effort. Not just for your birthday. Make this an annual thing. You are the next Oprah Winfrey. At least offer that. Please Please Please. The Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation. There is a legacy here. A legacy for the whole world that needs to continue to be held as gold. Africa, India, The World. All about important women in the world. You have an eclectic and significant group here. A very unique view at a very special time in our history. Thank you so much for sharing all that you do. ~ Mr. Not Worthy from New Hampshire.
Thank you for giving us this gift of conversations with these accomplished women. There is something extra special about their life experience, lessons and wisdom which resonate deeply inside of me.
I turned 50 on 8 April this year. I made up my mind that I will now venture into something I have always loved doing after chasing the wind all my life: taking full responsibility of my children, family, friends. I would like to start creating beautiful spaces, interior & exterior design/decor. I am yet to lay my hands on this opportunity but I am working on it 200%!
in my opinion, this has been the most interesting episode so far. women who lived during generations in which women had far less rights in our country and during the women's rights movement have so much wisdom and interesting stories to share. and courageous, tough trailblazing women especially are just so inspiring to listen to.
How wonderful to hear BJ’s reminiscences and her wisdom. And Melinda allowing her to speak her knowledge. Another lovely and inspiring interview by Melinda. Was truly shocked when BJ said her age…what?! No way!
You are an amazing lady, and an even better human being. May the love and the light of our infinite creator, continue to guide you on you path to service to others!! Glad to see powerful entities fighting for women’s rights. Now we need powerful entities to fight for our Mother Earth’s rights, truly fight by making certain the funds go directly where they need to go. Food waste is something that needs ALL of OUR attention. ❤🙏🙏
Billie Jean King is and was huge inspiration for me to believing in women opportunities. We can be stronger. And inspiration to leadership and teamship: " Followers choice leaders. Leaders do not choice followers". A democratic principle - and for me a principle in my life, professionally and privately in organisations. Thank you, Melinda, for bringing Billie Jean King in this interview.
Woooouuuu..I was a volleyball player, but in my case I used sports as a conduit to challenge anger! Plus it was also to escape my reality with a very toxic environment,an alcoholic mother with violence personality..! But also I recognize team support & natural leadership! I wasn't the type to follow OTHERS..I was always follow myself (inner strengths) Such a powerful light indeed for humanity..! 💚🙏🥺😘🌸💕💠
For women, giving birth is the bravest we can do and championing causes and seeing them through is also extremely brave. If you believe it and know it there’s no stopping you.
I agree SPORTS is a huge way women can play a greater game for equality, Billie Jean King, #genderdynamicsintelligence is a new blueprint for the narratives that elevate all diverse preferences and the overall GAME OF LIFE between women and men for true equality. I use the dream of authentic harmony between all players as a goal on the pitch of life!!!!
Times have certainly changed. I was in High School in 1982. I brought home from registration a flyer about the brand new girls soccer team that my school was forming. I was so excited. I'm from Argentina. Soccer or "Football" is Argentina's National Pastime. My father would not allow me to play. "It's not a sport for a proper young lady.". Didn't play soccer, didn't do any sports at all. Twenty years later, I made sure my daughter could try and do what ever she wanted. She turned out to love soccer and was a star player in her community team and later in her High School team.
"You are born at 40, blossom at 60 and ready to go into full production at 80."Spiritual mother of Shri Aurobindo. It's a good compass in life. Cheers, everyone!
She went to my high school, (I wasn't even a thought yet ) same high school Snoop, Cameron Diaz, Jenni Rivera, along with so many celebrities and sports players and my, Long Beach Poly High school, "home of scholars & champions " Seriously that's our slogan 😂
So many said that my future was limited. A child born to a 13 yo child in a heavily segregated Southern state being raised by a hillbilly may seem like the ingredients of a disaster but to me it was all I needed to confirm....it's only going to get better from here. Lift. Dr Angelou inspired my life and pursuit of education so hopefully at least 1 of my precious students received a bit of lift from me. They were gang members in the poorest county of this mega-city but if just 1 found a bit of lift then my life has been worth it all.
I remember all those years back. Wow. I dont agree with many of her perspectives lots has changed in 50 years. Men are really taking a hit that's so disheartening.
Melinda, please invest in a perimenopause awareness campaign in Central America. Because there is no awareness, the pharmaceutical companies do not offer all the range of therapies available in the developed world. We just need billboards and digital and TV ads for a few months until a real and permanent public conversation is started and pharmaceutical companies realize there is a market for hormonal aid. Right now the public conversation is very isolated and trickling. At that pace we will not see big changes until years have passed. HELP.

Amazing. I'm sorry your dad was a pos. Some men do not deserve to have children and should be in jail for life.
Melinda keep doing these interviews! Great platform for so many incredible people to interview. We need more of these type of interviews.
@@mariemeyer6852 yes I'd like to see her do an interview with Bill gates about their 19 visits with epstein and the sex palace with young victims

What has Belinda Gates ever done in her life other than marry Bill Gates and handed out money she never lifted a finger to earn?

Probably don’t know what a “woman” is.
Please read history. Shut out shallow contemporary opinions, and pick up a fat history book about your topic of choice.
Thats a man.
