Thank you, Andy! this was performed on the inaugural Tonight show with Jimmy Fallon on February 17, 2024. I remember staying up “late” (hey, it was a “school night”!) to see his first show. I was so in love with U2’s performance that I got out my ancient guitar and learned it the next day. Love all the nuances that you bring to the song; that’s why you are the best guitar teacher out there! BTW, Also meant to thank you for the lesson on “Big Log” too!😊
Thank you very much for this lesson. I have loved the unplugged version of this song, both Tonights Show and the Oscars, and i was finding very hard to play it. Terrific job you have done !!
Hey Vilian, you're welcome for the lesson and thanks for the nice comment. Yeah the performance on the Tonight Show was really special, it had that magic about it that's pretty rare these days.
Your guitars sound is so awesome and warm! Thanks for this very helpfull tutorial. I just started playing so its way outa my league but I love this song to death and you did it justice!
I started of watching your video tutorials from this video, and now I know to play quite a few brilliant songs cos of you. Thank you so much for the accuracy you try to bring in, while making your tutorials. Cheers!
Hey man very nice tutorial. Loved your point on Edge's efficiency between the G to B chords. Saw the live performance and wondered if he tuned his guitar different. Now I knw how he did that change!! Brilliant
Excellent video anda analisis!! I do like both versions, the one recorded and the acustic live. Also as you really say well, Edge is a very smart guitarist, he knows really well every chord and how to play unusual chords, inverted chords, or chords without the 3rd. He´s usually unrated since he don´t acts as a guitar hero, moving his left hand quickly through the fretboard, but this one show how smart he is.. Thanks a lot for this video!
Thanks for posting. I've watched the video before and couldn't tell what that second chord was during the finger picking but now it makes perfect sense. Lesson suggestion- Jethro Tull Skating Away (On the Thin Ice of the New Day)
U ARE A GREAT TEACHER. THAT'S A DIFFICULT CRAFT TO MASTER. I'M A BEGINNER AND YOU'VE BROKEN IT DOWN TO MY SPEED AND LIKING. JUST LISTENING TO IT, IT SOUNDS DIFFICULT TO PLAY. BUT YOU TOOK AWAY MY FEAR AND ANXIETY OF ATTEMPTING TO PLAY. THANKS TO YOU I'M ON MY WAY TO PERFECTING THE SONG. JUS TRYING TO INCREASE MY SPEED. THANKS SOOOOO MUCH. BY THE WAY THERE IS ANOTHER GUY TRYING TO GIVE A TUTORIAL ON THIS SONG. HE HAS LIKE TRIPLE THE AMOUNT OF VIEW AS YOU. I HAVE NO IDEA WHY. YOURS IS WAAAAAAAAY BETTER AND U PLAY MUCH BETTER. WISH YOU CAN COME TO MY HOUSE AND GIVE ME LESSONS.
Dude, absolutely awesome tutorial. Thanks a bunch. This one is spot on and very detailed. My hat off to you sir and a huge thanks for taking time out of your day to help others learn a wonderful song.
As usual, a fantastic lesson and exactly how it should be played to such a minute detail as how to handle your pick the way Edge does it ;-) I am back to every day playing after c. 20 years of break and it is no always easy however your tutorials are as professional as one can get and one does not need tabs to learn from you. Was wondering why E maj would be played with a different fingers combination than standard but then the following bar chord is so much more natural and easy to play. Thank you and greetings from Poland :-)
I am just the beginner in learning guitar and to see a master profession like you is just encouraging...plz do help me with learning guitar as I request you to make the tutorial learning guitar for beginners video, I don't knw but I take u as my teacher :)
The sea wants to kiss the golden shore The sunlight warms your skin All the beauty that's been lost before wants to find us again I can't fight you any more, it's you I'm fighting for The sea throws rock together but time leaves us polished stones We can't fall any further if We can't feel ordinary love And we can't reach any higher, If we can't deal with ordinary love Birds fly high in the summer sky and rest on the breeze. The same wind will take care of you and I. We'll build our house in the trees. Your heart is on my sleeve Did you put it there with a magic marker? For years I would believe that the would couldn't wash it away 'Cause we can't fall any further if We can't feel ordinary love And we can't reach any higher, If we can't deal with ordinary love Are we tough enough for ordinary love? We can't fall any further if We can't feel ordinary love And we can't reach any higher, If we can't deal with ordinary love We can't fall any further, if We can't feel ordinary love And we can't reach any higher, If we can't deal with ordinary love
Been singing this song last whole month after watching it on UA-cam on that show where they played it live. Thanks for breaking it up and making it simple. I was playing the G#m the regular way of playing but the 3rd chord is what I was missing and laziness made me give up on figuring it out. ;) But thanks for your time here
Wow, I liked your performance very much and thanks for breaking it down! I must say that I liked this version even better than U2's. Perhaps the sound of the Balladeer has something to do with that... I'm a guitar novice right now, but I'll certainly be checking this vid again sometime in the future.
Very nice lesson sir. Thank you. I'm a beginner (old guy learning how to play) and I got the picking down (still trying to work on tucking the pick while I play the verse)... but I'm having a lot of trouble with the chorus strumming pattern. Any way I could bother you to write the DUDDDD out with the 4 chord changes? If not, no biggie... Once again, thank you for the lesson.
Hey dante, as far as strumming goes, it's one of those areas that I honestly don't think about too much as it's more of a feel thing you know? Have you checked out Marty Shwartz or Justin Sandercoe, both on youtube. They have a lot of beginner type stuff where they get into the strumming patterns, in fact I think Marty does this song too and it's all strumming. Good luck and thanks for checking out my channell.
Hey Man - Thanks for the breakdown, and also the analysis necessary to do the breakdown! I also think this acoustic version is much more interesting than the original -- always love to see Edge's stuff translate well acoustically, because you don't think if it as being possible because so much U2 guitar work is meshed in the effects. But it can. And the lesson is great ... was hoping someone would do it, and you've done a stellar job ... faster than I expected.
Hey Paul, thanks for the nice comment bro! To me, Edge is just a great musician and I really love the guitar part he came up with for this song. I mean I love all the U2 production with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois and all, but sometimes just a simple guitar can get the message through better right? I'm glad you're enjoying the lesson.
Name the Chord progression, so i can search songs based on. This is my fav progression, used in many songs like catalyst (lift me up, let me go), My december (reanimated), and many songs
I always have trouble doing the percussive strumming where you lift you fingers off the chord while strumming. I find it hard to keep the strumming pattern and lift my fingers and plant the chord at the same time. Any tips?
Dude you are awesome!!! If I were to make videos and plug you would you be ok with it? I obsess and try to play everything perfect as you show it but I have come to realize being a new guitar player that you leave alot of stuff out which is understandable im new and dumb but maybe I could help people with the stuff for new players. I have learned babe im gonna leave you and black bird solid with many parts of other songs you have taught. Keep going. I am inspired. :) This guy is the very best overall you will find. Stick with him.
would be nice to have little chord diagram on screen when introduce the chords. I have watch that part over and over again and end up playing all in bar chords
can u pls pls pls pls... tell me what song that is similar begining to this version of ordinary love... just this begining thing... if some1 knows what i am talking about pls pls answer.. :) tyvm
+cvrle bajzek Wow! You nailed it! There is also another one that is close too: "If You Love Somebody" from Sting. :) Those could be transposed and would give a great mix.
Dude, you pick the best songs
TheStefanzo69 Thanks bud!
I know I wish he would lay out the whole songs. I love just sitting in with him. He got me to nail fire woman like Billy on his j200
finally somebody who just explains it straight forward without unecessary stuff - great!
Thank you, Andy! this was performed on the inaugural Tonight show with Jimmy Fallon on February 17, 2024. I remember staying up “late” (hey, it was a “school night”!) to see his first show. You're welcome. I always enjoy your comments. Yeah, it was a special performance. Cheers, Andy.

Your guitars sound is so awesome and warm! Thanks for this very helpfull tutorial. I just started playing so its way outa my league but I love this song to death and you did it justice!
Like most U2 songs, they are 10x better live! Thanks for this!
I started of watching your video tutorials from this video, and now I know to play quite a few brilliant songs cos of you. Thank you so much for the accuracy you try to bring in, while making your tutorials. Cheers!
George Philip Thank George. I'm glad you're enjoying the vids.
Thank you. That was very explicit. Great job breaking it down and making it accessible for all. It sounded just like the Jimmy Fallon version.
Finally a teacher worth calling a guitar teacher!!! Great job sir.
Hey David, thanks a lot for that great comment bro! I'm glad you're liking the vid, that's great!
Thanks for the lesson.. Really a great guitar play by Edge...I have been practicing it.. almost got it... thanks
I'm a beginner player, thought this wouldn't be easy to learn with all those bar chords, but you made me do it. Thank you very much. Great song
podlavican Thanks for watching bud.
Hey man very nice tutorial. Loved your point on Edge's efficiency between the G to B chords. Saw the live performance and wondered if he tuned his guitar different. Now I knw how he did that change!! Brilliant
how can anybody press the "don't like button"?!?
this is a 100% correct! well done!! :)
Jealous people.....
Trolls
It's still fashionable to hate on U2
You are the coolest guy on UA-cam. Thanks for sharing your awesome talent and knowledge!
Excellent video anda analisis!! I do like both versions, the one recorded and the acustic live. Thanks Roberto, yeah Edge is great. You don't have to be a speed demon to be great, just ask BB King or Leslie West right?
Excellent video, thanks for sharing
Thanks for posting. I've watched the video before and couldn't tell what that second chord was during the finger picking but now it makes perfect sense.
Lesson suggestion- Jethro Tull Skating Away (On the Thin Ice of the New Day)
Fantastic tutorial. Thank you
That's perfect! exactly that the edges played! thanks for your work!!
stéphane clément Thanks for watching Stephane.

Great! Thank you very much!!!
Wilmer Saldivia Thanks for watching Wilmer.
Fantastic!
Steffan Piper Thanks for watching Steffan.
Wow, I liked your performance very much and thanks for breaking it down!

Well that couldn't have been any cooler!!!
Could you please tell me what the name of your guitar is that you're using in this video, it sounds amazing :)

Flagged... as awesome!
Hey Isaac, thanks bud, glad you enjoyed the lesson!
Brilliant... thanks a lot. Great Ovation... :)
Joaquim Belo Thanks Joaquim, I've had that Ovation forever man!
When strumming the barre chords, why do you lift your index (barre) finger up between the chords? I've always wondered why guitarists do that. Anyone?
Name the Chord progression, so i can search songs based on. This is my fav progression, used in many songs like catalyst (lift me up, let me go), My december (reanimated), and many songs
You rock....I started playing the ukulele
... Would I follow the same instructions as the standard guitar? Thanks! Cheers! 🤗🎸
shutup & play = youtube best.
I always have trouble doing the percussive strumming where you lift you fingers off the chord while strumming.

It seems so easy when you play it, so I tried and...of course not easy at all with my level, thanx anyway, keep it for later!
I'm french so it's was difficult for me :P but thank you
would be nice to have little chord diagram on screen when introduce the chords. I have watch that part over and over again and end up playing all in bar chords
how do i know which strings to hit when i shift to strumming??
is this just in standard tuning? because a few of the chords i tried, didn't work :/
Luke Chambers Hey Luke, yeah it's standard tuning.
Shutup & Play - Guitar Tutorials Oh ok cheers, i can do the tabs all good and the first chord, just the other three chords i can't do :/
Is this standard EADGBE tuning?
can u pls pls pls pls... tell me what song that is similar begining to this version of ordinary love... just this begining thing... if some1 knows what i am talking about pls pls answer.. :) tyvm
Sorry cyrie, I don't have a clue!
:) after 28 hours of searching i finally found it... Bronski Beat - Smalltown boys... have same main theme :) so now i m happy ... tyvm btw :)
+cvrle bajzek Wow! You nailed it! There is also another one that is close too: "If You Love Somebody" from Sting. :) Those could be transposed and would give a great mix.
I would really love to see the strumming pattern :)
Aleksandar Moiseev Yeah, I guess I can cut that out quite a bit, sorry about that. cheers
Awesome tutorial.
Thanks for checking it out bud!
Hi, I can find tabs like your play. Please give me some tabs on this song thanks .
Almost reminds me of Wicked Game start for Game of Thrones
Is that the key of B ?
wow... awesome... would you mind writing the chords? would be easier... thanks
Thanks bud. There's 5 chords. For the main part they're C#minor, G#minor, B, F#minor, then later it goes to an Emajor. Thanks for watching.
thanks so much... feel free to do other U2 songs :)
Dude this guitar sounds and looks exactly like Ovation Matrix, am I right? :)
I think this is being played at a slightly higher tempo than the Edge's version. But great lesson nevertheless. Thank you, sir.
In the name of the learners I demand the exact STRUMMING pattern dude! :D
Just strum how it sounds you can easily tell the pattern just by the sound
how the guitar is tuned?
Standard
