I have lived in Berlin for over a decade now with my family. I choose the Spandau district where you are close to nature (western edge of city) and can always escape from the city chaos. The Spandau Center became very busy itself. Lots of people moved in here recently. I agree that commuting in Berlin can break you. No matter if it is commuting by bicycle or by public transport. If you are traveling through the center daily it is building up mental fatigue of passing by with so many people and so much traffic. I notice how anxious I become hearing all the loud conversations through phones. That just drags a lot of juice out of you. But this video also shows how various and interesting people you can meet in Berlin. This is a unique place to meet all the nationalities and very colorful people with interesting stories.

I go to Edeka. Frau Edeka smiles and has a very positive spirit. :-) Come on... there are a ton of Germans in Berlin who have a great sense of humour and are warm. Saying this as a Brit who's lived here for close to 15 years...

I lived in 4 different cities in Germany, Berlin was one of them. It was the first city I landed in since i came to Germany 9 years ago. It was huge and overwhelming for me, especially that i couldn't find a room. Despite that, i was very optimistic and loved the atmosphere, loved the people, and was so excited to make friends and have good experiences.. Now and after 9 years, i feel myself like a star who almost died off. I want to finish my studies and look for a job outside of this dark social bubble. I feel so appreciative to what Germany offered me and helped me along the way, but life here is like slowly committing suicide.

I grew up in Berlin until I was 20. Today, 18 years later I live in a small city in the south of Germany. I had a great time in Berlin, I used to go dancing so often, I went to the loveparade 5 times and things like that. But today, it would be no option for me to live there again. I would miss the nature, the clean air and the sunny days in the south. When I go to Berlin to visit family and friends I always see these depressed people, and also these confused people in the public transport. But anyway, I love Berlin!

It’s validating to hear I’m not alone who’s struggled in Berlin. I grew up moving around a lot, but it wasn’t until I lived in Berlin that I started experiencing anxiety and feeling very self-conscious thanks to the people being super mean. Like I didn’t feel people cared about how they affect other people’s feelings at all and I was considered “sensitive”.

    • @TheMovementHub

I feel you Mexican guy! I came from Bogota, a cold city in Colombia 🇨🇴.
I love for now Berlin. Seeing the seasons. And, at the end, in winter I can read, study also work on my projects. Also see some people, try some bars. I don't like so much Summer. Too hot for me (Bogota is around 18° all the year, no seasons and it's rainy and cloudy, more than any European city. Also bigger than Berlin with 9+ millions and no subway, just buses)

If you have friends mentioned one of the speakers, but does anyone know how difficult is to make friends in Berlin?! Its very depressing, no doubt, people are frustrated and obviously for a reason. Night life, idk, when the weather is so awful, do you really wanna go party? Didn't want to sound too negative, but that is the mood in Berlin. The only good thing in this whole depressing environment, is that you can completely dedicate to your hobbies and passion, that is the only thing that can save you here.

Very interesting. I was born and grew up in Berlin and moved away 22 years ago. I felt good there. For 18 of those years, though, I couldn't imagine going back to Berlin. I cannot really pin it down, but the city somehow draws energy, a lot. However, I really missed the Berlin sky, especially in summer, while I was in Switzerland, Israel, Norway... And the seasons! I missed them so much while being in Israel! I think I like these different approaches to life throughout the seasons: you go out all the time in summer, enjoy the light until long into the evening, everything happens outside. And in winter you get comfy in your cave, meet close friends inside, it is more intimate...
While I was away, Berlin seemed to suck a lot of life out of friends from school times. Weird...

I have made similar experiences. Also born and raised in Berlin, and after moving away at the age of 19, I realized how depressed people in Berlin actually are. Many of my high school friends got lost in drugs, etc. I myself notice a drop in my mood and energy whenever I am back in Berlin for a longer while, but it's still home somehow.

There is no sense of community in Berlin. If you do not have your true friends circle you can truly suffer of loneliness. Majority of people are very individualistic and everyone is looking after themselves in very egoistic way.
People neither want to help nor seek help.
One of the fundamentals of each human is to help and feel valuable and when this is taken away: at work , friends circle, partners, family, community and etc, the sense of emptiness is very big thus making you also depressed.

I thought I liked Berlin. I moved at the beginning of COVID. During the two years of peace, I didn't experience the real Berlin. Once I got to know the city, with its crowded places, constant rush, job competition, housing struggles, rubbish everywhere, visual pollution, drugs...and bad weather, I just want to leave!
