I dont know about loose substrate affecting a leopard geckos joints but I've heard of several instances of them ripping their claws out on reptile carpet. Plus the nature of reptile carpet is a breeding ground for bad bacteria and such so I would recommend loose substrate on those grounds
I'm still pretty new to crested gecko care (got one just this May and its the first reptile I've ever owned) and these r/crestedgecko videos give me so much anxiety. The people bringing them outside especially fills me with despair like cresties are small, fast, jumpy and not very bright that is just... a recipe for disaster.
I'm so happy I found your channel. Your videos have taught me so much about reptile care and always make me laugh 😂 thanks to you Alex, I'll know to never bring my pets anywhere near oncoming traffic.
Housing leopard geckos on non-loose substrate is arguably worse for them than housing them on loose substrate. What that person is trying to say, is that it can hurt their joints long term if they are kept on something hard, like tile. Many keepers who focus on advancing husbandry (non-minimalistic husbandry, where the focus is the animal thriving and not just surviving) will 100% recommend keeping on loose substrate, and often people who keep the geckos on non-loose are frowned upon. Impaction is not caused by loose substrate. It is caused by dehydration as well as incorrect basking temps/enclosure temps. This has been well documented and has scientific backing behind it. Bearded dragons and leopard geckos becoming impacted by loose substrate in almost all cases is due to dehydration, unless they’re housed on something like calcium sand which is generally frowned upon by everyone regardless. People think that because these animals come from dry desert type environments, then that surely means their enclosure should be very dry as well. This isn’t exactly true. When I had my leopard gecko I had him housed on coco fiber (which is fine, but something like a 70/30 top soil/play sand mix is what’s often recommended). He had a humid hide with damp sphagnum moss at all times, and despite the humidity being around 30-40% and me occasionally misting the enclosure, he would still hang out in his humid hide. That was his favourite spot. He never had respiratory issues, he never had digestion issues, and he never became impacted. Despite hanging out in his humid hide a lot, he never shed in there, he’d always shed out in the open and I’ve never had problems with stuck shed aside from when I first bought him and he had leftover skin on his toes. He was previously being kept on paper towel. Leopard Gecko’s channel here on UA-cam houses her geckos on loose substrate with no issues and she’s had some of them for many years. She also mists her enclosures once in awhile. The notion that these animals are meant to be kept in super dry environments is what causes impaction, shedding problems, and digestion problems.
Leopard Gecko also doesn't recommend putting sphagnum moss in humid hides, but it worked fine for you. I have my gecko on tile ATM because I wanted to use UTH. I think so long as the gecko's not taking in mouthfuls of dirt with their bugs you'd be fine with loose substrate too, and some geckos like to dig. There's different benefits to different options.
Definitely looks like a poop that got swollen with water from being in the water dish for a lil bit! Classic crested geckos-pooping in their water dish so you are forced to clean and replace it (even though you prob had just put a clean water dish in the night before…)😂😂

The firing up doesn't necessarily mean they're stressed. I have checked on my geckos at night and they've been fired up before it can be different things why they are or not.
Yeah, it really depends on the individual gecko. Some fire up OR down with humidity spikes, more/less light, different times of the day... Different moods. No two cresties are the same!
The spleen in the water dish actually looked sorta foamy to me, like there were tiny bubbily-things around the edges. It could have been foamy puke or even some sort of...something...from the animal's food. If the animal isn't dead or sick, it obviously wasn't a big deal. Although I would probably be curious about it too.
I think the reason cresties drop their tail so readily is that they don't really need it. Most cresties observed in the wild do not have their tail (link to study is on wikipedia), so it really cannot be that important for survival. Other animals have to make the "well, dropping the tail could kill me but if I don't drop the tail, I will get eaten" decision and clearly evolution has decided for cresties that "if in doubt, drop the tail" is more advantageous.
I "treated" a broken bone at home. It was my pinky toe. Does that count? It stayed stubby. But yeah, treating a crestie's broken limb would be: numbing the limb with something. Replacing the bone straight with tweezers. Stabilizing it with some sticks and cloth, I guess?
The only time I've bought red lights for my reptiles is on accident Now i have these red lights and i'm like " i hate these what do i use them for???? "
The red lights might be a pet store thing. I bought my beardie's enclosure to the breeder and he included the red light. I went to pet stores and they only had blue and red and I read blue is worse. I had to buy a white one from someone who got them outside the country because pet stores just don't bother buying them because they already sell the colored ones, and people don't know they are bad because they only use internet for instagram and fb or just don't speak English, if I google about red lights in spanish the IA still says reptiles can't see them.

What color do albino leopard geckos become when they are fired up? They were all white when I brought them home. As they grow, they are turning yellow with light brown patterns.
albino is removing melanin or something out of their skin (all dark parts basically) it doesnt remove light colors like yellow so thats a normal albino
Question: can you put a gargoyle gecko enclosure on the floor? I’ve heard mixed reactions from just about everyone I’ve asked so I was hoping for a second opinion?
My Friend only uses her red light when her normal light goes out and she doesn't have time to run to the store but she hates the red light lol( has a fat tail)
are red lights bad during the day time? I get why theyre bad to have on all night bc they need the dark but like, theoretically if you just use it during the day bc some of the red lights are less hot than the blue ones why would that be bad. If they cant see the color red would they even be able to tell that its red (genuinely curious)
And I wouldn’t use any kind of light with heat if your talking about cresties they’re room temperature geckos over 80 degrees they could die of heat stroke
im more just curious what like the science behind the no red lights thing is cause I hear that a lot but I dont hear like why it is not recommended for them, other than the fact that it looks obnoxious (well at least I personally think red lights are annoying XD)
@@Capri-l8u red lights are mainly used at night because owners use the myth “reptiles can’t see red” while the may not be able to they can still definitely still see the light. Plan on making a terrarium for the toad and some newts from my grandmother's pond this summer. Maybe I'll share it for your tank review videos you do, if it's successful.
Red lights. My brother in law had 2 snakes a ball python and a carpet python, buddy, the ball python passed away a month ago, they definitely weren’t taken care of. Buddy hadn’t eaten for a year and I did what I could to help, I bought the rats, bought the hides, was about to move the tank so he wasn’t right by an open window with no light with no sun either then was told no. Anyways, he didn’t eat for a year and had stuck shed on his eye for a year and no one cared to do anything about it. Back to red lights, after the ball python past away they decided to get tiny (the carpet python) a red light then tried to convince me to get one for my bearded dragon cause “it’s SOOOO much better” and I basically said even if they can’t see color they can still see light so it’s no different from leaving his light on 24/7 like you do now. Idk man they were gonna let me have tiny then refused to give it to me so I just hope they actually decide to care for him after losing buddy
I always laugh when in reptile groups people claim birds will eat the reptile 😂 could you imagine holding your ball python, and a hawk swoops in and takes food RIGHT from your hand? Honestly that would be cool 😂 I live out in the country. Every time I see a hawk or eagle I just walk outside and they leave. I have lots of chickens and cats, so I always make sure to stand outside when I see a big bird. They won’t even hunt in our field just because I’m on the porch. Maybe in the city, big birds are more brave about people and more desperate for food??
anyone who uses a red light at night on their reptile loses all rights to have a pet ... ever. we need to let all the hard-core drug dealers out of prison so there is room for red light users.
@@lpseclipse8123 Presumably most people get them so they can leave the heat lamp on at night, not thinking reptiles can see the red light, but they for sure can. So like that one person said it does disrupt their day/night cycle, not healthy. I wouldn't be too harsh on people who've been misled though, these things are marketed as nighttime bulbs

Are they actually warmer? I just assumed they were regular light bulbs made with red glass. People need to actually research this stuff before owning these kind of animals. I don't own reptiles, hence the lack knowledge about red light bulbs.
@@GiraffeLoverJen they dont have to be red, just anything that says heat bulb will suffice, just be careful and research the wattage needed prior to purchase. But yes, these red bulbs are designed to give off heat. The color is unnecessary though. The wattage is what makes the difference in heat release of heat bulbs, not color.
I have never understood why cresteds are significantly more popular then most species in the reptile community? Is it just trendy to like them people just wanting to like what everyone else does? I am not saying I don't like cresteds but I believe there are equally or more impressive lizards that make just as good or better pets, like uromastyx for instance they are amazing looking, adorable, incredibly smart, and easy to care for.
I mean, why shouldn't people be able to enjoy something that's popular? It's not like Metallica is a garbage band just because it's so big. I like not requiring heating/robust UVB, and having the ability to buy food that's easy to store and keeps for months if not years. Enclosure size is manageable, so you can keep multiple if you want pretty easily. Bioactive planted terrariums are way prettier than a box with sand, a couple rocks, and maybe a fake skull thrown in there. Different folks, different strokes.
They're easy, super easy. No need for UVB or heating. If you set up an automatic misting system, it gets even easier. Their food is literal powder and water. I make a bunch, freeze them in ice cubes, and it lasts me months. Plus they're portable sized which means you don't need a mansion to house one. Being semi arboreal (although I've not seen mine ever touch the ground) means they take up even less space in a small home with a vertical oriented enclosure. With all the morphs and colors, they're also beautiful to keep and very unique looking. It's a lizard with eyelashes! Of course there are plenty of lizards that are easy, but none as easy as cresties comes to mind. I keep other geckos too and they're beautiful and rewarding pets, but I gotta say the crestie is still easiest.

Yo what food do you recommend for a beardie
I accidentally disliked and it said this was shared with the creator I’m so sorry Alex!!!!
anyone who uses a red light at night on their reptile loses all rights to have a pet ... ever. we need to let all the hard-core drug dealers out of prison so there is room for red light users.
Facts
whats wrong with it
@@lpseclipse8123 Presumably most people get them so they can leave the heat lamp on at night, not thinking reptiles can see the red light, but they for sure can. So like that one person said it does disrupt their day/night cycle, not healthy. I wouldn't be too harsh on people who've been misled though, these things are marketed as nighttime bulbs

i have ad block and sponsor block so am all good Herping.
It was gecko splooge in the water dish.
What's gecko splooge?
Nevermind. Google told me. Wish I hadn't asked 🤢

My lizard has black Beaty eyes and he sucks at jumping:/
I was like WTF title?
And yet you seem to neglect every one of my demands for a tax rant video mr herping
Probably cuz you’re harassing him for it lol
@@ownhguardian375 no, no, no I’m not, that’s not happening nope no harassment here nope
@@beasterbunny4836 I saw all your comments they look rude as hell lol
@@ownhguardian375 if you couldn’t tell every single one of them are jokes. While I do want the video I understand greatly that it isn’t an interesting topic and would probably have something controversial in it, though I would agree with it. However it’s funny to greatly over exaggerate my want for this type of video especially because of how stupid the video would be. I really don’t care if he makes the video or not, but he’s responded to enough of my comments in the past for me to know he sees my retarded comments, and that makes me laugh.
um
cool i was gonna get one so
Most pet stores 🙄 recommend the red lights for heating. And walmart carries the red ones for heat in some pet sections
Most pet stores give false information and don’t actually know what they are talking about
@@ownhguardian375 I didn't say it was right I was just explaining why he's likely seeing so many
Are they actually warmer? I just assumed they were regular light bulbs made with red glass. People need to actually research this stuff before owning these kind of animals. I don't own reptiles, hence the lack knowledge about red light bulbs.
@@GiraffeLoverJen they dont have to be red, just anything that says heat bulb will suffice, just be careful and research the wattage needed prior to purchase. But yes, these red bulbs are designed to give off heat. The color is unnecessary though. The wattage is what makes the difference in heat release of heat bulbs, not color.
How does he sort his posts like I don’t understand how he comes across 7 year old posts with 0 upvotes lol
Probs by controversial
Oof
I love chickens
Aw yes I know this one gonna make me mad 🥰🥰

Hi
I keep other geckos too and they're beautiful and rewarding pets, but I gotta say the crestie is still easiest.
its probably that they need nesquik food lol
most people would die rather than touch a bug snake or spider
IM EARLY WOOOO
Keeping leopard geckos on loose substrate is definitely not recommended !
It is, they live on loose in the wild. Just gotta make sure it’s not something they’ll try to eat
@@Typhio Yep, and it offers enrichment by letting the gecko dig in it.
I never understood why people give suplements to leopard geckos
Supplements can help prevent mbd
@@Typhio yep. very important.
YOU KILLED ALL OF YOUR CRESTED GECKOS WTF ARE YOU MAKING THIS FOR?
His employee did that, not him. It wasn’t his fault. Maybe watch the video about it before assuming things?
@@meowthekitty321 this dude steady judges and doesn't own his ultimate failures. Just because he has viewers doesn't mean he's worth a shit as a keeper. HE killed them they were HIS responsibility. I understand if you just have your couple of animals but knowing how many he has and the little amount of responsibility he holds and lack of care for that to happen is disgusting and calls for ownership not just blaming someone HE hired.
